FRENCH STUDENTS VISIT THE COOPER SCHOOL
Over 100 French students aged between 13 and 15 visited The Cooper School recently as part of a cultural trip to England. The group, accompanied by several Staff, including their Heateacher, were from Collège Saint Pierre in our twinned town of Canton des Essarts in Vendée, France. The youngsters met their counterparts at the school where they were given a tour of the teaching facilities and grounds whilst trying to communicate both in English and French. The two coachloads of students then went on to visit Bicester’s Sheep Street before travelling back to Stratford Upon Avon where they were staying with host families. The following day they were heading for London before an overnight ferry crossing back to France. Karine Roche-Ali, a languages teacher at The Cooper School said, ‘Since September we have been establishing links between the two schools and our students have been writing to their French pen-friends via e-mail, exchanging photos, etc… Meeting them face to face was very exciting and all of our students enjoyed testing their French language skills on the visitors and were also treated to traditional French brioche which was brought over from France. It is always very beneficial to take part in activities such as this one and we are hoping to consolidate this link in the future and are looking into the possibility of a reciprocal visit in the next couple of years.’
HOUSE ENRICHMENT - VICTORY FOR NIGHTINGALE
This year saw Cooper House Teams competing for the newly inaugurated House Trophy. 21 hard-fought and exciting competitions later which included football, rugby, netball, chess, golf, art, creative writing, movie making and performing arts, the Mighty Nightingales emerged as House Champions for 2011. Ably led by their imperious House Captain James Allen and Vice Captain Raf Garcia-Krailing they were triumphant in no fewer than 7 competitions which included rugby, hockey, badminton, golf, Nintendo Wii, performing arts and fishing. There were stunning team and individual performances from all Houses with Newton winning 5 trophies and Churchill and Moore both winning 4. Austen House put in a stunning team performance to take the Art trophy.		7 students from each House were mentioned in despatches for excellent achievement and commitment to their Houses, with 2 from each House given shields for outstanding performances and beyond-the-call commitment. The Cooper Family Kwik Cricket Festival 2011

The annual Kwik Cricket Festival for The Cooper Family of Primary Schools took place at Bicester and North Oxford Cricket Club at Chesterton on 27 May 2011. This event was organised by The Cooper School on behalf of The North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership. One hundred and twenty Year 5 and 6 children participated in the festival, which provided the perfect opportunity for young people to put their cricket skills to the test in a competitive but fun environment.

Eighteen Year 9 students from The Cooper School, who had taken part in a cricket leader training session to help prepare them for the event, took responsibility for umpiring the matches. They also ran warm up activities and skills practices for the younger children.

Teams from Longfields, Langford Village, Glory Farm, Finmere and Launton Primary Schools played in the Festival. Six teams contested the girls’ competition, which was played on a “league” basis. Competition was close with three teams tied at the top of the table at the end of the event. A count back of runs scored by each team was needed to determine the outcome with Langford Village winning the tournament, from Launton in second place and Glory Farm in third. Seven teams took part in the boys’ event, which was played in two pools followed by play-off matches. The Langford Village boys matched the achievement of their girls’ team in winning the competition, beating Longfields by just one run in a thrilling and skilful final. Glory Farm took third place.

Members of the winning teams from Langford Village School were presented with certificates and trophies. These teams have qualified for the forthcoming County Kwik Cricket Finals.
