Among the other founding members of, AGRA, we find: Monsanto, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis, GlaxoSmithKline, Procter and Gamble, Merck, Mosaic, Pfizer, Sumitomo Chemical and Yara. The fact that these corporations are either chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturers is no coincidence.

Seeds of Opportunism,
Climate change offers these businesses a perfect excuse to prey on the poorest countries by swooping in to "rescue" the farmers and people with their GMO crops and chemical pesticides. These corporations eradicate the traditional ways of the country's agriculture for the sake of enormous profits.
The introduction of GMOs drastically affects a local farmers income, as the price of chemicals required for GMOs and seeds from Monsanto cripples the farmer's meager profit margins.

There are even many cases of Monsanto suing small farmers after pollen from their GMO crops accidentally cross with the farmer's crops. Because Monsanto has a patent on theri brand of seed, they claim the farmer is in violation of patent laws.

These disgusting and inhumane practices will not be tolerated.

What the Heck Wednesday - What the heck is wrong with having pet chickens?

Not a darn thing in my opinion! A few years ago we went through a battle of saving our pet chickens from a municipal order to remove them. This was an extremely stressful time for us as our pet roosters were as dear to us as our pet dog.

Time and time again municipal authorities showed up on our property unannounced to "inspect" our pets. We showed them that our birds would go in their house on command, walk on a leash, they were clean, tidy and treated better than many of the roaming cat and dog pets in our neighborhood, several of which frequently trespassed on our property to defecate on our lawn and in our flower beds.

Yet all that aside council stated that the roosters were farm animals and our half acre of residential property was not suited to having farm animals. I also pointed out that the one complaining neighbor frequently drove a "farm" tractor on our residential roads and parked it in his driveway - So what the heck was up with that?

Reading through the municipal guidelines we discovered some very interesting points. First of all we were not permitted to have "farm animals", but you need to have a "farm" to have farm animals - Right? We clearly have a very well kept residential property and not a farm. Another thing we found was that under the agricultural definitions, farm animals were described in units. For example 1 horse was an animal unit and interestingly enough 100 chickens was an animal unit...yes 100!

So therefore we did not have a farm animal unit as we only had a total of 7 pet roosters - a far cry from 100!

This combined with our intent for our animals was proof enough that we did not harbor farm animals on our residential property. We had no intentions to eat our pets or profit from them in any way - Heck no!

Lets remember that a chicken is a bird like any other bird. They can be trained, are smart and are clean...No different than a parrot.

It has to come down to this...

What defines a pet? "A domestic or tamed animal or bird kept for companionship or pleasure and treated with care and affection"

What defines a farm animal (livestock)? "Livestock refers to one or more domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as food, fiber and labor. ...any animals kept for use or profit"

What about other types of pets? Potbelly pigs - are they farm animals? Rats? Maybe people who keep pet rats are running a commercial labratory operation, since a large portion of the rat population is used in this manor? What about goldfish or Koi? If you keep those is it a fishing or aquaculture operation? And people who sell a few kitens? Isn't that profiting from animals?

That should be the end of it. Whatever the animal is, if it is cared for, tame and treated as a pet and is not raised in an agricultural setting and used for profit - then it is not a "farm animal" and is indeed a pet.

We took this information to the provincial hearing and it was decided that our roosters could roost in our residential area! So we could finally rest easy and so could our roos!

Whew!

Recently, I learned of a man in Nova Scotia, Alex Loomer, he and his family are going through the same ordeal, this hits a sore spot with me as I think it is utterly ridiculous that people can be harassed over the type of pet they keep!

Alex Loomer has been ticketed by the county for violating its bylaws, which state that raising fowl and other farm animals is not permitted in a growth or residential area. Loomer owns a 12-hectare property on the Marshall Road, little more than a stone’s throw from the village of Kingston, a designated growth area.

The county has told him to remove his feathered friends. He has refused. He’s also been ordered to appear in court on Feb. 16 to answer to the charge. In the meantime, he’s subject to a fine of $226 per day for every day he disobeys the order. What the Heck?!

He plans to represent himself in court.

“It’s crazy," Loomer said Wednesday.

“Wouldn’t you think they’d have bigger priorities?"

Loomer has lived in the same location for 49 years. He has a small-machine repair shop on the property and has neighbours on both sides. Noting that he pays his taxes, he said he feels his property rights have been violated.

“I can’t get rid of them because it’s a death sentence," he said as three roosters followed him about his workshop.

Given as an Easter present last April to his 12-year-old daughter when they were dayold chicks, Loomer said his little girl would be devastated if the birds were destroyed.

The fowl are kept in a nearby coop when they’re not pecking and scratching at his feet or resting on his shoulder.

“They’re pets," Loomer said. “That’s all they are. We’re not involved in agriculture whatsoever with them."

I wish Alex and his chickens (acey, raven, rocky, flame and flash) all the best and hope they win their day in court!

Please help them and others have the right to keep chickens as pets, more chickens in the world deserve the right to be pets!

Fashion Friday...Why Organic Fashion?

We all know that many synthetic fibers can irritate our skin but did you know that a natural cotton t-shirt which is conventionally grown can sprayed with almost 1/3 of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides? Yet if you read how toxic some of these pesticide can be, it is recommended if an applicator gets these pesticides on his clothing that clothing should be discarded...but they are spraying it directly on the cotton used to make clothes!... Doesn't make a lot of sense.

You might be appalled to realize that the chemicals needed to grow "natural" cotton is contributing to the damage agri-chemicals cause to people, wildlife, and the environment.

If that's not enough, most clothing is dyed with toxic dyes, many containing heavy metals and treated with synthetic washes and "finishes" including numerous toxic chemicals which are added at each stage; silicone waxes, harsh petroleum scours, fabric softeners, "sizing" chemicals, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia, and formaldehyde, to name just a few. These chemicals are almost impossible to entirely wash out!

Just wearing clothing with all of these synthetic treatment can cause skin irritations and many can even absorb into your bloodstream.

There is an alternative - Go organic!

Pakucho Color-Grown Cotton from Peru

Organic clothing may be more expensive but it tends to last longer. The absolute best you can buy is clothing made from unbleached, undyed, colorgrown organic cotton, hemp, linen, kapok, rammie, alpaca, wool, silk and nettle fiber.

Next best options are organic clothings which are unbleached and use completely natural dyes.

If you can't find that then go for organic clothing with low-impact dyes but be sure to launder your clothes well before wearing.

If you must buy conventionally grown cotton clothing then to minimize your risk of exposure to the chemicals used to grow, dye & process the fabric, be sure to launder your clothes with baking soda, pure organic castile soap and some vinegar in the rinse cycle...If there is any dye leaching from the fabric, launder until no dye remains. Hanging it inside out on a line in the rain or snow also helps "detox" clothing items. For me this can sometime take weeks or months.

I recently viewed this video on youtube (see video below mine) of a lady peeling some "residue" off her lettuce. My first thoughts were that it was probably because it was not certified organic...but I was wrong.

What the heck is going on with our food? What the heck is on my "organic" lettuce?

Hey all,

Last Monday I showed you how to make a completely food grade non toxic wood aging stain which I used on a project built by my husband Zuki.

All of Zuki's projects are made only with natural wood (no plywood or fiber-boards of any kind) and without the use of any glues!

The entire project was built for less than $10 in materials (for hardware & screws) the lumber was from the scrap pile he had kicking around in the shop.

Did you know that there is little to no regulations on conventionally grown herbs & spices. What the heck is chloroform & formaldehyde doing in my clothes and linens?

Snuggly, cuddly, soft and scented; commercialism and corporate marketing teams design such enticing advertisements.

Newborns wrapped in soft linens, soft summer breezes, scent beads and hugs galore; all if you use a piece of their colorful boxed fabric sheets in your dryer.

How the heck could any harm come from softness, scents and cuddles?

Fabric softeners are some of the most toxic products made for daily household use.

They contain mixtures of highly toxic chemicals such as chloroform, benzyl acetate and pentane. These are known to cause cancer and damage to lungs, brain, and nervous system.

Strangely enough, these chemicals are even more dangerous when used as directed; heated in clothes dryers. What the heck is up with that?

These noxious fumes not only penetrate your clothes but are released into neighborhood air and everyone for blocks around are forced to breathe them in.

Fabric softener chemicals are made to stay in clothes fibers and slowly release for a very long time. That slow release of chemicals into the air affects the health of those wearing the clothes and of people around them; Makes for some pretty toxic hugs..gasp!

Some of the symptoms caused by fabric softener fumes are tiredness that is not cured by resting, difficulty breathing, and nervousness for no known reason, difficulty concentrating and remembering, dizziness, headaches, sick stomach, feeling faint, rashes and/or difficulty controlling body movements.

Babies, children, the elderly, and people who are already sick or immune compromised are especially sensitive to the ingredients in dryer sheets. Damage can be permanent, causing lifelong illness. Babies often react with rashes, frequent crying or diarrhea.

Experts suggest a possible connection between Sudden Infant Death and the use of these products for washing baby clothes and crib sheets and blankets.

But how the heck can fresh summer breezes and fruity or floral scents be so bad?

Most fabric softeners have synthetic fragrance added to them, which makes them even more toxic. Although they may make your clothes feel soft and smell of synthetic breezes and blossoms, fabric softener and dryer sheets are some of the most toxic consumer products.

And chances are those who use common commercial detergents, fabric softeners, bleaches, and stain removers would think twice if they knew they contained toxic ingredients that could cause cancer and brain damage.

The toxic active ingredients in fabric softeners are so pungent and strong smelling that they require the use of additional synthetic heavy fragrance chemicals just to cover up the noxious smells.

In other words, remove all the added fragrance that endears people to fabric softeners and the real smell of the chemical-laden fabric softener may have people saying "What the heck?!"

As you wear clothing that has been coated and imbedded with fabric softener the chemicals are slowly released into the air for you to inhale and absorbed by your skin. Dryer sheets are particularly noxious because they are heated in the dryer and the chemicals are released through dryer vents and out into the environment.

Log term and immediate health effects linked to fabric softeners include; central nervous system disorders, asthma, acne, eczema, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blood pressure reduction, irritation to skin, mucus membranes and respiratory tract, pancreatic cancer and sudden infant death.

Here is a list of a few of the chemicals found in some fabric softeners and dryer sheets:

Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer

Formaldehyde: Linked to many illnesses

Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant

Ethanol: On the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazardous Waste list and can

cause central nervous system disorders.

Limonene: Known carcinogen .

Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders.

Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled.

So I'm tossing the toxins now....What the heck should I use?

I's easy to be clean, there is no need to cuddle up with chemicals there are many simple solutions which will leave your laundry soft and your health intact.
