30 Bales of Marijuana Found Off Los Angeles Coast

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that thirty bales of marijuana, estimated to be worth $500,000, have been found floating off the Southern California coast.

The L.A. County Sheriff's Department says the bales were discovered by a boater six miles from Marina del Rey.

The bales were reportedly fished out of the sea with the help of lifeguards and turned over the the Border Patrol.

Joan Rivers Smokes Pot on TV Show

According to several news outlets and entertainment blogs, 78-year-old comedian and talk show host Joan Rivers straight-up smokes weed on a new episode of her WE reality TV show 'Joan & Melissa', and apparently goes fucking crazy.

According to CelebrityCafe.com the episode includes Rivers obtaining a medical marijuana license, going to a dispensary, then going to her car to smoke out. And that's were things get crazy.

Rivers reportedly started acting like a giggling teenager and demanding to eat "right now". Then she goes home, gets in the hot tub with all of her clothes on and starts drinking tub water out of her shoe.

Man Running from Cops Stuffs 18 Bags of Marijuana in His Mouth

The Bethlehem Patch is reporting that a man in Bethlehem, PA was arrested on domestic violence charges Tuesday and was found by police with 18 separate bags of marijuana stuffed in his mouth.

Noel Pagan, 33, was arrested about a block from his home and was wanted on three different warrants he received for threatening to kill several people.

In addition to the marijuana, Pagan was in possession of $40 and a cell phone. He was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana. Bail was set at $25,000 and he was committed to Northampton County Prison.

'Social Network' Star Busted at Same Checkpoint as Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson

The BBC is reporting that actor Armie Hammer, who played both Winklevoss twins in the film 'The Social Network', was arrested in November for possession of marijuana at a border patrol checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, the same checkpoint that busted Snoop Dogg earlier this month and Willie Nelson last year.

Hammer reportedly spent a night in jail and paid a thousand dollar bond for possessing a small amount of marijuana and an unspecified amount of marijuana-infused cakes, but the El Paso District Attorney decided not to prosecute due to the small amount found.

Four-Year-Old Tries to Share Marijuana During School Snack Time

A four-year-old U.S. boy who announced to his teacher at school snack time that he wanted to share pulled nine bags of marijuana out of his jacket pocket, police said on Wednesday.

Police in Meriden, Connecticut were called to Hanover Elementary School Tuesday afternoon after the young special needs student displayed the drugs, authorities said.

Meriden police said the nine individually wrapped bags of marijuana appeared prepared for sale.

Hanover Elementary School principal Miguel Cardona called it an "extremely unfortunate" and "isolated" incident that was not witnessed by any other students.

"What's so disheartening is this is really an adult issue and problem and adult behavior put a student at risk," Meriden schools superintendent Mark Benigni told Reuters.

"This student had no idea what he brought to school or what the substance was," he added.

Authorities are not releasing the names of the student or parents and police said there is a possibility for arrests pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Department of Children and Families is also looking into the incident.

Marijuana Mouth Spray Seeking FDA Approval

CBS News is reporting that a British Pharmaceutical company called GW Pharma has began clinical trials on a marijuana-based mouth spray that the company hopes will one day used to treat pain in cancer patients.

The medicine, called Sativex, is one of the few pharmaceutical products that is created using real marijuana instead of synthetic compounds. It has already been approved for use in Canada, New Zealand and eight European countries, but would be illegal under U.S. federal drug laws without the approval of the Food and Drug Administration. If approved by the FDA Sativex would be the first drug based on marijuana to be prescribed legally in the U.S.

"There is a real disconnect between what the public seems to be demanding and what the states have pushed for and what the market is providing," said Aron Lichtman, a Virginia Commonwealth University pharmacology professor and president of the International Cannabinoid Research Society. "It seems to me a company with a great deal of vision would say, 'If there is this demand and need, we could develop a drug that will help people and we will make a lot of money.'"

Snoop Dogg Pays $537 Fine for Marijuana Arrest

News agencies are reporting that rapper Snoop Dogg will pay a fine of just $537 after being arrested in Texas earlier this month and being cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Well, the pot-loving musician had to make arrangements with the court in Hudspeth County by Friday and RumorFix has learned exclusively that he's done just that and was fined a whopping $537. (Note the sarcasm) Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr., was cited for having drug paraphernalia -- which is a Class C misdemeanor. The clerk at the Hudspeth County Courthouse tells us that Snoop Dogg, who has a license in California for medical marijuana, didn't appear in court, but made a phone call to make arrangements for payment.

Polish Lawmaker Smokes Pot in Parliment

Janusz Palikot, a Polish lawmaker, officially became one of the coolest politicians in the world today by launching his drive to legalize marijuana by lighting up a fatty on the floor of parliment.

"This is the weed," he told Associated Press reporters in his office in the lower house of parliament, lighting up a large incense joint containing what he said was a legal quantity of marijuana.

Earlier on Friday, the philosophy graduate known for his flamboyant political stunts, caused a stir when he announced he would "light up" in parliament.

"I want to condemn the hypocrisy concerning marijuana consumption," Palikot told reporters. "Someone said they would smoke a joint in parliament and the reaction was tantamount to someone announcing a coup d'etat."

Poland voted in April to soften drug laws by giving prosecutors the power to dismiss small drug possession charges but some say that's not enough and are still calling for full legalization.

Palikot is known in Poland for being one of the more colourful and controversial politicians, famous for his publicity stunts. In April 2007 during a PO press conference, Palikot wore a t-shirt with "I am with the SLD" ("Jestem z SLD") on the front and "I am gay" ("Jestem gejem") on the back. He later stated that he wanted to highlight the role PO should play in contemporary politics - as defenders of minorities.

On 24 April 2007, he produced a gun and a dildo at a press conference about alleged rape by a few police officers from Lublin. Palikot presented the objects as modern "symbols of law and justice" in Poland and the Lublin's police.

On 23 July 2008 Palikot said in an interview "I consider the President to be an oaf" ("Uważam prezydenta za chama"), a potentially illegal act under Poland's anti-defamation laws. An investigation was launched, then dropped.

In October 2008 during a TV interview about the PZPN (Polish Football Association) Palikot produced a butchered pig's head, a Godfather-style sign of declaring war against what Palikot called "corrupt" PZPN officials.

In January 2009 Palikot caused further controversy when he wrote in his blog questioning whether the Polish President's brother, Jarosław Kaczyński, is gay: "I – unasked – declare unequivocally that I prefer women. And you, Mr Jarosław?" As a result Donald Tusk, the leader of Palikot's party, the Civic Platform, launched an investigation into his behaviour.

On 5 July 2010, one day after the second round of the 2010 presidential elections Palikot announced that the late presidentLech Kaczyński "has blood on his hands", blaming Kaczyński for the presidential airplane crash in Smolensk.

Cops Find Pot, Gun in Box of Cheerios

The Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, South Carolina is reporting that police found 25 bags of marijuana and a handgun in a box of Cheerios cereal after making a traffic stop in north Charleston Thursday.

Police say they pulled over Mariah Dowling, 19, for driving 50 mph in a 30 mph zone and searched her vehicle after she told them that her passenger had a bag of marijuana. They found a scale, baggies and a ski mask along with the 38 grams of pot in 25 different bags and a loaded .25 caliber pistol.

Dowling, who was wanted on a shoplifting charge, was charged with illegally possessing a handgun and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Feds Warn Colorado Dispensaries, Raid San Diego Dispensaries

Federal Prosecutors announced today that they would begin a crackdown on the medical marijuana industry in Colorado and sent letters to 23 dispensaries that are located near schools and warned them that they would have to close within 45 days or face prosecution and seizure of their property.

"When the voters of Colorado passed the limited medical marijuana amendment in 2000, they could not have anticipated that their vote would be used to justify large marijuana stores located within blocks of our schools," Colorado U.S. Attorney John Walsh said in a statement announcing the crackdown.

It's also being reported that three medical marijuana dispensaries in the San Diego area were raided today, one on University Ave. and one in Pacific Beach.

Eyewitnesses say that patients at the collective were held and questioned for 40 minutes before being released and employees were interrogated for hours.

California Legislature to Vote on Medical Marijuana Laws

Cannabis Culture Magazine has a feature story on two pieces of legislature poised for a vote some time this month that would affect the state's million plus medical cannabis users.

The two bills, which must be voted on this month, are SB129 (Leno) which would grant employment rights to medical marijuana users, and AB1017 (Ammiano) which would reduce penalties for marijuana cultivation.

The vote on SB129 will happen before January 20, possibly the week of January 16. Californians are urged to write their state senator today in support of this bill.

AB1017 will be voted on before January 27. Californians are asked to urge their state assembly member to support AB 1017.

Italian School: Cannabis 'Amazing Ingredient' for Cooking

The Web site UPI.com is reporting that officials at the Italian Flavor University in Perugia, Italy have recommended Cannabis Sativa as an "amazing ingredient" for cooking.

Apparently the school has claimed that Cannabis Sativa only has 'trace amounts' of THC and doesn't get you high, possibly confusing it with Industrial Hemp, which is something completely different.

The school said hemp has a taste similar to hazelnut and is most commonly used in the form of flour, but the leaves, seeds and oil can also be used to "add a twist" to recipes.

Study: Pot Smoking Doesn't Hurt, May Even Help Lung Function

Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn’t harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn’t do the kind of damage tobacco does.

The results, from one of the largest and longest studies on the health effects of marijuana, are hazier for heavy users — those who smoke two or more joints daily for several years. The data suggest that using marijuana that often might cause a decline in lung function, but there weren’t enough heavy users among the 5,000 young adults in the study to draw firm conclusions.

Still, the authors recommended “caution and moderation when marijuana use is considered.”

Marijuana is an illegal drug under federal law although some states allow its use for medical purposes.

The study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham was released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The findings echo results in some smaller studies that showed while marijuana contains some of the same toxic chemicals as tobacco, it does not carry the same risks for lung disease.

It’s not clear why that is so, but it’s possible that the main active ingredient in marijuana, a chemical known as THC, makes the difference. THC causes the “high” that users feel. It also helps fight inflammation and may counteract the effects of more irritating chemicals in the drug, said Dr. Donald Tashkin, a marijuana researcher and an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Tashkin was not involved in the new study.

Study co-author Dr. Stefan Kertesz said there are other aspects of marijuana that may help explain the results.

Unlike cigarette smokers, marijuana users tend to breathe in deeply when they inhale a joint, which some researchers think might strengthen lung tissue. But the common lung function tests used in the study require the same kind of deep breathing that marijuana smokers are used to, so their good test results might partly reflect lots of practice, said Kertesz, a drug abuse researcher and preventive medicine specialist at the Alabama university.

The study authors analyzed data from participants in a 20-year federally funded health study in young adults that began in 1985. Their analysis was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

The study randomly enrolled 5,115 men and women aged 18 through 30 in four cities: Birmingham, Chicago, Oakland, Calif., and Minneapolis. Roughly equal numbers of blacks and whites took part, but no other minorities. Participants were periodically asked about recent marijuana or cigarette use and had several lung function tests during the study.

Overall, about 37 percent reported at least occasional marijuana use, and most users also reported having smoked cigarettes; 17 percent of participants said they’d smoked cigarettes but not marijuana. Those results are similar to national estimates.

On average, cigarette users smoked about 9 cigarettes daily, while average marijuana use was only a joint or two a few times a month — typical for U.S. marijuana users, Kertesz said.

The authors calculated the effects of tobacco and marijuana separately, both in people who used only one or the other, and in people who used both. They also considered other factors that could influence lung function, including air pollution in cities studied.

The analyses showed pot didn’t appear to harm lung function, but cigarettes did. Cigarette smokers’ test scores worsened steadily during the study. Smoking marijuana as often as one joint daily for seven years, or one joint weekly for 20 years was not linked with worse scores. Very few study participants smoked more often than that.

Like cigarette smokers, marijuana users can develop throat irritation and coughs, but the study didn’t focus on those. It also didn’t examine lung cancer, but other studies haven’t found any definitive link between marijuana use and cancer.

Snoop Dogg Arrested for Marijuana Possession in Texas

Rapper Snoop Dogg was reportedly arrested in Texas over the weekend after drug sniffing dogs detected marijuana on his tour bus, according to the Web site TMZ.com.

Snoop was busted at a border patrol checkpoint near Sierra Blanca, Texas, the same place Willie Nelson was busted in 2010 when marijuana was found on his tour bus.

The Border Patrol reported finding less than half an ounce of pot in a red medicine bottle on Snoop Dogg's bus. While Snoop Dogg does hold a Medical Marijuana recommendation in the state California, the license is not recognized by authorities in Texas, which doesn't have a medical marijuana law.

If convicted Snoop Dogg could be facing up to six months in county jail. This will be Snoop Dogg's fifth time getting arrested for possession of marijuana.

'Blair Witch' Actress Talks About Her New Life Growing Marijuana

Actress Heather Donahue, who starred in the 1999 faux documentary horror sensation 'The Blair Witch Project' has released a new book detailing her journey from movie star to marijuana farmer.

I the book, titled 'Grow girl: How My Life after 'The Blair Witch Project Went to Pot', Donahue tells about how she gave up acting after a decade of trying to recreate her early success and moved to northern California with a new boyfriend to learn how to grow pot.

In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Donahue talked about the challenges of growing fine marijuana:

"That's the other thing I learned from it. No matter what you think you know every time is different. Every round with the plants is different. There are no closed environments. The world was always getting into the room. As much as an indoor grow room is about controlling the environment, I learned over and over again that I had no control. Spider mites somehow got in or powdery mildew would show up. You have to deal with these situations as they arise. It taught me to be really comfortable with flux," she said.

Smugglers Use Catapult to Fling Marijuana Over Border Fence

Mexican soldiers have seized two catapults that were being used by drug smugglers to fling packages of marijuana across the border with the US into Arizona.

A military statement today says an anonymous tip led troops to a house in the border city of Agua Prieta where they found a catapult in the bed of a pickup truck and another inside the house.

It says soldiers also seized 1.3 tons of marijuana during Monday's raid in Agua Prieta, which is across the border from Douglas, Arizona.

Mexican troops also seized two catapults in the area last January. Authorities said then that it was the first time they had seen this smuggling method used by local traffickers.

White House Responds to Marijuana Legalization Petition

The White House has finally issued a response to a petition created on a White House web site called 'We the People' that gathered more than 70,000 signatures in support of marijuana legalization.

The response was written by a former police chief named Gil Kerlikowske and it reads:

When the President took office, he directed all of his policymakers to develop policies based on science and research, not ideology or politics. So our concern about marijuana is based on what the science tells us about the drug's effects.

According to scientists at the National Institutes of Health- the world's largest source of drug abuse research - marijuana use is associated with addiction, respiratory disease, and cognitive impairment. We know from an array of treatment admission information and Federal data that marijuana use is a significant source for voluntary drug treatment admissions and visits to emergency rooms. Studies also reveal that marijuana potency has almost tripled over the past 20 years, raising serious concerns about what this means for public health – especially among young people who use the drug because research shows their brains continue to develop well into their 20's. Simply put, it is not a benign drug.

Like many, we are interested in the potential marijuana may have in providing relief to individuals diagnosed with certain serious illnesses. That is why we ardently support ongoing research into determining what components of the marijuana plant can be used as medicine. To date, however, neither the FDA nor the Institute of Medicine have found smoked marijuana to meet the modern standard for safe or effective medicine for any condition.

As a former police chief, I recognize we are not going to arrest our way out of the problem. We also recognize that legalizing marijuana would not provide the answer to any of the health, social, youth education, criminal justice, and community quality of life challenges associated with drug use.

That is why the President's National Drug Control Strategy is balanced and comprehensive, emphasizing prevention and treatment while at the same time supporting innovative law enforcement efforts that protect public safety and disrupt the supply of drugs entering our communities. We're also focused on expanding access to drug treatment for addicts. Treatment works. In fact, millions of Americans are in successful recovery for drug and alcoholism today. New Indie Movie Features Pothead Zombie Killers

A new feature film by Mind in Motion Inc. called 'Bong of the Dead' features two pothead characters who set out on a road trip to collect zombie brains to use as fertilizer in their weed plants.

The film is the creation of first-time filmmaker Thomas Newman who spent just $5,000 and used mostly family and friends for his cast and crew to film what he calls his 'masterpiece calling card film'.

Right-Wing Filmmaker Trying to Discredit Occupy Wall Street with Bongs and Rolling Papers?

For some reason, independant filmmaker Evan Coyne Maloney, whose been called the conservative answer to Michael Moore, has been walking around the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York with his film crew handing out bongs and rolling papers.

Some have suggested that the filmmaker is trying to cast the protesters in a negative light by casting them as "hippie potheads".

The video below shows Maloney in heated discussion with several with several of the protester, but around the 4:40 mark someone directly confronts him about the paraphernalia and asks why he isn't handing out food and blankets instead.

Although one protester claims Maloney is trying to "create a visual" for Fox News, Maloney claims he was giving the items away because he's a "nice guy".
