Outsmart the cold weather by starting your seeds indoors to have a luscious, beautiful garden by the summer! For the northeastern areas of the United States, which experience a colder winter than much of the rest of the country, it is smart to start your gardening indoors in order to have the earliest blooms possible. Also, gardening indoors allows anyone, regardless of the size of their home or apartment, to enjoy a bountiful garden of their own. Here are a few tips to consider:

Seedlings that need to be sown should be started indoors 6 weeks before the last freeze to achieve the earliest bloom.

Ask your local florist for the date of your last expected freeze so you can create your own personal gardening calendar.

The container matters! The container you plant your seeds in should be between 2 and 3 inches deep, and include drainage holes on the bottom to help avoid over-watering.

Most seeds germinate the best when the soil is about 78°F, but make sure to check the back of the seed packets for specific details and specifications. Once the seeds have germinated, they thrive when soil and air temperatures range from 65-70°F.

Proper lighting is important to your garden’s growth. While the seeds are germinating, light is unnecessary. However when they begin to sprout, light becomes crucial for the seedlings’ growth. Most seedlings require 14-16 hours of sunlight to properly grow and develop. It is suggested that the seedlings do their best when they are placed in a south-facing window or under growth lamps.

When watering your seeds, make sure to keep the soil moist but not too soggy or the seeds will rot. One tip is to keep a cover over the seeds until they sprout so the moisture stays trapped.

Some plants and vegetables that thrive in an indoor environment include tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, melons, onions, begonias, zinnias, coleus, petunias, and impatiens. There are also many more flowers and vegetables that can be sown indoors – check with your local nursery or garden store for a custom recommendation.

The LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon® is reducing its carbon footprint in partnership with Green Mountain Energy Company! For the fourth year in a row, Austin Marathon participants can run confidently knowing that they are helping neutralize their impact on Mother Earth.

When registering for the Marathon, runners are able to purchase a $3 Green Ticket to help offset a portion of the CO2 emissions created by their travel to the event. Each purchase supports certified carbon offset projects and helps take action against climate change by balancing out 220 pounds of CO2 emissions.

In 2011, runners took action by purchasing over 1,075 Green Tickets. This program resulted in the purchase of over 235,000 pounds of carbon offsets from the SouthTex Greenwood Farms Landfill in Tyler, TX. This purchase has the same environmental benefit as:

Approximately 265,000 miles not driven

Nearly 70,000 houses turning off lights for one day; or

Recycling a stack of newspaper over 7,500 feet high!

To date, Austin Marathon runners have purchased over 2,125 Green Tickets, which has helped balance out over 935,000 pounds of CO2 emissions!

The 2012 Austin Marathon takes place February 19. Didn’t get a chance to purchase your $3 Green Ticket when registering for the 2012 Austin Marathon and Half Marathon®? It’s not too late! Green Mountain offers Carbon Offsets & RECs to help you neutralize your travel to the event. Get started by calculating your carbon footprint.

Haven’t you heard that green is the new pink for this upcoming Valentine's Day? Make sure when you “I love you” to your valentine that it’s as eco-friendly as your heart desires. Here's some tips to get you started.

Haven’t you heard that green is the new pink for this upcoming, loving holiday? Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Make sure when you say when you “I love you” to your valentine that it’s as eco-friendly as your heart desires!

Give organic and locally-grown flowers. Not only are you supporting the environment, but you’re also supporting the local economy. Ask out your local florist or floral department at the nearest grocers for these beautiful flowers.

Indulge in organic chocolates and wine. Take an additional second to search for the most eco-friendly packaging for these delectable treats! Cruise through markets like Whole Foods to pick up these sweet things.

Shop online for that special someone so you don’t have to waste gas driving from store to store in search of that perfect little something.

Send an e-card or an eco-friendly recycled card. Valentine’s Day is the second largest greeting card holiday in America, participate by sending your loved one an e-card where no paper was used or simply choose a tree-free card when picking one out.

Make your own little perfect gift for your valentine from something around the house. Perhaps a craft from Pinterest? Remember it’s the heartfelt effort that matters.

Eat at a local restaurant to support local farmers and to cut down on the miles. To cut down on even more miles, consider a nice and cozy home-cooked meal from the comfort of your own home.

As Super Bowl XLVI weekend kicks off, Green Mountain Energy Company was proud to be part of yet another initiative to help “green up” the Super Bowl. Green Mountain donated a residential solar array to a home in the city Near Eastside neighborhood as part of the 17th Annual Kickoff to Rebuild, run by Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding Together, which was selected as an NFL Super Bowl Sanctioned Charity, is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities.

Green Mountain CEO Paul Thomas helped “flip the switch” to the solar array on Friday, along with Gary Officer, president and CEO of Rebuilding Together and Jack Groh, Director of the NFL’s Environmental Programs.

The solar array is expected to produce 2,094 kilowatt hours (kWh) of clean energy annually and will save over $11,000 in electricity costs over the life of the array. Great news for the environment and the homeowner’s budget!

By producing pollution-free electricity, the array will help avoid 4,150 lbs of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually, which is like:

Not driving over 4,600 miles

1,212 houses turning off all of their lights for one day

Recycling 10,216 aluminum cans

Green Mountain is honored to be in Indianapolis supporting several NFL sustainability initiatives!

Take the initiative this year to lower your energy bill by making it one of your New Year’s resolutions. Check out these simple and often overlooked cost-reducing tips to help decrease your energy bill this year!

Take the initiative this year to lower your energy bill by making it one of your New Year’s resolutions. Some of the most effective cost-reducing tips are often overlooked by consumers because of how small and insignificant they seem. However, by taking these small yet simple steps for home efficiency, you can decrease your energy bill and in turn save money.

Change your air filter

Change your air filter on a regular basis can to save 1-2% off your total energy costs. Although it might not sound like much, it adds up in the long run. Dirty air filters can restrict airflow, causing the system to work harder and longer to maintain the desired temperature, wasting energy. Filters should be changed every month to maximize system efficiency and save you money!

Install a programmable thermostat

Make your life easier by installing a programmable thermostat. Ideal for those who are out of the house on a regular basis, most programmable thermostats have the capability of being set specifically for each day of the week so that energy is not wasted while the house is unoccupied or while you sleep. Programmable thermometers can save you up to 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.

Seal heating and cooling ducts

You might be losing hundreds of dollars a year on energy costs due to poorly insulated ducts. Air ducts are used to deliver conditioned air throughout the house. Improperly insulated air ducts can leak heated air, resulting in high utility bills and discomfort across the house despite what the thermostat says. In fact, you can lose up to 60% of your heated air due to inadequate duct insulation before it even reaches the register.

Add insulation

Effectively insulating your home, specifically the attic, is one of the most cost effective ways to make your home energy efficient and get more for your money. Installing insulation will help deliver comfort and lower energy bills even during the hottest and coldest months of the year while protecting against air leaks and moisture control. Properly insulated homes can help save up to 20% of your heating and cooling bill.

Seal leaks

Another simple way to reduce your utility bill is to seal the leaks around your home, both seen and unseen, with caulk, spray foam, or with weather stripping to keep the air inside the home and to prevent it from escaping. Almost one third of all air that infiltrates the home comes from holes and cracks from the ceiling, walls or floors.

This year, Super Bowl XLVI is expanding its “greening” efforts by scoring green power from Green Mountain Energy Company!

If you’re throwing a Super Bowl party at home, you can go green too by following these eco-tips. No matter which blue and red team you’re cheering on, you can win in green.

Create paperless invitations- Send electronic invites rather than paper invitations to all of the party guests. Not only will it reduce paper waste, but it’s free and will also ensure faster delivery than snail mail. Use websites such as Evite, Punchbowl, or Facebook Events.

Purchase sustainable paperware or serve your dishes on reusable items- When purchasing tableware for the big game, keep an eye out for biodegradable products and check out your local supermarket or look online at Branch for compostable silverware. Also, instead of serving drinks in plastic cups, offer your guests beverages in a souvenir mug so they can leave the party with an awesome memento regardless of who wins the game.

Reuse and save your decorations to aim for zero waste- Decorate your home with old footballs and other sports gear, and reuse decorations from last year. Remember to save everything for next year’s big game.

Support local businesses- Try cooking all your party food rather than getting take-out. Buy local produce and vegetables for your homemade salsa, cheese and veggie trays, organic meats, and even local, organic beer. Or consider organic treats from your local Whole Foods, Central Market, or farmers’ market.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle- Don’t end up with trash bags the size of a pile up tackle! Create different bins for recyclable items (like plastic, glass and aluminum) and trash so your guests can make easy choices. Remember that items with food waste on them cannot be recycled, but you can use bio-degradable trash bags to be more eco-friendly. If you compost, your empty cardboard pizza boxes can be thrown onto the pile, but make sure to cut or rip them into smaller pieces first.

Green up your own game with carbon offsets – You can take a page from the NFL and offset the environmental impact of your transportation and other day-to-day activities, like consuming electricity, by choosing one of Green Mountain’s carbon offset products. Carbon offsets support projects that reduce or avoid carbon emissions. For things that are hard to cut back on during a party, like electricity usage, carbon offsets are an easy way to go green.

While you’re greening up the rest of the party, throw in some fun Super Bowl eco-facts to the conversation – everyone loves football trivia! For example, what does 15 million kWh of renewable energy have to do with microwaved bowls of queso cheese dip? Or what does an NFL defensive lineman have to do with the CO2 emissions avoided at Super Bowl XLVI? Learn the answer to these questions and more here.
