When it comes to planning the future of education, few things matter more than figuring out what to do with artificial intelligence.

In 2025, College Board found that 84% of high school students admitted to using AI tools to some extent in their schoolwork. The same year, Education Week found that 61% of teachers admitted they did the same.

And at universities such as Oregon State, institutions are faced with trying to address the academic concerns that come with AI, all while staying on the cutting edge of modern technology.

At the end of the day, does AI benefit our education?

YES

By Orion Glover and the LBCC Civil Discourse Program

Imagine a student sitting in a math class, right on the edge of understanding a concept. They ask a question, but the explanation doesn’t quite click. Embarrassed to ask again, they stay silent and fall behind.

What that student needs is a tutor that is free from social pressures. Yes, students do use AI to cheat, but this casts a shadow on its real potential. While it should never be used to bypass coursework, AI is an incredible tool during the initial stages of learning.

I, Orion, am a first-year engineering student at Linn-Benton Community College, and I spend a lot of time just trying to understand difficult concepts from dense textbooks and lectures. Using AI, I can ask the same question in different ways. I can ask for diagrams, overviews, and step-by-step explanations, immediately testing my understanding with practice problems.

This one-on-one experience can help students learn with less stress. According to a 2026 study from Frontiers in Psychology, this low-pressure dynamic has been found especially helpful for students who are struggling the most to learn certain topics. Instead of checking out when it feels like there is no way forward, AI offers a path for students to stay engaged and find more meaning in their education.

AI also promises to enhance one of the most important parts of the college experience: large projects and research. Students with good ideas are often held up by technical skills they might not have, such as coding, or by impossible roadblocks such as analyzing millions of data points.

Facing this exact data issue, a student at the University of Southampton built an AI tool to scan millions of aerial images for ancient ruins, discovering 120 new historic sites across Scotland. Not only did she learn more herself, but AI unlocked a vision that had a positive impact on society.

When integrated well, AI can also help students achieve more in the classroom. Recently in Engineering 102 at LBCC, my teacher said AI could be used to elevate our Excel projects, on the condition that we could explain any part of the project during a graded presentation to the class.

The result? Students used their creativity to the fullest, taking their ideas and using AI to help learn how to achieve them. AI is uniquely helpful for this. Instead of searching 20 minutes for an outdated Excel video on a different operating system, you can upload a screenshot and get advice on how to move forward that is specific to your goals and situation.

With guidance on advanced functions, students were able to create Excel workbooks that looked more like a website than a spreadsheet, all while learning the advanced methods they were using because of how the teacher set up the project.

AI is a tool that can make it easier for anyone to learn in their own way and at their own speed. There have never been enough teachers to go around – until now.

NO

By Lili Daniel and the LBCC Civil Discourse Program

As a full-time student with multiple part-time jobs, I, Lili, often wish that there was some easy system or magic tool that I could use to make learning easier. AI tools are sold as that magic bullet. They make things easier on the surface level. But what are they doing to us long term?

AI models mathematically determine what words are most likely to be found together in order to generate human-like output. Because of this guesswork, they can produce inaccurate or misleading information. They can be biased, too, based on the data they are trained on – in one study, ChatGPT analogized “terrorist” with “Muslim” 23% of the time and “money” with “Jewish” 5% of the time. Why would we use these tools that we know can produce such problematic, inaccurate work?

Using tools can get work done faster with poorer learning outcomes. This is known as cognitive offloading – essentially, making something else do the tough thinking for you. This can be harmless, but if you become reliant on tools, you’ll be unable to perform the same tasks without them.

For example, I have used citation generators for years to avoid the tedious task of manually writing works cited pages. Now, despite having turned in countless “correct” works cited pages, I still wouldn’t be able to write a good one on my own.

The same thing appears to be happening with AI, but when it comes to even more tasks: writing emails, reading articles, making art. Though the output may appear acceptable, what’s going on in the brain is different.

AI is cognitive offloading to the max: a cheap and easy way to complete big tasks that should require skill building and learning.

Let’s use writing essays as an example. A recent study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that using AI while writing essays resulted in lower recall of essay contents, lower sense of ownership, and, scariest of all, lower brain connectivity. The study found that “AI tools, while valuable for supporting performance, may unintentionally hinder deep cognitive processing.”

Though the output might look the same, what’s going on in the brain is different. It worries me to imagine the long-term effects of chronic AI usage on the brain.

I understand that, from an academic perspective, many of us are focused on grades – and for good reason. But while an AI model can output something that looks like an essay, and may be graded as an essay, the student prompting AI misses out on the cognitive work and the learning.

If you want to really learn something, you need to struggle a little bit.

When I first got into art, I was really bad at it and I gave up many times. But I kept going back to it, practicing, and learning from experts. Now, I love most of the paintings that I make. But if I had asked someone else to make the art for me, I would have the paintings but would have lost out on what made them meaningful.

Learning is an art and an invaluable lifelong skill. I encourage students to embrace the hard parts of struggling, thinking for themselves, and creating their own work.

For many students in LBCC’s Adult Basic Skills programs, the classroom isn’t just a place to learn algebra or grammar, it’s a place for second chances.

While the traditional student path often follows a straight line from high school to college, the path through Adult Basic Skills is rarely linear, defined instead by resilience, late-night study sessions, and the courage to start over. The Adult Basic Skills department helps empower students to redefine their futures in academic success.

Adult Basic Skills at a Glance:

Programs: General Educational Development (GED) Preparation; GED Preparation in Spanish; English Language Acquisition (ELA); Adult Basic Education Pre-College Instruction (ABE)
Key Benefit: Skilled at addressing different learning styles and gaps in education and all programs are free (no tuition, books, or fees)
Where: Albany Campus, Takena Hall Main Office (T-232) and Corvallis Campus in the Benton Center
More information: www.linnbenton.edu/community/alt-paths/index.php

What separates ABS from LBCC’s regular education programs is that it has an approach that is geared primarily to adult learners of all ages. Adult students often balance full-time jobs, parenting, and financial challenges. ABS takes these all into account, helping students in prioritizing and being flexible between their real life and future.

But, what does the ABS department offer?

The department has four main programs: General Educational Development Preparation, GED Preparation in Spanish, English Language Acquisition, and Adult Basic Education Pre-College Instruction.

The GED program prepares students for the high school equivalent GED tests in math, language arts (reading and writing), social studies, and science. It offers students who never took or didn’t finish high school the chance to further their education, while also offering a path into main college courses. The GED program is offered in both English and Spanish. Students must be 16 years or older to take the English program, and 18 years or older for the Spanish program.

One student who is a GED graduate, Erika Driver, wrote of her success story and how she started the GED program: “I dropped out of school in the ninth grade and turned to substance abuse at 18. In 2023 I went to jail for six months on some serious charges; it was then that I decided to get my life together. In September of 2024 I got accepted into the SNAP Training and Employment Program (STEP) to start working on my GED.”

Driver continued, “I worked extremely hard for a year by studying, raising my hand in classes, and taking practice tests. Once I started testing I passed all of my tests within a three-month timeframe. I am proud of that because I’ve always been rather embarrassed about my comprehension in school. I’m 27 and this is one of my biggest achievements.”

For other students, the move to the GED program is a strategic choice rather than a fallback. Asher Richmond left high school due to health issues and found himself at a crossroads in 2022. Coming from a family of educators, he wasn’t ready to give up on his goals.

After seeing his uncle find success through the program, Richmond enrolled in the GED program.

“I looked into the program in the area because my uncle had gotten his,“ Richmond noted. While he admits he would have preferred to stay in high school, the GED offered the “on-paper skills“ and the “formality“ of a brush-up he needed to move forward.

Now that he’s finished the program, Richmond is looking toward a future in a “makerspace,” a communal hands-on environment often found in libraries where people learn technical crafts such as 3D printing and woodworking. He views the GED as the stepping stone that allowed him to pursue this path without being held back.

The ELA program is for adults who are permanent residents, immigrants, or refugees in the United States. This program helps students brush up on their reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. It is geared towards students who are looking for work in the United States who want to improve their job skills, or are interested in going to college to earn a career certificate or degree.

The ABE program is for students who already have a high school diploma or GED and who want to strengthen their skills before taking credit-level courses. ABE classes are offered in math basics, computer basics, and college and career readiness (offered in spring term only).

Classes are offered primarily in the evening, after the main campus falls quiet from the regular hustle of students during the daytime and are offered at the main Albany campus, Corvallis Benton Center, or online.

As for the instructors, they serve as facilitators and help coach the student through the course and help them with questions along the way, including overcoming “imposter syndrome,“ which often occurs with students returning to college.

The Adult Basic Skills department’s mission is often found in the “intangibles.” For the Department Chair and instructor for ELA Françoise Howard, who has spent over a decade specializing in ELA, the role is less about administrative oversight and more about acting as a “bridge” for those who feel the world has moved on without them.

“Many students come to us feeling like success is out of reach, or that they have somehow failed,” she explained. “Whether it’s a language barrier for an immigrant or a missed diploma for a GED student, they often arrive feeling ‘deficient.’ Our job isn’t just downloading information into their minds. It’s about taking out the ‘victim mentality’ and replacing it with confidence.”

The impact of the programs often manifests in the smallest, yet most significant, victories: a student finally understanding a complex English idiom they’ve heard at work for years, or a College and Career Readiness student finding the courage to email a professor to request a classroom observation.

“I’ve had a student tell me, ‘Teacher, I am a donkey,’“ she said. “I told them, ‘You can never say that about yourself.’ Seeing that self-deprecating noise go quiet is a delight.”

The Commuter met with Megan Christoph, the program specialist at the ABS office, to better understand the department and what students can do to get started.

You’ve been with the department since 2008. How has your role evolved from being an instructor to your current position?

I taught GED and English Language Acquisition for six years before pivoting to the administrative side. Now, I manage the database that supports the federal grant – specifically the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act – which pays for the bulk of our programs here. I handle onboarding, orientation, and progress testing to ensure our students are meeting their goals. Because we are a small department, I also handle registration and answer questions for walk-ins and students just trying to find their footing.

How many students are currently utilizing these programs?

We have about 220 students registered this spring. It’s a very dedicated group. Our ELA students have incredible retention. They are often thrilled to learn that these classes are now free, which wasn’t always the case.

We see a bit more attrition in the English GED program simply because “life is big.” Our students are often in their 40s with children and jobs; balancing science, social studies, and math is a major commitment.

The staff supporting these 220 students is relatively small. Who is behind the scenes?

We have one contracted faculty member and six adjunct instructors; three for GED and three for ELA. We also have two part-time non-contracted bilingual classified staff in addition to my position. Our faculty and staff have been with the department for a long time and are incredibly committed, despite having to scale back from locations in Albany and Corvallis. We also have a bilingual student navigator, Leo Maldonado, who is vital in helping students transition to college programs.

What does success look like for an ABS student in these programs?

It’s surprisingly high. We are meeting all our federal metrics, but the real success is in the transition data. When I look up our GED graduates, a large number of them are currently taking credit classes at LBCC. Even though the college no longer offers the 12-credit tuition waiver for GED grads that it used to, students are still pushing forward. They aren’t always looking for a four-year degree at a university, as many are in their 40s and want a certificate or an associate degree so they can increase their earnings and support their families immediately.

For someone looking to start this path, what are their first steps?

For GED and ELA, students apply through LBCC using an application specifically for Adult Basic Skills. They then go through an orientation and testing process.

For our Pre-College Instruction (ABE), students apply as credit students and work with a navigator. We offer math basics, computer basics, and a College and Career Readiness course. These are designed to help students gain confidence and get comfortable with tools such as Canvas before they start credit-level classes.

Torey Arnold, a part-time biology instructor at LBCC, now has a PhD in biology. He remembers the exact moment he pulled into his community college parking lot for the first time. “I remember thinking, this is going to change my life,” Arnold said.

Arnold’s path was born out of a difficult high school experience defined by bullying and a “decimated” sense of self-worth. He dropped out at 16, but an inner curiosity about the molecular world kept him moving.

“I really liked science … I was fascinated with how cells work,” he recalled. “I knew if I wanted to be a biologist, I had to take the GED to go to college.”

After taking the test in Michigan and passing with “college-level marks,” Arnold began a 13-year trek through higher education: four years for an associate degree, three for a bachelor’s, and six for his PhD. Arnold noted that the GED felt like a more significant personal milestone than his doctorate.

“Getting the GED, I felt more accomplished in that than getting the PhD,” Arnold recalled. “The amount of dopamine hit I got from the GED … it was fuel to the fire. It showed me that I was capable, worthwhile, and valued.”

Today, as a teacher and biologist, Arnold’s advice to students starting the programs is to ignore the “stigma” and focus on their own timeline. “It doesn’t matter how long it takes. It’s not a race,” he said. “Whatever it is you want to do, that’s got to be the driving motivation. Just get into the pool a little bit and see if it feels right.”

On May 7 LBCC had a major outage of the Canvas learning platform. Canvas was down for eight hours from about 1:30 to 9:30 p.m., disrupting many afternoon classes and cutting students off from their assignments and midterms.

Even several weeks later, students and staff might have some concerns about how this cyberattack affected the college and students’ private information. Although the college prepares as best it can, with so many digital tools in use by the college, incidents similar to this one are bound to happen again.

On April 25, Instructure, the company that owns and operates the Canvas learning platform, had a data breach in which hackers accessed Canvas systems and stole user data, such as student X-numbers, email addresses and enrollment status. On May 1, Instructure disclosed this breach in a public incident report, and the next day, they updated the report, stating they “believe the incident has been contained” and closing the report four days later.

On May 7, however, the login page for Canvas was replaced by the same hackers with a message threatening to release the stolen information from a list of affected schools unless a ransom was paid by May 12. LBCC was on that list of colleges; however, as stated by a separate incident report by Instructure, most information that was stolen by the hackers is considered “directory” or public information that can be requested of the institution without prior notice or consent. This information specifically was “usernames, email addresses, course names, enrollment information and (Canvas) messages.” The canvas messages were the only nondirectory information that was leaked and therefore posed the most concern, according to the college.

The hackers who perpetrated the hack purported to be part of a group that calls itself “ShinyHunters.” The group is a known criminal extortion group that primarily funds itself through information brokerage – buying and selling information. The group has been in operation since 2019 and has claimed responsibility for several high-profile data breaches, such as at Ticketmaster and Google. They are primarily known for sophisticated use of phishing and other attacks.

The Commuter spoke with Craig Huseby, LBCC’s chief information officer, to answer questions about how the hack affected students and what the school is doing in response. In an email sent to students and staff on May 12, Huseby noted that Instructure doesn’t believe there will be a release of any personal user information.

Instructure later confirmed in a webinar that they paid the ransom. Huseby explained that there is a reputational aspect at play for the hackers; taking the ransom and not releasing the information makes businesses more likely to pay the ransom in the future.

LBCC will not be taking any direct actions in response to the incident, as none of LBCC’s systems were directly compromised, Huseby said. While the school takes security breaches seriously, and goes to great lengths to ensure its partners are upholding security policies, this is not the only system that LBCC uses that has been breached. Further, due to the large number of different systems that the school uses the likelihood that none of them experience a breach at any point is very low.

“Nobody sees the 99 times you got it right, they only see the one time you got it wrong,” he said.

As far as specific recommendations for students, Huseby stressed three major points:

First, do not reuse your passwords, especially for key accounts such as banks and schools. In his words, “Don’t, don’t, don’t.”

Second, change your passwords about once a year for important accounts.

Third, be wary of phishing emails. Be skeptical of any emails from addresses you don’t recognize, or that try to pressure you into giving away any personal information.

Instructure recommended many of the same things in their incident report, with an additional recommendation to trust your instincts. If something feels off, it likely is, and it is much easier to verify a suspect email with LBCC’s tech support department than it is to recover your information after it has been stolen. Contact them at student.techsupport@linnbenton.edu or call 541-917-4630 or text 541-704-7001.

Overall, this incident reminds users that we entrust organizations with a lot of personal information, and things happen. It’s a question of if, not when. Students and others must remain cognizant of their own digital security as well.
