Fun set by a local band from Brooklyn that a friend of mine manages...I find them very entertaining but what really stands out is how fully-formed they are...songs, arrangements, stage presence...the whole deal. I could see them right now as a very strong support act in a theatre or arena...any booking agents listening?

McCoy Tyner Trio with special guest Gary Bartz at the Blue Note, New York, NY, February 25, 2009.

Caught both sets. The early show was a little less focused and fiery. The drummer, Eric Gravatt, in particular, was a little out of sync. McCoy and Bartz were still terrific, it just wasn't spot on. They covered some ground, though..."Mellow Minor", "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit", Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone", "Fly With the Wind" (joined by McCoy's big band tuba player Howard Johnson...), "Blues on the Corner", etc.

The late show got deep, though...As I sit here I am drawing a complete and total blank as to what they opened with...Was it a Coltrane number...? Damn...There goes that last brain cell...Anyway, when they launched into "Sama Layuca", everyone stepped it up. McCoy played a couple of out solos, the drums and bass took at least one or two solos each but Bartz...holy cow...all I can tell you is that he had something to say and he said it!

I will update this post if and as I come across reviews, photos or recordings...

A night of firsts: never saw Mr. Bennett, never been to the Apollo, never ate at Sylvia's....All cool things to check off the list...

The show started a few minutes past eight with a 30 - 40 minute set by the Count Basie Orchestra. The Orchestra is now led by long-time band member Bill Hughes, who noted that he joined the band in 1956...they warmed up the room with a strong set of swing and with no real break to speak of (save for a couple of musicians entering and exiting their positions) Tony Bennett was introduced. I did not keep notes but he covered quite a bit of ground. For Once in My Life, The Best is Yet to Come, My Favorite Things, and of course....I Left My Heart in San Francisco. All told, about 60 - 70 minutes of Tony. The only tune missing for me was his take on Winter Wonderland, which appears on both of his Christmas records - this year's release with the Basie Orchestra and his last one, from 1968!

Cool side note: on the way in we were all handed laminates with a code on back to download a track from the show after Dec 23...

There was a fun post-show reception at Sylvia's, the classic soul food spot on Lenox Ave. You know its a party when Charlie Rangel's in the house...

Everest...moderately interesting rootsy kinda band. Probably great in a bar...but Wilco...Fucking Wilco, man, how do they keep getting better? It is ridiculous. I have not seen them in a couple of years and I tell you, they were loud, crystal clear, and adventurous. I remember after seeing them for the first time 8 or 9 years ago I sent an email to my friends calling Wilco a cross between The Band and the Bay City Rollers. You might be able to add Pink Floyd to that list. Damn...I nominate them for Best Band in the World right now...Tweedy is unreal. I hope we're still seeing them 20 years from now. Impossible Germany and Spiders (Kidsmoke) were the highlights for me...

Neil's band for this tour is "His Electric Band": Ben Keith, Rick Rosas, Ralph Molina, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young. Managed to scrounge a video from the show on offa YouTube:

Neil's set was heavy up on new songs...a lot of singing about green energy and recycling...idealistic lyrics, earnestly delivered, that's Neil, right? Cortez and Cinnamon Girl were worth the price of admission alone, though...Oh yeah, and Cowgirl in the Sand and Neil introducing Pegi as the "Unknown Legend" (which was beautifully played in its own right...). Let's get discussion of the line-up out of the way first:

McCoy Tyner, piano

McCoy Tyner is my favorite living musician, jazz or otherwise. For over a year I have been on an uber-nerd quest to gather every recorded note of his I can find. It is an on-going project, something I think and hope will take years to finish. You can follow the progress with these links:

Anyway, McCoy is in the midst of a run of shows at the Blue Note to mark his 70th birthday and to promote his new record, Guitar. Two sets and a different special guest each night. The guests include Ribot, Joe Lavano, Ravi Coltrane and Bill Frisell. I would go every night if I could but I can't so the Ribot night was a no-brainer for me. Ribot is the Forrest Gump of musicians...every time I get into an artist, Ribot shows up as a collaborator or sideman...

McCoy covered so much ground in the Ribot sets...He hit some of his own best compositions, nodded to the Msaters (Coltrane, Monk and Duke), and displayed a phenomenal level of musicianship on what is arguably one of the most physically demanding instruments to play well in old age.

McCoy still has the intense left hand he is known for as well as the nimble right. For the first set we sat just over his right shoulder and had a great view (his hands were reflected in the finish of the polished Steinway which was a treat as well)...The set started with his own Sama Layuca (from the album of the same name) and ended about 70 minutes later with Trane's Moment's Notice. In between, Ribot ripped some wild solos (after the second set I told him he doesn't have a cliche in his body and he replied, "well, I'm trying to learn some") Gary Bartz proved his relevance and Savion Glover...well...he tap danced...when it worked (and it often did) there was a tremendous interplay with the other players. When it didn't, he seemed oblivious to the dynamics and stomped through their playing. My biggest complaint with the set was not his presence, but the fact that the board he tapped on was mic'ed and way too prominent in the mix. The taps were going to ring out, they did not need to be amplified...

For the second set, which opened with an absolutely smoking take on McCoy's Fly With the Wind (a good 10 - 15 minute airing), Savion was only present for two songs and seemed to fit in much better. This set was much more fiery and intense as well. McCoy and the rest of the band were clearly loosened up.

70 is young these days but McCoy will not be around forever. I can't see how he can continue to play at this level much longer...though he takes his personal care very seriously, he even adheres to a special diet which he discusses here so who knows...the point is, see McCoy while you can. As the last living member of the classic John Coltrane quartet he is an important figure in jazz history. It is amazing, he was only 27 when his time with Trane came to an end. he could have never worked again and been a jazz giant. But he kept going and became an innovator in spiritual jazz, Latin, big band, in his use of strings and other instrumentation...he avoided embarrassing fusion (ignore the record with Santana from the 80s, we all make mistakes)...played with the cream of the horn players, from Pharoah, to Joe Henderson, Gary Bartz, Azar Lawrence, to Joe Lovano today...The guy is the shit!

Afternoon: Eagles vs Falcons in the "President's Club Suite" at Lincoln Financial Field...that night, The Who across the street at the Wachovia Center...(and the World Series was being played in the same complex that night as well!)....

So I had the opportunity to catch this movie at a special IMAX screening whilst in L.A. for a business trip and had to go...I caught the shows that were filmed for this movie back in the fall of 2006 and wrote then that I should never go see the Stones again, that they could never be as good...I have managed to only see them once since (so far)!

If you are a Stones fan and plan to see this flick, go while it is playing in an IMAX. The sound and cinematography are stunning. Rollingstones.com has all of the info you need...

Don't go looking for a penetrating documentary...but man, what a concert film...

Jefferson Starship "Surrealistic Omnibus" at B.B. Kings in New York, NY, September 9, 2007.

I love going to see these guys - and haven't been in like ten years...Kantner starting touring again in the early '90s performing material from all different eras of his career: folk songs and sea chanteys, a wealth of stuff from the Airplane catalog, a lot of the songs from the early Jefferson Starship era and, most enjoyable to me, gems from the records put out under his and Grace's names.

This is not the Jefferson Starship you know and hate. Their early material was like an updated version of the Airplane for the 70s - incredible songwriting, amazing line-ups, etc.

The ticket price included a soundboard recording of the show which they are sending out soon. Stay tuned for the update...

Opening night, The Police Tour...the setlist is relentless, just one hit after another. The band had a very high energy level, as you might guess...Playing to a full room of 18 - 20,000 people took them to a different level than the few thousand at dress rehearsal the night before.

Sting's voice is strong and Stewart's drumming is over the top...Here is a video EPK the tour issued containing rehearsal footage, clips from the show, fan reactions and interview segments with the band...Not much more to say today...need to head off to the airport shortly for the flight back to NYC...

So tonight was the dress rehearsal show, which The Police opened to members of their fan club...I am not going to post the setlist yet, it is too fun to spoil before tonight's tour opening show. The band looks and sounds great. There is a pretty extensive discussion about the show going on here, on the band's official site.

I was in the ninth row, just off the left hand side of the row, which put me in front of Sting. I had a great vantage point for the stage and sound...

Friars Club Soupy Sales Tribute - New York, NY - 2007-03-26

Tonight I attended the 81st birthday party for Soupy Salesat the Friar's Club here in New York City.

I know, that doesn't really have anything to do with music (unless you are willing to count his sons Hunt and Tony, who played with Bowiein Tin Machineand Iggy on Lust for Life).

Anyway, it was a blast. The highlight was, if you can believe it, about 10 minutes of Larry Storch. The guy is 84 and funny as all hell. Raunchy, too. All of those old Catskill's-era Jewish comics are the best. Ken Burns needs to do 5 - 10 hours on that time and those people.

And the Friar's Club "Monastery" - holy cow. It was my first time there and man, what a joint. The photos on the walls and the names on various placques...Ali, Sinatra, Henny Youngman...There's even a Milton Berle Room!

Thanks to my buddy, Friar Eddie, for a real treat of a night...

As I sat in my hotel room waiting to leave for the Grammys, I turned on CNN...call it mid-afternoon, Pacific time...the top three stories were:

No commentary from me on the list, just amazement at how well-received the whole thing was at the time...I guess you have to take into account the fact that they really walked away at the total top of their success...

And if the recent setlists are any indication, it looks to be an epic night...dug this up from the message board on his site - it is the running order from about a week ago in Boston...

I have heard a lot of mixed things about his shows - everything from "they are sublime" to "kinda sad - he gets confused"...If you've seen him, let me know. No matter what, I am looking forward to Pet Sounds in its entirety...

Have you ever:

lost someone you love?
been betrayed by someone you trusted?
been so ill-at-ease that you couldn't leave your bed?

Of course you have, but all at once?

Brian Wilson has, and the fact that he can still get on a stage, in front of people, and sing the way he does and preach a message of love and positivity the way he does is nothing short of astounding.

I went to this with such low expectations, having been counseled that this was the only way to not be disappointed. But the will, dignity and soul I saw on display from that man had me literally choking back tears more than once, dreading that the people I was with were going to see my eyes watered up from a concert.

Al Jardine, an original Beach Boy, joined Brian for most of the show and his voice added so much. All night I had obsessive thoughts over and over about all they, and especially Brian, had been through. The catalog of heartbreak is staggering: abusive father, creative torment, the pressure of success, the drugs, the mental collapse, the exploitation by friends, family and advisors, the death of brothers...and I thought more than once about my own tragedies, heartbreaks and disappointments and how my life has been shaped by these events. Seeing his grace makes me ashamed now to give in to cynicism, irony and self-pity.

There were some stellar musical highlights in the almost 3-hour program: "Add Some Music" and "Do You Wanna Dance" were terrific. "And Then She Kissed Me" and "Sail On Sailor"...and what goes through his mind when he sings "In My Room"? To say nothing of the complete Pet Sounds...he was genuinely embarrassed by the standing ovation he received after "God Only Knows".

Brian Wilson is the epitome of cool. Believe it.

The Rolling Stones played the Beacon Theatre here in New York, Sunday, Oct 30 and tonight, Nov 1. The shows were filmed for a movie being put together by Martin Scorsese.

I caught both shows and now need to have the discipline to never go see them again, though I said that after the Tower Theatre show in Philly on the LICKS tour, too!

I have seen the Stones more times than I can count and I am just not convinced it can ever get any better than these shows, especially tonight's. So many highlights - the music, the set, the people-watching, Keith & Mick's interplay, Ronnie's guitar-playing. Wow.

I'm never ashamed to go out for some big dumb rock, and it doesn't get bigger or dumber than Kiss. I saw Paul Stanley twice on the other solo tour he did in 1989...those shows were definitely better, but mainly because he didn't have a record to push at the time so there were no new songs to sit through, it was all hits. This was a fun night, though, with Paul dusting off some Kiss gems. The photo here says "Atlanta" but it was the same set here in NYC.

The crowd was old-school, with lots of old dudes and quite a few who reminded me of comic book store guy from the Simpsons...Is that what I've become? Is that what I've always been?!

.McCoy Tyner Trio with Pharoah Sanders at the Blue Note, New York, NY, September 21, 2006

I waited years to see this show. I have passed up or missed so many chances to see McCoy and/or Pharoah, but this series of shows at the Blue Note in honor of Coltrane's 80th birthday got me off the couch.

Only myabe 5 pieces stretched over a roughly 60-minute set but their version of "Afro Blue" was worth the (steep) price of admission all by itself. It was so exciting to hear McCoy's sound on the piano in person after years of listening to him on record. And Pharoah, well he definitely aired it out. Some really great playing. And effortless...man.

Charnett Moffett was on bass. He was the bass player on one of my all-time favorite records, which I recommend to anyone who likes loud music, Sonny Sharrock's Ask the Ages. The drummer, Eric Kamau Gravatt, was the weakest link, I thought. He was a little stiff and seemed distracted by his gear, constantly fiddling and tweaking.

They are at the Blue Note until Sunday, go if you can.
