Similar findings were reported in the tigecycline evaluation and surveillance trial (TEST) the 2004–2009 period, 4.6% of 3,753 E. faecalis isolates were vancomycin resistant, with the highest rates of 7.6% in the East North Central region of United States. Here we report rates and trends of vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis in the East North Central region compared with national rates from 1999 to 2010.

The Changing Epidemiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the United States: A National Observational Study

Normally found on human skin, Staphylococcus aureus can infect wounds and cause life-threatening conditions such as sepsis and pneumonia. Strains of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) fail to respond to commonly used antibiotics, making infections more expensive and difficult to treat.

“How much did these cost?”

Faculty members of the School of Public Health at B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dahran, Nepal guessed a range of prices—none very high, but the real price was the lowest: 5 Nepali rupees for 20 hand rolled cigarettes. That’s .25 rupees each. In dollars—well, in cents—it’s something like three or four for a penny. Even in the poorest countries, a lot of people can afford to smoke them. Matches are probably more expensive.
