Many SEO experts believe that meta tags are simply no longer important or relevant. Do a simple search on Google regarding meta tags and you are sure to find no less than a few thousand articles touting the importance or futility of using them. So who’s right and who’s wrong?

Meta Tags Are Still Useful

While it is certainly true that meta tags no longer hold the same SEO “juice” they once did, thanks largely in part to unscrupulous tactics by some webmasters, there is still certainly a place for meta tags in improving a site’s overall search engine optimization. Although meta tags are no longer used by search engines for ranking purposes, when properly implemented, they can still prove to be beneficial in generating targeted search engine traffic.

Maximize Traffic to Your Site

Three of the most important meta tags on any website are the title, description and keyword tags. Of these three, the title and keyword tags are the two that will appear in search engine results pages (although not all search engines use meta tags). This is why using accurately and well-written tags is still important to SEO. When searchers are entering in keywords and phrases, the relevancy of your meta tag title and description will be very important factors in whether or not they will click on your link, or your competitors.

In addition, it is also important to remember that meta tags are primarily used as a way for search engines to crawl and index your website and its content. So if you have no existing meta tags or if they are not reflective of the actual information on your site, you may be missing out on valuable traffic or even worse- you may be penalized for having inaccurate information.

Research Your Keywords

Writing meta tags should not be done haphazardly, the keywords used within them should be carefully researched and written to avoid wasted time, money and energy. There are a number of tools available both for free and at a cost that can assist you in finding traffic generating and profitable keywords, including Google’s AdWord Keyword Tool and Search-based Keyword Tool. These tools provide a great way to research keywords and phrases that are relevant to your site and that are actively being searched.

The bottom line is that meta tags do still matter, they just do so in a different manner. So while you may not be able to achieve improved ranking solely from their existence on your site, you can maximize their effectiveness by ensuring that they are well-written and optimized to generate high traffic.

Today I'm offering the second half of "The ABC's of providing customer service to your SEO content clients". As I stated in the first half of this two-part series, providing your customers with first-class customer is a must for anyone who provides SEO content solutions.

While it's true that the dynamics of SEO copywriting are always changing, good customer service is a constant that should always be readily available by you and your team of SEO copywriters.

Here are N-Z:

Never break your promises. Ever.

Offer more than what is expected. Everyone likes receiving a little extra.

Pay attention to the details. Remember that everything matters.

Quality results should be your claim to fame.

Respond immediately and cordially to inquiries and complaints.

Stay focused. Don't lose sight of your client's goals.

Treat your clients how you'd like to be treated. Respect is just a minimum.

Utilize the information you are provided with. Don't try to wing it.

Value your client's time and money. Honor it as if they were your own.

Welcome feedback. It's invaluable.

Xercise creativity. (Just like I did with this tip. )

Yield your time to accommodate the needs of your clients. Be available.

Zone in and get the job done.
