World Upside Down:
an online arts school for students K-12.

Month 1 – Media Literacy and Research Methodologies (Dr. Sharon Wyly)

My brand new MacBook Pro had to be shipped to CA for a week. The motherboard was replaced. Of course, I was able to delay all of projects until I got my machine back, but it was a little freaky starting off the program. Good reminder that even with all of the wonders technologies offers, we always have to have a back up plan and be sure to BACK up our computers daily if possible.

Lesson: Even MACs can have defects (most of the time I think they’re perfect).

FSU was a HUGE help with all of the adjustments to the online platform.

Month 2 – Multiple Learning Theory Applications (Beth Strugeon)

I couldn’t get my iWeb published. I called FSU and they said to call Apple. One Apple specialist tech spent about 45 minutes with me on the phone explaining that the files were corrupted and said I’d have to do it all over again. Then I got an educational Apple specialist tech, and he figured it out right away…Months later I had the same problem. Bottom line is that neither the managers at Apple nor the managers at Mobile Me could explain why I was having the problems I was having nor how to fix them permanently, but sometimes iWeb publishes correctly even when it says it doesn’t. By the time graduation came around, MobileMe was going free and Apple was offering the Cloud (probably a step in finding a more permanent solution to many MobileMe related problems).

Month 3 – Training and Motivational Development (Michelle Haynes)

The audio files on my AIPTEK camera had a soft buzz, so I sent AIPTEK my video files. They confirmed that the files showed a defect in the camera. I sent the camera to them and got it back with the exact same problem. All audio is virtually useless because of the noise.

Month 4 – Emergent Technologies in a Collaborative Culture (Rene Hathaway)

No real issues.

Month 5 – Education Design and Evaluation (Dr. Deason)

I recorded 5 hours worth of video with my AIPTEK camera and sound through Garageband. The files mysteriously disappeared from the camera. Had to come up with a completely new project. AIPTEK said it was the memory card. I still haven’t had time to follow up on that one.

Someone hacked FSU’s email system, and there were two students whose emails were professionally hacked. Guess what? I was one of them. The screenshot shows you how severe it was. It took about a month to try to get the email issue fixed. FSO support passes this issue on to the tech department, and they were so inundated with all of the bugs that I got pushed to the bottom of the list. I lost most of my emails and very important contact information. It took about 2 months for sent emails to show up in the sent file. But don’t worry: I was probably a .0001% statistic.

Month 6 – Digital Media and Education Applications (Lisa Smith)
FSO switched out their online platform, and this created all kinds of kinks towards the very end of the month. I was a little surprised because they’re typically SO seamless in their processes, but unfortunately this new online launch caught them off guard.

Month 7 – Musical Theory & Education Applications (Dr. Richard Repp)
Continued to experience issues with FSO on the discussion board. Had to make posts multiple times, but they worked through all of the kinks by the end of the month. Not sure what industry standards are for troubleshooting once a new online platform is launched. I think it took FSU about a month to work everything out.

Month 8 – Filmmaking Principles and Education (Kathy Craven)

For my first film project, I recorded over 9 hours of film only later to find that it almost all magically disappeared from my wonderful AIPTEK camera. The clips were filmed on 4 days, and I checked each time to make sure that they had taken correctly. I ended up having to scrap the whole project and start all over. Very, very frustrating…another part of the learning process.

I was really frustrated this whole class because my AIPTEK video was so bad. You can tell from my projects for month 8…the camera started zooming in and out and blurring all on its own, to say nothing of the continued buzz. Thankfully, Prof. Kathy Craven didn’t count that against me in the final grade, but it really took the joy out of production. I found out at the end of that class that FSU was going to be changing the camera, so hopefully you won’t have to deal with any of that!

Month 9 – Gaming Strategies & Motivation (Dr. Siegel)

This month was relatively uneventful (thank God!). I just had difficulties with the Atlantis subscription, but it got worked out.

Month 10 – Learning Management Systems (Dr. Reo McBride)

It was a little tricky getting the subscription to Schoology because I wasn’t working at a school, but Dr. Reo helped me get that all sorted out, and the course was a tech-trouble-free.

Month 11 – Media Asset Creation (Joe Bustillos) & Month 12 – Education Media & Project Development (Dr. Sue Bredard)

Months 11 & 12 were free from any real tech issues. It was nice to have a bit of a tech break and just be able to focus on finishing up all of the ARP and class work details. Thank God for FSO and thank God I made it through!

Finally, students will put all these parts together in a project-based final course that is built upon the action research model, and represents the year-long, practitioner-based research they explored in their work environment.

Career Paths

Whether it’s a high school class or corporate presentation, the educator’s role is vital in order to foster learning and growth. Employment in the Education Media Design & Technology field uses emergent technologies (movies, podcasts, videocasts, games, and more) to be implemented in the work environment.

For a K-12 Educator or College Professor, it’s all about opening the doors to a new possibilities of teaching. Instructors need the necessary Web 2.0 skills in order to educate students to develop and maintain the latest set of technology skills. Whether they develop an online lesson to drive home a math concept or use an animated game to teach geography, the one-way role of a teacher has changed. To support the teachers, Curriculum Developers assist in the design, development and execution of education. They must analyze, assess and make recommendation for the improvement of curriculum.

In the business world, Corporate Trainers specialize in the supervision and development of training employees. Trainers plan, organize, and implement training activities to ensure that employees meet necessary goals. They may provide communications and management training.
