This is the copy of the method published on the above link. I am posting it preserve this method. It took me almost a year to install working Foxit on my system.

How to Make Foxit Reader Work in Ubuntu 12.04 & 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot?

February 22, 2012 by Gayan

Foxit reader is a pretty good alternative PDF reader, if you’re a bit dissatisfied with the default one that comes with Ubuntu called “Evince”. Now few months ago, I wrote a post about how to install it in Ubuntu.

However, back then I used Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal (as it was the “hot release” those days :D) but thanks to a comment by “Nidhi” in that post I just realized that it doesn’t seem to work in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. I don’t know why, but for some reason, when you double click on the “.deb” file of Foxit in Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu Software Center, although the progress bar shows a 100% completion yet it doesn’t seem to get installed properly at all.

Now by default, after successfully installing a package, the “Install” button in Ubuntu Software Center should change into “Reinstall”, indicating that the app has successfully installed. But even after installing the Foxit (again, after the progress bar showing a 100% completion), that button still says “Install”, which is an indication that the installation was performed partially (if not installed at all).

So, after the installation, if you search in the Unity’s Dash for “foxit”, it’ll even display the program’s icon … however, when you click on it, noting happens, because the main Foxit executable file (more below) is missing due to the partial installation.

Well, you can click the heck out of it, nothing would happen though …

But the thing is, it can be easily fixed. So before going into further details, let’s do it.

<del style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Update (06/09/2012): These steps also works under Ubuntu 12.04 too.</del>

<del style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">1. First, download the official Foxit “.deb” file from this official download page (this issue is with the Foxit version “1.1.0”).</del>

<del style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Update: This link doesn’t work anymore, but it’s still available to download. For that please visit this page and then under the ‘Foxit Reader’ sub-heading click on the drop-down menu and choose ‘Desktop Linux’. Then click ‘Free Download’ and from the next pop-up window, under ‘Package Type’ choose ‘Deb’.</del>

Update 2015-August: The above link is also now gone!. But fear not, it’s still on the official Foxit mirror. You can download it from here (make sure to make a backup of it, who knows, Foxit might delete it too in the future).

2. Once the download finishes, double click on the file. It should open Ubuntu Software Center and then click on the “Install” button to install it.

As said before, just don’t worry about the “Install” button not changing into “Reinstall”. After the installation, close the Ubuntu Software Center (but make sure to click on the “Install” button at least once and the progress bar shows a 100% completion, so it has installed it, even if it’s partial).

3. Now go to the downloaded Foxit “.deb” file’s location and right click on it.

From the menu choose, “Open with Archive Manager”, as shown below.

This should open-up the file in the Archive manager and should display the actual content of the file as shown below (this is because a “.deb” file is sort of a file archive format).

4. Now double click on the folder called “usr” which should open the content of that folder.

Then from the next window (shown below), again double click on the file called “bin”.

Once inside that “bin” folder, you’ll see a file called “FoxitReader”. This is the main execution file of Foxit reader itself, and is also the one that doesn’t get copied/installed into HDD for some reason. What we’re going to do is quite simple. We’re gonna manually copy this file to the default location (“/usr/bin”) in your HDD which should solve our problem.

5. Now, select that file, and right click on it. From the menu choose “Extract”.

You can extract this to anywhere, but to keep things simple, please extract the file into your “Home” folder.

6. Once that’s done, open your Terminal window and simply issue the below command.

sudo cp FoxitReader /usr/bin

After that’s done, simply search for “foxit” in Unity’s Dash (or in Nautilus context menu after selecting a PDF file), and click on its icon, and voila!, now it should open the Foxit reader as it’s supposed to (shown below). That’s it!.

A little proof to show you that Foxit is running under Ubuntu 11.10

If you have extracted the “FoxitReader” file to somewhere else other than your “Home” folder, then please use the proper file path in the above command (“/your-folder-path/FoxitReader”).

*Update (05/11/2012), only for the Ubuntu 64-bit users:

If you use the 64-bit version of Ubuntu (12.04, 11.10 etc), then even after doing all this, “Foxit” still won’t work. That’s simply because, Foxit only has a 32-bit version and for an any application that’s created to run under 32-bit processor instructions should undergo few changes in order to support the 64-bit instructions.

But you can install a special software library that “fakes” (emulates) a 32-bit processor using your actual 64-bit CPU and the program should run without issues. In Ubuntu (plus, GNU/Linux in general), we need a library called “ia32-libs” for that.

It could be because this library has a shi* load of dependencies (needs a lot of individual packages, about 70-80MB to download), Ubuntu does not come with it pre-installed.

So, for all ya 64-bit users, after following all the above steps, there’s this one last step that you gotta do before you can enjoy our naughty little “Foxit”, and that is installing this software library. For that, open your Terminal window and enter the below command.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

That’s it, now it should work. A big thanks goes to “robert” (in the comment section), couldn’t have done it without you mate!, thank you :D.

But as this needs a lot of libraries (somewhat an “unnecessary burden”, if you won’t really be running 32-bit apps in 64-bit Ubuntu that is), unless you really can’t live without “Foxit”, I humbly suggest that you try something else, “qpdfview” for instance?. *

Update (07/12/2013): According to ‘Joe’ (comments) Ubuntu 13.10 users also have to install two additional packages. You can install them by entering the below command (Note: I did not test to see if they’re actually necessary or not).

sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-0:i386 libstdc++6:i386

Oy Gyan!, BTW, why did the default Foxit “.deb” installation fail?

I honestly don’t know. But then again, that “.deb” file was last released more than two years ago!, so perhaps it’s some sort of an incompatibility issue.

Anyhow, if you’ve been having troubles properly installing or running Foxit PDF reader in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot or 12.04 Precise Pangolin then that’s one way to fix it (hopefully ;-)). Enjoy!.

Few days back on my last working day in office. I was speaking to my team member and thanking them for being really wonderful team players and for helping me and the organization during tough and demanding times. After I was done with my farewell speech- my team member started appreciating me for my style of working and the different opportunities I gave them and how it has helped them grow professional and personally.

It always is a good feeling to hear good things about you. It was really heartening to see them appreciate me for freedom I gave them and never imposing myself on the, , which helped them think creatively and differently. I think this is one aspect which most of the people today miss out on as managers. Most of us, for most of the time never give the freedom to our co-workers to let them think on their own. We a always try and make people work the way we want. By saying this I am not trying to say what managers do is wrong- a lot of times its needed to make people do things in a certain way but not always.
As we say in school " Be a guide on the side and not a sage on the stage"

The other thing which my team mates appreciated me was the way I had handled people and anger and not getting upset even in worst of circumstances. Anger Management 101- You never get anything by getting angry, its an action with 0 positive outcome- the only thing it does is it hurts the other person, you lose the respect the other person has for you, it shows that you are not a person who can be confronted.
The only good thing that can happen by getting angry is you can get your work done! which is useful at times But in the long run it damages the relationship between you and the other person.

There was a time when I was "The Angry Young Boy"- someone who can throw and break things or can bang his own head against the wall. It was nice getting that complement, I think matured over the years reflecting on my own behavior and actions and also modeling what I have learned from my friends and colleagues.

Later that week I was reading about leadership and came across this book" The servant leader by JAmes P Autry". The book as per reviews on amazon summarizes leadership as:

1. Leadership is not about controlling people; it's about caring for people and being a useful resource for people.

2. Leadership is not about being boss; it's about being present for people and building a community at work.

3. Leadership is not about holding on to territory; it's about letting go of your ego, bringing your spirit to work, being your best and most authentic self.

4. Leadership is less concerned with pep talks and more concerned with creating a place in which people can do good work, can find meaning in their work, and can bring their spirits to work.

5. Leadership, like life, is largely a matter of paying attention.

6. Leadership requires love."

I am sure leadership is much more and beyond what is written here and I have long way to go. However, when I look at these points, I think I did all of them (atleast tried doing) and the appreciation and complements I recived makes me believe I fairly succeeded in practicing them as well.

Thanks to my team for being my mirror!

Your will be unstoppable as you chase your dreams. You will grab every opportunity
that knocks your door. You will invite new and talented people to build your business, and to
collaborate with you. These small steps may act as building blocks of a huge business
empire. But, there may be occasions when tensions and worries may surround you. Be
careful, it may take a toll on your health, says Ganesha. Divert your mind by being close to
your near and dear ones. Their love and support will provide you security that you may
require during this phase.

Charged up and in high spirits – that is precisely how you will be, now. You will so
enthusiastic that no goal, no target will seem unachievable to you. You will go all out to
achieve your aims and fulfil your and your family's desires. As they say, luck favours the
brave. Ganesha assures that everything shall fall in place, if you yourself believe in your
abilities and potential. And, your self-confidence is so high now that you are bound to succeed
in whatever you undertake. You will feel the need to enhance your technical skills, though, as
evolving and growing with time is of utmost importance. The situations shall also make you
learn the effectiveness of staying calm and not succumbing to anger. And, that is a really
useful attribute to develop.

Growth and progress look set to be the theme of this week. You may experience plenty of changes in various spheres of your life. And, coping up with this fast pace may become an issue for you. Try to be flexible and accommodating, as far as you can, and you shall sail through. If you feel direction-less and confused, try listening to others, for a change. Maintain a positive approach, and shun rigid attitudes. Once you mentally prepare yourself to go with the flow, and get ready to embrace, not resist, change, nothing shall stop you from achieving your goals, says Ganesha.

The progressive trend in your life continues, and you will concentrate on money-making opportunities and increasing your material possessions. Ganesha says there may be many important documents regarding lease of property, new project contracts, etc. to be signed and these will take up most of your time. You also wish to improve your image, so you may go on a shopping spree to replenish your wardrobe. Apart from the outer image, you may also be concerned about improving your physical and mental health, which does not mean that you are short on energy or ideas, but you realise that becoming fitter can work to your advantage. Some of your ideas may be odd, but practically they will work out just fine.

In powerless Bihar village, a school
by innovation and Skype

In an under-construction school building in Chamanpura
village of Bihar’s Gopalganj district, children are learning algebra,
chemistry, Newton’s laws of motion. There’s no teacher in the classroom, no
blackboard. The teacher is hundreds of miles away, and he is teaching via
Skype. In this very unsual school, teachers mark their attendance using a
biometric fingerprinter, and students log their attendance in a computer.

The school is even
more unusual because Chamanpura has no electricity yet. The computers are
powered by two large generators. In an undeveloped corner of a state that has
long been synonymous with underdevelopment, is unfolding a story of remarkable
enterprise and innovation — in several ways, a microcosm of the turnaround of Bihar
itself.

The hero of the story
is 36-year-old Chandrakant Singh, who founded Chaitanya Gurukul Public School
to “provide world-class, technology-enabled education” to the children of
Chamanpura, the village in which he was born, and where he completed primary
school by the light of a kerosene lamp.

A merit scholarship
took Singh to DAV College in Siwan, and then to a B.Tech from BIT, Sindri, and
an M.Tech at IIT, Bombay. Then came a one-year stint at Tata Steel, followed by
three years at Bosch in Germany — and finally, his current job as an
R&D researcher for General Motors in Bangalore.

For a man of a
distinctly academic bent of mind — he got his first patent while in Germany —
it took, oddly, an incident of lumpen politics to fire Singh’s dream. Three
years ago, when Raj Thackeray’s MNS was attacking Bihari migrants in Mumbai,
Singh decided he needed to do something.

“I was greatly
disturbed, and wanted to arrest the migration of students from Bihar, in my
small way,” he said. The first instinct was to get in touch with the principal
of the primary government school in Chamanpura with an offer to fund six
students who would pass a scholarship test. But the principal never conducted
the test.

Singh then sought the
advice of Surya Narayan, dean of IIT, Bombay, who suggested that he make a
business plan for a revenue-generating, self-sustaining model instead of taking
the charity route. Singh then wrote a 100-page plan — a blueprint for a Rs
30-crore campus that would be completed over 10 years, including a school, an
engineering college and an R&D centre. He e-mailed the plan to 3,000
friends, eight of whom agreed to fund it. With these eight and himself, Singh
formed the Chaitnaya Gurukul Trust.

After the state
government approved the proposal, the trustees met the villagers of Chamanpura
and told them of the first step of the project — the Class I-VII Chaitanya
Public School. Within three months, they had 13 acres of land — from 100
villagers who sold plots from 3 decimals to an acre in size, at a price that
was 30 per cent above market rates.

The construction of
the school began in May 2009, and the generators — 15 KVA and 25 KVA — came
first. A year and a half later, the school has 45 rooms on two Wi-Fi-enabled
floors — 10 of which are classrooms, each with an LCD monitor or a projector,
the rest being offices, a library, a 17-machine computer lab with 24-hour
broadband Internet, and residential quarters for students and teachers.

There are four
volleyball courts, four badminton courts and a cricket pitch. A swimming pool
is under construction.

Teachers came from
across Bihar, through a competitive exam. Sixteen of them received two months
of training from teachers at Mount Carmel School and IIT professors at
Bangalore. They were taught how to use Powerpoint and Flash technology, and
given lessons in team-building and motivation.

Singh is himself on
the faculty, teaching residential students Math on weekends via Skype from
Bangalore. At a class attended by The Indian Express, he taught Class VI
students concepts of perimeter and area, with his voice running behind diagrams
and graphs on screen.

“Knowledge gained
through pictures and interaction stays longer,” said Singh. Several other
offsite trustees teach via Skype: Pankaj Kumar, a BIT, Sindri almunus, teaches
Physics from his home in Singrauli, MP, where he works with NTPC, and Sanjay
Rai, from BITS, Pilani, teaches Chemistry from Korwa, UP, where he works with
HAL.

The school’s first
session opened in April 2010 with 500 students, 10 per cent of the number of
applicants. The students came from all backgrounds — there is Om Prakash, son
of a rickshawpuller from neighbouring Hakam village, seven-year-old Rima, whose
father is an engineer in Chennai, and Harshita Kumar, the 10-year-old daughter
of a doctor in Ballia, UP.

But most students are
from 50 villages in Chhapra, Siwan and Gopalganj districts, many of them as far
as 15 km away from the school. The basic tuition fee is Rs 300 for Class I and
increases by Rs 100 for every class upward. Hostel residents are charged Rs
4,000 a month — but concessions are made depending on the income of the child’s
family, which the trustees ascertain themselves by travelling to their villages
and meeting their families.

10 Everyday Reasons Why Trigonometry is Important in
your Life?

Mathematics is a subject that is vital for gaining a better perspective
on events that occur in the natural world. A keen aptitude for math
improves critical thinking and promotes problem-solving abilities.
One specific area of mathematical and geometrical reasoning is trigonometry
which studies the properties of triangles. Now it's true that triangles
are one of the simplest geometrical figures, yet they have varied
applications. The primary application of trigonometry is found in
scientific studies where precise distances need to be measured.

The techniques in trigonometry are used for finding relevance in
navigation particularly satellite systems and astronomy, naval and
aviation industries, oceanography, land surveying, and in cartography
(creation of maps). Now those are the scientific applications of the
concepts in trigonometry, but most of the math we study would seem
(on the surface) to have little real-life application. So is trigonometry
really relevant in your day to day activities? You bet it is. Let's
explore areas where this science finds use in our daily activities
and how we can use this to resolve problems we might encounter. Although
it is unlikely that one will ever need to directly apply a trigonometric
function in solving a practical issue, the fundamental background
of the science finds usage in an area which is passion for many -
music! As you may be aware sound travels in waves and this pattern
though not as regular as a sine or cosine function, is still useful
in developing computer music. A computer cannot obviously listen to
and comprehend music as we do, so computers represent it mathematically
by its constituent sound waves. And this means that sound engineers
and technologists who research advances in computer music and even
hi-tech music composers have to relate to the basic laws of trigonometry.

Trigonometry finds a perfect partner in modern architecture. The
beautifully curved surfaces in steel, stone and glass would be impossible
if not for the immense potential of this science. So how does this
work actually. In fact the flat panels and straight planes in the
building are but at an angle to one another and the illusion is that
of a curved surface. Neat huh!

Digital imaging is another real life application of this marvelous
science. Computer generation of complex imagery is made possible by
the use of geometrical patterns that define the precise location and
color of each of the infinite points on the image to be created. The
image is made detailed and accurate by a technique referred to as
triangulation. The edges of the triangles that form the image make
a wire frame of the object to be created and contribute to a realistic
picture. Several imaging technologies that apply the concepts of trigonometry
find usage in medicine. The next time you go in for an advanced scanning
procedure, be sure to check out how the sine and cosine functions
you learn at school find a practical application is medical techniques
such as CAT and MRI scanning, in detecting tumors and even in laser
treatments. Whoever said studying math has only an academic value!
Need other reasons to know how formulae in trigonometry make life
easier for you? Now we all use patterns and symmetry in relating to
objects around us. For instance there is a need for harmony and symmetrical
agreement even if you are just redecorating your home. You need to
be sure about angles and positioning when deciding lighting arrangements.
And although you won't need to write out sine formulae for this one,
you will still be using the basic laws of triangles in deciding the
best angle to show off that trendy lamp on your study table!

Trigonometry is an arty science that can be used
to measure the heights of mountains? So why would we want to measure
the heights of mountains. Because this information is of great value
for aircraft designing and navigation. And if this sounds overly technical
think about the time when you last took a vacation at a hill station.
You might be surprised how much this information comes in handy to
tourists, for example those with medical conditions that prevent them
from traveling to very high altitudes. So the next time you want to
go trekking you might want to know the actual altitude you might be
traversing.

Learning math sure makes us smart and adept at solving tricky situations.
From tacking brain-teasers and jigsaws to the more complex crises,
the application of basic laws of math and geometry are many. Not only
does math provide a strong basis for resolving everyday issues, it
undoubtedly helps handle situations with a positive approach.

The mathematical world would be 3 part post, where I will be talking and posting about the development and evolution of maths and in the last part of this series will talk about the math around us!!

Thus, methods like fingers, pebbles in containers, marks on clay tablets (present day tally marks), notches on sticks, and knots on cords were developed for keeping records and counting of numbers. The knots, notches, marks either represented a single number or a group of numbers.

As the civilizations grew and bureaucracy rose, the system of trades & taxes evolved, size of numbers increased, which lead to the development of more and more complex numbers and number system.

More recently, during the past 2,000 years or so !!, various systems of writing have been used to represent numbers. The decimal system or the base 10 system which is also known as Hindu-Arabic number system was actually discovered in India. The decimal is based on ten symbols (0, 1, 2, . . . 9) and rules for combining them in which position is crucial (for example, in 504, the 4 stands for 4 units, the 5 stands for five hundreds, and the zero stands for no additional tens). In expanded form:

504=5x10^2+0x10^1+4x10^1

The Roman number system, which is still used for some purposes (but rarely for calculation), is made up of a few letters of the alphabet and rules for combining them (for example, IV for four, X for ten, and XIV for fourteen. The roman system didn’t have any symbol for zero, besides that it was based on addition of numerals- which was a major drawback of this system hence didn’t find much application except in watch dials!

eg: if i had to write 34 i will be writing XXXIV.=10+10+10+4 and I had to write a million it would take me about half a million digits to represent it!

There is one more system around which our whole world revolves. It is the binary system—the mathematical language of computers and almost all the electronic gadgets which we use. Binary language uses just two symbols, 0 and 1, which can be combined in exponential form to represent any number. Eg:

5=101=1x2^2+0x2^0+1x2^0

6=110=1x2^2+1x2^1+0x2^0

Notice the decreasing power of 2 which is same as we observe in decimal system.

Similar to binary system there many other number systems like hexadecimal (base 16) & octadecimal( base 8) which are used to represent bits and bytes in the world of computers.

Watch this interesting video which covers how the maths has evolved in the the ancient time.

Understanding Numbers:

Whole numbers:

There are different kinds of numbers. The numbers that come from counting things are whole numbers, which are the numbers we mostly use in everyday life. A whole number by itself is an abstraction for how many things there are in a set but not for the things themselves.

If I say 1 million, it may mean 1million Rs/dollar/pounds, cars, population of city, virus population in a sample etc etc!. In most practical situations, we want to know what the objects are, as well as how many there are. Thus, the answer to most calculations is a magnitude and a label connected to it in other words a number connected to a label.

Let us take an example:

If you traveled 160 Km in 4 hours, your average speed was 40 Km per hour, not 40. In this instance, 160, 4, and 40 are numbers/magnitudes; Km, hours, and Km per hour are labels. It is the labels which give meaning to numbers.

Without the labels numbers don’t have any real significant application. This reminds me of my school days where a ½ mark or 1 mark was deducted whenever the units were missing from the final answer!

Similarly when we teach kids counting on fingers it is important to realize that it is the number of fingers we are counting and not just reciting numbers.

That marks the end of the first post. In the next part will talk about fractions, symbols, probability and data handling!
And through our "ACTIONS" keep spreading the good message the person was doing...

"The Soul WILL Rest in Peace"

The Full Monty

Full Monty is just another name for the Full MaRathon... 42.195 kms of nerve breaking, body shattering and a Dead Brain... This is what you are looking at once you have commenced your journey..... Mind you Its a journey and not a run..taking you through various ups and down!

Its a suicidal run if you not practiced at all... And high efficacy-Self inflicting if you have practiced...

Coming out of illness with no practice I was on a suicidal track to glory..

On 17th Jan I started one such journey with two of my frnds( Ghoda & Gandhi) ... A self excruciating journey...!

On the start line I met the running stalwarts of my running world.. Bhasker Dada ,Madhur , and Dr Roy( 78 yrs old)...

Bhasker Desai(BD) is "The GOD"( I mean tht in every literal sense) . He is someone whom every athlete would be envy of and proud of too...

BD is 58 yrs old now... When I first met him at Arey colony for a practice run he out ran me by by abt 10 mins in a 18 km run.. Then I again met him at SCMM-09 . BD did HM in 1:45 and I in 2:20.... Beating me by a good 35 mins...

This time again we in MM, running the FM... BD does that in 5 hrs..Without training a single day in last 5 months,,,!!!

Madhur,45 yrs old and a seasoned runner finishes in 5:15

So that is why I call BD "The God"!! Hail GOD BD.....

Coming back to the Run.... Started the run with BD ran the first Km with him, but he was too fast, found it difficult to keep pace with him,... Then I joined Madhur the Gyan-Ganga of Marathon.. He carries HRM and pace moniter ... I tght y not make u of the technology :)

The initial pace was at 4:30 finish... Then Madhur Suggested its too hot-humid so we need to drop the pace... We were now looking at 5:15 finish....

Madhur suggested BD to drop his pace.... But BD has his own style of running..!! He doesnt give a DAMN to technology...

Ran for 8kms with him( till the end of peddar road slope)... My pace dropped further.... Then Madhur disappeared...

From the other side of the Lane Met Ayush (14km mark) and Sanghi....

Both running his first HM were quite excited Ayush was excited for completing it in 2:30, whereas Sanghi was excited about the girls( short skirts/ 2 piece)...

Just before the 17km Rajat over took me.... on the other side of the LAne waved to Ghod who was behind by leass thn a KM.... Everything looked well till then.. No physical pain or mental drain......

BUt then the feet started aching, couldn't put my feet on ground... I decided that I would walk- run till 28kms, would drop out after that.....

Then came Chingi from behind, he encouraged me to continue running.... We started doing 2min run 1 min walk... Was finding it difficult to do that too... Then I saw Dr Roy walking ahead of me.... Which means that despite I running till 21km mark he was walking faster than me !!! I & chingi tried to keep with pace wid him.. couldn't do so for for thn 3km....

It must have been 10, sun was Blazing Hot..! crowd had started thinning...water stations were disappearing....

The first tghts of taking a taxi started coming to my mind.... Chingi asked me continue till the start of the sea link...I decided to continue till there and will then take cab from there....

Reaching the sea link Chingi said " Chall yaar cross kar le, sea link par decide kar lengey kab taxi main baithna hai" From behind came walking a group of 3-4 old aged(mid 60's) uncles, they encouraged us to keep walking with them,,, But they too were too fast for us...

The only incentive of climbing the link was that I will get to cross the next two detectors at 24 and 30km before 12:40.....

We started climbing the link..... 24 km RFID detector, I land my feet on it NO BEEP.... and my heart broke... I check it with Chingi if it beeped for him, he too said no......

400mts onto the bridge finish vehicle came to announce that roads will open and we can board it if we wish too,,,, I imagined Ghoda and Gandhi both sitting inside it :)..... I thn tght if anyone of them was inside then they would have definitely waved at me and ask me to join them !!

But Alas it didnt happened...:( Otherwise I would have boarded it right away....

Blazing Sun greeted us at the bridge..... I bowed to Surya Deva and said" Raksha Karna Bhagwaan"....dont kill me or make me suffer due to dehydration.....

Continued walking thinking better I should have taken the CAB at the start of the bridge... What is the point of taking the CAB from the other side, when the same cab would have taken me back to the starting point.....!!!! and Besides I wud have to pay the toll too!!

Reached the end of the bridge, no sign of TAXI :((

Meanwhile Ghoda raced to me.... Was Happy to see him, got another partner and motivation to reach the end line.....

Now it was Chingis turn to give up..I told him we have reached 29km mark so just another 13km to go....Motivated him to keep moving... Now I was moving just becoz Ghoda was moving....

Ghoda reveled why is is he still continuing...... Besides carrying the haunting memories of last yr run he had a target which could have made any lame dumb-ass male to move his legs,,,, But for him it was the guilt of taking the taxi for 3kms last whn he had run... HE advised me if you take the taxi you have this guilt for the next yr...

But for me the more than the Taxi thing it was the loser thought of not being able to finish in stipulated time....

But I had nothing to race for... No Gf no Fiancee, neither had I trained once for the race.... I had crossed the max distance I had ever done..... I wasn't making to the finish line before 12:40...No photu finish.....Waht i was looking at was a dismal 7 hrs finish...

By now all the Kms markers were taken off the road....... We didnt knew where we were standing..... It was freaking bull shit to continue running....Couldn't spot more thn 7 ppl walking to reach the finish line.... For the older ones the achievement was to reach the finish the line...

Chingi was making a pittstop at every juice stall that fell on the way.... This was irking me as I didnt wanted to stand stall.... I wanted to keep moving my dumb ass. for no reason.... Ghoda didnt stop for us, he kept moving for the good... Being under the favor of Chingi supporting me when I had given, I couldnt have given up on him.. So I waited for him where ever he wanted to take break.....!!

Moved for about 1.5 kms then came the breaking point..... Chingi * I decided to take the taxi... no more of the chutiyatik madness....

Sat in CAB first crossed goda(~200mts,Attria Mall),Chingi asked me to pickup Ghoda, I told him he has target lets not derail him...We hid in the car so tht he dont see us,,,

then crossed two guys wearing white Nutrilite T-shirts.... Chingi suddenly suffered the "GUILT" I too felt a bit bad, got down before Haji Ali- chingi paid 13 rs to taxi

And we were on our foot again :( Chingi asked me Ghodey wht are you gng to say to ghoda? I told him we can say we crossed him at Haji Ali..I knew you cannot hide the lie when there is only one way to reach the the finish point and just 7 runners in the hunt...!!

Reached the deadly Peddar road flyover.... With no water in the last 4 kms, was feeling the thirst... Then came 3 angels... An uncle with his two daughters was still serving water/orange/iglucose biscuits to the runners.... It was 1:130pm then..I and Chingi were overwhelmed...

We saluted the spirit of Mumbai and moved ahead.... Chingi rang to his boss to find out how many Kms were left... He told 3kms, I knew it was more thn tht..but i believed him, just to give some peace to my mind.... there came guy in Honda City carrying water bottles in his car...!!! I gulped the 300lts aquafina...

Chowpaty looked like a endless road... never seemed to be ending.... After that met a hot couple...:D

The lady offered a cold bisleri right out from the icebox and few raisins( kishmish) ...... Drank a few mls poured the rest on my head.....

reached a point where another gentleman said 3 more kms... I again knew it is more than 3 km...

All the Way I kept looking for the signal which turns left towards the finishing point...from there it is about 2 kms....

First signal no.... :( .. Near the first signal me a 45 yr old uncle..... He was walking all the way clicking the pics...He carried a bag with his SLR and a water pouch.... I and Chingi joined him.... He kept chattng all the way tht sometime made it a little less painful to reach the finish line...

Sometime it was irritating, i felt like let me walk like a zombie dont disturb else I'll kill you...

100 mts before the finish line he asked me to smile and not look pathetic... !!!

I try to smile pulling my lips apart... I tght of running the last 100 mts, but felt like a loser... so just kept walking along the pavement.....

Touched the finish line but with no sense of accomplishment....2 mins later came chingi...

THe uncle asked me to take his photu with VT in the backdrop... He wanted precision in every pic..... After completing 42kms this guy still had the enthu for other things...Why doesnt he run is ass off and go home...?...I just wanted rush home.... Chingis boss( he had collected it for Chingi in adv) told they are still giving the finishers medal, I rushed to the holding area..Thinking to grab one for me and Ghoda... Alas!!

Waited for Ghoda he was in there in 10 mins... I was eagerly waiting to see Ghodas reaction when he touches the fnish line :) Ghoda Hugged ( not me!!) ... Seeing his reaction Finally I had a genuine smile on my face... :D

The only guilt I had in the end was I lied to Ghoda about overtaking him at Haji Ali.. For Ghoda finishing before would have been icing on the cake..!! But he seemed too busy eating the cake.!!

Today when Ghoda came to know I took the cab, he was elated, he came to verandah a jumped wid joy :)

I am now guilt free.....

BUt I am saddened coz all those old age people crushed and my self respect & my ego... running and walking past me on their way to Glory...!!

Race Result: 1) Gandhi

                      2) Ghoda

                       3) Shukla (Disqualified)

The Moral of the story: 1) Run the FULL MONTY only if you have a GF and u wish to prove your manhood....!

2) Dont Run if you haven't trained and you know you dont have anyone to prove to!

3) Be a volunteer once in my life for the runners helping them refuel till the end....!( conclusion from discussion with Chingi & Ghoda)

Life........Random Thoughts

With pressure mounting from all sides, a lot introspection and retrospection has been going on.
The Question?

What does one need in life? Why are we on earth for? Money, good life?

In most cases we can buy happiness with money.. but certainly it does not mean that you have money if you are leading a good life. a maid can be happy earning 20k pm but can a well educated person be? That too when all his peers are earning twice of what you are earning....In that case you think of pushing yourself and try to raise yourself to their level. It's not that you become envy of them. It would be a foolishness to envy when 90 out of 100 are doing well and you aren't that too when those 90 are ready to pull you up.... Here 90 people have thrown up a challenge to you.

1 student out of 100 is a genius we say its a exception and one can try and accept the fact. but when 90 out of 100 are genius we cannot label it as exception...

In that case you are an exception and a bad exception.!!

If you go by Darwin's principle of survival of the fittest. You would be an extinct species... OR
Consider the case: Lizard and Snake. In my more then 10 meetings with her,Haven't ever heard her talking about medicine
Her Job Profile:
1) Well known to make your life tough, specially after the hospi Dr's have badly screwed you and you are fighting to save your life by running away from the hospi.
2) Chatting endlessly on phone.
3) The only thing worth mentioning that she do is signing the PINK slip.

If this is all she do then why not recruit a BlonDE from a local MBA college. At least would serve more purpose then an old gujju lady!! :P

A recent encounter:
Last sem after the hopsi Dr' had badly screwed with a small abscess i had, I was recommended to have an operation within 2 days. That day i had missed a quiz so i wanted to get a pink slip.
There was no way i could have got myself opened in IIT hospi. after standing in queue for 30 mins i got a chance to speak to her.
scene: reading my file ---
SMO : You must get operated soon. condition is critical.
Me: no way.! i want go home and will get the surgery done there. And i would like to have a second opinion before i really go for a surgery.
SMo: what is the problem in IIT hospi. We have all the facilities,We'll take good care of you, give u medicine, food etc in time..... LOL!!!!
Me:I really doubt whether i will be able to survive here. The Dr here are a bunch of Quacks.
Smo: Ok... where will u go then.
Me: hinduJa or may be to HN hospi.
SMo: Hinduja has bed problems. They are short of bed most of the time.
HN hospi isnt so good. The Dr there aren't so good. So please call your LG/Parents. I would explain them the whole situation and guide them. lol!!
Me: It will take atleast 1 day for my parents to come here. Why don't you give a pink slip and let me go.you are wasting my time.I can go to better hospi in bombay and get myself examined.

Smo: i cannot...You must be having LG's here. bring them
Me: i said yes....{although i don't have any}
dying of pain I ran to my dept i requested one of the project to become my LG.Explained him the whole situation.Cam back to hospi and found that SMo had gone for an hour long lunch .

Finally after signing at few places she let me go.

In another incident that day:
my friend Avinav was suffering from cough and cold.he started developing some breathing problem. he too wanted to go home. But Smo stopped him. Finally his mom flew in from delhi.Wasting a lot of precious time of the poor chap more then 10 hrs.In this much time he himself would have reached delhi. but who explains the brainless SMO.

next in the Hierarchy comes The visiting Dr's

1) Just 3 days back i suffered a wrist injury. the Dr in hospi asked me to see the orthopedic surgeon. the receptionist tell that all the appointments are filled for this week. you can get the appointment for 14th Feb.( that is after days from now).
probing the receptionist i came to know that the orthopedic Dr visit 2wice in a week sees only 12 patients in a day.

Now do they expect me to roam around with a broken wrist for 7 days..What crap! huh :X(

2)the surgeon : the surgeon also visits 2wice in a week.dont know how many patients he checks in a day.Officially his timings are from 1.30 to 5pm.the receptionist give u appointment for 1.30 pm. you reach there 1.45 assuming the Dr will come as per IST.
BUt he comes at 3.15 pm.

Next time again I get the appointment for 1.30pm . thinking that he "ll come late and will be there till 5pm skipping my lab in between this time I visit him at 4.30 pm.
Reaching there i came to know Dr has already left as there were no more patients.

what needs to be done:
Since all these Dr's have a pvt practice too so they are always in a hurry to go back.
So it is essential to see that they remain iit till their contracted time(2hr,3hrs whatever it be) and secondly there should be no limitation to the number of patients they see.

Next are the regular Dr's:

1 ) YS Khobragade: The most unskilled Dr of IIT. The man with the mask. The Dr who treats the patients as untouchable.
Not many ppl in IIT have been able to see his face as he is always wearing a mask on his face.Only the unlucky ones who consistently visit hospi so many time get this chance.
Would touch you only in highly extreme cases. he wouldn't even touch to check you pulse rate leave alone any wound or injury you suffered.

I owe my recent worsening of health resulting into an operation to him. Had he examined my abscess properly it wouldn't had to miss my approx. one month of lectures.
He just had a superficial look at the abscess and gives me a painkiller and one more medicine.
No antibiotics . Any normal human being knows that you require an antibiotic in cases like this. But Khobragade doesn't.

2) Dr hazel sunil: One of the few respected Dr in IIT. Probably the only Dr in IIT who uses a stethoscope. Have never seen any other Dr using a stethoscope and doubt if the carry one. You can always a find a long queue of patients outside her room.

but unfortunately she is here on contract and is not a permanent Dr in IIT.

3) Dr Ainapure: she is another popular Dr in hospi, supposedly the oldest Dr in hospi,.she is supposed to be a child specialist but consults patients of all ages children, aunties, old aged uncles all visit her.another Dr with a long queue outside her room. Have successfully been able to establish a patronage.

4) Dr Sheetal Kaley: She is new addition to the bunch of Quacks! A frnd of mine goes to her with a mouth ulcer. She ask him to take a few blood tests and gives him tablets for Liver. rather then giving some ointment for mouth ulcers or b-complex capsules she gives him tablets for Liver .

Later the test also reveled there is nothing wrong with his liver.
Fortunately no side effects happened.

Rest other Dr are like shit ,no better than RMP's (road side medical practitioner). Doubtful if they even posses a 1st class degree.
All the Dr;s here have been provided a PC in their, even the dressing room has a computer their.
You can find the compounder there checking his yahoo mail. Always trying to install yahoo messenger for linux. The desktop is full of rpm files of yahoo messenger.

don't know what is the use of a computer for a compounder, why not give the PC's to my dept which is highly short of a working Pc. where at a time not more then 8-9 Pc's are in working state.

The compounder's and the sisters form the last tier :

s Recently is discovered all the male staff members of the hospi can act a compounder.
Post operation I had to go for dressing everyday. In 20 days of dressing as many as 5 different ppl did my dressing and only two of them were compounder's.(which i discovered later)

since the regular compounder was on vacation so they had made a make shift arrangement.after all does dressing requires any skills? just remove the bandage and clean the wound with the antiseptic solution. and put a new bandage.
Ho gayi dressing!! as simple as that!!!

For different kinds of wounds you require different antiseptics. for the 1st 10 days my wound was cleaned using a IIT- made antiseptic solution later when the original compounder came back he told me that the solution they used before could have rot my wound as it had very high water component in it!!!in post operation case you use betadine solutions.

Fortunately nothing happened!!!

Nurses: Most the nurses are good. but there is one particular nurse she likes seeing human blood!!! must have been a vamp in one of her previous births..... :P
She never gives an injection in one go. Here is a stepwise guide for any wannabe nurse:

1st step: she'll put the syringe in your veins then inject a bit liquid
2nd : Will now pump in some blood back into the syringe.
3rd: Take the syringe out of your vein and have a good look at the red cloured liquid in syringe.
4th: Now she"ll administer the injection.

Three Nights in hospi: IF you really want to test your nerves. spending 3 nights in IIT hospi is the ideal way to do that.
Here are a few excerpts from my 3 night stay there:

1) The person lying on the bed next to me was psycho, he was being teated for some psychological disorder where in he used get Aggravated seeing female

2) on the other side was a bengali, whose good looking GF used to visit him daily.

3)Syrup of Death: You being given a syrup with an alive COCKROACH in it.
IT was about 2am and of the nurse came and gave the syrup to drink. as about to drink it...
but suddenly noticed 2 hair like things coming out of the syrup.
The color of syrup and cockroach was exactly the same providing with perfect example of camouflage. it brought back the memory of my 6th std. where we used to learn how animal use camouflage for their advantage.

These days were horrible, spent sleepless night with nightmares that the bajoo wala psycho guy will wake up at night and stab me with a knife.
May be it was due to this sleeplessness that i was a bit alert and didn't drank that syrup of death.

Or may be it teaches you a lesson that you must be alert at even 3 am night.!! Death can knock at your door anytime!!

Just 2 days back i got the oppurtunity to go for Dandia with my lab mates. So six of us went for Dandia:
1) ME, 2) Vaibhav bhai. aka Sarkar 3)Dr Sahab 4) Kuldeep 5)Dilip a.k.a Shivaji 6) Sanju bhai

All filled with energy & enthused to shake their booty!!

6 IITn's gng somewhere well dressed then there is somethng definitly wrong!!
each one of has had only one wish...." to dance wid a girl" although Kuldeep had different plans he was intrested in "Aunty's":P

apart from that me & Dr shab also had a hunting job do " an ideal match for our Sarkar"
Our Sarkar has been gng through a roug patch....Recently many had come and gone in his life..Latest one being Dolly!! Not able to see Sarkars pain Dr. Shab promises Sarkar to find a match for him..& end his sorrows!!

so well reached the "Ground"....The first round of Dandia starts,in goes Sarkar, kuldeep and shivaji,,. Me, Dr Shahb & sanju all being gifted with double left feet decide to stay out and watch other ppl dance.:D .... being shy and timid ,when it comes to dancing in public it was a huge challange for me..
The only form of dance i knew was "Free Style"..had never done dandiya b4..

Standing out and carefully observing ppls
1)first the leg movement
2) Then the Hand movement
Now integrating both of them and trying to practise in my mind.(left foot fwd, then 2 step back, then jump 2 steps fwd with a clap of hand!!!) by the time i had practsd the moves umpteen number of time,I was dragged into the cricle by Sarkar. !! And there i was on" display" showing my dancing skills amongst 100 odd Michael Jackson's....& J.Lo.
I realized i wasnt dancing that bad.1st round finishes,Dr shab apllauding me..round after rounds passed..people showing all kind of complicated steps. But i was there doing slow and steady dancing with same one step. whenevr i tried to copy other ppl steps, my legs would entangle & i"ll end up losing my balance.
