New exhibition at the Gallery in Elizabeth House

After our successful opening exhibition featuring a galaxy of local artists we have a new show at the recently-opened Gallery at Elizabeth House (on Station Hill, Cookham) starting this Sunday, by talented artist Gail Dorrington. Gail lives locally: she studied for a degree in graphic design and illustration at the prestigious Central School of Art in London and has worked as a book designer and illustrator. Her new show features vibrant paintings in acrylic, water colour and coloured pencil. Titled Here and There it's inspired by travel and local scenes and personalities including her Zimbabwe portraits and Reflections on the Thames series. All the works are for sale (Christmas is a'coming) and Elizabeth House gets a commission from every sale.

Birds...in Holy Trinity Church!

Brian Clews, well known local ornithologist and author of ‘Birds in the Village’, has kindly agreed to give an illustrated talk about Birds in the winter. Main species, how can we help them and how can we enjoy their elegance and ingenuity? All will be revealed by Brian in the church on Tuesday 19th January starting 7.30 pm with a glass of wine. Tickets (suggested donation £10 to the Holy Trinity Restoration Fund) from Jim Tattersall (01628) 633907 or David Harrold 483058 or Stationery Depot or Parish Office. Come and join us for a fascinating evening!

Coffee Rota 

I shall shortly be preparing the new Rota for 2010 and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who, despite the later time, cheerfully makes coffee and tea for after the 11 a.m. service.    I am sure you will all agree, judging by the number of people who still come over to the Parish Centre, it has been very worthwhile, particularly appreciated by those who perhaps live on their own who can catch up and chat with friends, meet new members of the congregation and I feel it gives our Ministry Team the chance to meet up with us all.  If there is anyone out there, male or female, who feels they could and would like to be part of this important ministry and would like to know more, please contact me on 528701.   If, however, anyone would like their names taken off the Rota could they also please let me know? Trip to the National 

There is a theatre trip organised to the National Theatre London on Sat Jan 16th to see 'Nation'. This is an adaption of a Terry Pratchett novel which has had good reviews. I have been writing some new stories. Copies are available at the back of church today. Four of the stories are based on the gospel readings for the four Sundays of Advent this year and one is based on the Christmas story. There is a Children’s Society collecting box by the books as they cost a £2.50 donation to this important charity. The aim of the stories is to help us think around well known events described in the gospels. Hopefully the stories will be interesting and enjoyable for everyone who is interested in exploring the gospels – why not give one or two away as a presents? Fr. Michael

This Evening (13th December)

Lots of people look forward to Christmas and expect to relax and have lots of fun. However we always remember that there are some for whom Christmas will be difficult, the lonely, the sick and the recently bereaved. At our annual service called ‘Rumours of Christmas’ we remember this and recall that at the heart of the Christmas story is the truth that God came to be with us, not just in times of joy but also in times of sadness and difficulty. Come and join in this beautiful service at Holy Trinity at 1830hrs and offer your prayers especially for those who are not looking forward to Christmas this year. (With music and readings led by the Girls' Choir) 

Book Club

Healing Eucharist

Our monthly Healing Eucharist is at Holy Trinity on Monday evening at 1930hrs. This is for everyone who feels in need of prayer or would like to pray for others. It is a quiet and reflective service which lasts about 40 minutes – all are welcome.

Mums and Toddlers

Some of you will know that a very popular Mum’s and Toddlers group runs at the Parish Centre every Thursday morning. We (Holy Trinity and St John the Baptist’s) have been asked if we would like to become more involved in running this group. I believe, in the dim and distant past, it started out as a church group but over the years it has lost contact a bit with the church. This is a great opportunity for us, not only to help provide support for young parents and children in our community, but also, as the church, to be a more visible presence in their lives. It would be great to have young parents involved but also to have some older people involved on a regular basis to help practically and to offer friendship and support at the weekly gatherings. We now know that there are half a dozen mum’s who are willing to form a small committee to run the group but in order for it to have a genuine church connection we need a few church people to be involved as well. There is a meeting in the Parish Centre to explore how we might be able to be involved at 12.30pm on Tuesday 8th December (after Trinity Nippers). If you would like to know more and think you may have something to contribute, even on an occasional basis, please come along.

Christmas at Whitechapel

The Mission is looking for volunteers to help with breakfast on Sunday 27 December - would you be free? SOUL SPACE

This Monday’s Soul Space (30 November) will be a meditation on the Annunciation and Visitation. As these are part of the Joyous Mysteries we will pray the rosary, and also use silence and poems for our reflection. It will last from 8 pm to 9pm. All welcome.

Tomorrow, Monday at 14.45. Celebrating Gerry’s Life here at Holy Trinity. (There will have previously been a Family ONLY service at the Crematorium). 

COOKHAM TOWER  

A Tribute to Gerry Ayre by Andrew McKerlie, Former Ringing Master at HTC.  

Gerry Ayre first ventured up the tower at Cookham over 30 years ago, just a week or so before I had done the same.  There was early competitiveness between us as our skills progressed under the patient tuition of then Tower Captain, Tom Tocock, but Gerry always joked that youth was on my side whenever he struggled when attempting a new ringing method during those early practices.  In fact of course Gerry became a skilled and valued regular member of the band - as proven by his achievements ringing in many successful quarter peal attempts and a full three hour peal on the Cookham bells.   

The ringers will also be forever in debited to Gerry's skills further up the tower stairs in the bell chamber itself.  Whether it was a broken 'stay', more snapped ropes to be spliced or fixing the clock chiming mechanism, Gerry was always on hand to ensure that the bells were always fit for ringing for Tuesday practice and Sunday mornings.  In his role as Steeplekeeper for over 25 years, we lost count of the number of his perfect 'splices'  that added many months more service to bell ropes that would otherwise had to have been expensively replaced.  

Gerry played an important and active part in the project to refurbish and augment Cookhams ring from eight to ten bells in 2006, so it was a moving moment to see the joy and emotion he clearly felt to have managed the 32 tower steps in early September to thank us personally when we rang all 10 of those bells for his daughter's wedding.  That visit would sadly turn out to be the last time he managed the climb up to the ringing chamber.  Tomorrow (Monday 30th November) the Cookham ringers will be proudly ringing all 10 bells once more, but this time for the Thanksgiving service to celebrate Gerry's life - and in particular as our tribute to his many years of dedication to the tower.    

Two Quarter Peals have also been rung at Cookham, dedicated to Gerry.

The History of Christ the King Sunday

The earliest Christians identified Jesus with the predicted Messiah of the Jews. The Jewish word "messiah," and the Greek word "Christ," both mean "anointed one," and came to refer to the expected king who would deliver Israel from the hands of the Romans. Christians believe that Jesus is this expected Messiah. Unlike the messiah most Jews expected, Jesus came to free all people, Jew and Gentile, and he did not come to free them from the Romans, but from sin and death. Thus the king of the Jews, and of the cosmos, does not rule over a kingdom of this world.

Christians have long celebrated Jesus as Christ, and his reign as King is celebrated to some degree in Advent (when Christians wait for his second coming in glory), Christmas (when "born this day is the King of the Jews"), Holy Week (when Christ is the Crucified King), Easter (when Jesus is resurrected in power and glory), and the Ascension (when Jesus returns to the glory he had with the Father before the world was created). However, Pius XI wanted to specifically commemorate Christ as king, and instituted the feast in the Western calendar in 1925.

In the 21st century many Western Christians, Catholic and Protestant, celebrate Christ the King Sunday, including Anglicans and Lutherans. Unfortunately, in some mainline Protestant churches, "king" language is not popular, and the feast is downplayed. However, in a chaotic and unjust world that seems to scorn any kind of authority, many Christians proudly celebrate Christ the King Sunday, where the loving and merciful - and just - king of the universe is praised and glorified.

Advent Carol Service by Candlelight. A service of Advent Hymns, readings, choir carols and prayers (Men and Boys’choir).

The Christmas workshop is on 5th December from 10 am to 12 noon and costs £5 per child, children under 5 should be accompanied by an adult. Registration forms are available at the back of the Church and in the Parish Office. Book early because places are limited.

Lucy who is running the Christmas workshop on 5th Dec. has made a request for empty jam jars (to make into coloured tea light holders). Please leave at back of church in coming few weeks either Lucy or Kate will collect them.

Would you like some floral inspiration for your Christmas table?  Then do not miss Sue and Lucy Barton’s demonstration evening on Thursday, 19th November at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre.  Those who have attended before will know that tickets are limited to 65 in order to accommodate everyone comfortably so book early! Tickets can be booked through Bernadette Clark (01628 530047 evenings) for £12.50, ticket price to include a glass of wine and a mince pie! There will also be an opportunity to win one or two of the arrangements. Proceeds to help fund the Christmas decoration of our church.    

STAMPS!

Throughout the remainder of November and December we will be collecting used postage stamps and passing them on to OXFAM. Please leave them in the basket at the back of church. 

Thanksgiving Service

Monday 30 November at 14.45. Following the sad death of Gerry Ayre, the family  would like you all to know that there will be a Thanksgiving Service for the Gerry’s Life here at Holy Trinity. (There will have previously been a Family ONLY service at the Crematorium).

A public meeting on Tuesday 10th November 7.30-9.30pm at St Edward’s Catholic Church, 44 Alma Road, Windsor SL4 3HJ.  This public meeting arranged by CAFOD Portsmouth is partly a chance to thank the many supporters in local parishes and schools.  But its wider purpose is to give anyone in the area up-to-date knowledge and news of campaigning before the crucial Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. You’ll have the views of two expert lead speakers.  Martin Brown of CAFOD Portsmouth Office saw the effects of global warming at first hand in villages, schools and communities in Bangla Desh earlier this year – and he’ll review campaigning worldwide activities.  Rev Professor Ian James from the School of Meteorology & Physics, University of Reading, is well-known as one of the best informed speakers around on the realities of climate change - and is also Environmental Advisor for the Diocese of Oxford.  The evening is free, and everyone is welcome. The United Churches of Maidenhead are once again trying to put together teams of people to assist with the serving of Christmas Lunch to those who are lonely and less fortunate.  All aspects of help are needed. Coffee Morning to Fund Cycle Ride

Sue Madelin and Tess Gray are holding a coffee morning on Friday November 13th (that's a week on Friday!) in order to raise funds for our London to Paris Cycle Ride.  We'd love for you to come and join us at Tess's house - Lee Cottage, School Lane, Cookham - between 10am and 12.30. Entry is £5 for adults and 50p for children - drink as much tea or coffee and eat as many slices of cake, cookies and muffins as you'd like!  We'll also have a selection of beautiful handmade jewellery and greetings cards on sale so you might even be able to pick up an early Christmas gift whilst you're at it! All proceeds will be going towards our fundraising target of £2,600 in aid of The Institute of Cancer Research and the more the merrier, so feel free to bring your friends along to join in the fun. Let me know if you're able to come so I know how many cakes to bake!

Healing Eucharist

God gave us Autumn

Trees are turning colour and displaying a beautiful range of colours and tints but as the wind blows and the frosts approach the leaves fall and plants get ready to sleep through the winter ( if only we could!) Can anyone please help in the autumn tidy up of the churchyard and Parish centre garden? Leaves to be raked, paths to be cleared, edges to be trimmed and trees to be pruned. Even 10 minutes would help. Speak to Colin after the 11am service or contact him on 0776 7072425 or colincaunter@aol.com

Mums and Toddlers

Some of you will know that a very popular Mum’s and Toddlers group runs at the Parish Centre every Thursday morning. We (Holy Trinity and St John the Baptist’s) have been asked if we would like to become more involved in running this group. I believe, in the dim and distant past, it started out as a church group but over the years it has lost contact a bit with the church. This is a great opportunity for us, not only to help provide support for young parents and children in our community, but also, as the church, to be a more visible presence in their lives. It would be great to have young parents involved but also to have some older people involved on a regular basis to help practically and to offer friendship and support at the weekly gatherings. There is a meeting in the Parish Centre to explore how we might be able to contribute at 12.30pm on Tuesday 3rd November (after Trinity Nippers). If you would like to know more and think you may have something to offer please come along.

The United Churches of Maidenhead are once again trying to put together teams of people to assist with the serving of Christmas Lunch to those who are lonely and less fortunate.  All aspects of help are needed. To help with the planning the names of volunteers would like to be known ASAP. If you think you will be able to help in whatever capacity. Please give your name to Margaret Hackett (532230)

We have invited all the families we have taken funerals for over the last two years and already have a list of their loved ones who have died. A Question of Dignity

Please note that on October 29th in conjunction with the Holy Trinity Peace and Justice Committee there will be a talk by an Amnesty speaker on the subject of human dignity and what we can do to support it here and around the world.  More details from Mike Copland on 01628 630375.

Soul Space

8pm at Holy Trinity on Monday 26th October. This is our monthly opportunity to share in worship where there is more silence than words. This week we will be reflecting on some passages from scripture and some poetry on the theme of catching glimpses of God. All welcome.

Old Spectacles...

Wanted for World Vision Overseas -During the month of OCTOBER we are running a campaign to collect as many pairs of unwanted spectacles as possible to be used by World Vision Overseas in developing countries. The Glasses need to be in good working order and can be placed in the labeled basket at the back of the church. Please ask friends, family and neighbours also, as every pair will make a huge difference to the quality of someone's life. Spectacle cases will not be needed, thank you.
