If you're attending the MoCCA Festival this weekend I hope you'll make the time to stop by the Pronto Comics booth (table G5) on Sunday between 1PM and 2PM where I will be doing shop-talk, connecting with fellow creators, and promoting Pronto and myself.

I'm also planning to give away copies of a here-to-fore not-seen-on-the-web comic by me!

I've submitted a script for an upcoming @ProntoComics publication and thus earned a spot at the table. After 2, you'll be able to find me wandering the hall at the Lexington Armory, doing more journalistic stuff for The @LongandShortbox Of It. I will, unfortunately, be unable to attend or table for any length of time on Saturday. I know, it makes me sad too.

Always really enjoyed MoCCA Fest in the past, and I plan to again this year!

Again with the strange comics from this weird guy named Gorga! I make no promises about the quality of this comic. But it has been drawn on a paper straw wrapper. So there's that.

Being Santa is Tough

People say strange things to Santa Claus on the street:

"Don't give her nothin'. She's not been nice!"

"Yo, I heard Santa had a big dick, izat true?"

"Hey, if you're Santa where the ho ho hoes at?"

"I bet YOU'RE the real Santa, what's the name of the reindeer with the shiny red nose?"

"How you doing Santa? I think Santa needs a drink!"

"You're not the REAL Santa!"

"You need to eat some pasta, Santa! You don't look right."

Well that last one depends a lot on the type of Santa, doesn't it?
I need to gain weight to be a physically believable Santa apparently, which is weird because I used to be pretty large before the whole starving artist thing.

And what does Santa come up with to say? "Smart Toys has select toys 25% off! Smart way to make your holiday merrier! Ho ho ho!"

Being Santa Claus is no joke. Capitalism reigns. I wonder if I'll do it again next year...

It tells one story when my hands are straight and another one when crossed! Yeah, this totally makes up for the comic I missed for the month of June. Senia's little Sun and Moon are adorable, aren't they?

I like to think of these as separate comics, but that's really only because when this was ACTUALLY DRAWN ON MY HANDS, you couldn't look at both at once... Remember, there is no sequential art without sequence and there is no sequence of one!

The Little Things

Last night I was making a subway trip I've made a bajillion times now after 10 months living in New York City: a train on the N, R, W, Q line late night from somewhere downtown-ish to Times Square-42nd St, where I can catch the A line up to my Washington Heights apartment building.

But last night things didn't follow the usual pattern. Something went wrong. Blame comics. I missed my stop. I was far too engrossed in Darwyn Cooke's brilliant "DC: The New Frontier" #6. And that's a comic I have read before in a different format. So that speaks to Mr. Cooke's incredible abilities at storytelling. He had me enraptured... again.

But if I hadn't been forced to get up and above ground and walk back through Times Square to get to the A line, I never would have met these guys:
The California Boys:
Cory and Jared, two artists making it in NYC by offering to draw your caricature for free.

I believe that rhymes.

Anyway, they are quite talented, very friendly, and are literally giving the art away for free! How often do you see that?

They can be found on the Facebooks and tweeting on Twitter.

I try to keep thankful for the little things. Comics distracted and delayed me, but may have led me to fresher pastures of comics-related things. Who knows...

Now if I can only discipline myself into making more comics and doing less writing about comics, I think I'll be on a good track.

"Muji" - No Brand Branding

This company produces home goods. Shirts. Chairs. Ties. Sofas. Clocks. Tables. Socks. Appliances. CD Players. Bicycles. Cars?

Well, A car. They made a car with Nissan in 2001. This is their logo. Over to the right. There. Next to these words. Having trouble finding a logo in there? Oh yeah, that would be because they don't have one. They REFUSE to have one. They believe that consumer products should be designed to be simple but beautiful, built to work but to last, and as cheap as possible. They state that they keep their prices down by cutting out all unnecessary expenses. Everything from advertising to packaging to designing and maintaining a logo! Brilliant.

This is among the coolest things I've ever discovered. There's a Wikipedia.org entry on them. That's where I learned about them. (Where else?) They have a no-brand policy: "the company styles itself as a brandless brand". And here's their corporate website's message. The corporation was founded in 1980 and originates from Japan (Really, where else?) but they have stores all over the world, including here in Manhattan. They say the company, in the "deliberate pursuit of the pure and the ordinary - achieves the extraordinary". The automobile they designed with Nissan was built to be as fuel-efficient, low-emission, and low-price as possible using recycled materials.

No product has a logo directly on it, including the car. You can buy their pens, cars, and clothing without getting a constant reminder of who you owe for them and without being forced, unasked, to be free advertising. Get this: They produced a t-shirt with a rubber square smack-dab on the chest so a customer can design their own logo. That's awesome. That's progression. The brand of each and every single individual human being on the planet.

The sad thing is that in some ways they don't come through on their promises: a cursory glance at their website shows that about half of their products are ridiculously overpriced and about half are quite cheap. It would seem that generally you actually end up paying for the pleasure of living logo-free. And their name in a simple red font is on some of the packaging for products that would be discarded: a shrink-wrapped T-shirt, a glue bottle.

So what do YOU think? If all things are art is nothing art? If all companies' products have no distinguishing marks would we stop demanding quality from any specific one due to an inability to determine which one came from where? No brainwashing or the ultimate double-blind brainwashing? Is a simple white font on a dark red background still a logo in it's intended simplicity? Because I can't quite decide if Muji is a first step toward George Orwell's Big Brother state or a Utopia on Earth.

Winter in NYC is coming!

I was walking around downtown killing a bit of time a month or so back and took these photos of Rockefeller Center. I was surprised to see that the skating rink was up for the year, even though it was barely October. I remember sights like these from childhood visits here with my folks.

THIS stuff is part of the reason I moved to New York City.

My girlfriend Clare has promised to take me to all her favorite Christmas in New York sites. I'm looking forward to holding her close and walking through the snow.

Actually, Rockefeller Center always makes me think about the Museum of Television and Radio (now the Paley Center for Media). It's just about a block away.

I planned on going there ALL THE TIME when I was moving to NYC six months ago. And I haven't gone once. Probably partly because they of this weird change to the 'Paley Center' which makes it look and feel like it isn't the same place I went with my parents and had a great time when I was twelve.

They still seem to have great exhibits and a collection of television recordings. Their site is very smart anyway.

It's now devoted to all media (including comic-books apparently: there's a great, albeit basic, article about the mini-series "Watchmen"!) and as such should be even more interesting to me. I really should go.

That will be the beauty of winter! Clare will be off between semesters at Bard! I cannot wait! Come on Jack Frost! Nip at my nose! Where are ya!

Blogosphere, Prepare for Twice the Gorga!

Months ago now, as I was starting work at a comics store, a friend of mine who still attends the college I graduated from proposed a blog that he, myself, and my girlfriend would write and produce together called THE LONG AND SHORTBOX OF IT. A clever title referring to comic-book collectors' common propensity for keeping their comic-book collections in either shortboxes or longboxes, cheap cardboard boxes of just two fairly standard lengths available for purchase at most comic shops. I fell in love with the title at once, and have fallen even more in love with weekly blogging about comics since that auspicious beginning!

ON THE OTHER HAND: JUNE 25 2009

ON THE OTHER... OTHER HAND(ahem): The weekend of MoCCA.

I must have spent $40 or $50 on underground comics in two days. I don't know what I spent on food, but... probably less. [A little bit of reviews and commentary on that in my earlier post here.]

A year-and-a-half ago I declared I wasn't going to buy anymore comics... for a while. Of course, certain new comics increase in value pretty dramatically after their weekly release. So not buying them would be stupid. Because I'd have to buy them later.

And if that makes as much sense to you as it does to me then I know I'm not alone.

So I declared I would only buy the new comics I knew were going to increase in price... and then I decided I was going to buy only those issues and the issues I would have trouble finding later to save myself the headache. And then those issues and all the big crossover related issues because I started researching and writing a big paper on crossover events... then I...

Well, you get the picture. By the end of last summer I had broken pretty entirely. By the New York Comic-Con in February I went a little crazy and re-realized that I love comics and that was that and nothin' but nothin' could keep me down.

Now I'm trying to live on the cheap as a jobless recent college-grad. So I'm not buying as many comics as I was a few months ago. But I still buy the ones I think are gonna shoot up in value or rarity. It's... it's just logic, dammit! Don't judge me.

Update 7/27/2009: My life has given me an excuse for my fix and an excuse for self control at the same time. I am getting paid for it. I am now a comic shop employee myself! 30% off comics for me! Of course, buying comics directly from the store you work at is like giving them back your paycheck. I can't afford to do that right now. I need to make rent! But I'm going to appreciate the discount soon as well. Yesiree.

Subways and Superior Ways?

Three weeks in Manhattan already equals so many subway rides. I've lost count. Entirely.

I've also lost the thread in my own mind of the discussion I was having with myself as to whether I liked or hated the subway method of transit. Let's see if I can find it!

Honestly, I find the subway depressing. All straight lines and metal. People looking everywhere but at your eyes. Homeless people so slumped over on the benches they look like corpses. Stuffy, dank, and dark tunnels that stretch on into darkness. Maybe I've just had to take the thing AWAY from my girlfriend and that has colored my impression of it. I didn't hate it three weeks ago. Of course, I didn't love it either...

Well, at least it's fun. I recommend keeping your feet diagonally positioned so as to create a box-shape between them that allows you support for sudden shifts left-right and back-forward!

And it is cheaper by far than owning a car or taking taxis everywhere. Yeah, there's that too.
