What’s all the excitement about raw food diets? Well if your idea of a good meal is a vegetable laden salad and you relish the crisp textures of fresh fruit and the tastiness of nuts, you just might be interested in the lifestyle and health benefits of raw foodism.

Start Your Kids Eating Raw Foods
with Raw Recipes for Kids

Most people who decide to become a “raw foodist” try to ensure that at least 75% of their diet consists of raw, uncooked and unprocessed foods and 25% or less cooked food. A raw foodist typically adheres to this 75/25 breakdown with relative gusto because the belief is that improved health is linked to greater consumption of raw foods.

The old adage “you are what you eat” has taken on renewed significance with the raw food movement.

Raw Food Diet Health Benefits

Those who eat a raw food diet believe that eating food that is raw or alive helps to create energy in the person digesting this food, and creating other health benefits . Consuming cooked or “dead” food offers less opportunity for the body to absorb vital nutrients and enzymes that can help the body to digest food.

Researchers have confirmed that food cooked above a certain temperature (generally above 112º F) kills enzymes that can help the body with digestion. As a consequence, raw foodists believe eating raw food helps to increase a person’s energy levels and natural vitality.

Think about a plant sprout and the energy within a seed that causes that sprout to erupt. That growth is caused by living enzymes in that seed. Only raw food has functional live enzymes like that found in a seed. To eat food that can release that kind of energy is a powerful concept that many say passes on significant health benefits including improved digestion, healthier weight levels, and reduced risk of heart disease.

Raw Food Recipes Is a raw food diet sustainable? I agree with many health advocates that it is more difficult to maintain a raw food diet without some variety or offerings from the cooked food group. Meat, eggs, fish and cheese are often difficult dietary items to drop especially when many of these food groups contain significant nutritional value even in their cooked form. For this reason, I and many raw foodists include a small percentage of cooked food in our diet. A typical raw foodists’ diet may, therefore, include a selection of raw fruits, vegetables, beans, seaweed, nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, meat, and un-pasteurized dairy products (e.g., yogurt and raw milk).

What also makes this “lifestyle” so appealing is that so many of the food choices available are already widely known to have significant health benefits. For instance, many raw foodists include chocolate beans in their diet, and these beans are believed to foster a feeling of wellness while suppressing appetite-no surprise there. A little less familiar food item that is gaining great popularity in the raw foodist community is algae. Algae is rich in minerals, vitamins and a substance that many believe removes toxins from the body.

The nature and degree of health benefits may vary between individuals but there is little to dispute about the attributes of the foods included in a raw food diet. By and large raw food diets contain fewer trans fats and saturated fat than the typical Western diet.

While some argue that human beings have been cooking for hundreds of thousands of years and our bodies have adapted to the digestive challenges of cooked food, there is consensus that fresh fruits and vegetables provide necessary fiber that ultimately helps the body to better absorb key nutrients in our food.

Some interesting cooking techniques that can be incorporated to make a raw food diet interesting include juicing fruits and vegetables and blending or pureeing vegetables and herbs to create interesting flavors and recipes.

One of the best “byproducts” of raw foodism is that it’s an environmentally friendly lifestyle. There is far less wrapping and packaging involved in the transport and retail of fresh fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts than processed foods. Once raw foods are consumed, peels and seeds can go into the compost or can be used in other ways.

Recommended Raw Foods:
The Sunrider whole foods are not raw - but are created in a way that keeps them as “Whole Foods”, and as close to nature as possible. Many raw foodists enjoy the Sunrider whole foods on a daily basis.
Dr. Tei Fu Chen, founder of Sunrider International, takes great care in keeping the nutritional value intact, making the exclusive formulas extremely nutritious.

ACID-ALKALINE BALANCE

Balance is an important concept in our lives especially in the way we eat.

As we learn more about the effects of the foods we’ve grown to love we thankfully also learn how to take steps to stop the harm and to keep our bodies in a healthy state of balance. Some foods digested by our bodies create acid and others create alkaline. Both substances are needed for health but an Acid-Alkaline imbalance can cause illness.

The whole notion of this Acid-Alkaline imbalance is not new. Dr. William Howard Hay first introduced this concept in his 1933 publication “A New Health Era.” In that work he argued that there is one basic cause for health problems and that is the wrong chemical condition in the body. Such a condition, he argued, causes self-poisoning through acid accumulation in the body.

Today we consider the pH balance in the body as one of the indicators that can be used to determine a person’s degree of health. The term pH stands for “potential hydrogen” and the pH level is an indication of the level of alkaline or acidity in your body. A measurement between 1.0 and 6.9 is considered acidic, 7.0 is neutral and 7.1 to 14.0 is alkaline. A low pH number indicates greater acidity in the body and a higher pH number indicates greater alkalinity.

One of the easiest ways to test the body’s pH level is to use pH test strips. You can get pH paper (also called hydrazine paper) in most drug stores.

For people with normal pH levels (between 7.35 and 7.45) the blood is slightly alkaline. Acid-Alkaline diet advocates believe that our diet should reflect this pH level and be slightly alkaline. Diets, therefore, that include a significant number of acid-producing foods may disrupt the Acid-Alkaline balance. As the body tries to restore equilibrium, essential minerals can be lost in the process and they include potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium.

Acid-Alkaline Balance – Show #3

Today health specialists believe that not only can various foods contribute to the acidifying of body fluids but the way we live has a factor to play as well. It is a commonly held notion by many health experts that allergic reactions and other forms of stress can produce acids in the body.

So what can we do to achieve more balance in our bodies? Depending on the acidity level in your body it is recommended that certain “alkalizing” foods be chosen to counter this acidity. Most vegetables and fruits alkalize, as do soybeans, organic plain yogurt, buckwheat, quinoa and almonds.

Foods that contribute towards high acidity levels in the body include meats, rice, pastas, cheeses, coffee, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, condiments, and most sweeteners, except stevia and unpasteurized honey.

By adopting a diet that shifts away from acid-producing foods, many believe numerous health ailments can be addressed with some success including lethargy; nasal congestion, anxiety and headaches.

Before starting any new diet it is a good idea to discuss your plan with your health care specialist to ensure that your particular nutritional and therapeutic needs are being addressed in the healthiest and safest way possible.

Eating better and losing weight has a lot to do with what you put into your body. But it also has to do with your emotions and state of mind when you are eating. In fact, your level of relaxation when you are eating may be one of the biggest contributors to whether or not you have food cravings and are able to lose weight at all.

Relaxation and meditation have two important roles when it comes to curbing cravings. The first is biological. Recent studies have shown that there is a strong link between nutrient absorption and your stress levels while you are eating.

For decades leading diet doctors have tried to figure out why people in other countries like France and Italy can eat seemingly “bad” foods and still stay thin. It turns out that your emotional state can effect how your body absorbs nutrients. Eating in a relaxed, enjoyable environment allows you to get what you need out of your food.

One of the major reasons you experience cravings is because your body isn’t properly using the nutrients that it is receiving. If eating in front of the tv, eating while you’re stressed or eating quickly means that you’ll have more cravings, shouldn’t you take steps to slow down and relax while you’re eating?

Eating in a more relaxed manner may take some getting used to, but the results will be well worth it. By incorporating relaxation and even a bit of meditation, you’ll be able to use your food more efficiently and reduce your cravings. You can start by having real “sit down” meals. When you take the time to relax while you are eating, you’ll be able to really enjoy your food and digest it as well.

When you eat a meal or a snack, make sure to take your time and relax. Enjoy your meal as you are eating it, and don’t rush through the process. Remaining relaxed through the meal is very important to digestion. If you eat on the run or when you’re feeling sad, angry or stressed, you’ll end up having food cravings shortly afterwards.

Relaxation can also have an effect on your ability to deal with cravings as well. Often times, cravings are just a result of being bored or being stressed out. You can use meditation and other relaxation techniques to help you curb cravings.

If you’ve never meditated before it may seem intimidating. Really it’s nothing more than just sitting in a quiet spot and focusing your attention on something fixed. Some people try to think of one word like “peace,” and others try to clear their mind entirely. It’s up to you to find what’s most pleasing and relaxing for you. The point is to find a method that helps you get your mind off of food and on to what is really important, your relaxation.

Meditation, no matter what form it takes, is a terrific substitute for succumbing to cravings. Any steps you take toward relaxation will help you reduce your cravings and fulfill your weight loss or eating better plans.

Raw Food Blended Smoothies or Juicing Raw Foods?

I just received a great email newsletter and I am providing the copyrighted information below, along with a link to the Raw Family website, so you can subscribe to their newsletter. It is a fascinating experiment below.

Blending vs. Juicing

A chapter from Victoria’s up-coming book “Green Smoothie Revolution”
After I published my first book about green smoothies, I have received many inquiries from my readers asking whether blending was preferable to juicing. I also heard that some nutritionists were concerned that blending might accelerate the oxidation of the food. I was very curious to find the answer for myself and decided to seriously research this question.

I conducted a simple experiment. I chose potatoes for my experiment because it is easy to observe the process of oxidation in potatoes. You probably remember an instance when you left a slice of raw potato on your cutting board and observed it turning brown within several minutes. That is why my grandmother used to put peeled potatoes in water, to prevent browning or oxidation.

First, I peeled two potatoes so that the color of their peel wouldn’t interfere with the results of my experiment. I then juiced one potato in a twin-gear juicer and blended the other one in a Vita Mix blender with one cup of water. I placed both cups of fluid on the table and took a photograph of them. I was taking photographs frequently for two days. The potato juice started to turn brown within a matter of minutes and became dark brown by the end of the first hour. The blended potato stayed almost white for two days. The top of both liquids, which was exposed to the air, turned dark almost instantly. I repeated this experiment three times with different kinds of potatoes and various shapes of glasses. The results were the same.

It was clear that the juiced potato oxidized much faster than the blended potato. Since I am not a professional scientist, I decided to seek the opinion of someone with the appropriate expertise. I went to the local university and consulted with Gregory T. Miller, professor of chemistry of Southern Oregon University. After researching this matter, he wrote the following:

The browning is the result of oxidation of specific biomolecules in the fruit or vegetable. My students study this in lab so I have some familiarity with the process (albeit they are studying the enzymatically regulated oxidation). My wife is also a winemaker and deals with oxidation of her juice/wine or a regular basis. I also possess a huge number of resources on the oxidation topic in the form of biochemistry, medical, and nutritional books. Here are my thoughts:espiratory tract ailments.

Many people believe that the blending process will cause increased oxidation due to thousands of tiny air bubbles getting mixed into the “juice”. This effectively increases the surface area of oxygen in the liquid and facilitates the oxidation process. However, in grapes at least, I have observed the opposite to be true. The blended grape stays a truer color much longer. I believe this observation in grapes to be a result of numerous antioxidants released as the grape is blended (breaks open more cells than juicing). I believe this is what you are seeing with the potato, as well.

Potatoes contain numerous antioxidants. This may come as a surprise to many people because of the pale color of many varietals. Among others, potatoes are rich sources of phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, and anthocyanins. The concentration of each vary with the type of potato. Since your potatoes are skinless (where the greatest concentration of the tyrosinase enzyme is located), I believe the blending process releases a much higher percentage of these antioxidants from the tissue than the juicing process.

It is also possible that, in many fruits and vegetables, the bulk of the fiber released during blending reduces the oxygen saturation in the solution but, if true, I think this is a secondary issue.

Now I understand why it is commonly advised to drink squeezed juice within minutes of making it, and why smoothies can stay fresh for two or three days in the fridge. Even though I can clearly see the many benefits of smoothies, I still don’t want to completely disregard juicing. One of the main advantages of juice is that it requires next to no digestion and can be absorbed and assimilated immediately into the bloodstream, allowing the digestive system to rest. This important quality of juice allows it to be used by people who suffer from severe nutritional deficiencies or have highly irritable digestive system. People with these conditions often cannot tolerate any fiber at all, and juice may provide invaluable nourishment for them. Later, when their health will improve, these people can switch to drinking smoothies.

I agree with Dr. Doug Graham that juices are a fractured food, which is missing an essential component—fiber. When we consume enough fiber, we take a load off of our organism by improving our elimination. Toxins often build up in the colon and fiber cleans them out. When most toxins have been removed by fiber, then the body has a greater ability to absorb nutrients, thus improving digestion. Humans could not live on juices alone, whereas green smoothies are a complete food.

If I don’t have a blender around me, I juice. One time I gave my blender to my brother because I thought that he needed it more than I. While waiting for my new Vita-mix, I was juicing greens because I could not live without them. While I was juicing, I quickly got tired by the limited variety of flavors, in addition to that, I noticed that I I felt hungrier and I had to add more salads to my menu, as juices were not as filling as smoothies. Contrary to that, smoothies are very filling; I can live on them for days, and even weeks. I know of people who have chosen to live on smoothies for several weeks or months with beneficial results. You will find the extraordinary story of Clent Manich’s green smoothie experiment further in this book.

Glycemic is the concentration of glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. In order for the body to function normally a fixed range of glycemia (70 to 100mg) is required. The Glycemic Index (called GI Index) is a method that ranks foods based on how fast they raise glycemia.

There is typically a range of low (55 or less), medium (56-69), and high (70-99) Glycemic Index foods. The problem with most people is that they tend towards the high end of the glycemic index.

A Low Glycemic Index diet is a good idea for many reasons.

1. Helps Weight Loss

Eating low Glycemic foods helps to lose and control weight. When the higher Glycemic foods are consumed the extra glucose is stored as fat. So low Glycemic foods help to keep that glucose balance in your body, normally keeping you from gaining weight.

2. Improves Diabetes Control

If you are a diabetic then eating low Glycemic foods is a good idea. A low Glycemic diet increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin and improves diabetes control.

3. Reduces Health Risks

The risk of heart disease and high cholesterol are reduced. When you consume high Glycemic foods which include fried foods, white bread, doughnuts, baked potatoes, carbonated beverages, and beer, you are putting your body at a greater risk of heart attack and stroke.

4. Provides Slow, Even Energy

Low Glycemic foods release their energy slowly to the body. This helps the body to have a more concise and constant supply of energy. This in turn prevents drastic fluctuation in blood-glucose levels helping you to avoid feeling of fatigue, fogginess, and instability.

5. Balances Your Appetite

You can lose weight and have a lower BMI eating low glycemic foods. People who eat a greater amount of high glycemic index foods on average have greater levels or body fat. Lower Glycemic Index foods (under 55) metabolize slower and keeps your appetite balanced. If your appetite is balanced you won’t eat a much and you will lose weight.

The foods you should focus on to maintain a low glycemic number include: kidney beans, whole wheat pasta, tofu, soy milk, plain yogurt, apples, pears, sweet potatoes, bean sprouts, and many other fruits and vegetables.

The medium glycemic index foods include: bananas, pineapples, popcorn, and oatmeal. These foods are not as bad as the high GI foods and are a better choice when you can’t get to the low GI foods.

As mentioned earlier, high GI foods include most fried foods, pitas, doughnuts, soda crackers, baked potatoes and even watermelon.

The consumption of lower Glycemic Index foods is a wise way to watch your weight, keep blood pressure and cholesterol levesl down, keep up your energy level so that you can work more effectively through the day and help you maintain a stronger healthier life. The fact that they are mostly whole foods makes them readily available and very easy to prepare and add to your daily diet.

Health is not a joke and every precaution should be taken to ensure that your health is as good as it can possibly be. With research, a properly balanced diet that includes foods low on the GI food list, and other smart eating tactics, you can be a healthier and happier you.

At the foundation of every craving is an unbalanced diet.

Cravings are a sign that either your body has become too dependent on a substance (like salt or sugar) or that your body is missing out on important nutrients.

When you fill up on empty calories and junk food, your body will feel like it still needs to eat because it hasn’t received any nutrients with your meals. That’s why one of the most effective ways to reduce your cravings is to eat a balanced diet.

A balanced diet full of whole, unprocessed foods gives your body exactly what it is looking for. When you receive the same kind of nutrients that are necessary for proper body functioning, you won’t have as many cravings. Reduced cravings means that you won’t overeat and you’ll naturally lose weight.

The first step is to get rid of any processed foods that are a regular part of your diet. Packaged foods that are processed in a factory have excess chemicals and are normally higher in fat and calories than whole foods. Eating a lot of these types of foods will leave your body wanting more of both the chemicals and food in general. When your diet relies on these type of foods, you will feel full but will literally be starving your body of nutrition.

Vitamins cannot replace the natural nutrients and minerals that are found in fresh, whole foods. In order to reduce your cravings and get back on track with eating better, you’ve got to shift your diet. One of the easiest ways to tell if you are eating right is to take notice of where you do most of your shopping at the grocery store. If you concentrate your shopping on the outside aisles, then you’re eating fresh, whole foods. Most processed foods are found in the center rows of a grocery store. Stick to the fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, meats (if you eat them) and you’ll see a reduction in cravings.

In addition to craving more food than you should eat, you may also experience cravings for food substances like salt or sugar. Unfortunately, with these additives the more you eat, the more your body wants them. In order to curb this craving, you’re going to need to take steps to remove them from your diet entirely.

It may be hard at first, and you’ll definitely go through a withdrawal period where you experience an intensification of your cravings. Increase your water intake, start an exercise program and keep eating healthfully. Chemical additives and excess sugar and salt can sometimes be hard food addictions to break. Commit yourself to eliminating these things from your diet for at least 2 weeks and you’ll see a big difference.

The best way to eliminate cravings from your life is to incorporate fresh, whole foods into your diet. Remove harmful substances from your diet and once you get over the initial withdrawal, your health will be better and you won’t experience cravings any longer.

Candida, Cravings, Choices - the Vicious Cycle

If you’ve ever been a victim of the “yeast beast” as it’s called, you know how strong the cravings can be.

The very foods you should avoid when you’re fighting a candida overgrowth are the ones you crave the most: sugar, carbs, alcohol, cheese, vinegary foods. What’s more, eating too much of these foods is what contributes to the overgrowth in the first place!

How do you stop the vicious cycle of poor food choices, candida, and cravings?

1. Rid Your Home of all tempting Candida-forming foods

Willpower may not be enough. As the yeast dies off, it sends a powerful message: Feed Me! A first step would certainly be to rid your home of everything you shouldn’t be eating on an Anti-Candida Diet. Make it difficult to obtain those foods.

2. Keep a Food Diary

Secondly, try keeping a food diary. When you have to write down every bite that passes your lips, it creates a kind of accountability.

3. Eat Foods that Help Decrease Cravings

Thirdly, support your body’s healing process by giving it foods that will help with the cravings and that will balance your system.

Lacto-fermented foods such as raw sauerkraut, kim chi, fermented veggies - these all feed the healthy bacteria in your gut that assist in keeping the candida in check. They also tend to curb cravings.

Kombucha tea can also help, and there are herbs you can take to support your body in healing.

Coconut is naturally antifungal - try to include coconut oil in your cooking every day.

Green tea has been shown in studies to lead to weight loss.

Stevia Health Benefits

Try drinking green tea with Stevia, a safer alternative sweetener that also has the benefit of reducing cravings for sweets! In addition to making you feel better, eating these foods can make you LOOK better!

They often lead to weight loss as your cravings subside and your body becomes balanced.

I’ve just completed a spring cleaning on my apartment - well, I am moving apartments, and in the process I cleaned out and gave away a lot of unnecessary items. It feels so wonderful to “lighten up” and simplify.

We can do that for our bodies too.

Dandelion Root - Food for the Liver

Dandelion Root is known as a food for the liver, and is very high in calcium and other nutrients. Some herbal texts mention dandelion’s ability to aid skin problems, detoxify poisons and toxic waste in the body, and act as a tonic to the stomach. Dandelion is a natural source of protein, and is very high in Vitamins A, B, C, and E. It is rich in potassium, calcium, and natural sodium, with some phosphorus and iron.

Some benefits noted by herbalists include:

• Clears toxins
• Cleans the liver
• Promotes urination
• Beneficial for arthritic conditions
• Gentle, mild, natural Antibiotic
• Inhibits bacteria and fungi
• One of the most Detoxifying herbs
• Beneficial for skin problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis

Louise Tenney writes in Today’s Herbs: “The liver is our personal food storage. Starches are stored in the liver, and changed to glycogen and released as the body needs energy-building material. Fats are stored in the liver as well as proteins, where they are changed into amino acids. White blood cells are manufactured in the liver to destroy germs and poisons, which come from the intestines. The liver is responsible for the substance that causes blood to clot. The liver also detoxifies. It renders harmless the toxic end-products of the digestion process. When the liver is working properly, it has the task of eliminating toxic metals. When the liver is in trouble, it puts strain and congestion on all the glands, muscles, joints and the body structure. Dandelion strengthens the liver with its easily assimilated minerals concentrated in the roots of the plant.”

Why should we Cleanse the Liver?

The liver is the largest organ in the human body. It is extremely complex. The liver performs over 500 functions in the body - can you imagine if you had to perform 500 functions? That is high demand on our poor liver! Here are just some of the functions the liver performs:

1. Purifies the blood
2. Manufactures and secretes bile
3. Stores 20% to 30% of your body’s blood
4. Detoxifies - turns toxic materials into non-toxic material
5. Creates, metabolizes, and stores Hormones
6. Metabolizes Fat - affects triglycerides, cholesterol, blood and body fat levels
7. Metabolizes Nutrients for Life: proteins, fats, carbohydrates

Signs of a Sluggish Liver

1. Allergies
2. Chemical Sensitivie
3. Constipation
4. Obesity
5. PMS (Pre-menstrual syndrome)

Dandelion Root Liver Cleanse and Detox Recipe

Start slowly, with 1 capsule a day, and work up.
Cleansing & Detox Recipe — Dandelion Root Recipe for Liver Cleanse, “Spring Cleaning” the body or for “Body Cleaning” any time: Open 2-3 capsules Dandelion Root, mix in 8 ounces warm or hot water. Drink 3-4 cups per day.

I have written often about the harmful effects of Caffeine.

Here is one of my Original Blog Posts on Harmful Effects of Caffeine - that is what I wrote when I created my Cravings Coach Blog over 2 years ago.

I have only just learned that caffeine is really the way a plant protects itself from insects…… - did you know that? So the coffee bean protects itself, it is nature’s way of protecting it from being eaten by insects and bugs.

In other words, the caffeine is a natural plant PESTICIDE!

Can you believe it?

We are definitely eating a poison! A natural poison, but still a poison.

I remember on the beach in Hawaii, when I was working for Dr. Paul Bragg over 30 years ago… he would often talk about how people needed to get off coffee.

It certainly applies more today - with caffeine being in all the Sodas and Diet Sodas, in the Energy Drinks, in the upscale Lattes and coffees that everyone is addicted to!!

I just would encourage you to cut back on your caffeine consumption (and cut it out altogether if you can!).

Here is the way I was able to gain complete freedom from my addiction to 8 cups of coffee a day! Sunrider Calli Tea came to my rescue 12 years ago!

I have posted frequently about the harmful side effects of Artificial Sweeteners on my blog.

So many people use Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi and other Diet products, thinking they are doing well because they are eliminating sugar from their diets.

However, these artificial sweeteners are addictive, and often you crave more. The artificial sweeteners used include Aspartame and Splenda. Many people already know that they should avoid aspartame.

However, even Doctors and Nutritionists recommend Splenda.
The advertising for Splenda is very enticing and hypnotic, making you want to use this substitute for sugar.

See this site for The Truth About Splenda

More research is being done, and proving that Splenda can be harmful for you.

Splenda is not a natural food. It is a chlorinated artificial sweetener which has been marketed as being a healthy substitute for sugar.

A recent Duke University study states:

“Splenda suppresses beneficial bacteria …. and interfere with the bioavailability of ….nutrients. Furthermore, these effects occur at Splenda doses that contain sucralose levels that are approved by the FDA for use in the food supply.”
