Here in China there is no shortage of Rock in all types, shapes and sizes but that does not stop them, making their own.
Constructing the metal rod and mesh framework takes the most time and planning, the laying on of the cement covering is relatively quick and easy.
The two pictures below show the metal framework and covering.
These next two pictures show a lakeside edge artificial Rockery in Nanning Guangxi China, the line of rocks are all man-made using the process shown above.

Artist impression original drawings above
Yet another large scale Chinese Garden Park area being constructed here in Nanning Guangxi China.
This is one of many landscaping projects taking place in Nanning.
Originally an overgrown unused area with steep sloping sides leading down to a much smaller lake, very much like this area...

And now this has emerged over a period of around 6 months.
A much larger lake with all around planting and access. Formal area and naturalised area.
In the main, created using an unskilled labour force including many women labourers.
This is just one landscaping project, there are also many others taking place in my home city Nanning - Don't forget, there are also many other cities in China developing and this will be a similar story there also.
Employment for thousands. Both in the creation and then in the after maintenance.
And it won't stop there...Chinese Gardens are growing everywhere.

Plants - Carbon footprints - Environment - Aesthetics - Cost - Maintenance - Sustainability

Question: Does it need to be Living? (In the plant sense)
Can paint or coverings be made and serve the same purpose? - Now, or in the Future.

This is an area in Nanning Guangxi China, a road leading onto a bridge - Without doubt, bright and colourful and not, to my mind unattractive.
Added advantages, it's not permanent, theming is easy, ongoing maintenance is minimal.
Question: Is it Landscape?

A place for everything and everything in it's place.
Including potted Bedding plants and Silk Artificial flowers.
When displayed, the outside facing line is placed into a white, sometimes terracotta coloured plastic pot, poly bag and all.
After 3 or 4 weeks, often longer, the plants and the flowers are returned to a Nursery.
The plants given TLC and a liquid feed or two then, probably a week or two later either displayed again or more likely, sold on.
The artificial flowers are used over and over again - then recycled.
The wholesale price of say, a potted marigold is around 1.5 - 2 RMB
Roughly 1 RMB = 10p (10 RMB to the English Pound)
When sold, they will most likely end up at the local market with an initial asking price of perhaps 5 RMB and a final agreed price of around 2 or 3 RMB.
Never missing an opportunity. A quick thinking Chinese local or two have made very good use of a piece of land which is in the process of being cleared for development.
Over the course of a few days the embankment was cleared and planted.
Perhaps only a few months before they need to move out, but for now - Why not grow a few veggies.
Not a vast area but big enough to make a bob or two. Over the road there is a local market where fresh vegetables are sold.
I'm not sure why the Scarecrows are in place as there are no Crows but it is possible a little bird damage might occur.
Or could it be, that from a distance it looks like people are at work and that alone might be enough to stop any pilferage.
The rock probably needs a further few years to weather in. But overall everything is coming along nicely. From one end to another is around an hour at a relaxed walking pace with plenty of interest along the way.
The plan was to introduce all the birds together at the same time in the hope that any particularly dominant birds would be at the same disadvantage as the others.

And it's worked, so far. There is an occasional tussle or two, mainly occurring within the same type of bird but overall nothing too serious.

As for the pond, so far, so good. I have not positioned any roosting perches immediately above the pond, thereby eliminating the risk of contamination by way of the bird droppings.

The planting needed some research which was done online as I knew that some plants are poisonous to some birds.

Plants included.

Lonicera, Ficus, Mentha, Plectranthus, Tradscantia, Lysimachia, Ferns, to name a few, the ones I know but there are others that so far I have been unable to find an English name for, I'm working on it.

To be continued...

After thinking long and hard about it and considering all the difficulties associated with such a Chinese venture, not speaking the language, not knowing or being aware of any suppliers, seeing just how competitive a market placement would be and not least considering the fact that my wife has no experience whatsoever with plants, not the growing of or the selling of, But she was keen as mustard, Oh and finding out that if a unit did become available, which is highly unlikely in this busy market then the 'Key' money, the money one would need to pay the seller would probably be in the region of 80,000 RMB I very quickly decided, NO, its an impossible task.

A few months past and I was still hankering for plants in my life again. We created a roof garden at our apartment in Nanning, which in itself was very nice and pleasurable.

Interestingly, it brought us in touch with Nanning China suppliers of plants, nurseries and the like as too find plants for our garden meant asking around and searching out any establishment that looked like it might be horticultural in some way.

During this time we visited the other Nanning market areas on a regular basis and made a few contacts which to my delight meant we were often invited around for 'Tea', which in turn meant allowing about 3 hours and making room for copious amounts of Chinese Tea but the best bit for me was the opportunity to visit 'Chinese Plant Nurseries' and chat, using my wife as interpreter, with the owners.

It was while we were on one of these invited 'Tea' jaunts that the Nanning Qingxiushan market area was first mentioned.

A few days later my impatience got the better of me, so off we went to have a look.

Photo taken Feb/March 2008. As it was, just before my wife took over in April 08.

September 2007 was our first sight of an area within this market that, at the time was already occupied, but the owner was already thinking about selling the 'Key', that would eventually become my wife's plant centre.

We quickly discovered that at this time, as the market was new and still an unknown quantity, the then present occupier was asking far too much for the 'Key'.

So with this in mind and still considering my earlier decision that to 'do this' would be asking too much... I didn't get too upset with the thought that this would be a 'no go'.

After this first visit we often returned to look around and see how things were progressing, it is a nice area, we made a friend or two of some of the early pioneer shopkeepers there, some are still there to this day…

To be continued...

I knew the summers were hot and wet and the winters cooler, cold and dry.

July was hot humid 32/35 degrees most days with a night time temperature of 20. Some rain, not much but sometimes hard and prolonged.

August was similar with a little more rain, day and night.

September saw more rain, six or seven times a week, day and night and heavy at times. Temperature now fluctuating between 28/35 degrees daytime and the first part of the nights 20. By the morning though a lot cooler, maybe around 15 degrees some days.

October the temperatures were between 25/34 daytime with the evenings cooling down quickly, by morning on some days it really felt quite chilly. A lot less rain and the air becoming noticeably dryer.

November was a lot more windy, sometimes a cool wind and occasional rain, not many times did it rain but when it did, it was heavy. Now the daytime temperatures are down in the mid 20's most days.

December was dry I only think it rained once and not particularly heavy. A lot cooler now, some days around 15 degrees and some nights around 10. But the occasional day the temperature rose to a giddy 25.

It does feel chilly now most days, especially night and morning. Some windy days. Worth noting, this year has been particularly dry by past levels, especially the Autumn/Winter period, so far. I'm learning all the time...
