Repairing Your Child

There is something deeply sinister about a young woman's teenage years. It seems that their fickleness, jealously and lack of good sense takes over at a certain age and leaves us parents waiting to pick up the inevitable pieces.

With my daughter, I had to sit and watch for 3 years as she pranced around our house in flimsy clothing, talking cheekily on her mobile about the other girls in her year 10 class and applying more black eyeliner than was sensible.

At one point, I knew Sarah was probably experimenting with drugs. One evening, I found a packet of rolling papers and a lighter in her purse. I didn't bother to confront her about it. She was hard-headed at that time and I knew that an open fight about it would only end in her sleeping at a friend's house for a week. And, I had attended High School, hadn't I? I'd enjoyed a few 'joints' occasionally, how hypocritical would it have been for me to get angry with her? Instead, my husband and I sat her and my teenage son down and talked to them about drugs, and were very open about it. We were the cool-as-a-cucumber parents and it seemed to be working.

In our house, there are no closed doors, no hypocrisy, no yelling, no violence and our children know that they can tell us anything. I knew that my daughter was going down a dangerous path, but at least she knew that she could talk to me without worrying about any form of repercussion.

To me, these were all issues that parents go through with their children. My oldest went through a rough patch, but is now attending University and has her life on a good track. In fact, so does Sarah. But unlike my oldest, Sarah had to learn her lessons the cruel, unusual and unnatural way. Sarah was posted on thedirty.com.

The things that were said about my child were not only infuriating, but sickening as well. The feelings that I felt that moment went much farther than merely hopeless, helpless or raging. The night that Sarah showed me thedirty.com, I saw red.

How horrible of this man to take away my child's Right to fuck up! As teenagers, we had the freedom to live and learn without worrying about our reputations being permanently tarnished. Back in the day it was only the newspapers that carried smut and scandal, but then peddlers of pain like Nik Richie decided to line their pockets by using the internet to spread rumours and gossip without so much as a thought for those who are being hurt.

When it comes down to it, humans make mistakes. I do. You do. Why should my daughter's mistakes be fodder for strangers? What right does he or anyone else have to castigate my little girl?

Thankfully, through no small amount of effort, we put Sarah back together again. But it wasn't easy.

I wrote in to thedirty.com requesting a removal about twenty times, begging and bartering, and received no response. Meanwhile, my daughter was feeling the flack in her classes (Let me tell you, having your 16 year old come home crying because someone called her a "bottle-rat/super-slut, is not a fun afternoon). The effects of the post only got worse until finally, I pulled Sarah out of her year 10 classes and moved her to another school in a different neighbourhood. It was a positive start.

My daughter knew that if she wanted to spring back from this, she had to repair her reputation. When she turns 19, Sarah will change her last name so that prospective employers can't find her name through a Google search when doing a background check.

Because Sarah had been so shell-shocked from seeing her biggest mistakes (including a few that she didn't even make) posted for the world to see, she watched herself and cleaned up her act. For the last two years of her High School career, Sarah kept her head down and only made friends that she knew she could trust.

My baby girl, fortunately, is now happy again. My only fear now, is that other mothers won't be so lucky.

This month, our blog has made over £4.30 on advertising! Quite honestly, we're having trouble closing our wallet, it's so stuffed. It's such a nice round number too, "four pounds, thirty pence." It's so robust, so chic, so glamorous. Think of what we could buy: A lipstick, a packet of candy, a pint of lager...

Kidding.

As we've mentioned before, we plan to donate whatever money we make on advertising to the Charity of our readers' choice. This website costs us nothing more than a bit of our time, and we believe that it would take away from the purity of our intentions to pocket the funds that we earn.

Obviously, with our growing readership, we will be earning a bit more than £5 very soon. So, now it is time for our readers to nominate charities for our consideration.

We need you to decide what Charities you think are helping your communities the most, and send us your nominations. We're looking for strong, reputable charities that you think are doing a top-notch job.

We can do this.

We can do it, but we need more information. We're starting to see some serious interest from the right people, but without proof, without cases, without the public outcry, we've got no leverage.

I've shown a few people some of the anonymous emails from victims of thedirty.com and not only were the mortified, they were as angry as we are. This is a very positive step.

This is the way we affect change in our world.

Gay rights, women's liberation, racial equality - none of it happened without members of the public standing up and saying, "We're mad as hell, and we're not going to take it anymore!" Bills are only passed, changes are only made when the public demands it.

I know that thedirty.com has a following, so does the Ku Klux Klan. But the evidence shows that the general public is vehemently opposed to what thedirty.com stands for.

"She Loves The Attention!"

Well, you may be right. It's quite easy to stereo-type a person. We see a young woman posting racy photos of herself on a website and quickly jump to conclusions. Generally, we can take a glance at any given person and have all the information we'll ever need. What do we call these women?

We call them Sluts.

But what if a woman really just wanted to have some sexy photos taken of herself? What if she woke up and just wanted to feel beautiful and important for a day? What if she wanted share the saucy snaps with the people that she thought were her friends? What if she sees the superficial flaws in her body and wants to feel better about them? Yes, she asked for attention, but I doubt she asked to be verbally ripped apart on a diabolical, satirical website.

There are some down this road, that do like the attention, and I don't see that there is anything wrong with that. There are a few so-called "Dirty Celebs", that actually say they enjoy being posted on the website. I personally think that The Dirty should not be shut down, but kept running for some of the more useful purposes such as outing immoral businesses (not their owners) and posting about what the "Dirty Celebs" are up to. I concede that less people would visit the website which would mean a change in lifestyle for Nik Richie. For some reason, I'm not all that convinced that he'd be willing to consider it.

Over the past few weeks, I've witnessed first-hand what The Dirty does to people's lives. The most recent email I've received was from a woman whose photos were posted along with a few comments about her needing to realize that she was ugly and had bad skin. Could someone please take a moment to explain to me, how that was constructive? I understand that it may have been entertaining to the bored citizens of North America, but it sure wasn't entertaining to her or the people that love her. This woman has spent the last two years begging for her post to be removed. So no, she doesn't love the attention.

What gets me the most is that Nik actually defends his website. It would be one thing if he called it "www.ruinpeopleslivesandenjoyit.org" and was honest about it. But, he's deluded himself and his "Dirty Army" members into thinking that he's actually cleaning up the world. Why did the world need to be warned about the young woman I mentioned? Was she terrorizing the city with her blotchy skin?

The 46th Hop

Hey-

It's 1:30am where I am, and I'm sitting on my sofa, eating my boyfriend's emergency kit-kat and I've begun to think about all of the embarrassing things that I've done in my twenty-some years of being alive. To be honest, I've got quite a long list.

This one time when I was about five, my mom's new boyfriend was introducing her to his parents for the first time, and she decided to bring me along. On the way, she explained that this was a very important day and that I had to be on my best behaviour.

During the very formal sit down in their family room, I decided that I wanted to show off some form of skill to impress the family. My only to skill to name of at the tender age of five, was my impeccable ability to hop on one foot. So I announced, "Hey everyone, look! I've been practicing since I was four." And so it began. I hopped, counting my hops out loud along the way, and they watched, counting the hops with me. They were quite impressed, I might mention. I was already up to 37 hops. But who was to know that something awful would occur during my hopping performance? Indeed, something very regrettable happened.

On my 46th hop, my life as I knew it ended. With number 46, came the most tragic occurrence that I could have ever imagined. Hop number 46 has haunted me for twenty-some years. As my left foot landed on the 14th of May, in a stranger's front sitting room, on my 46th hop, I farted.

It wasn't a stinky fart, but it was a loud one.

The room when hush as my cheeks went red, and I bolted out of the room and refused to come back in for the rest of my days.

My mother had a particularly annoying way of making sure that there was a camera or camcorder wherever I existed when I was growing up. Thankfully, on that day there wasn't one.

We all lay in bed at night and wince at the painfully embarrassing things that we've done. Would you have liked those moments filmed or documented?

But what about the real mistakes? The more than embarrassing ones that you take 4 shots of whiskey to try to forget? Now imagine that mistake was posted on The Dirty.

If someone told the world about my 46th hop, I would be mortified, but I'd get over it. If someone told the world my darkest secret, I'd die inside.

Something to think about I guess.

One of my team members just mentioned something to me that I thought was quite interesting. The conversation went something like this:

Me: "Why do they keep deleting us from Twitter and Facebook? They don't delete the trolls, the racists, the people that hate The Dirty or the angry victims but they delete us, over and over again? I don't get it!"

Abbey: "It's because they know we're right."

Hmmm. Food for thought.

When will they go too far?

We've already seen a few shockingly boundless posts on The Dirty. We know that many of the posts are about completely innocent people that were seemingly going about their daily lives. In fact, some of the people didn't even know the photos were being taken of them.

An American sportscaster named Erin Andrews was filmed through a hotel peephole in July 2009 by a man named Michael David Barrett, who was later caught and sentenced to 30 months in prison for stalking Ms. Andrews. But before he was caught, he sent the video to The Dirty.

Andrew's lawyers sent an email to Nik Richie asking him to take down the video and photos. Nik not only refused, but he also reposted the photo's with an added personal message.

"Erin Andrews, can you ask your lawyers if this is the post they want me to take down because I am confused?”.

To this day, the photos and video are still very available.

It's apparent that our privacy Rights are carelessly being compromised at The Dirty. It is happening anonymously and with no possible way of punishing the thousands of offenders. So far, because of his CDA immunity, Nik is not held responsible for the comments or posts that are submitted.

But when will it all go too far?

If for example, a couple from Ohio wanted to have a wild orgy in their barn at 2am on a Sunday morning, it is their Right to do so without the threat of the public's knowledge and their inevitable subsequent opinions. If that couple were on the front page of the town newspaper the next morning, it would be a gross invasion of privacy.

There is a reason that we have laws, a justice system, privacy rights and curtains.

One of the ideals that Nik Richie uses to defend the website is that it is holding people accountable for their actions. He says that justice is served because people need to know if a person is malicious in nature. When it comes to criminals being outed, the justice system is there for a reason and it is not up to Nik Richie to be a vigilante.

I do believe that the media provides information that is of public interest and that is very important, but that is not what The Dirty has become. Consider a politician that has had three DUI's. That particular story is of public interest because the citizens need to know about the nature of that person. Some of the people posted on thedirty.com are legitimate stories at the very least but if they are news stories, the website should be treated as a news website and should be held to the same standards of expectations.

What about the 16 year old girl with the ill-advised spray tan or the 24 year old man that had a nasty break-up with a vindictive ex-girlfriend? What justice did those posts serve? Why were those stories of public interest? While trying to help the few, The Dirty has hurt many. And it was not their right to do so.

What's more, I personally do not believe that Nik has put this website together with a clean conscience. I think that he is a marketing genius and he knows what drives traffic to a website. Nik Richie is not some brave vigilante, riding a white horse into the mists of Avalon, saving North America from the villians with bad breast implants. Nik Richie is a man that has found a way to make an extraordinary amount of money by exploiting America's love for dirty gossip.

In this blogger's opinion, Nik Richie knows it's gone too far and he is laughing all the way to the bank.

Hey-

So I started this team less than a week ago with no idea how broad and complex this issue really was. In my wildest dreams, I could have never imagined the types of emails I would receive and from whom I'd receive them.

At first, I wasn't quite sure if I would be wasting my time or even biting off more than I could chew. But all of my worries have faded away while my team's devotion to the case has strengthened. We didn't realize truly how many hearts have been broken and lives have been hurt by The Dirty. What's worse is that it seems to have stemmed from one man using his genius for something sinister rather than something positive.

We've been on the phone, attached to our MacBooks and mainlining coffee to keep up the momentum of it all. We started out simply planing an online support group for people that had been affected by The Dirty, but now we've turned into much, much more. And now, we've got a taste for it.

... so we've decided to add a new feature to the blog.

At the victim's request, we will now have a "My Side Of The Story" post once a month. This will give the person a chance to clear up any misrepresentation that may have occurred on The Dirty. We feel that along with helping the victims themselves, this will also give our readers a chance to connect with the people that are in the same situation and hopefully, give them strength to keep their chins up and move on with their lives.

I have to admit that in the midst of all the fuss, we've all been enjoying our incognito statuses. We feel like a team of secret agents. Maybe I'll get a cool black suit and a pair of shades...

A Lifetime of Regret

I think a fair number of us have done it. One night over chat, text or email, you send someone a sexy photo of yourself. Who knows why? Attention? Maybe. It could have been love, lust or plain old adrenaline. Whatever it was, you trusted the person enough to send them compromising photos of yourself in an attempt at intimacy.

I'll be honest, I've done it. Me. The Cleaner. I was young and in love and I wanted him to be thinking about me. I was very lucky. He was a trustworthy person and the photos stayed between the two of us, as they should have.

But what if I wasn't so lucky? What if we had a nasty break-up? What if he kept those photos on his computer and a jealous new girlfriend found them? I may have ended up as the subject of a viral high-school email. I could have ended up on The Dirty.

No matter how strong your relationship is, no matter how in love you are, there is always a chance that things can change and you don't want photos available for anyone to get ahold of.

What most women don't stop to think about in the heat of the moment, is that having photos like that online can not only hurt your reputation, but your job opportunities as well. Many employers search an applicant's name on the internet before considering a hire. In fact, I have it on good authority that many employers refuse to hire anybody that is posted on or affiliated with The Dirty.

Spooky, huh?

My advice: If you're going to take them, use film. Get it developed yourself (don't bring him along) and don't get duplicates. Make a rule that if he wants saucy photos of you, that you keep them, and he can request to see them at any time.

Never, EVER, send photos over the internet. You'll never have control of them again. Even people that you can trust can leave their computers logged in or their phones unlocked.

More About The Cleaner

Hey Guys!

Although I'm choosing to remain anonymous, I still want my readers to get to know me and understand why I've started this revolution.

I'm a 20-something woman that has made a few mistakes in my life but have chosen to rise above it, get an education and fight for what I believe in.

Quite a few years ago, I would have been the type of young woman to be posted on The Dirty and narrowly escaped it by about an inch. I've got friends and ex-boyfriends that have been posted and the fact that The Dirty has gotten so close to my life has terrified me to bits.

I'm afraid though, that The Dirty may have terrified the wrong person. As I stated earlier, I've cleaned up my act and gotten an education. I also happen to share a bed with one of the most intelligent Human Rights specialists in our country. I've also drafted a few friends from the Media, a few lawyers and a salty mother-of-three to the Clean Team. And as it happens, we all seem to have some extra time on our hands.

You may have noticed that I've taken a somewhat wholesome approach when addressing the issue. Let me make it clear now: We do not intend to fight fire with fire, which seems counterproductive. No, we're doing the opposite. We intend to fight fire with water.

Here are a few things that we are making priorities:

Getting the attention of the Government and the Citizens and request that at the very least, a few tweaks and changes be made.
Providing an umbrella of support and a safe haven for the people that have been posted.
Providing education and wholesome information to the Dirty Army so that they can fully appreciate what they have involved themselves in.
Exposing the truth about the effects that The Dirty has on our society.

It's going to be incredibly difficult but in just three days, we've already made noticeable headway.

Obviously our #1 goal is to have the website shut down permanently and make sure that nothing like it can be created again. But, we also do not want our opinions to be misinterpreted. Please do not assume that we do not believe in Freedom of Speech. There is nothing that we believe in more. But when Voltaire said "I do not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your Right to say it!", we're not entirely sure that he had a 16 year old with an ill-advised spray-tan in mind.

Many of the posts on The Dirty are blatant Cyber-Harassment cases. What Nik Richie is doing is making it possible for these people to harass their peers anonymously. This is not an example Freedom of Speech.

I started this Blog in an attempt to have a positive impact on our society and I plan to see it through along with the rest of The Clean Team. If at any time, you believe that we are doing any harm, please inform us of your concerns and we will take them into consideration.

STD's And The Dirty.

STD's or STI's are one of the scariest realities a person can face. Often times, learning that you've contracted an STI can tear apart your life. They affect thousands each year and as a sexually active society we are all at risk of contracting one, no matter how careful we are.

As many of you already understand, your medical history is between you and your doctor. Doctor/Patient confidentiality is very important and having that compromised in any way is a serious offence and it should be taken seriously.

In May 2009, A woman filed a lawsuit against Nik Richie and The Dirty when post on the website stated that the woman was infected with the Herpes Virus and called her numerous hurtful names. Nik Richie also commented on the post, making snide remarks to fuel the comments. This woman did in fact, have herpes and filed a lawsuit against Nik Richie for defamation. She won. The judge ruled against Richie in October 2009, stating that the post was “not of legitimate public concern,” and that he had acted with malice.

If you have an STI, you have already suffered enough shame and embarrassment. If you have been posted on The Dirty about having an STI, you need to contact a.) A Lawyer and b.) The Clean. You've got a case. Don't let these people get away with hurting you. It's not legal. It's not right.

Stay healthy, know your enemy and know your Rights.

If you've ever visited TheDirty.com, you know about the infamous "WOULD YOU?" page. This is a page where readers can post photos of women they want Nik Richie to comment on. In every post, they say a little bit about the person (good, bad, true or false)and at the end they say, "So Nik, Would you?" His answer is almost always "No."

Here are a few examples of his charming comments:

"No, she’s a curve-less horse. Her nose is bigger then her t*ts and her backs more wrinkly then her hair."- Nik

"NO, she has a muffin top on the top and the bottom, it happens when your thunder thighs bunch up." - Nik

"No, I can’t tell which are her rolls and which are her flapjacks." - Nik

Cute, huh?

Now, this website and Nik Richie's twitter receive countless requests from the women themselves asking Nik for advice on how to make themselves more beautiful in his opinion. This is a heartbreaking tale of insecure women wanting approval from someone that doesn't deserve their time in the first place.

Thank-You very much for your unsolicited opinions Nik, but not every woman needs a nose job, breast implants and a scarily-low BMI to be considered sexy, or even perfect.

The only place that it's cool to be like everyone else is in junior high. After that, you want to be unique and original.

The Clean Team believes in loving what you were born with, making choices that make you feel good and telling the toxic people with harsh opinions to kiss your cellulite-filled a$$! Now, this is not to say that we don't believe in getting a "touch-up" or two at a aesthetics clinic, but the choice should be your own and influenced by no one else.

In this Blogger's opinion, you should do your best to be fit and healthy but never allow one person's opinion to negatively affect how you feel about yourself.

Don't let The Dirty slow you down!

Sex is something that everyone should consider carefully and here at The Clean, we would suggest that you wait as long as possible to lose your virginity and make sure that it's something you really want. {Remember to wear a condom.}

That being said, men have been sleeping around for hundreds of years and finally, we women are starting to catch up with them. Sex is a beautiful, healthy and enormously fun way to fill your time and if you are an adult, it is your Right to have as much sex as you'd like without worrying about other people's opinions.

Along with many other blaring hypocrisies, Nik Richie suggests that women "keep their legs closed" if they don't want to be posted on The Dirty. In the same breath, he will make suggestions about how to get lucky to the men calling in on his radio show. I don't know about you, but I think we should ignore his silly, hypocritical opinions and get ourselves laid!

As long as you are safe (wear a raincoat!), sex is something that gets a thumbs up from The Clean Team!

Another study published in the same journal found that frequent intercourse was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure in cohabiting participants. Yet other research found a link between partner hugs and lower blood pressure in women.

2. Sex Boosts Immunity

Good sexual health may mean better physical health. Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. Scientists at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., took samples of saliva, which contain IgA, from 112 college students who reported the frequency of sex they had.

Those in the "frequent" group -- once or twice a week -- had higher levels of IgA than those in the other three groups -- who reported being abstinent, having sex less than once a week, or having it very often, three or more times weekly.

3. Sex Burns Calories

Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. It may not sound like much, but it adds up: 42 half-hour sessions will burn 3,570 calories, more than enough to lose a pound. Doubling up, you could drop that pound in 21 hour-long sessions.

4. Sex Improves Cardiovascular Health

While some older folks may worry that the efforts expended during sex could cause a stroke, that's not so, according to researchers from England. In a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, scientists found frequency of sex was not associated with stroke in the 914 men they followed for 20 years.

And the heart health benefits of sex don't end there. The researchers also found that having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of fatal heart attack by half for the men, compared with those who had sex less than once a month.

5. Sex Boosts Self-Esteem

Boosting self-esteem was one of 237 reasons people have sex, collected by University of Texas researchers and published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

That finding makes sense to Gina Ogden, PhD, a sex therapist and marriage and family therapist in Cambridge, Mass., although she finds that those who already have self-esteem say they sometimes have sex to feel even better. "One of the reasons people say they have sex is to feel good about themselves," she tells WebMD. "Great sex begins with self-esteem, and it raises it. If the sex is loving, connected, and what you want, it raises it."

6. Sex Improves Intimacy

Having sex and orgasms increases levels of the hormone oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps us bond and build trust. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of North Carolina evaluated 59 premenopausal women before and after warm contact with their husbands and partners ending with hugs. They found that the more contact, the higher the oxytocin levels.

"Oxytocin allows us to feel the urge to nurture and to bond," Britton says.

Higher oxytocin has also been linked with a feeling of generosity. So if you're feeling suddenly more generous toward your partner than usual, credit the love hormone.

7. Sex Reduces Pain

As the hormone oxytocin surges, endorphins increase, and pain declines. So if your headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms seem to improve after sex, you can thank those higher oxytocin levels.

In a study published in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 48 volunteers who inhaled oxytocin vapor and then had their fingers pricked lowered their pain threshold by more than half.

8. Sex Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk

Frequent ejaculations, especially in 20-something men, may reduce the risk of prostate cancer later in life, Australian researchers reported in the British Journal of Urology International. When they followed men diagnosed with prostate cancer and those without, they found no association of prostate cancer with the number of sexual partners as the men reached their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

But they found men who had five or more ejaculations weekly while in their 20s reduced their risk of getting prostate cancer later by a third.

Another study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that frequent ejaculations, 21 or more a month, were linked to lower prostate cancer risk in older men, as well, compared with less frequent ejaculations of four to seven monthly.

9. Sex Strengthens Pelvic Floor Muscles

For women, doing a few pelvic floor muscle exercises known as Kegels during sex offers a couple of benefits. You will enjoy more pleasure, and you'll also strengthen the area and help to minimize the risk of incontinence later in life.

To do a basic Kegel exercise, tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor, as if you're trying to stop the flow of urine. Count to three, then release.

10. Sex Helps You Sleep Better

The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep, according to research.

And getting enough sleep has been linked with a host of other good things, such as maintaining a healthy weight and blood pressure. Something to think about, especially if you've been wondering why your guy can be active one minute and snoring the next.

Erm... Sort of. Not really. Sometimes.

FEAR NOT! The Clean Team is on it!

Fact: Nik Richie and TheDirty.com HAVE broken The Law and have faced several lawsuits because of it.

Total Bollocks: TheDirty.com is perfectly legal and doing nothing wrong.

Fact: Different countries have different laws on the subject, some of them vague and some of them very clear.

Here are a few to consider:

THE U.S LAW SAYS:

No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.

In analyzing the availability of the immunity offered by this provision, courts generally apply a three-prong test. A defendant must satisfy each of the three prongs to gain the benefit of the immunity:

1. The defendant must be a "provider or user" of an "interactive computer service."
2. The cause of action asserted by the plaintiff must "treat" the defendant "as the publisher or speaker" of the harmful information at issue.
3. The information must be "provided by another information content provider," i.e., the defendant must not be the "information content provider" of the harmful information at issue.

What this means is that in the U.S, TheDirty.com can continue to do what they do best, as long as they maintain their Communications Decency Act Immunity, which means complying with the above test. However, due to the damage that they are causing and the manner in which the website is conducted, their days might be numbered. You see, a website owner may lose CDA immunity if it ceases acting as a mere passive conduit and takes an active role in creating, screening, and/or editing the unlawful content. Incidentally, Nik Richie does just that.

THE LAW IN THE UNITED KINGDOM SAYS:

The laws of libel and defamation will treat a disseminator of information as having "published" material posted by a user and the onus will then be on a defendant to prove that it did not know the publication was defamatory and was not negligent in failing to know: Goldsmith v Sperrings Ltd (1977) 2 All ER 566; Vizetelly v Mudie's Select Library Ltd (1900) 2 QB 170;Emmens v Pottle & Ors (1885) 16 QBD 354;

Remove any photo's that can be used against you on social networking websites, and remove the "friends" that you aren't sure you can trust. It takes making the wrong person angry, and you could be posted on TheDirty.com

As soon as I found out about TheDirty.com, I was horrified to learn that someone can just take a photo you've posted on Facebook and use it to hurt you.. but they can and so far, it's legal.

Hi!

My name is Emmanuelle, and I'm The Cleaner.

I am a woman. I garden, cook, have sex, make mistakes, vacuum rarely and have been told that I have a fantastic set of teeth. My partner in crime (and also in bed) is a lawyer that specializes in Human Rights and can make a mean Bolognese sauce.

I've never been posted on TheDirty.com *phewf*, but I have friends that have been posted and I watched it seriously effect their lives.

I'm choosing to stay anonymous lest my life be ripped apart at the hand of Nik Richie. I am also exercising my right to do so because Nik Richie has found a sneaky way to take The Right To Privacy away from the people, and I want to take that power away from him.

I understand that starting this blog has opened me up to being scrutinized by The Dirty Army and I look forward to hearing all of their thoughtful and educated remarks, but I will not allow any negativity to be posted on The Clean. Who is Nik Richie?

Hooman Karamian is the man behind the diabolical website that prompted the need for my blog. As far as I'm aware, he has changed his names several times and has landed recently on Mr. Nik Richie. Here are a few points (found on TheFrisky.com) to consider:

Karamian has a history of using aliases, calling them “stage names.” One of them—Corbin Grimes—was listed as the executive officer of several companies, including Capitol Imaging Group, Talent 2K, and 97 Radio. Karamian and several others at these companies were accused of scamming musicians from 1998 to 2004, by promising to get them their big breaks and taking lots of their money in the process. [Zimbio]

Karamian married Amanda Toney, a managing partner in a marketing firm, in 2005. She served him with divorce papers last summer. Shortly before receiving the papers, he tweeted (under Nik Richie), “Back 2 Back weekends in Vegas ... what am I doing with my life? I just want to find the one and settle down, maybe have some babies.”

In 2008, Karamian was pulled over for speeding. The officer noticed that his eyes were bloodshot and that he was slurring his words. His blood alcohol level was tested at .165, twice the legal limit. He pleaded guilty to drunk driving, paid $2,000 in fines, and was sentenced to four days in jail. This is made even more ironic because TheDirty.com has specifically stated, “Think twice before getting behind the wheel after drinking. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE, FOLKS.” And warned that people getting DUIs would have their mug shots “plastered up in our hall of shame.”

If you haven't visited TheDirty.com, I suggest you do, but not frequently. Let me take a moment to explain how Nik Richie makes his money:

When a person visits a website, the fact that they visited it gets recorded. This is called a 'Hit' in the internet world. When a website gets a high number of 'hits', it is more likely to receive Advertising interest. The website makes money off ad's that want to be posted on the website because it receives a high traffic volume.

When you run a media website that people are interested in such as PerezHilton.com, TheNewYorkTimes.com, ext, you will receive a high number of 'hits', when you have a juicy story.

Exploiting America's love for drama, gossip and juicy details about people's lives, Nik Richie has created TheDirty.com. This website is in the form of a blog. The website's visitors take pictures of people they may or may not know, send it in along with information (true or false) about the person, and Nik Richie posts it for all to see. Can you see how this would generate a lot of traffic? What if you found out that your neighbour's wife was sleeping around, and there was proof in photo's online? Wouldn't you go and check them out? Thats another dollar for Mr. Richie.

Here's the issue: Some of it is true, some of it is false, and some of it is just plain irrelevant but gets commented on regardless. Example: A woman posts provocative photos of herself on her Facebook page. Who knows why? Who cares? She likes them. She then breaks up with her boyfriend. In a fit of rage, he sends those photos in to TheDirty.com and says that she has an STD, that she is promiscuous and that she doesn't take care of her child. Is it true? Maybe. But it could also just be his opinion and now her life is effected quite negatively.

I know what you're thinking. How is this legal?

Nik Richie, his wife and his lawyer paid a visit to Dr. Phil (who wasn't all that keen on the website either) to explain how the website is legal. Basically, Mr. Richie is hiding behind the fact that he is not the person posting the material. He just owns the website. TheDirty.com is blatant Cyber-Bullying, but it is the people that send in the material doing the bullying, not Nik. What he is doing, is making it possible for them to Cyber-Bully anonymously. Nik Richie is what a lovely man on Dr. Phil referred to as a "bottom-feeder". He makes hypocritical, reasonless, baseless and often racist comments on the website, and he knows it and will continue to do it because he understands that feeding the drama will generate more 'hits' for TheDirty.com.

So, lets take the first step. Let's stop visiting the website, and lets try to counteract the damage that Nik Richie has done.
