Okay this worked so much better in my head.

Hm. Well I've reformatted it a little and I've added Azizi's, Fiona's, Wei Li's and Sarah's thingies in, but really, apart from you guys, is there anyone else who still comes to this blog? I posted a message on the 5 Lily facebook page but I doubt anyone saw it, so I'm thinking whoever knows anything about whomever should just go ahead and write down whatever you know. Like stuff gleaned from facebook snooping, reunions, whatever. What I’ve done (on this Friday night when I should be doing research) is pick stuff off facebook pages, but it’s all very scant so I was thinking maybe we could send out a mass email via facebook to 5 Lily girls telling them to provide details etc.? What do you think? FEEDBACK S'IL VOUS PLAIT. Also, feel free to edit anything...I think what might work is highlighting everything in this post and then pasting it onto Word and fixing it there. Blogger is being a BITCH and will not let cut and paste function normally.

So the other day in my graduate seminar I learnt a new word: PROSOPOGRAPHY. And rather than try to concoct a personally-worded definition for it I will plagiarize from the OED:

prosopography, n.

1. The description of the form or personal appearance of an individual; an instance of this. Now rare.

2. A study or description of an individual's life, career, etc.; esp. a collection of such studies focusing on the public careers and relationships of a group in a particular place and period; a collective biography. As a mass noun: the study of such descriptions, esp. as an aspect of classical history; such studies or histories as a genre.

Right. So the definition we should be interested in is #2, the pertinent part of which I have made bold. A collective biography of 5 Lily 2005. Spanning, of course, the years after we left high school. Because we've all been scattered like flotsam and jetsam and although we've all got a vague idea of who's doing what and where the key word in the last clause of my sentence was vague; that is to say, there is no faithful documentation of what everyone in 5 Lily has been doing since high school.

So what I propose is this: a prosopography of 5 Lily, Class of 2005. Tracing, namely, one's current location, one's current career, and, possibly, one's current marital status. And I'm hoping you guys can help fill this out because frankly speaking I'm a flotsam that's floated off pretty far and I've only really kept in touch with less than a handful of people.

I thought it would be a really good time for us to do this now because a lot of us are graduating, a few of us are getting jobs, etc., whatever. We're moving into another stage of life. So...pourquoi pas?

Now, the logistics of this: hm. I don't think any of you can edit my post, so maybe you should copy the table below from my published post, then paste it onto a new post, fill it up with whatever you want, whatever you know, then re-post the table. That's the only way I see it working. I've filled up my slot and taken the liberty of filling up Syazlin's, and I could fill up some others, but I figure I'll leave that to you guys, because I haven't really kept in touch with anyone else. I hope this works! And lemme know what you guys think. And feel free to add a column or whatever you want to the table, or correct anything: I tried very hard to remember everybody (I had to look at an old class photo) and I hope I haven't forgotten anybody, but I've forgotten a few last names, possibly misspelled a few first names. It's a collective biography, but also a collective work, so allons-y!

The class of 2005. It has been 5 years. I bet some of them have entirely forgotten about this blog. My being here proves that I have not forgotten. Just being lazy as always. Updating blogs has never been easy for me.

I have another two more semesters and then I'm off to training next year January (most probably in Penang). I can't wait to get out of college. Life is pretty miserable there, for me at least. I know I should be grateful that I am still in the comfort of my home but the grass is always greener on the other side, no? So yeah, can't wait to get independent and become a workaholic. Going insane because of assignments. Glad it's almost done right now.

I miss all of you! We should have a reunion when everyone is back home.

Yup, 2010's really amazing Sarah. Happening.

These few weeks, I'm being drowned in club activities, class responsibilities, training, lectures on diseases, surgeries, homework & assignments etc.

I found out I'm to be posted to the largest/busiest/understaffed ward for 7 weeks starting April right after tests. More procedures to be achieved. Then there's OSCE/practical exam after those grueling 7 weeks.

Until the end of the year, there's only 1 holiday week - the Hari Raya break.

Sighs.

Welcome to 2nd year, where people struggle to maintain/up their GPA and sanity.

Crikey.

On a lighter note, I started to serve in street & worship ministry for my church here. A positive start :).

Btw, how's everyone else? =) I pray all is well ^^

Updates:
Been back in Dublin 5 weeks or so now. Already losing my tan.
Found a new place and moved. Been here for almost 2 weeks now. 2 roomed apartment. Pretty comfortable.
Lectures started. Trying to adjust to absorbing info again.

Been posting for the past 12 days straight in the ward. Definitely learnt a lot throughout these days, but the ward sister shouldn't have scheduled my shifts like this:-
Week 1: Sunday off, Monday - Saturday work.
Week 2: Sunday - Friday work, Saturday off.

My ankles were swollen yesterday, couldn't walk much, except to the cafeteria for dinner. Sigh.

i just happened to notice that yikuan's entry was the 100th post here. =)
and i guess updates here come in batches, no?

for myself, it's now the last day of my easter/spring break. went to holland and belgium for 12 days. pictures are on facebook. i definitely had fun and experienced lots of 'firsts' on this trip, but it wasn't quite as exciting as going around UK. can't quite put that into words. =P

and, of course, the exams. in 5 weeks. and then i'll get a 14 weeks long break. but no, i don't think i'll be going home. probably travel, and get a part time job, or possibly while away the time reading non-medical stuff and watching movies, as no medical student during term time can. haha.

a short bit of news i got from my sister today (might be 'old-s' for some of you), pn maimunah is currently in paris. went with her husband who is now working there. i haven't yet gotten her email address, but i guess anyone planning to go to paris can look her up or something. =D

Since Sarah asked for an update, I shall write a few words to appease her. Haha!!

A short update about what I am up to these days:

Will be facing finals in one week's time
Assignments piling up. Total number of words must be a minimum of 4k each. (I have four waiting to annihilate me so the grand total is 16k of words! I am feeling queezy at the thought of it.)
Haven't started on revision for finals. Planning to repent and will definitely start tomorrow.
What else?

Too tired to think of more now. Gotta go catch my beauty sleep (I know it won't help much in beauty starting my sleep at this hour) at this time as I am heading off to north (Penang!!) tomorrow.

Sarah, I feel inclined to read the girl's blog too.

Updates about me, you all know already ler.. Studying still.

And am trying to find back my nerdy personality. I have a feeling that I've lost the "kerajinan" I used to have. :P

I missed being in the noisiest class with the most outstandingly variable students. I think everyone of you 5 Lilians were total wacko and at some point, EXOTIC. Brought out the best of me, you people did. :) Grateful to have friends such as you!

Over here aite, it's so funny la, cause I was the prefect last time, so freaking fierce and strict and bla bla bla. (Sorry for the many dimerits that have made some of you suffer detention duty)

However, now, amongst my fellow friends, I'm the one who talks too much, play too much, sleep too much, very stubborn etc. (If they give dimerits everytime I show "inappropriate" behaviour of a soon-to-be-20-years-old, for sure I have sufficient amount to last me a lifetime detention duty :P)
I secretly hope that there are friends as "high" as you guys are though. Then, we could share laughter everytime we do silly little things. :D

Owh ya, I'm sure you all know more about this than I. How do we stop gossip ya? You all know la, I never got myself involved with guys, never go tuition some more. Haih. Give me headaches only~

well, just for the sake of being able to have an excuse to waste more time, thought i'd peep in and scribble something.

i've been in ireland 3 weeks now. it's getting colder everyday. stepping out of the shower is becoming very daunting. am no longer falling asleep in lectures, but still drifting away most of the time.

what am i to do? cardsigning is following friday. 4 weeks of anatomy to be tested. oh no!

and i seem to want food all the time! now i know why people put on weight when they go overseas, especially when it becomes this cold. and it's not even the coldest months yet. brrr...

Hey all,

after all that ranting about my future here the last time, i've finally got some good news.

last wednesday, i got a call from jpa. attended a pre-departure briefing on friday and then a pre-departure orientation by pmc on sunday.
attending rcsi in dublin. will be leaving either on the 25th or 28th september. have got about a month left in malaysia.

have got quite a lot to do right now. though at times i can't really say for sure. there's definitely going to be a long long cycle of packing-weighing-repacking-reweighing etc...that's gonna be a headache. we were told that we were only allowed 20kg for check-in luggage. and 5 more for hand luggage. gonna be tough.

thank you all so much for all the words of encouragement and also your prayers. =D

maybe some of you can come visit me sometime soon..eheh.

Hey everyone,

Will anyone still be in Ipoh around the second week of August? I'll only be coming back around then and it would be really awesome to see you guys again.

Wei Li, my sister said you came to help out in the Taylors debate thing? I think they told you they won. I went to watch them. I must say they're as good as my team was, and even funnier actually. The quarter finals are this coming Thursday and I'll be going to watch them again.

Oh and Sarah, James McAvoy was totally delicious in Atonement. Did you catch that? Especially that bit where he grins and looks away when Keira Knightley snaps at him for breaking the vase near the fountain.

okay..i didn't think anyone would expect to see a post from me..
and honestly, i never thought of posting one here until now..
maybe..just maybe it was because i feel too inferior compared with you girls..

but here i am..in hopes of someone noticing me..the tiny me XD

my thoughts are not that entirely organized now so it doesn't matter if you don't find a link in anything i'm trying to say here..

anyway, jac..now that explains why i get to see you only once in monash and that's it..
and yeah i wasn't too fond of australia too..but i just wanted to experience how things would be abroad and also the four seasons thing..
but of course, i gave up the offer (due to several personal reasons) and now i'm stuck in malaysia!!

i realized it was kind of stupid of me..oh and about NS..haha..maybe we should see who could evade it the longest..until they abolish the system (kinda impossible)

i didn't change much since 2005..
maybe a little..considering that i've become more of a quiet person (never chat much in msn anymore) which in turn results in a a lesser amount of friends..

it's hard for me to make new friends in uni now..

maybe it was just the difference between the systems in taylor's and monash..
when i was doing SAM in taylor's, they grouped and put us in a fixed class..just the same as in high school..

the only person in 5 lily that i've been seeing a lot is bee khin..since we're in the same uni and all..
and i saw one of the twins in parade during the 1st week of june..
sorry i can't differentiate whether it was yim leng or wai leng..

i am envious of you ppl since prolly most of you have figured out what you wanted to do etc..
and right here, i am still confused..still trying to grasp some invisible thing..
now, i'm majoring in economics and finance in monash..
and that is not what i really wanted to do..
what i really want is maybe something to do with animation, graphic..etc..
so the biggest obstable is that.. I COUDN'T DRAW!
now this is both hilarious and ironic..

since i did not accept the offer to transfer to australia, i think i'll just see what i can make out of my uni life in malaysia..

some time ago, chee ching and i had a plan of working in some company in japan..she in the advertising department and me in finance department..

Yes but where you go DOES matter and where you end up does to a large degree depend on where you WENT in the first place. Don't point out anomalies like Bill Gates whatnot because those are one in billions. For the ordinary people like us it matters incredibly which university you go to because ultimately its the place that forms you and your thoughts. If for example you went to Harvard medical school the chances of you getting a higher pay at a more prestigious hospital or whatever would be way higher than you having attended med school in say, Indonesia or wherever. There's a difference between going to university in a developed country and going to a university in a developing country. Why else do you think people choose to go abroad to study and especially to developed countries? Why do you think universities like Harvard and Oxford have that amount of prestige? Because it matters where you come from. Superficial, certainly, but no less real. If you want to rise above what you are, if you want to better yourself, you've got to aim higher than yourself. So do not snipe at me for taking it hard that I didn't get in anywhere I wanted to go.

P.S. No one gets into Oxbridge for medicine. There are only 20 seats for international applicants worldwide. It's an entirely different case for someone who applied to read English.

A Much Delayed Update

Hello everyone!

Yes, reprove me for my absence, my negligence, my terrible inability to remember names, faces, birthdays...

It's only because Sarah found me on facebook the other day that I've been spurred to reconnect with the 5 lilians; I went on a friend-adding spree and decided, finally, to take up NJ's long-standing invitation to contribute my babble to this blog.

Funny how time flies. It's been three years! Aside from meeting up once with Fi, and another time with Sarah, and a few times with Puiyun; aside from bumping into Weili once at the communal watering hole in ipoh - otherwsie more familiarly known as JUSCO; aside from a few messages from Syaz imploring that we meet up sometime (she's currently in kl now, not very sure where) - no, I haven't kept in touch with anybody. Not out of any desire to forget, but simply because I'm not great at keeping in touch. So after this post you'll probably hear from me after, like, another three years, haha.

Anyway I'll just briefly sketch what I've been up to - in bullet points no less, because I'm determined to stick to the point and not ramble:

I was in Penang doing the International Baccalaureate Program from Jan. 2006 - June 2007. I managed to evade National Service while at it; perhaps one day you will see my face in the papers - THIRTY YEAR OLD TO DO NATIONAL SERVICE AFTER EVASION OF TWELVE YEARS. Or some nightmare like that. But anyway, on to the next bullet point.

During my stint in Penang, I applied to colleges in the United States, hoping that, with acceptance from one if not few of them, I would be able to leave this shambling country for the glorious, bountiful land of fast food, fat people and free speech. In short, I wanted to live my American dream. And being the ambitious fool that I was, I applied to three Ivy Leagues and three top-ranking liberal arts colleges. When the decision letters came flooding back in during May 2007 I was waitlisted EVERY-FREAKING-WHERE. Before, of course, finally being rejected. I have a hunch it was something to do with my SAT II scores. I mean, Harvard WAITLISTED me, so I couldn't have been that bad; but then again, I digress. Next point.

After my sorrowful rejection, my father decided that I should further pursue my studies in this horrible city of Kuala Lumpur. I enrolled myself in the newly built campus of Monash University in Sunway, supposedly double-majoring in Writing and International Studies. But I never had desires to go to Australia. The land, the people there, generate feelings of revolt in me. I do not care for grey vegetarian mini-bears nor gurgling elongated pipes, nor for the natives who speak with a corrupt version of the English accent. Granted, I was given a full scholarship there as well, but I just wasn't happy; I had no friends, I was immensely depressed, and I skipped classes aplenty, preferring to employ my time working as a barista at Starbucks. The thing is, I had all these expectations, I had planned my life; I was to go to an Ivy League school, I was to get a good job somewhere, I was to rise up above my humble roots in Ipoh. But then everything was thwarted and...well I could mull on forever about this but to move on:

Eventually I just decided to quit Monash and enroll instead in Taylor's American Degree Transfer Program. Approximately one and a half years here in Subang, and another two years in the States, wherever I choose to go (or rather, wherever that accepts me).

And that's where I am now. I live in a hostel apartment with an Indonesian roommate - who's quite friendly, really, we go to gym together, it's disgusting how much weight I've put on, I eat tons when I'm depressed; I go to a college which consists of one floor in an office building - a far cry from the ivy-entwined walls of Harvard, I'm sure; and I'm still going out with the same person I was two and a half years ago - the second speaker of the opposing team during the Rotary debate finals, if anyone really still remembers. I go back to Ipoh from time to time, but as little as possible, really. And I don't really write anymore; it's like I've lost my voice. But everything's alright here, if not exactly wonderful.

This is it for now I suppose. A much delayed update on my life for the past three years. What's this about a reunion?

I am tired yet excited. Will be tasting some alcohol tomorrow. Can't wait to make some real cocktail! I hope I can bring back some for you people to try.
