As another Labor Day approaches I am reminded of two... no three things. 1) Summer is almost over. Labor Day kind of officially marks the end of the summer season. Not to worry... at the beach there is always something to do. September has still many fun activities at the beach, October has Sea Witch Festival & Apple Scrapple in Bridgeville, November has Punkin Chunkin, the Rehoboth Film Festival, and then Holiday Season shopping is upon us. I saw an interesting stat today that showed OC MD's weekend visitors as compared to Rehoboth and Dewey's. In the month of July and August, OC packs them in... of course the DE Beaches do too, but what was so amazing to me... was the steady level of tourism that continually comes into the DE Beaches through Sept and Oct as compared to OC, where it virtually drops off. I'm getting away from my post...

2) Labor Day marks another birth day... I hit the big 36 this year. 36 Wow. Am I really 36? Some times I feel 36... but mostly I feel 28... no maybe 30. Alright, 32. :)

3) Kids start school next week. It's over... no more summer vacation. Time to get up early, and get to school... drop offs - pick ups - I am not looking forward to that. But then again... with the start of the new school year, I start spending more time in Dover DE. A new position and new territory for me to explore. So... here's a pack of Bella's Cookies for the End of Summer. PS - I'll take the new natural and organic Key Lime White Chocolates... "sublime".

One of the more intriguing articles I've read lately... A pack of Bella's Cookies goes to the cows. Moooooo

Urine Luck! Pee May Be the Fuel of the Future

Scientists at Ohio University have stumbled on a major break-through that could be the key to bringing hydrogen fuel cells into wide-spread use. Scientists discovered that placing a nickel-based electrode in a pool of urine and applying a small electrical current produces hydrogen gas. "One cow can provide enough energy to supply hot water for 19 houses," Ohio University professor Gerardine Botte said of the discovery. The scientists are hoping to make commercial version of the technology available by next year.

Dawn patrol showed up to surf today, and found nothing. Wrong break, little to no swell, makes everyone stand on the beach and talk about whether or not anyone wants to go out. My friend John also brought his sea kayaks, so we went for a morning paddle instead. Paddling on the ocean might be one of the more serene things you can do. The ocean, the quietness, the aquatic life you see... The quietness. If you've never gone, try it some time. Tons of jellyfish in the water today. Big, small, long tentacles, short ones... They were beautiful though. Just doing their thing, floating around. So we kayaked, then came back to find another of my friends in the water with his board. I decided to get in. After about 15 minutes I paddled into a small wave, got a nice little ride, then decided to call it a day. Go out with a good one. My friend John decided to grab his board and get in. Says there's an unwritten rule that says if a guy catches a wave then leaves, there's bound to be a few good ones to follow... We'll see. I now return home to treat myself to a pack of Bella's Cookies. Figure a pack of organic cookies is worth the effort.

The beauty of being chief cookie taster for my wife's company is that on occasion I taste other products. Other companies make cookies and other baked items too and we always want to make sure that the quality of Bella's Cookies is far superior than others. What company wouldn't do that? Today I got a cup of coffee from Arena's in Rehoboth... I love Arena's... They carry Bella's and they sell a great number of them. They also sell other baked goods made from someone else... And today I tried a cookie bar. Terrible. I mean terrible. I can honestly say that my wife bakes the best tasting baked goods anywhere that I've ever been.

Posted by Mark:

Inside my garage is a 9'4" Colin McPhillips/Phil Stewart Noserider longboard. I traded my 7'4" funshape about 4 years ago for it... put out a little extra cash and it was mine. It's beautiful. I call it the big banana... it's bright yellow, white, just a gorgeous longboard. In fact, whenever I'm with it I frequently get "nice board" comments. Unfortunately the "big banana" has been on a ladder rack in my garage for the past two years... imagine living at the beach and not having time to just... go. Go surf. Go have fun. And somehow it happened. Work. Cookies. Work. Other stuff. Farmer's Markets. Weekend stuff. Work. Cookies. School. It got cold. I forgot. I got lazy.

A couple farmer's markets ago, one of our regular customers came up to the table dressed in beach attire... I said "you been the ocean early this morning (as it was 8 am)" and she says "yes, my dad likes to get out and surf and we've been at the beach since 6 am". And it's then I realized... what the hell have I been waiting for? I said "next time your dad is here, tell him to come by the booth and I want to go out". And he did... John came by, and we set a date and time.

So I got out the board, my old gear, kicked off the cobwebs, and prepared myself for the morning. And I got up at 5, was out the door by 5:30 and in the ocean by 6. The waves were ankle to knee, but I didn't care... I was in the water paddling around and having the time of my life. The sun came up... glistened a "wake up" beam across as far as my eyes could see... 7 dolphins surfaced... and John says... "makes you realize what you take for granted doesn't it?" And I agreed. All this time and I hadn't made the time to do these little things. Oooh, and I was rusty too. It was ugly out there, but who cared... not me. I left around 7:20... went home, showered, got dressed, and was out my door and on the road at 8 am. My day started like none of my clients I saw today did... and it made all the difference in my attitude for the day. Organic cookies for me... and my board.
