for 2008 in the Collateral Category. &lt;strong&gt;Len Johnson&lt;/strong&gt;, president of JDG, is a long-time active member of IABC.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The award was for the IABC Silver Inkwell Call for Entries that JDG designed and produced in 2008 (and was used again this year).  This is one of the largest design competitions in the country with more than 8,000 entries, only 15% of which were selected for recognition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;NOTE: Len's team also received an award for the FTC Kids website they created, which he will highlight in discussion of how to create effective websites for action and advocacy at the &lt;strong&gt;Wednesday, October 21 Capital Communicators Group (CCG) lunch program at Topaz&lt;/strong&gt;. But No Lunch!</title><content type="html">Little and local &lt;a href="http://www.wwpr.org/"&gt;Washington Women in Public Relations (WWPR) &lt;/a&gt;has a success record for keeping on top of issues and trends and offering value-packed programming before the bigger players. For years it has had two basic formats for monthly programs: sit down lunches at the Arts Club or hotel, usually with a panel, or inexpensive (free to members) bring-your-own "brown bag" lunches in conference rooms around town.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_J4Ir6QrzAEU/Ss6M9DGraLI/AAAAAAAAAmc/vXsGHyTOPb0/s1600-h/chuck_hester.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 85px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 120px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390400784442288306" border="0" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_J4Ir6QrzAEU/Ss6M9DGraLI/AAAAAAAAAmc/vXsGHyTOPb0/s200/chuck_hester.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This month WWPR is again offering a hot program -- in-demand speaker &lt;strong&gt;Chuck Hester&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Communications Director for &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.icontact.com/media/"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;iContact&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;strong&gt;, social networking/ LinkedIn expert and author of "Linking In to Pay it Forward"&lt;/strong&gt;  -- a strong follow-up to their panel on Twitter that beat &lt;a href="http://www,orsa-ncc.org/"&gt;PRSA&lt;/a&gt;'s schedule for the same topic and format by two months. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there is a radical difference this month: it's a brown bag in the usual office conference room setting, but the cost (&lt;strong&gt;$40 for WWPR members; $55 for non-members&lt;/strong&gt;) is sit-down luncheon pricing, &lt;em&gt;but without food&lt;/em&gt;! She said that little mistakes matter and &lt;strong&gt;even small errors impact the credibility of the&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;person and organization making the pitch.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While all of the panelists reinforced the message of other panels to Know Your Media and Understand the Needs/Interests of Those to Whom You're Pitching, &lt;strong&gt;Jim Asendio emphasized the need to know your subject and be prepared for a two-way conversation and the critical importance of immediate response to time sensitive media inquiries&lt;/strong&gt;. He noted it was insulting and useless when organizations had untrained and uninformed interns make pitch calls.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Pho was refreshing in his honesty that bloggers are not journalists.&lt;/strong&gt; He said that the DC area is one of the top blogged about communities, along with New York and Los Angeles, and &lt;strong&gt;urged that pitches to bloggers be low pressure and make a personal connection&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Phillips tried to educate the group about the increasing difficulty of getting their message covered because technology and the emphasis on profitability have eliminated public service coverage.&lt;/strong&gt; He gave an example of a small independent pharmacy that was running a special community diabetes program but stations couldn't mention it or cover it because it was now considered advertising and the pharmacy would be expected to pay for coverage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The program was so successful it could easily have continued for another half hour with questions from the audience. &lt;strong&gt;If the next program is nearly as strong (&lt;em&gt;a discussion with Chuck Hester, Communications Director for iContact, social networking/ LinkedIn expert and author of "Linking In to Pay it Forward" about LinkedIn&lt;/em&gt;) &lt;em&gt;Capital Buzz&lt;/em&gt; Anthony Cobus of Georgetown University &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;These three students demonstrated commitment to the professional field of Communications and will each receive a scholarship amount of $1,000 toward their studies. The students will be recognized and awarded their scholarships at IABC/Washington’s monthly chapter meeting on September 10th.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“While this is the first year IABC/Washington has offered student scholarships, we were impressed with the caliber of applications we received,” said Tomeka Rawlings, IABC/Washington chapter president. “By awarding these scholarships, the chapter is demonstrating its commitment to excellence in communications and to young professionals entering the field.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The IABC/Washington’s Student Scholarship Program was open to students living in the Washington-Baltimore metro area who were enrolled at a local university with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and majoring in a communication-related field such as public relations, marketing, advertising, communications, journalism or technical writing. As part of the application process, students were asked to express their commitment to the communications profession in a three-page application essay.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As of August this year, Chester became a senior at the University of Baltimore where he is majoring in English. A senior at Towson University, Eimer is majoring in Mass Communication.
