"While you wait for the others" es una canción del grupo alternativo e independiente Grizzly Bear, incluída en el disco Veckatimest. No me van a creer esto, pero los descubrí gracias al soundtrack de una de las películas Twilight, :/. Pero quienes se hayan atrevido a escuchar los soundtracks saben que a diferencia de las películas, los recopilados están muy buenos, incluyendo bandas como Death cab for cutie, The black ghosts, Muse y hasta Tom Yorke.

Esta canción también cuenta con la participación en el área vocal de Michale Mc Donald, miembro de los Doobie Brothers.

Alanis, en el MTV Unppluged de 1999 (uno de los mejores conciertos acústicos de el canal), versionó la canción en acústico, produciendo como resultado uno de los temas más agradables bonitos, con el toque propio de Morissette. Si se animan, los invito a que también escuchen la canción original.

Miércoles - 80s

Hace mucho tiempo escuché (descrubrí) esta canción en la radio. Me gustó mucho, sobre todo por el coro. Tiene algo de melancolía y profundidad, pero con la tonada de aquellos tiempos alegres como eran los ochenta, por lo menos en cuanto a música se refiere. Yo admiro a Elton John, este tema tal vez no sea uno de los más populares de su repertorio como Sacrtifice, Candle in the Wind y 50 primeros lugares más, pero la estética y dinámica del video son geniales.

"I'm still standing" del álbum Too low for zero, es como un himno de superpoder, que te da energía y fuerza. Tal vez es una reafirmación del propio Elton.

El video dirigido por Russell Mulcahy y grabado en Cannes y Nice.

Me gustaría ver un día de estos a un grupo de baile como éste en la playa, soñar no cuesta.

"Nightcall" es uno de los temas del soundtrack de la película "Drive" protagonizada por Ryan Gosling.

Este tema fue lanzado en el 2010 junto con "Pacific Coast Highway" y otros dos remixes de estas canciones, como un promo álbum del artista electro-house Kavinsky,

La canción fue producido por Guy-Man [Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo de Daft Punk] y en ella colabora Lovefoxx, cantante del grupo brazilero CCS [Cansei de ser sexy]

Me parece muy interesante tanto el background de la canción como la misma. Es oscura y tiene un combinado que la hace atrayente.

Hoy no se trata del video sino de la canción como pudieron haberse percatado.
Una canción que aunque no tiene letras, tiene la capacidad de hacernos quedar perplejos [a quien le guste claro]
Tiene ese melancolía de los grandes de la salsa como Héctor o Willie, pero con un twist de rock psicodélico.
Se trata del maravilloso Omar Rodriguez-López, horiundo de Puerto Rico y tal vez mejor conocido por el mainstream como el guitarrista, productor y director de Mars Volta.
Private fortunes es un tema del álbum Old Money [2008]. El álbum habla sobre las industrias explotadoras y el dinero. Omar, productor y compositor del álbum, también es multiinstrumentalista. Es un artista completo que ha trabajado junto con John Frusciante [ex - Red Hot Chili Peppers] y Ximena Sariñana, además de estar involucrado en otros proyectos artísticos.

Cosmic Girl es un sencillo del álbum con el mismo nombre, lanzado en 1996. Jamiroquai es una banda inglesa de electro pop-acid jazz y disco-funk. Desde 1992 ha creado su propio estilo, haciendo su lugar único en la década de los 90 y el presente. Liderada por Jay Kay, de movimientos ligeros, contagiantes y de los sombreros extravagantes, y antiguamente conformada también por Toby Smith (teclados), Stuart Zender (bajo) y Nick Van Gelder (batería).

El video de esta canción fue grabado en Cabo de Gata, España. Muy buena elección d elocación para un tema que se presta a dar buen humor y a disfrutar la vida

Culture Club - Do you really want to hurt me?

Culture Club es una banda británica conformada en 1981 por Boy George (vocals), Roy Hay (guitarra), Mike Craig (bajo) and Jon Moss batería.

Esta banda, emblemática de los ochenta, se manejaban en géneros como el new wave - reggae. Pioneros del New romantic, Culture club destacaba también por su vocalista, diferente y único, camaléonico.

Por mi parte, desde la 1era vez que vi el video, solo bailo como Boy George, no puedo evitarlo.

"Do you really want to hurt me" es un sencillo promocional del álbum debut Kissing to be clever (1982). La historia cuenta que fue escrita por Boy y dedicada a Jon Moss el baterista. Ellos ya mantenían una relación larga para aquel entonces. La disquera decidió ocultar el amor de George y Moss para evitar "polémicas". Este hecho afectó la relación, y de los sentimientos que de ahí derivan se creó el tema.

Fleetwood Mac - Dreams

Fleetwood Mac es una de mis bandas favoritas de ese tal llamado classic rock, pero ellos no solamente se manejaban en ese género, sino también en el country - blues - ballad.

Originaria de Londres y conformada por Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham y mi querida Stevie Nicks, entre otros.

"Dreams", del album "Rumours", fue grabada en 1976 y lanzada junto con el álbum en 1977.

La canción, fue escrita por Stevie Nicks y según su relato, en solo 10 minutos. En ese momento los otros tres miembros de la banda estaban pasando por experiencias emocionales de separación. De ahí puede que sea el origen de la magia al grabarla.

The Corrs hizo una versión muy popular en 1988.

Esta entrada da inicio a una nueva serie en The Color of the Beat, llamada "Un video al día". De esta manera daremos a conocer muchas mas canciones y el blog siempre estará actualizado. Se organizará por décadas: lunes de los 60s, martes de los 70s, miércoles de los 80s, jueves de los 90s, viernes de 00s y sábado de música actual, recién salida del horno.*

Come together, inicialmente grabada en julio1969 por los Beatles para el álbum Abbey Road y lanzada en la radio en octubre de ese mismo año.

Se dice que la canción estuvo inspirada por el lema de Timothy Leary against Ronald Reagen "come together and join the party".

También se dice que cada una de sus estrofas se refiere a cada uno de los miembros del grupo. Les invito a que las lean y así concluyan cuál se refiere a quién.

Esta canción, en su época y aún actualmente, no es común, tiene un solo de guitarra corto, no tiene coro, se compone de pura rima.

Ha sido una de las más versionadas. Entre quienes la han interpretado a su manera se encuentran: Michael Jackson, Aerosmithn, The Supremes, Diana Ross y muchos más.

Un día estaba navegando por las cuentas de twitter que promueven el uso de la bicicleta en la ciudad (Caracas), y vi un tuit de una gente que promovía su música para escucharla mientras se maneja bicicleta. ¡Y qué buena recomendación! Fui a la página, le di click al botón naranja y voilá, música ultra enérgica salía de las cornetas de mi computadora. Letras que se quedan pegadas y que aunque no tengas bien claro que es lo que dicen la primera vez que las escuchas (como todas las canciones en otro idioma que no es el nativo) igual uno tararea con la tonada. Paseé por emociones tales como melancolía pensativa, rabia y descarga y por supuesto energía y más nada. ¿Qué más se necesita?

- ¿Qué bandas/músicos influyen directamente en HSB como grupo?

-Nuestras bandas influyentes se remontan a las épocas de los 70's 80's 90's pasando desde el Rock clásico, pasando por el Grunge, Garage y hasta el Punk. Entre ellas estan: The clash, The Sex pistols, Flema, La polla, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Radiohead, Kashmir, Nirvana, Temple of the dog, The Gories, White Stripes y Blood Red Shoes

- Imaginen una escena para ser musicalizada con algunos de sus temas y descríbanla

-Año 1920,11:34 p.m. Una noche común en la mesa del rincón de un bar antiguo en el corazón de Nueva York, la mafía italo-neoyorkina se reune a media luz. Seguido entra un extraño, de traje, sobretodo y sombrero negro, se sienta en una de las sillas rojas de la barra acabadas por el uso, pide un un vaso de whisky doble al cantinero. El ambiente se torna tenso, todos los mafiosos de la mesa del fondo enfocan sus miradas en el extraño; él bebe un sorbo de su whisky, luego baja y coloca fuertemente el vaso en la barra, fijando su mirada en la barra se queda pensando unos segundos para levantarse y darse vuelta sacando del sobretodo una metralleta (machinegun de la época) disparando al rincón hiriendo al jefe de la mafia y a algunos cuantos. Ellos responden con otra rafaga, obligándolo a huir. Se detiene abruptamente un carro negro frente a la entrada del bar a escuchándose el chillido de las llantas contra el asfalto. El extraño sube al auto y empieza una persecución por las calles de la gran Nueva York. Entre disparos que van y vienen por parte de los dos bandos a velocidad máxima, el conductor del auto de adelante recibe un disparo fatal ocasionando un accidente y volcándose tres veces para caer de costado y explotar al mejor estilo hollywodense. - Andrés (guitarrista, cantante), ¿cuáles son tus influencias vocales? ¿tus guitarristas favoritos?

-Mis influencias vocales y guitarristas favoritos son muy escasos. La razón es que originalmente soy baterista. Pero ya que recientemente tomé la guitarra y empecé a cantar reconozco que Jack White es una fuerte influencia en ambos aspectos. Nunca he tratado de imitarlo, lo que me parece muy sano porque tengo mis características propias y únicas como cualquier músico, pero se nota a leguas que los discos de The White Stripes han sido una bandera para mi transición musical. Josh Homme es otro artísta que me ha influenciado fuertemente.

- Itza (baterista), ¿cuáles son tus bateristas favoritos?

-Los bateristas que han ayudado a definir mi estilo personal han sido Ringo Star (The beatles), Greg Drudy (Interpol), Dave Grohl (Nirvana) y Meg White (The White Stripes)

- Luis (bajista), ¿Cuáles son tus bajistas preferidos?

-Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) y Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher).

- ¿Cómo y qué los motivó a unirse?

-La música nos llamó de nuevo a la unión. Luego del regreso de Andrés a Venezuela desde Finlandia, al reencontrarse con Luis concretaron el proyecto (que se había gestado antes de la partida de Andrés). Luego al conocernos los tres decidimos ensayar y fue todo tan fluido que no se pudo evitar el nacimiento del proyecto.

- ¿Se consideran sexy bastards?

-Nos consideramos lo que somos realmente, dependiendo de nuestros estados de ánimos cuando nos levantamos y sentimos lo frío de las baldosas ó una cálida alfombra en nuestros pies. Lo sexy lo lleva cada persona al sentirse hermoso por dentro y por fuera cada día. Es una actitud, no una condición. Vivimos para ser sexy.

- A parte de la música, ¿a qué actividades dedican su tiempo? (Hobbies, estudios, trabajo)

-Itza: Estudio diseño gráfico, trabajo, leo lo más que puedo y veo documentales sobre historia.

-Luis: Trabajo como diseñador gráfico freelancer y estudio música.

-Andrés: Estudio música, trabajo freelance en lo que me permita tener tiempo libre para la educación musical y escucho mucha, mucha música.

- ¿Qué los llevó a decidir usar el inglés como su idioma predominante en sus canciones?

-El proyecto fue gestado originalmente para establecerse en Europa y se compusieron la mayoría de los temas con ese objetivo. Los temas tenían ya estructura completa y no queríamos perder tiempo traduciendo lo que tan naturalmente nació en inglés.

- ¿Cuántos temas tendrá su álbum? ¿Cuándo es la fecha de lanzamiento y el nombre del disco?

-La fecha de Lanzamiento sera el 6 de julio de 2012 en el Teatro Bar (Valencia). Esa noche se venderá una edición especial del disco que incluirá un estuche de cuero enumerado y alguien del público se llevará un iPod personalizado por @fuckmycells (Juan Arias) pre-cargado con la música de la banda. El numero de canciones está aun por definirse.

- ¿Tienen pensado grabar un video?

-Si, muy pronto iniciaremos esa fase del proyecto de banda.

- ¿De qué manera ha influido la escena artística valenciana y venezolana en su música?

-Nos ha influenciado el hecho de que se ha creado una comunidad de bandas valencianas. Apreciamos la buena música que se hace en Venezuela admirando las grandes bandas con una buena trayectoria musical como lo es candy 66, Los mentas, Desorden Público, Los Amigos invisibles, Zapato 3 entre otras.

- ¿Qué países les gustaría visitar y darse a conocer como banda?

-Luis: Inglaterra, Francia, España, Chile, Argentina y muchos otros.

-Itza: Me gustaría visitar Italia que es el país originario de mi padre y me gustaría darme a conocer por latinoamérica.

-Andrés: Brasil, Argentina, México, Dinamarca e Inglaterra para comenzar.

- Describan de qué trata "Holy Sexy Bastards". ¿Qué quieren dar a conocer como músicos?

- HSB es música de Ultraviolencia un power-trio de sonidos garage crudos. Las letras son hipotéticas pero muy reales. Queremos hacer entender que no se necesita ser un virtuoso para hacer música auténtica y que sirva como batuta para llevar un mensaje. Nuestro rock es de Garaje y se mantendrá así siempre como condición única para su existencia.

- ¿What bands influence the group?

- Our influential bands are from the 70's 80's 90's. From classic rock to Grunge, Garage and Punk. Some of them are: The clash, The Sex pistols, Flema, La polla, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Radiohead, Kashmir, Nirvana, Temple of the dog, The Gories, White Stripes y Blood Red Shoes.

- Imagine a scene sequence, musicalized with one of your songs. Describe it

-1920, 11:34pm. A normal evening at the corner table in an antique bar in the heart of New York. The Italian-american mafia gather around with half-light. Then, a stranger in suit, overcoat and black hat enters and sits on one of the bar red worn out chairs, he asks the bartender for a double whiskey glass. The atmosphere turns tense, all the gangsters at the back table stare at the stranger. He drinks a sip of whiskey, then strongly puts down the glass on the bar. While he stares at the bar, he thinks for a few seconds, so he gets up, turns around and pulls out from the overcoat a machinegun shooting the Mob Chief and some others. They respond with another burst making him to get away. A black car abruptly stops in front of the bar entry, hearing the tire’s screech against the asphalt. The stranger gets on the car and the persecution starts on the streets of New York. Between rapid gunshots that come and go from both sides, the driver of the front car gets a fatal shot causing an accident and three overturns falling on one side and blowing up in the best Hollywood style. - Andrés (guitarrist, vocals), Which are you vocal influeces? And your favorite guitar players?

- My vocal influences and favorite guitar players are limited. The reason is that im originally a drummer. But now that I picked up the guitar and start to sing, I recognize that Jack White is a strong influence in both ways. I’ve never tried to imitate him, what I think is healthy because I have my own unique characteristics like every musician has, but you can easily notice that The White Stripes’s albums have been my “flag” during my musical transition. Josh Homme is another artista that has strongly influenced me.

- Itza (drummer), who are your favorite drummers?

- The drummers that have helped define my personal style are Ringo Star (The beatles), Greg Drudy (Interpol), Dave Grohl (Nirvana) and Meg White (The White Stripes).

- Luis (Bass player), Who are you favorite bass players?

- Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) and Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher).

- What motivated you to get together?

- Music called us to gather again. After the comeback of Andrés to Venezuela from Finland, he met again with Luis and set the project (that had being brewing before Andres left). Then, once we meet each other three, we decided to practice and all flow so great that we could’t avoid the birth of the project.

- Do you consider yourselves Sexy Bastards?

- We consider ourselves what we really are, depending on our mood when we wake up and feel the cold floor tiles or the warm carpet underneath our feet. Sexyness is what each person has when feeling beautiful inside and out. It’s an attitude, not a condition. We live to be sexy.

- Besides music, what do you spend your time on? (Hobbies, studying, work)

- Itza: I study graphic design, work, and read as much as I can. I also watch history documentaries.

- Luis: I work freelance as a graphic designer and study music.

- Andrés: I study music, work freelance in anything that lets me free time for musical education. I also listen to music, lots of music.

- What brought you to pick English as your main language in your songs?

- The project was originally intended to establish in Europe and the majority of songs were composed with that objective. The tunes had already a complete structure I we didn’t want to lose time translating what naturedly was born in English.

- How many tracks will have your debut album? When is the release? Whats the name of it?

- The launch will be on july 6^th, 2012 in Teatro Bar, Valencia (Night club in Venezuela). That night we will be selling an special edition of the disk that includes a leather enumerated case and someone in th audience can win a personalized iPod by @fuckmycells (Juan Arias) and with the band songs. We are still deciding the number of tracks that the album is going to include.

- Do you guys are thinking of making a video?

- Yes. Soon we will start that phase of the band project.

- In which way the Venezuelan music scene has influenced you?

- The fact that a community of bands in Valencia has been created, has influenced us. We appreciate nice music made in Venezuela, we admire big bands with a good trajectory like Candy 66, Los mentas, Desorden Publico, Los Amigos invisibles, Zapato 3 and others.

- Which countries would you like to visit, and spread the word as HSB?

- Luis: England, France, Spain, Chile, Argentina and others.

- Itza: I would like to visit Italy because its my father’s home country and I would like to spread the word in Latinamerica

- Andrés: Brasil, Argentina, Mexico, Denmark and England, just to start.

- Describe what is “Holy Sexy Bastards” about. What do you want to express as musicians?

- HSB is ultra violence-music, a garage raw sounds power-trio. The lyrics are hypothetical but so real. We want to make people understand that one doesn’t need to be virtuous to make authentic music that actually can bring a message. Our rock is Garage and it will maintain this way always as unique condition for its existence.

The Police, una de las bandas más importantes de la década de los 80, desde sus comienzos (1977) con un poco de post-punk, fueron desarrollando una increíble inclinación hacia el reggae (y new wave), que al final acaparó todo su repertorio, y no sólo eso sino que marcaron una pauta a la hora de crear un quasi nuevo estilo musical. Conformado por Sting, Andy y Stewart, unos muchachos flacos, de buena vibra, de rock en las venas, melodías trincadas y letras originales con mensajes de filosofía ligera, fueron los responsables de éxitos que hablan de mensajes en botellas, de una chica que puede tener una mejor vida y no tener que pararse en el semáforo rojo, una alumna enamorada de su profesor, de caminar sobre la luna, y hasta de temas profundos, como la soledad, la vida y el dominio de la mente. De éste último conversaremos hoy. Se trata de "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (1983).

Esta canción es un viaje, una invitación a comprender la letra, a analizarla. He leído muchos comentarios sobre su significado, comentarios que están de acuerdo solo en una cosa, es la lucha entre alguien y algo (u otro alguien) "superior".

Este tipo de canciones me recuerda a esa power generation (son varias) dónde crearon piezas mágica, que pueden ser eternas, los llamados clásicos.

El video, con movimiento lento continuo solo te invita a que la escuches.

The Police, one of the most important and influential bands of the 80s, played since its begginings (1977) post punk, but with a intense bent for reggae (and new wave), that allow them to almost create a quasi new music genre. Its members were Sting, Andy and Stewart, these thin laidback guys, with good vibes and rock in their veins, well thought melodies and philosphy without trouble lyrics, were responsibles of hits that talk about messages in bottles, a girl that can have a better life and doesn't have to stand on the red lights, a young pupile in love with her teacher, a walk on the moon and even deeper subjects such as loneliness, life and mastering of the mind, which today is the reason of this entry. Im talking about "Wrapped Around Your Finger" (1983).

This song is truly a trip, an invitation to the comprehension of the lyrics.

I've read many comments about its meaning and i can see that they all agree in one thing: Someone is having a battle against something (or someone) "superior".

This type of song reminds me that Power Generation (there're some) where pieces like this seems to be created with magic. Timeless classics.

Anton Corbijn: Cultura musical en un portafolio

Una entrada que he tardado mucho en publicar. Hoy me decidí a realmente a hacerla.

Si quieren ampliar un poco más su conocimiento en el mundo video-musical y en bandas y canciones, pueden hacerlo en estos momentos.

Hace un tiempo encontré una joya de DVD llamado The Work of Director Anton Corbijn, el cuál incluye todos los videos que verán aquí y más, además del documental "Notna" sobre el holandés.

Se trata de Anton Corbijn, fotógrafo y director de videos musicales. Conocido mayormente por su trabajo con la banda Depeche Mode. Corbijn quién a mi parecer ha innovado con irreverencia en el mundo de la interpretación visual de canciones.

"Enjoy the Silence" es una de mis canciones favoritas, Anton realizó por tanto uno de mis videos preferidos de todos los tiempos dónde un rey busca su propio lugar. (En esa lista de videos preferidos quién predomina es Michael Jackson).

A partir de allí me he interesado en indagar más sobre el trabajo del director. Entre las similitudes que he visto en su portafolio cinemático puedo ver videos en blanco y negro, personajes religiosos, movimiento (medios de transporte, carreteras), desenfoque del primer plano, persecuciones, predominancia de los colores básicos como el amarillo y el rojo. Brillo, sombras y juegos con la iluminación, disfraces, personajes fantásticos, comedia (extraña), metáforas, sabe transmitir la sensación de oscuridad, y simpleza en la realización y edición.

Realmente es muy interesante pasearse por el dvd y apreciar la recopilación que ofrece. No me gustan algunos de los videos, pero con que tres sean parte de mi lista de preferidos de todos los tiempos, no está mal ¿verdad?

Uno de los primeros trabajos de Corbijn fue con la banda alemana Propaganda y la canción "Dr. Mabuse" (1985). También hizo el video para la banda holandesa Golden Earring de la canción "Quiet Eyes" (1986). Ha trabajado con The Killers, Joseph Arthur, Metallica, Mercury Rev y Henry Rollings. Hizo el documental sobre Ian Curtis, vocalista de Joy Division llamado "Control" (2007). Y es también responsable de la parte visual de los tiempos de Joshua Tree de U2.

Your new favorite band, based in Santiago de Chile: OH MARGOT!

En un descapotable del '57, van unos amigos, jóvenes, una de ellos agarrando el pañuelo en el aire que tenía cubriéndole el cabello, otro de ellos con lentes cuadrados, el de al lado con chaqueta de jean, y el último rebobinando la cassettera para volver a escuchar la canción. Van por una camino pavimentado de un solo canal, rodeado de praderas verdes, van de paseo, disfrutando el viaje. Bueno la sensación de esta escena se me vino en mente cuando escuché la tercera canción del soundcloud de Oh Margot! "Prime time yell".

Conocí a la banda a través de Fab Ciraolo (baterista), quien hace unas de mis ilustraciones favoritas. A través de su twitter me encontré con el SoundCloud del grupo y lo que puedo decir es que ¡tres canciones no son suficientes! ¿Rock n' roll de esta era? ¡SÍ!

Cinco días atrás sacaron su primer video de la canción "Beautiful embracement" (el cual está más abajo en el post). Me pareció interesante la estética, así que quise conocer más sobre ellos. Empecé a indagar y no encontré mucho así que decidí contactarlos. José (voz y guitarra) de manera abierta y muy amablemente aceptó mi propuesta para conocerlos más a fondo. En nombre de la banda responde para una entrevista exclusiva de The Color of the Beat y éste es el resultado:

BP: ¿Cuáles son sus influencias musicales como banda?

J: UUFFF muchísimas. Coincidimos en Elvis-Buddy Holly, Ramones-Television & Jesus and Mary Chain - My bloody Valentine

BP: Influencias vocales de la voz principal

J: En casa siempre se escucho Sandro, Nino Bravo y Germain de la Fuente de los Angeles Negros. Mi hermano me mostro el rock, y me pegué con las voces de Ian Curtis, Elvis y Johny Cash.

BP: ¿Desde qué fecha están juntos en el proyecto de Oh Margot? ¿Cómo y qué los motivó a unirse?

J: Nos conocemos desde siempre, somos compañeros de colegio. El 2010 nos decidimos a armar la banda y en diciembre 2011 lanzamos el EP HOW TO KILL SOMETIME.

BP: A parte de la música, ¿a qué actividades dedican su tiempo?

J: La banda está formada por Chichi quappe (mujer-sintetizadores), Chacho Vasquez (bajo), Fab Ciraolo (bateria) y jose Ignacio rojas (guitarra y voz). Fab y yo estamos ligado a las artes plásticas. Fab es ilustrador y yo arquitecto. Su trabajo lo encuentras en su página http://fabianciraolo.blogspot.com/ Chichi es músico de escuela. Estudia flauta dulce en el conservatorio. Es una pequeña genio. Compatibilizar la banda con nuestro trabajos no es fácil, mas aun ahora que Fab debe viajar mucho por las exposiciones de sus obras.

BP: ¿De qué manera influye la cultura chilena en sus canciones? ¿Qué podrían decir sobre la movida cultural/musical "juvenil" actual en Santiago?

J: Somos una banda atípica para el medio chileno. Cantamos en inglés y no tenemos grandes influencias de clásicos de la música chilena. De todos modos estamos construyendo nuestro propio nicho dentro de esta escena. Hacer música en Chile hoy por hoy es muy gratificante, ya que hay bandas de excelente nivel, con proyección internacional como Astro, Javiera Mena, Dênver, etc que van abriendo caminos para la proyección de nuevas bandas.

BP: A mí a veces se me da mejor expresar emociones en inglés que en español. ¿Por qué decidieron usar el inglés como su idioma bandera?

J: Me gusta el inglés por que necesitas menos palabras que en español para expresar la misma idea. Me gusta también que dependiendo del contexto, la misma palabra sirva para masculino y femenino. Me encanta su fonética al momento de crear melodías de voz.

BP: Tengo entendido que ahorita tienen en exposición un EP que consta de "Beautiful embracement", "Prime time yell" y "You want it all". ¿Tienen pensado agregar más temas y convertirlo en LP? En tal caso, ¿producirían, además de las ediciones digitales, su material en vinilo? (como en el video)

J: Así es. La misión de este EP de 3 canciones y sus videos es darnos a conocer fuera de Chile. Con ello, buscar ser editados por algún sello internacional y pavimentar nuestro camino hacia un LP de alta difusión. Soñar es gratis, pero estamos trabajando para ello. Tenemos listos los 12 temas para el LP. Algo de eso ya estamos mostrando en vivo. Ahora bien, nos encantaría poder editar nuestra música en vinilo. Por ahora, nuestro esfuerzos están destinados en invadir las redes digitales.

BP: ¿Qué países les gustaría visitar y darse a conocer como banda?

J: Ciertamente la primera parada debiera ser México. Tenemos un feedback constante de chicos que nos escriben en las redes sociales, lo que nos sorprende mucho y nos motiva a planear una vista pronto. La meta inmediata es lograr entrar a algún festival internacional. Vive Latino, Rock al Parque, son ideas que nos entusiasman muchísimo al corto plazo.

BP: Describan Oh Margot en una frase o en tres palabras

J: Mi Pandilla

It goes like this: The first time i listened to Oh Margot was to the song "Prime time yell" and the feeling of it was: A group of friends in a fifty-something convertible, listening to a radio cassette, driving for fun, seeing the prairie, one with a jean jacket, the other with squared glasses, the other one with curly hair and the girl trying to catch her striped shawl.

I found the band thanks to the illustrations of Fab Ciraolo, which some of them are my favorite ones. He's the drummer, i started to follow him on twitter then the band, thats when i bumped into their Soundcloud. And i can say three songs aren't enough!!! ROCK N' ROLL FROM THIS ERA.

Five days ago they released the 1st video of the EP. I found the esthetics interesting and i liked it, so i started to look for more information about them, who were they, who directed the video. I couldn't find much so i asked them if they could answer some questions for The Color of the Beat and José (guitar-vocals) in the name of the band was very kind and said yes. So this is the result, enjoy!:

BP: Wich are the musical influences of the band?

J: UUUFFF we have a lot of them. We share the same taste like on Elvis-Buddy Holly, Ramones-Television & Jesus and Mary Chain-My bloody Valentine.

BP: Lead singer musical influences:

J: At home always listened to Sandro, Nino Bravo and Germain de la Fuente of Angeles Negros. My brother introduced me to rock and I got stuck with the voices of Ian Curtis, Elvis and Johny Cash.

BP: Since when are you together as Oh Margot? How and what motivated you to join?

J: We know each other since forever, we are school mates. In 2010 we decided to form the band and on December 2011 we released the EP HOW TO KILL SOME TIME.

BP: Besides music, what other activities do you spend time in?

J: The band members are Chichi quappe (woman-synthesizers), Chaco Vasquez (bass), Fab Ciraolo (drums) and José Ignacio Rojas (guitar-vocals). Fab and I (José) are into plastic arts. Fab is an illustrator and I am architect. You can find his work on his webpage http://fabianciraolo.blogspot.com Chichi is an educated musician, she studies the recorder (flute) at the conservatory. She’s a little genius. It is hard to juggle with the band and each of our jobs, more now tan ever because Fab has to travel a lot due to his art expositions.

BP: In what way the Chilean culture influence your songs? What could you say about the young cultural music movement in Santiago?

J: We are an atypical band as for the Chilean music industry. We sing in English and we don’t really have deep influences from classics of the Chilean music. We are making our own way in this field anyway. It’s very rewarding to make music in Chile nowadays, considering that there are high-quality bands, with international projection as Astro, Javiera Mena, Dênver, etc, that at the same time have opened up opportunities for new bands.

BP: Sometimes I feel better expressing my emotions in English. Why did you choose english as the band's mother tongue?

J: I like English because you don’t need many words to express an idea like in Spanish. I like it too that depending on the context, the same word can refer to either both genres, feminine and masculine. I love its phonetics when it comes to create voice melodies.

BP: I understand that you guys have circulating an EP with "Beautiful embracement", "Prime time yell" and "You want it all". Have you thought of adding more songs to it and make it an LP? In this case, would you consider to edit the album, along with the digital editions, on Vinyl too? (as seen on the video).

J: That’s correct. The goal with this three-songs EP and its videos its to become known outside Chile. To get a deal with a international record label and built up our way to a wide diffusion LP. Dreaming is free, but we’re working in order to accomplish that. We already have 12 songs for the LP, some of which we are playing live. We would love to edit our music in vinyl but we are concentrated on taking over of digital networks for now.

BP: Wich countries do you want to visit and spread the word to as Oh Margot?

J: Its clearly that Mexico should be our 1^st stop. We have a constant feedback from young people that write to us on the social networks, wich is surprising and it motivates us to plan a visit there soon. Our short-term goal is to get in to some international festival. Vive Latino, Rock al parque are some of them that make us very excited about.

BP: Describe the band in 1 phrase or 3 words:

BP: ¿Por qué eligieron "Beautiful embracement", como tema para su 1er video?

J: Esta canción es muy especial para nosotros. Al momento de grabarla, la versión final del EP fue la 1era toma que hicimos en estudio!!. Nos acomoda mucho tocarla y en sus arreglos se muestra claramente nuestra propuesta musical. Teníamos que abrir nuestra carrera con ella.

BP: ¿Quién ideó el concepto? ¿Quién lo produjo? ¿Por quién está dirigido?

J: El concepto lo armó Katalina Bakradze junto a Fab Ciraolo. Fab conoció a Katalina a través de sus ilustraciones, que circulan por toda la red. Katalina lo contactó para trabajar juntos, y esa colaboración decantó en un video para Margot.

BP: ¿Dónde fue grabado? ¿Por qué eligieron esta locación? ¿Qué conexión tienen con los personajes de la historia?

J: El personaje de todas nuestras canciones es MARGOT, que nace del imaginario de Fab. Margot es una femme fatale, que encarna todo lo que nos atrae y nos hace mal a los hombres. Katalina grabó en su natal Tbilisi, Georgia, ex-URSS junto a su equipo de producción. La edición y estética fue un trabajo en conjunto con Fab, que le imprimió su sello a la imagen.

BP: Why did you choose to make your 1st video with the song “Beautiful embracement”?

J: This song is very special for us. When recording it at the studio, the first take we made from it became the final one for the EP. We have fun playing it, and its arrangements show exactly what is our musical approach. We had to start our carrier with this song.

BP: Who was in charge on the video concept? Who produced it? Who directed it?

J: Katalina Bakradze and Fab Ciraolo were in charge of the video concept. Fab met Katalina thanks to Fab illustrations that are through all the internet. Katalina contacted him to work together, and the result of that collaboration is a video for Oh Margot.

BP: Where did you filmed the video? Why did you choose this location? What links you to the characters of the music video?

J: The main character of all our songs is MARGOT, created by Fab's imaginary. Margot is a femme fatale that embodies all that we are attracted to and what makes bad to men. Katalina filmed the video at her home place, Tbilisi, Gergia, ex-URSS with her production team. The edition and esthetics was an altogether job with Fab, who put his artistic signature to it.

Esta es una entrada que jamás se me pasó por la mente estar escribiendo, hasta esta mañana, cuando vi el nuevo y segundo video de Lana Del Rey, para la canción "Blue Jeans", con oportunidad del lanzamiento de su disco "Born to Die", y que gracias a un enlace de @PeriodicMusik a un artículo en Prefixmag pude apreciar.

Esta vez dirigidas por Yoann Lemoine, un conjunto de escenas ambientadas en "L.A Noir", se pasean entre figuras como la personificación, el símbolo y la metáfora. Un juego de luces, el agua corrediza y slow motion.

En general no me gustan las canciones en las que se hace énfasis a un drama desarrollado por la misma persona que lo sufre. Pero los versos de Lana, versos modernos, rimas inteligentes y a la vez profundas hacen que la canción llegue.

Tal vez reminiscencias de Chris Isaak ("Wicked game", que ya es otra cosa a parte), de una sensualidad en blanco y negro, y de sonidos alternativos - clásicos.

Un espejismo en dos colores, un hombre, con perfil de James Dean, un semi Dios para una de los protagonistas, quién decide entrar en el agua, atraída por un magnetismo que no la lleva a nada sino a sumergirse y sumergirse, encontrándose una bestia de grandes mandíbulas, atrapada, no parece querer zafarse..

Definitivamente una excelente representación visual de la canción si leen las lyrics.

Anteriormente no me interesaba el trabajo de Del Rey, quizás porque la conocí gracias a una repentina imagen cliché que se ha hecho de ella, pero ahora que veo una dirección más clara en su posición en la melodía, me empieza a gustar su trabajo, SIN DUDA tiene calidad vocal. Aprendí que no debo juzgar a la primera presentación importante en vivo de un artista en ascenso, que a ver vamos por lo menos no dobló, cantó en vivo, no muy bien, pero ¡cantó! De todas maneras no todo está dicho sobre Lana, aún le queda camino por recorrer, no sé si proyectos futuros me gustarán, pero éste sé que me gustó completamente.

Grimes - Oblivion

Del álbum "Visions" es una canción a la que le das play and replay and replay and replay. ¡Sí! Claire Boucher -canadiense- aprovecha su tono agudo y lo mezcla muy bien con sonidos tan alternativos que hacen una buena combinación. Aquí nos presenta la incoherencia y la diferencia caminando de la mano, divertidas, cómicas y agradables de ver. Es que los niveles de esta canción transmiten energía, ganas de bailar frente al espejo, rareza y un poco de locura. El aspecto noventoso del video le hace justicia al sonido. Una chica incomprendida, amable, divertida un poco inocente pero con un punto de vista, en un ambiente tan discordante que atrae. La cámara lenta introduce el dramatismo y los personajes lo hacen divertido. En fin es un dualismo eterno que dio en el clavo.

"Hipsterismo" fue el 1er término que se me vino a la mente para describir lo que vi. Y es que es una chica rara y cool de pelo rosa y combinaciones de estampados que al ser tan opuestos quedan bien... ¡eso es el video! un lugar dónde lo inconexo se entiende.

Es satisfactorio, ver el producto de los tiempos actuales, tiempos digitales, dónde cualquier persona que tenga un deseo lo puede llevar a cabo y correr la voz con facilidad. Es una cultura DIY (Do it yourself = "hazlo tú mismo) autodidacta, que da paso a la exploración y originalidad. Y en este caso no es un simple single, tiene calidad vocal y melodía diferente. El resultado es interesante.

Me ayudó a llegar a una conclusión: Me gusta lo incoherente.

PD: La escuché primero en el blog de PopLab hace ya unas semanas y repentinamente visitando Youtube conocí el video.

Hace poco venía escuchando la radio con mi mamá en una tarde ya casi nocturna y de repente empiezan, esos sonidos inconfundibles de su eterna banda, -lluvia, batería, teclado- y dije ¡sí, es ella! luego su original voz sigue, recitando: "If i tell you, if i tell you now..." ("The sweetest taboo") produciendo un estado de confort, de tranquilidad, de buen humor, que persiste. Es Sade.

A finales de la década de los 90, cuando Puma TV -Canal venezolano de música 24hs- todavía era un canal muy popular, yo reconocí a Sade. Me llamó mucho la atención el video de "King of Sorrow" (la combinación de canción y video). En mi afán que tenía en aquella época por aprender y entender más el inglés (aún lo tengo) me quedé escuchando, luego las imágenes atrajeron mi atención. La historia de una madre soltera dedicada a sus pequeños y tratando de persistir en su sueño, el canto. Esas historias de valentía cotidiana, que tienen mayor mérito y son más dignas de admiración que algunas otras cosas. Es el 2do sencillo de su quinto álbum Lovers rock (2000).

Sade, a lo largo de su carrera, siempre se ha paseado por el smooth jazz, R&B y soul. No hace una excepción en "Smooth Operator", una de las más exitosas del álbum Diamond Life (1984). Es interesante y hasta divertida la manera en que retrata a un hombre "de mundo", de corazón frío, como si ella lo empezara a conocer. No sé porque pero siempre me produce una sensación de pasado, me recuerda al Hotel Hilton -de Caracas-y a mi niñez... ¡No! esperen, ya recuerdo, esta canción se escuchaba en la recepción y en el lounge del antiguo Hilton. No me hospedaba ahí, vivía cerca y se podía pasear, ver las vitrinas de arte, y hasta pasar un día en la piscina, ir al Teresa Carreño, luego al parque los Caobos y al museo de Ciencias y el de Arte Contemporáneo. Aquellos tiempos, sencillos, accesibles, fáciles. En fin.

Sade es de Nigeria, de madre inglesa y padre nigeriano. Se mudó a Inglaterra con su madre después del divorcio de sus padres. Desde jóven admiraba más la audiencia de algunos músicos, que a los propios músicos. Cómo estos atraían gente de todo tipo, abuelitos, madres, niños, jóvenes, blancos, negros, amarillos. La música al principio no fue su primera opción, cursó estudios en moda. No es cuando unos amigos le piden que por favor los ayude con su preparamiento vocal que ella decide desarrollar en pleno su talento a pesar de que cantar la hacía sentir nerviosa. Al igual que el canto también disfruta escribir, componer. Una banda de jazz de aquel entonces (1981) la invitó en su gira para que vocalizara. Junto a uno de los integrantes de Pride -la banda-, escribió Smooth Operator y atrajo la atención instantánea de un sello discográfico que sólo estaba interesado en ella, no en los jazzistas. Ella rechazó el trato por dos años hasta que planteó aceptar si con ella iban tres de los integrantes del grupo. El resto es historia como dicen, y trabajo arduo. Historia plasmada en sus varios discos.

Otro de sus éxitos es "No Ordinary Love", que ha sido versionado múltiples veces. Originario de 1992 en el incluído en el álbum Love Deluxe. Ya de por sí la estrofa magnetiza.

Y "Paradise" de 1988, del album Stronger than pride. Una cuestión bailable, magnífica, de cócteles, de ligereza al caminar (así se siente).

Las canciones de Sade usualmente hablan de amor, desamor, y experiencias de otra índole, compartidas en soul, con melancolía, con estilo, madurez, una melodía siempre inteligente que fácilmente te acompaña en solitud, te ayudan tal vez a entender el romance. Y por qué no, también muy apropiadas y recomendables en momentos "Barry White".

He aquí una pequeña selección de mis canciones favoritas que pueden servir como introducción a su trabajo. Pero les aseguro, no son las únicas canciones dignas de darles play.

No son suficientes las descripciones en forma de halagos para John.

Uno de los personajes que más han influido en mi vida musical, en mi filosofía de vida y en mi manera de ver las cosas.

Cuando John escribía lo hacía de modo inteligente, transmitía un mensaje, era un verdadero compositor. La manera cómo combinaba y lograba que la melodía fuese ideal para lo que escribía, era mágico.

Personalmente siento mucha afinidad con Lennon. Dicen por ahí que uno tiene diferentes soulmates, John es uno de mis soulmates musicales.

En esta oportunidad les traigo este tema. Es rudo, es una crítica, que se hace a él mismo. En sus tiempos de "locura" cuando se fue a Los Ángeles. Dejaré que él mismo les cuente de qué fue:
