<p>Part of the Fifty/50 Group— and located right next door to sibling restaurants Roots and Homestead— West Town Bakery &amp; Diner looks like your favorite college town hangout. Walk in and you’ll notice the eye-popping street art and graffiti, colorful seats and stools, and references to the Wu-Tang Clan. This isn’t a stuffy place or your run-of-the-mill diner.</p>
<div id="attachment_12509" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12509" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-baked-good-and-interior.png?resize=610%2C458" alt="Interior of West Town Bakery and Baked Goods" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>At the same time, West Town Bakery is definitely a step up from the university grease joint where you had to see your friend&#8217;s band play in the back of 12 times. They use local ingredients whenever possible, have dining options for vegetarians and vegans, and creatively play off of classic diner food. Plus, you’ll immediately start drooling at the sight of their huge display case filled with doughnuts, pastries, cakes, and cookies all baked in house.</p>
<h2>Your Morning Commute Doughnut</h2>
<div id="attachment_12480" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12480" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-4.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="bacon and coffee donuts at west town bakery in chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-4.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-4.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-4.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-4.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Nothing really compares to the joy of a <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2014/07/best-donuts-in-chicago-top-11/" target="_blank">fresh doughnut in the morning</a>. Wicker Park residents may have a Stan’s Donuts right by the Damen Blue Line stop, but more than a mile south the options are a little limited. Fortunately, West Town Bakery has every treat you can imagine.</p>
<div id="attachment_12499" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12499" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-23.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="croissant doughnut in chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-23.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-23.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-23.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-23.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>During my visit I tried a maple bacon donut—the bacon added just a hint of savory to balance out the maple sweetness—and a perfect coffee donut that would be an excellent pairing with your morning cup of java. If you’re looking to get a bit more adventurous, I also sampled a croissant doughnut that was stuffed with crème and tasted like a s’more.</p>
<h2>Breakfast and Lunch</h2>
<div id="attachment_12500" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12500" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-24.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="west town bakery benedict" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-24.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-24.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-24.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-24.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>If you’re sticking around to dine at West Town Bakery, you’ll find plenty of diner classics like thick-cut French toast and eggs Benedict, but you’ll also find some slight twists on familiar favorites.</p>
<div id="attachment_12479" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12479" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-3.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Duck Confit Cubano at West Town Bakery" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-3.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-3.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-3.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-3.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>For instance, I tried the Duck Confit Cubano that keeps the ham while switching out the pork for juicy, tender duck. A lot of times the pork on the average Cuban sandwich can be tough and dry, but the switch to duck added an unexpected yet tasty flavor element, was perfectly moist, and sandwiched between two pieces of delicious French bread and crisp zucchini pickles.</p>
<div id="attachment_12478" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12478" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-2.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="grilled cheese at west town bakery in Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-2.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-2.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-2.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Likewise, the loaded <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2015/04/15-ooey-gooey-grilled-cheese-must-haves-in-chicago/" target="_blank">grilled cheese sandwich</a> has American cheese and ham– yet it’s topped with a mornay sauce that blends together a variety of cheeses for a taste that’s much more complex than what your parents gave you when you were young.</p>
<h2>Bottom Line on West Town Bakery &amp; Diner</h2>
<div id="attachment_12501" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12501" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-25.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="french toast at west town bakery" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-25.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-25.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-25.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/West-Town-Bakery-25.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>With a shortage of great breakfast places around Damen and Chicago, West Town Bakery only needed to be okay to survive. However– like the rest of the <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/?s=Fifty%2F50+Group" target="_blank">Fifty/50 Group’s restaurants</a>, West Town Bakery manages to offer an experience that’s comforting and familiar, but at the same time fresh and exciting. Whether you’re grabbing a pastry on the way to work or sitting down for a weekend brunch, you’re going to be happy.</p>

Head just a little bit south of Randolph to 1045 W. Madison Street and you’ll find the Mad Boiler, a Cajun seafood boil restaurant that opened a few months ago.</p>
<p>Opened by the husband-and-wife team of Stanley Liem and Sara Katekaew—also owners of Miku Sushi in Lincoln Square—the Mad Boiler is all about getting down and dirty with some delicious seafood…in a bag. This is a restaurant that’s fun, very casual, and a bit out of the ordinary.</p>
<h2>Mad Boiler Atmosphere</h2>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12439" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-21.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Mad Broiler Chicago Interior" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-21.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-21.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-21.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />The seafood boil is a growing trend here in Chicago, but this was my first experience eating like this so I didn’t quite know what to expect. With the quirky name and little crab in the logo, my only inclination would be this restaurant would be kind of goofy or kitschy.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12442" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-17.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Seating at Mad Broiler Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-17.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-17.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-17.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />Thankfully, at least from my perspective, the décor is not silly or pretentious. The restaurant is very simple, clean, and relatively no frills. The setup is very much geared around the fact you’re going to be eating a messy dinner that needs to be cleaned up quickly. That means paper table cloths, plastic cups, lobster bibs and plastic gloves, and sinks right in the restaurant. This is a dining experience you can’t take too seriously when everyone is wearing plastic protection, and the restaurant made the right decision with the vibe.</p>
<h2>Ordering</h2>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12440" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-19.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Mad Broiler Menu" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-19.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-19.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-19.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />At first sitting down and looking at the menu, I was a little overwhelmed by all my options, but it’s a lot easier than it looks. First, decide what type of seafood you want ranging from shrimp to mussels and lobster. For the most part, you order by the pound with one pound going to be enough for a hungry person.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12450" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-11.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="bag of seafood at mad broiler chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-11.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-11.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-11.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />Next, select from garlic butter, sweet chili, coco curry, and a Cajun dry rub. Then, you choose a spice level from one to four. I picked a two and it was already decently spicy, so be wary on your first trip. You can also pick some extra add-ons for your bag like sausage, potatoes, corn, and rice. The food arrived very quickly after ordering, in a bag, with protective plastic, a couple cracking devices, and a bucket to discard shells.</p>
<h2>Eating</h2>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12445" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-14.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="bag of shrimp at mad boiler" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-14.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-14.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-14.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />After a very short time waiting while sipping on a very strong margarita—they do have a full bar available—the food arrived inside a very hot plastic bag. I first opened up my bag of shrimp ordered with the heads off (you can choose to keep them on). These were prepared in the Cajun rub with a mild spiciness level, which was decently fiery. The remaining shells popped off very easily and the shrimp were very juicy and delicious. For my sides, I received some very tender and well-spiced pieces of sausage along with some hearty potatoes that had absorbed a lot of the seasoning and juices. As mentioned before, just one bag of shrimp and two sides was more than enough for one hungry person.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12447" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-13.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="lobster tail at mad boiler chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-13.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-13.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-13.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />In a separate bag, I tried an order of lobster tail that amounted to two smaller-sized tails. Though I had some cracking tools, I found it easy enough to get the meat out of the shells. The lobster was cooked perfectly and seasoned with their garlic butter sauce, which seemed like a no-brainer to me. All of their sauces are very strongly flavored, so if you’re not sure about one maybe ask to try it first or go with something familiar. Remember that since you are eating with your hands, if you have multiple orders the seasoning may travel around in a way you don’t want.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12449" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-10.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="mad boiler shrimp po’boy sandwich " srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-10.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-10.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-10.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />By the end, I was definitely a mess with juices all over my plastic protection and seafood shells were piled high in my metal tin; I definitely understood the convenience of having a sink near my table. Of course, you don’t have to go messy if you don’t want to. My dinner date tried a shrimp po’boy sandwich she said featured a tasty barbecue-type sauce, jumbo and juicy shrimp, and was very well seasoned and quite filling.</p>
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-12454" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-5.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="margarita at mad boiler chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-5.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-5.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/mad-boiler-5.jpg?w=1000 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" />Stuck in the Midwest, seafood can be hit-or-miss in Chicago. However, Mad Boiler exceeded my expectations while offering a dining experience that I’d never quite had before. I found I really enjoyed the casualness of the experience and this kind of visceral thrill of tearing through my food with my hands. And if the idea of eating shellfish from a bag doesn’t appeal to you, the Mad Boiler has plenty of traditional dishes and tasty drinks to sip on to keep any diner happy.</p>

<h2 style="text-align: center;">Jefferson Park Restaurants</h2>
<h3><a href="http://www.brgrbellyrestaurant.com/locations/gladstone-park/" target="_blank">BRGRBelly</a></h3>
<div id="attachment_12382" style="width: 260px" class="wp-caption alignright"><img class=" wp-image-12382" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?resize=250%2C250" alt="brgrbelly jefferson park restaurants" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?resize=640%2C640 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?resize=768%2C768 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?resize=50%2C50 50w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/brgrbelly-jefferson-park-restaurants.jpg?w=960 960w" sizes="(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">BRGRBelly Facebook</p></div>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to find a burger that will tame hunger, but it can take some searching to find one that exceeds the expectations of your palette. Fortunately, we&#8217;ll save you the searching part– BRGRBELLY serves up burgers in all forms, from simple to very unique combinations, such as the Good Night Irene with a crab cake, pico de gallo, and spicy remoulade sauce on top of a succulent patty. The <em>simple </em>BRGRBELLY remains a favorite though– it&#8217;s the homemade spicy sriracha pickles, especially when paired with jalepeno jack cheese. Their <a href="https://www.beermenus.com/places/15015-brgrbelly-gladstone-park" target="_blank">beer list</a> is quite respectable as well.</p>

<h3><a href="http://www.galestreet.com/" target="_blank">Gale Street Inn</a></h3>

<p>If you are a fan of fall off the bone barbecue, or can just appreciate a well executed piece of meat – you&#8217;ll find yourself right at home at Gale Street Inn. Known for their perfectly tender fall-off-the-bone and flavor balanced pork ribs. Aside from ribs alone, they have combos that pair a half-rack with hearty sides, such as seafood, jambalaya, and more. This Jefferson Park Restaurant is a staple of the area.</p>

<p>Quality sushi that is not astronomically priced can be something of an anomaly. However, Gorilla Sushi Bar has built up a loyal following on that very basis. With an extensive list of rolls to choose from, and the price point of rolls at $2.95, you can order a variety to find your favorites – or share with friends. If sushi on the couch sounds better to you, their delivery is exceptional.</p>

A phenomenal meal has a way of bringing people together – and when it comes to Mexican cuisine, you&#8217;d be hard pressed to find a restaurant with the same comforting vibe. Plus, we really love tacos and enchiladas.</p>

Pair up a bowl of Pho with fresh spring rolls and you&#8217;ll be beyond content.</p>

<p>Smak-Tak is among the most popular Jefferson Park Restaurants serving up hearty Polish dishes. Polish cuisine largely consists of pork, chicken, and beef, paired with earthy vegetables– such as potatoes. <p>Teresa II makes you feel like you are sitting down to a meal prepped by your Grandmama. The decor transports you back many years, but that is completely part of the charm. Potato pancakes and pierogis are, of course, two of the most popular dishes; which is not disappointing at all. Teresa prides herself on her homemade dill pickle soup. If it&#8217;s available when you stop in, it&#8217;s a must try. Teresa&#8217;s is so inexpensive that it may actually cost less than eating at home– and it&#8217;s way more satisfying.</p>

<p>Chicago has a vibrant food scene with new restaurants and concepts constantly popping up. But how do you continue to stay relevant when your restaurant has been around for nearly a decade? Case in point: the Fifty/50. The sports bar was one of the first of its kind on Wicker Park’s Division St. and has been lauded by numerous publications, <a href="http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/adam-richmans-best-sandwich-in-america/video/the-4-courser" target="_blank">featured by Adam Richman</a> of Man vs. Food fame, and the team behind it has gone on to create a number of popular restaurants—be sure to visit their latest, Steadfast, which we loved.</p>
<p>However, Division seems to spawn a new sports bar every month that’s only mildly different. Not to be pushed aside by the competition, the Fifty/50 has fully renovated the bar, restaurant, and pumped up the menu.</p>
<h2>Atmosphere and Décor</h2>
<div id="attachment_12344" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12344" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-5.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="fifty 50 chicago interior" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-5.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-5.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-5.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-5.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>I’m about as sports averse as they come, so going to a sports bar with blaring TVs, cheap beer spilling out of pitchers, and eating over-priced nachos covered in mysterious orange goop is not my idea of a fun time. The Fifty/50 is not like that at all and will definitely reinvent your idea of watching the game. It’s an upscale sports bar that’s clean, sleek, and not obnoxious. Remove the TVs, and you’d have no idea this was intended to be a sports bar.</p>
<div id="attachment_12339" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12339" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-10.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="fifty 50 chicago bar second floor" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-10.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-10.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-10.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-10.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Compared to the way it used to look, the restaurant is a lot brighter and inviting with prominent whites and warm woods mixed in with darker leather, metal, and some really attractive lighting fixtures. Besides looking sharp, the Fifty/50 stands out with their unique layout. Walking in, you’ll immediately notice a second layer of seating above that almost appears to be floating above you. When you’re upstairs, there’s a big cutout in the center letting you see all the action below. There’s additional seating below the ground floor and outside on the patio.</p>
<div id="attachment_12340" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12340" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-9.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="tvs at fifty/50" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-9.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-9.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-9.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-9.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>If you are interested in watching the game, flat screen televisions line the walls, though they’re not turned up to an ear-splitting volume. You’ll be able to cheer your favorite team, but at the same time could completely tune everything out and just enjoy a cocktail or burger.</p>
<h2>Drinks</h2>
<div id="attachment_12347" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12347" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-2.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Johnny and Friends Cocktail " srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-2.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-2.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-2.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>What really makes the Fifty/50 help stand out from the pack is an incredible bar menu with craft beer, whiskeys, wines, and innovative cocktails. When I was <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2016/08/steadfast-chicago-fifty50-group-embraces-fine-dining/" target="_blank">over at Steadfast</a> earlier this summer, I really loved their Johnny and Friends Cocktail, a gin-based drink with summer apple, vanilla, and a chartreuse-flavored whip cream on top. The Fifty/50 has a version of it with the same flavors, except it’s frozen to make for an excellent summer drink.</p>
<div id="attachment_12345" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12345" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-3.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="fifty/50 steigl raddler slushy" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-3.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-3.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-3.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-3.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Certainly the most unique “drink” on the menu is the snow. The Fifty/50 has a snow machine that they use to make a different alcoholic snow special each day. During my visit, they were “pouring” a Stiegl Radler and gin concoction that was light and fluffy, just like real snow, yet tasted exactly like a grapefruit-flavored Radler. There’s huge novelty value here, and the flavors and rotating selection mean you’ll want to have this again and again. Plus, there’s a real joy to seeing the bartender getting this snow machine going.</p>
<h2>Dinner</h2>
<div id="attachment_12333" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12333" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-15.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="fifty/50 chicago burger" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-15.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-15.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-15.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-15.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>The Fifty/50 serves bar food, but in a way that’s far from traditional. They’re not afraid to try unique flavor combinations of ingredients for big, delicious results. Just take a look at their <a href="http://www.thefifty50.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/the-fifty-50_lunch-dinner-menu.1-1.pdf" target="_blank">huge selection of burgers</a> and the large description underneath each on their menu.</p>
<div id="attachment_12331" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12331" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-18.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="fifty/50 O-Face burger" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-18.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-18.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-18.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-18.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>I tried the “O-Face” burger: the tender and juicy “secret triple” burger that’s topped with barbecue pulled pork, gooey cheddar, and mac and cheese baked into a waffle shape. It looked crazy and tasted amazing. Even better was it was a surprisingly clean burger that all stayed together.</p>
<div id="attachment_12335" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12335" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="chicken wings fifty/50 chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-14.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Besides the excellent burger, I also sampled some of their wings because it’s hard to ignore the big red part on the menu that says “Jumbo Wings Voted Best Wings in Chicago!” Likely the biggest chicken wings I’ve had—where do they get these chickens?—they’re crisp, but still quite juicy and tender. The spicy garlic was very good. They weren’t overly spicy, pretty clean to eat, and were a little similar to Korean-style chicken wings.</p>
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
<div id="attachment_12337" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12337" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-11.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="man waving at fifty/50" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-11.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-11.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-11.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Fifty-50-Chicago-11.jpg?w=1200 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Division Street these days is where everyone likes to come watch the game, have some drinks, and can feel more and more like a mini-Wrigleyville. However, as far as dining options, most are pretty lackluster. That’s not the case with the Fifty/50, a spot where you can watch the game while sipping on a craft cocktail or biting into a burger packed full of flavor. Better yet, the Fifty/50 is a place where you can feel comfortable and enjoy a nice dinner out any day of the week.</p>

<p>It’s noon and time for lunch. You’ve really got a craving for Antique Taco, but there’s definitely not enough time to go to Wicker Park and back on your meager lunch break. I guess you’ll have to settle for Taco Bell again…</p>
<p>If this is the sad existence you’ve led as a downtown office worker looking for a quick lunchtime bite, your prayers have been answered. The newly-opened Revival Food Hall is the food court of your dreams. Sure, Eataly is pretty cool, but Revival Food Hall is packed with local Chicago foodie favorites that you may already know and love or have always wanted to try. And it’s got everything! There’s pizza, tacos, barbecue, gelato, noodles, a coffee shop, bar, and even a record store.</p>
<h2>What is Revival Food Hall Like?</h2>
<div id="attachment_12296" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12296" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-24.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Revival Food Hall lights" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-24.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-24.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-24.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Revival Food Hall is on the ground floor <a href="http://thenationalchicago.com/" target="_blank">the National</a>, a refurbished building originally built in 1907 by Daniel Burnham. An office building and former home of CPS, Revival Food Hall definitely has that entire legacy. Marble pillars meet classic-inspired globe lights suspended on metal and quirky modern art – yet you also get the feeling that a stuffy office moved out and all the hipsters moved in.</p>
<div id="attachment_12277" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12277" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-5.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Revival Food Hall bbq smoque" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-5.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-5.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-5.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>It’s very hip as it is, but what makes it even better is each booth isn’t stuck into a drab template. Every restaurant brings a bit of their own vibe to their space, and there is seating at each one, giving you a mini-restaurant experience. Plus, the whole place is huge. There’s 24,000 square feet of space available and every corner holds something new.</p>
<h2>What Can’t I Miss Out On?</h2>
<p>Honestly, everything here is great. 15 stalls are open right now with the promise of additional pop-ups and one-offs from local chefs. Here are just a few places we loved during our initial visit:</p>

<p><strong>Antique Taco: </strong>Wicker Park’s Antique Taco is known for their very unique taco constructions. I tried a tempura-fried fish taco topped with smoked cabbage and a Sriracha tartar sauce that was out of this world.</p>
<div id="attachment_12301" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12301" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-8.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Black Dog Gelato at Revival Food Hall Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-8.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-8.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-8.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p><strong>Black Dog Gelato: </strong>I live right next door to the Damen location and have to restrain myself from going there all the time. Very likely the best gelato in the city, Black Dog’s gelato is hearty with bold and unique flavors that you might not think you’d like, but you’ll love. For this trip, I cleansed the palette a bit with their classic malted vanilla.</p>
<div id="attachment_12279" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12279" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-7.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Nashville fried hot chicken at Budlong Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-7.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-7.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-7.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p><strong>The Budlong: </strong>Soon to be all over the city, the Budlong serves Nashville fried hot chicken. It’s very deep fried, spiced with cayenne pepper (you’re getting some heat here), and served on top of white bread with pickles. While popular in the south, not many are doing this yet in Chicago, and Budlong is doing it right.</p>
<div id="attachment_12302" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12302" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-9.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Curbside Books and Records in Revival Food Hall Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-9.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-9.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-9.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p><strong>Curbside Books &amp; Records: </strong>This isn’t food, yet super cool. Local indie book publisher Curbside Splendor has a pop up next to the bar that they’ve filled with local books and records from local record labels. For a place that’s all about celebrating our local food scene, it’s the perfect addition to inject local literature and music.</p>
<div id="attachment_12286" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12286" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-14.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Graze Cheeseburger " srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-14.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-14.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Revival-Food-Hall-14.jpg?w=900 900w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p><strong>Graze: </strong>Graze has healthy bowls and morning egg sandwiches, yet I was drawn to their cheeseburger. It was super juicy and tender and gave me a warm, comforting vibe.</p>

<p><strong>Union Squared: </strong>Union Pizza in Evanston serves ultra-thin Neapolitan pizza, but for their Revival Food Booth decided to go the other way. Beyond thin crust and before deep dish, Union Squared serves Detroit-style pizza. It’s thicker, crispy, buttery crust that’s covered in red sauce and your choice of toppings.</p>

<p>Chicago’s the Fifty/50 Group has so far been known for their eclecticism with restaurants ranging from the namesake sports bar to Roots Handmade Pizza to craft cocktail lounges like the Berkshire Room. With the recent opening of Steadfast in the Loop’s business district, the Fifty/50 Group has gone to the next level with a fine dining concept that blends Mediterranean and Portuguese flavors into classic dishes, served with a stunning presentation.</p>
<h2>The Space</h2>
<div id="attachment_12246" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12246" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-31.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Steadfast Chicago elegant stairway" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-31.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-31.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-31.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-31.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Steadfast sits at the front of the New York Life Insurance building at 120 W. Monroe Street. Designed by William Le Baron Jenny and built in 1898 as an office building; the New York Life Insurance Building is a prime example of Chicago School high-rise construction that followed in the decades after the Great Chicago Fire. In the mid-2000s, there were plans to tear down the 14-story building for a 51-story high rise, but fortunately the city designated the building a historical landmark in 2006. Now the building has been converted to the brand-new Kimpton Gray hotel.</p>
<div id="attachment_12252" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12252" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-6.png?resize=610%2C458" alt="dining room of Steadfast Chicago" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>As fitting for the historical setting, the restaurant is immaculately designed– mixing both classic elements like marble table tops along with rich woods so the restaurant feels more alive and not like a relic. There’s a small patio out front, while the 104-seat interior has several unique spaces that offer very different dining experiences ranging from an all-marble private dining space to the back area with an open performance kitchen that adds an extra level of entertainment to the evening (surprisingly it’s not that noisy). Of course, the fastidiously ornate bar, with cocktails crafted by Benjamin Schiller, is the perfect place to come for a lively happy hour drink after a day at the office and feel like you’re the boss.</p>
<h2>What to Order</h2>
<div id="attachment_12219" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12219" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-4.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Steadfast Chicago table setting" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-4.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-4.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-4.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-4.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Steadfast divides their menu into snacks, medium, large, and for the table portions so there’s a little something for every type of diner whether you’re just grabbing a quick bite at the bar after work or the entire family has gathered to celebrate a special occasion. While everything I sampled was extraordinary and beautiful to look at, these were a few of my favorites.</p>
<p><strong>Chocolate Covered Foie </strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12229" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12229" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Chocolate Covered Foie" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-14.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-14.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>A decade after the <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/plus/ct-chicago-foie-gras-ban-anniversary-20160424-story.html" target="_blank">foie gras ban</a>, seeing foie gras on a menu can still seem like an act of defiance. At Steadfast, their chocolate covered foie is actually a very interesting and complex dish with the fattiness of the liver mixing with the sweetness of the chocolate and Cara Cara Orange to create a rich decadent dish that, while balanced out by the sea salt, is a perfect way to start a fine dining experience. While you can taste each ingredient, this dish is especially suited for people new to foie.</p>
<p><strong>Charcuterie </strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12228" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12228" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-13.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Charcuterie aging meat" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-13.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-13.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-13.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-13.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Take a look near the kitchen and you’ll see a window of meats gently hanging and aging to be served much later as part of Steadfast’s charcuterie menu—all prepared in house. A nine month-aged prosciutto was exceptional, while my favorite was a coffee-cured lomo topped with fried chicken skin that tasted like the best bacon you’ve ever had x 10.</p>
<div id="attachment_12236" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12236" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-21.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Steadfast fresh baked bread" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-21.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-21.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-21.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-21.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>To go along with your charcuterie, why not order a side of bread? Steadfast freshly bakes a cornucopia of breads served with an even more impressive array of butters and spreads like a creamy and sweet honey butter and an eye-popping violet cauliflower that looks like an Instagram filter in real life.</p>
<p><strong>Wood Grilled Kale</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12234" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12234" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-19.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Wood Grilled Kale Salad" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-19.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-19.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-19.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-19.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>I’ve been on a role lately with <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2016/06/logan-squares-ugos-offers-new-takes-italian-favorites/" target="_blank">great kale salads</a>, and the Wood Grilled Kale salad at Steadfast is a new favorite. Unlike most salads, this is served hot with the kale grilled to a point where it’s warm and a little crunchy– yet not quite a kale chip. It’s then topped with bacon vinaigrette, which is as amazing as it sounds, smoked and gooey goat cheese, Sumac candied pecans, and compressed pear. Like the foie, there’s a diverse blend of flavors and textures here that all come together, while also remaining equally distinct to create a salad that’s equally savory goodness, sweet reward, and healthy starter.</p>
<p><strong>Egyptian Spiced Mussels</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12238" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12238" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-23.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Egyptian Spiced Mussels" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-23.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-23.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-23.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-23.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>The presentation of everything was stunning, but seeing a fleet of perfectly arranged shells coming your way is a wonderful thing. Great for sharing with a group, the mussels are served in a Calvados cream sauce with Sumac apples. The apples provide a sweetness that covers any “fishiness” of the tender mussels. What I really like about Steadfast is how they have these dishes we’re all familiar with yet the flavor patterns are never quite what you expect.</p>
<p><strong>Butter Poached Main Lobster</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12240" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12240" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-25.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Steadfast Chicago Butter Poached Main Lobster" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-25.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-25.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-25.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-25.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>In the “For the Table” category, the lobster is a truly decadent dish. In addition to the fresh lobster in a lobster &amp; uni emulsion sauce, there’s a piece of buttery brioche topped with caviar and coffee-roasted potatoes that are probably unlike any sort of potato you’ve had before. Most people would be fine with just eating a lobster on its own, but I loved how Steadfast created this really unique flavor world with this dish. And while I’m certainly repeating myself, the dish itself looks incredible.</p>
<p><strong>Whole Roasted Duck</strong></p>
<div id="attachment_12241" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12241" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-26.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Whole Roasted Duck" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-26.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-26.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-26.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-26.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>And to finish the evening, here’s a whole duck for you. Though the price of $75 may first cause you to gasp as you look at the menu, this is a big piece of meat that will set the scene at any special occasion dinner. Dry aged for seven days and covered in a light lavender honey glaze, the duck is amazingly tender and seems to lovingly disappear and fade away in your mouth (certainly the best duck I’ve had so far in my life). <strong> </strong></p>
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
<div id="attachment_12227" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12227" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-12.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Steadfast Chicago bar" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-12.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-12.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-12.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Steadfast-Chicago-12.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>The business district downtown used to feel abandoned after the workday was over, but Steadfast is reason enough to stick around or venture out for dinner. With their new concept, the Fifty/50 Group has outdone themselves with a beautifully decorated space and incredible-looking dishes that blend classics with unexpected, complimentary flavors. Steadfast is certainly the best new restaurant I’ve tried this year.</p>

<p>You’ve spent all day cheering on the Bears, and you’ve worked up an appetite. But where to go? The South Loop’s Belly Up Smokehouse is a southern barbecue joint built for big groups looking to eat a lot and have a good time.</p>
<h2>What’s the Restaurant Like?</h2>
<div id="attachment_12187" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12187" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-1.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Belly Up entrance" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-1.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-1.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-1.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-1.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Walking into Belly Up, you’ll be astounded by how surprisingly huge it is. The restaurant is very long and has these really high ceilings. The vibe is Chicago warehouse industrial with lots of brick, exposed fixtures, and wood ceiling beams with some subtle cowboy touches like pictures of horses and stacks of faux whiskey barrels. They do love country music, so be warned if that’s not your thing.</p>
<div id="attachment_12198" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12198" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-12.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Dining Room at Belly Up Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-12.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-12.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-12.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-12.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Belly Up’s large size, massive bar, and giant circular booths make this a restaurant great for large groups and guys&#8217; nights. During my visit, there was a huge crowd that had migrated over from a Soldier Field soccer game, which seems like what Belly Up was made for.</p>
<h2>Fully-Loaded Saloon</h2>
<div id="attachment_12206" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12206" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Untitled-design-5.png?resize=610%2C515" alt="Belly Up bar and cocktails" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Belly Up is more of a restaurant than a bar, but they don’t skimp on the drinks. There’s a large amount of beers on tap, as well as a huge cold room right next to the bar stocked full of cans and bottles. And for anyone that’s not a beer drinker, there’s a long list of fun cocktails. I particularly liked the Ginger Snap, which has sweet apple pie moonshine and cranberry balanced out by crisp ginger beer. Another favorite was the smooth Shameless that features a strong Mezcal taste underlined by a hint of blueberry.</p>
<h2>Down to Business: the Barbecue</h2>
<div id="attachment_12194" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12194" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=610%2C610" alt="Belly Up bbq platter" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=640%2C640 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=150%2C150 150w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=768%2C768 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?resize=50%2C50 50w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-8.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>One of the best ways to try several different meats is to order a platter for $45 where you pick three meats and three sides, which is more than plenty for three or four people. I went right for the brisket, which had an even smoky flavor—it’s smoked for 12 hours, house rubbed, and sliced very thin—and was astoundingly tender to the point where it just seemed to melt right in your mouth.</p>
<div id="attachment_12195" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12195" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-9.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Side dishes at Belly Up Smokehouse Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-9.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-9.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-9.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-9.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>A bite of the pulled pork met expectations, but I’d highly recommend pork fans turn their attention to the baby back ribs. Easily the best dish I tried, these ribs fall right off the bone and are cooked perfectly. Regardless of what meat you get, the table comes with a full pack of barbecue sauces for you to try. As for sides, the crispy waffle fries, slightly spicy smoked mac &amp; cheese, and the corn bread are typical compliments to whatever meat you pick– but justifiably so.</p>
<div id="attachment_12189" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12189" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-3.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Belly Up South Loop Spring Rolls" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-3.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-3.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-3.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-3.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>If you have a big appetite, I’d also recommend an order of the South Loop Spring Rolls. Inside a traditional fried spring roll shell, there’s a unique, savory mix of pulled pork wontons, black beans, and pimento cheese. The interaction of the pork and pimento cheese is really interesting and tasty, and made even better after you dip the spring roll into the delicious avocado ranch sauce.</p>
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
<div id="attachment_12199" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12199" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-13.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Belly Up Chicago garage door" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-13.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-13.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-13.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Belly-Up-13.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Country music fans, dudes looking for a fun guy’s night, or anyone planning on attending a Soldier Field game with a hunger for southern-inspired smoked barbecue should enjoy Bell Up Smokehouse &amp; Saloon. While you’re there grab a beer or cocktail, and be sure to give the ribs and brisket a try!</p>

<p>Taking a road trip to Chicago or just trying decide how to spend your lazy days of summer? Chicago is a popular place to visit when the weather gets warm, but whether you’re familiar with the area or are a first time visitor, be careful when driving into and around the city. The lawyers at <a href="https://www.salvilaw.com/legal-services/chicago-car-accident-lawyer/" target="_blank">Salvi, Schostok, &amp; Pritchard</a>, remind all drivers in the Chicago area, experienced or not, to eliminate all distractions and put your focus on the road to avoid a car accident that could ruin your summer getaway. Now that you’ve been reminded to be safe and responsible driver in and around the “Windy City”, here are some Chicago summer attractions that are perfect for when you only have a few hours to spare:</p>
<h3>Chicago Beach Time</h3>
<div id="attachment_12162" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://flic.kr/p/6Hz8Bu" target="_blank"><img class="wp-image-12162 size-medium" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/3752224478_3cfe83895f_z.jpg?resize=610%2C367" alt="montrose beach in chciago" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Erin Nekervis / Flickr</p></div>
<p>If you’re like millions of other Americans who deal with winter for a good 5 months out of the year, summer is a crucial time to warm up, enjoy the sun, and get some much needed Vitamin D before winter arrives again. What better way to enjoy summer than visit a beach and have some much needed R &amp; R? Being one of the most populous cities in the U.S., it’s easy to forget that a busy city like Chicago could have one beach, let alone a handful to choose from. However, remember your geography, folks, Chicago is right along Lake Michigan. Put some of these beaches on your “must go to” list:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>31st Street Beach:</strong> This South Side beach is clean, rarely crowded, and is a great gathering place for families to enjoy a picnic or do some fishing at the public dock. With all the amenities that you need from concessions and a playground to public restrooms and a lifeguard, you can relax in the sun and enjoy the view of the Chicago skyline.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Montrose Beach: </strong>This North Side beach is a popular place for dog lovers. With a fenced-off dog area for your dog and free wifi, kayak rentals, and a restaurant nearby, there’s no need to go anywhere else for the day.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Some Other Favorites: </strong>While there’s many of beaches to choose from, some other favorites to check out are the 57th Street Beach, Illinois Beach State Park, and Foster Avenue Beach.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Chicago Festivals &amp; Events</h3>
<div id="attachment_12164" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://flic.kr/p/2j9dWn" target="_blank"><img class="wp-image-12164 size-medium" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/861658113_1275402dba_z.jpg?resize=610%2C405" alt="Chicago Blues Festival is one of many summer Chicago Summer Attractions" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/861658113_1275402dba_z.jpg?w=640 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/861658113_1275402dba_z.jpg?resize=300%2C200 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Chris Gallevo / Flickr</p></div>
<p>You can’t spend a day in Chicago without enjoying some art or music and a festival is a great way to take it all in. Regardless of what part of summer you decide to visit Chicago, you’re likely to find at least one <a href="http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/festival_events_dates.html" target="_blank">art or musical festival</a> that is too good to pass up. Want to become an honorary Chicagoan for the day? Don’t pass up the opportunity to check out the annual Blues Festival, join an outdoor exercise class in Millennium Park, or browse the aisles upon aisles of home grown goodness at the one of the many <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2016/04/2016-guide-to-farmers-markets-in-chicago/" target="_blank">Farmers Markets in Chicago</a>.</p>
<h3>Chicago Museums</h3>
<div id="attachment_5587" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-full wp-image-5587" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/iguana-1-of-1.jpg?resize=610%2C407" alt="iguana at shedd aquarium in chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/iguana-1-of-1.jpg?w=640 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/iguana-1-of-1.jpg?resize=220%2C146 220w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Ross M Perkins / The Chicago Traveler</p></div>
<p>Even if the weather is to die for, it’s always nice to take a break from the great outdoors and <a href="http://www.chicagotraveler.com/chicago_museums.htm" target="_blank">browse a museum</a> (the air conditioning is a plus on hot days), especially in Chicago. With over 30 museums to choose from, you could easily spend a week visiting them, but here are a couple you should definitely check out if your time is short:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/2012/05/top-10-things-to-do-at-shedd-aquarium-chicago/" target="_blank">Shedd Aquarium</a>:</strong> When you dip your toes in Lake Michigan, you’re not likely to see a whole lot of marine life, but if you visit the Shedd Aquarium, you have the opportunity to see 32,000 marine animals from diverse habitats, such as sharks, beluga whales, turtles, and piranhas.</li>

<p>Whether headed to the office or coming into town for a day of <a href="http://shorelinesightseeing.com/" target="_blank">sightseeing</a>, most Chicagoans get by with a cup, or five, of coffee. With temperatures this summer regularly reaching 90 degrees, it’s definitely iced coffee season. However, if you’re in the <a href="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/category/river-north/" target="_blank">River North area</a>, your options are pretty limited to the usual chains serving overpriced, watered-down brown liquid.</p>
<p>Fortunately, you don’t have to jump in the river to stay cool this summer. Caffè Umbria at 346 N. Clark St. has unveiled a full line of cold summer beverages to help you beat the heat.</p>
<h2>From Italy to Seattle to Chicago</h2>
<div id="attachment_12145" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12145" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-31.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Caffe Umbria packaged coffee" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-31.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-31.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-31.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-31.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Caffè Umbria’s founder Emanuele Bizzarri is a third generation Italian roaster; his grandfather first opened a roastery in Perugia, Italy in the 1940s. When the family migrated to Seattle, Bizzarri introduced classic Italian espresso and coffee to the West Coast with Caffè Umbria. They now have three locations on the West Coast, sell their own coffee blends throughout North American, and most recently opened their first Midwest location in Chicago in late 2015.</p>
<div id="attachment_12142" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12142" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-28.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="interior of Caffe Umbria Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-28.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-28.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-28.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-28.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Formerly a Crumbs Bake Shop, Caffè Umbria is a small coffee shop that’s filled with natural light. Décor is minimal and unpretentious, but classic and sophisticated, which adequately matches their drinks. At Caffè Umbria it’s about the preparation, presentation, and the flavor of the beans, not pumping in a bunch of squirts of mystery juice to boost the flavor.</p>
<div id="attachment_12141" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12141" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-27.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Caffe Umbria counter" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-27.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-27.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-27.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-27.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Though small, they’re well staffed to handle the morning rush or big groups quite quickly. You also find that in comparison to the neighborhood coffee shop you’re afraid to go into because the barista might yell at you, the staff is friendly and welcoming. Some of the drink names may be unfamiliar, but don’t be afraid to ask questions.</p>
<h3>Cold Brew Coffee</h3>
<div id="attachment_12139" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12139" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-25.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Caffe Umbria cold brew coffee system" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-25.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-25.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-25.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-25.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>An iced coffee is coffee that’s brewed hot and then cooled down with a bunch of ice. That process makes it more acidic and bitter, which some people prefer, but also means it’s going to be more watered down and less caffeinated. In contrast, the cold brew coffee at Caffè Umbria is never heated and made using a Yama Tower—a mad scientist-looking device where ice water slowly drips through coffee grounds.</p>
<p>Compared to an iced coffee, what you’re going to drink at Caffè Umbria is sweeter and a little easier on the stomach. The body is incredibly smooth and almost like drinking a fine scotch. There’s none of that graininess that comes with iced coffee and it’s not bitter at all.</p>
<h3>Espresso Shakerato</h3>
<div id="attachment_12129" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12129" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-15.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Espresso Shakerato in Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-15.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-15.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-15.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-15.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>While popular in Italy, an espresso shakerato is virtually unknown in the United States. A very minimal drink, espresso is poured over ice cubes and simple syrup and shaken until cold and a little frothy. The end result is this very flavorful, rich, and refreshing beverage meant for sipping, but I enjoyed it so much that it was gone almost instantly. With the cold temperature, the frothy head, and the thicker body, it almost tastes like drinking a stout.</p>
<p>Just as good as the drink is the presentation. The shakerato is served in a shaker glass with a ring of sugar around the brim. I almost didn’t want to touch it, the shakerato was so attractive.</p>
<h3>Cappuccino Freddo</h3>
<div id="attachment_12132" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12132" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-18.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="cappuccino freddo in Chicago" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-18.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-18.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-18.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-18.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>Even prettier is the cappuccino freddo: cold cappuccino topped with a large layer of milky foam. Tasting like a rich chocolate hazelnut cloud, this Nutella-like beverage is quite decadent, but the creamy lightness of the foam helps to balance it out. This is more like a dessert drink and best paired with a pastry (more on that later).</p>
<h3>Espresso and Grapefruit Granitas</h3>
<div id="attachment_12156" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12156" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Untitled-design-6.jpg?resize=610%2C515" alt="Espresso and Grapefruit Granitas" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>For those days where you really need to cool off, try a granita. These are semi-frozen, sugary, and sweet drinks with a coarser texture that’s icier than an Italian ice, but not as crunchy as a flavored shaved ice. The espresso granita is sweet and strong, while the tartness of the grapefruit granita helps temper the sweetness (the latter is your best bet here if you’re not a coffee fan). Both of which are extremely refreshing drinks and perfect for walking around and exploring Chicago.</p>
<h3>Pastries from Floriole Bakery</h3>
<div id="attachment_12157" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12157" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Untitled-design-7.jpg?resize=610%2C515" alt="Pastries from Floriole Bakery" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>At coffee shops, the pastries and baked goods available are an afterthought; however, for many people, their breakfast is that scone or croissant they buy. Fortunately, Caffè Umbria has found a great partner in <a href="http://www.floriole.com/" target="_blank">Chicago’s Floriole Bakery</a> (1220 W. Webster Ave.).</p>
<p>On the day of my visit, there were typical coffee shop pastries like an almond croissant, along with some more unusual items. There was buckwheat scone made of fine wheat grains topped with jelly, a hot pepper scone, and unique twist on a ham and cheese croissant where a thin layer of ham surrounded by cheese was baked into a croissant topped with sesame seeds. Whether you have a sweet tooth or want a savory breakfast, there should be a pastry for you at Caffè Umbria.</p>
<h2>Bottom Line</h2>
<div id="attachment_12147" style="width: 650px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img class="size-medium wp-image-12147" src="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-33.jpg?resize=610%2C458" alt="Caffe Umbria storefront" srcset="http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-33.jpg?resize=640%2C481 640w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-33.jpg?resize=768%2C577 768w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-33.jpg?resize=1024%2C769 1024w, http://www.thechicagotraveler.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Caffe-Umbria-33.jpg?w=1100 1100w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" data-recalc-dims="1" /><p class="wp-caption-text">James Podrasky</p></div>
<p>For downtown workers, Caffè Umbria is a wonderful alternative to the all of the Starbucks and other coffee chains. It’s easily accessible, they have great drinks, tasty pastries, and there’s a rewards card, too. For anyone visiting our city from out of town or from the suburbs, Caffè Umbria’s location in the heart of the downtown makes it easy to stay cool and alert as you explore the city or casually stroll the Riverwalk. No matter who you are, though, Caffè Umbria is the place to stay cool this summer.</p>

<p><em> </em>Health and well-being company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) will showcase its largest ever list of healthy food items through its signature Humana Healthier Choices program at Taste of Chicago 2016, the world’s largest food festival.</p>
<p>The Humana Healthier Choices – selected by a panel of physicians and nutrition experts based on calories, saturated fat, sodium and ingredients – allow Taste-goers to indulge in the foods they love without stressing over their health and well-being. This year’s Humana Healthier Choices list features 75 healthy food options – the most in the program’s nine-year history – from 29 Chicago restaurants, which represent 40 percent of the total restaurants participating at the year’s festival.</p>
<p>The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in its <a href="https://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015/guidelines/executive-summary/" target="_blank"><em>2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines</em></a>, states that everybody – including companies and organizations – has a role in creating and supporting healthy eating patterns for the communities they serve. For the second year, the Humana Healthier Choices list will include 49 vegetarian options – nearly two-thirds of the list – to cater to a larger sampling of health-conscious attendees. The program will once again promote six gluten-free options from Dia De Los Tamales.</p>

<p>“Taste of Chicago is both a local and national institution, and it is important for Humana to provide attendees the opportunity to eat healthy while still enjoying themselves,” said Neal Fischer, M.D., Humana Regional Medical Director. “Great things are ahead of you when your health is ready for them. The Humana Healthier Choices program shows Taste-goers and the local Chicago community that there are easy ways to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle.”</p>
<p>The Humana Healthier Choices food items will be identified with a new logo for 2016 – a green “H” with a circular arrow around it – that can be found on the menu boards at participating restaurant booths. <p>The personal story of John Falduto, owner and partner of Carbón Live Fire, shows the effect that the Humana Healthier Choices program and its emphasis on healthy living can have on individuals. Carbón will have menu items included in the program for the sixth consecutive year. While participating in a Humana-hosted event at the 2015 Taste of Chicago, Falduto, whose job makes it important for him to continually sample and eat various foods, was inspired by others’ stories of rejuvenated health and weight loss.</p>
<p>“Since I work in the food business, I tend to get very busy, which makes it difficult to prioritize exercise and healthy living,” Falduto said. “I’ve made it a priority over the last year to eat healthier, get to the gym frequently and start hiking again, which has helped me to lose 25 pounds and feel better. The stories of health and well-being at last year’s Taste of Chicago and Humana’s healthy living message have motivated my progress over the past 12 months.”</p>
<p>All restaurants participating in the 2016 Taste of Chicago were invited to submit their menu items for consideration for the Humana Healthier Choices program. For an item to be considered, restaurants must submit nutritional details, including calories, sodium content, saturated fat and the list of ingredients.</p>
