Enchanted Forest – A Gift in the Midst of CFS

What a unique experience of creating I’ve had this past week!

I want to share the process of creating this new painting, “Enchanted Forest”, because I hope it will be inspiring and insightful to my friends, my fellow artists, art collectors and fellow ME/CFS sufferers.

I’ve been having a difficult time with my illness since last August. However, since January, I have been experiencing one of the worst, and longest flares I have ever had. That is partly due to the fact that I pushed my body way past it’s limit from October thru December. Christmas Eve – it decided to push back and I’ve been struggling all kinds of symptoms ever since.

Approximately 14 days ago, I decided to take a break from one supplement that had been helping me a lot since last January. But it’s effectiveness wore off in Aug and as I researched, I realized I needed to supplement the supplement. So I thought I would take a month or so off, and see if restarting with additional supplements would kick start it back to helping me.

Little did I know, how much it was still helping – even though it “appeared” to have become ineffective! Within 3 days of stopping it, I dropped of the charts in fatigue and brain function.

I’ve spent a lot of time in bed, and watching Netflix movies.

Now that you know the background, let me tell you about the creation of this painting. (I wish I had taken pictures of this process!!!)

An online watercolor group I have been a part of for many years has a monthly challenge. This month, the challenge was to paint Pine Cones.

The first few days of “cliff drop”, I thought about this challenge if I wanted to try it, and how I would paint it.

I spent at least 3-4 days thinking it through, imagining it in my head.

After a general plan was formed in my head, I finally was able to pick up my Arches watercolor block, and I sketched out the pine cones.

I knew that I was going to try some unique things with the background, so the next day, I found the time and strength to mask the pine cones so I could work on the background first.

I knew I might be making a big mistake trying a painting at this very low point of fatigue – most of my “fatigue” paintings are helpful in keeping me going emotionally and distract me on my down days, but they don’t turn out very good. I’m shaky, inpatient (because I only have so much time before I’m exhausted) and I tend to make a mess of these paintings.

Sure enough… as I was masking in the pine cones… I was working too fast, and I dripped some masking on the background. I had to let it dry before I could scrape it off, so I kept working on the pine cones. Another couple of drips… and I almost gave up! Then, spur of the moment I decided that I would splatter the masking! I began, choosing the area I knew would be light and spreading it upward.

The next day it was dry and I was surprised to find that I liked how I imagined it would turn out. I scraped a few spots off that didn’t seem to be in good spots. I also found my shaky hands had not done a good job on some of the very small areas of masking so I sat in my recliner and used my masque pen to complete a few of the areas that needed small tight turns or thin lines.

The masked drawing sat for a day, and then I got down on the floor, and started with a background wash. I had planned on a color scheme of browns and greens… and I had some kind of general idea of trying a new texture technique for the lower half, using real pine needles. But I knew I need some glowing color underneath, so I painted a background with yellows, reds, golden browns, olive green and even a bit of blue… all very soft.

That’s all I could do that day, and I left it to dry. It was just a smudge of colors and I could see on my husbands face that he was trying to be encouraging, but was doubtful this would turn out to be anything worth keeping. I wasn’t so sure myself!

The next day, I focused on the upper part of the background. I just began painting… keeping my area of light – blending wet into wet until I was happy with how it looked. It was relaxing and fun.

The next day, I complained to my husband that I wanted to keep working on it, but I needed pine needles from the Christmas tree in the back yard, and I was too tired to go get some. So he generously went and gathered a baggie full for me that evening.

So the following day, inspired by the idea in my head, but not sure if it was going to work, I got out my little spray bottles and began to create the color mixtures I had in mind.

I started with two… one was a gold/brown and another a darker red brown.

I sprinkled pine needles around the paper. Then, with the lighter color, I sprayed color – making sure to keep it light in the right areas, and heavier in the areas that would be darker.

That was all the energy I had. But what a blessing! Because I was so tired, I was forced to leave it and let it dry overnight!!!

The next day, I sat down and without disturbing the needles, I sprayed it again with the darker color. Again, I let it dry all night.

The following day, I removed the needles to see what I had. They had created a great texture. In some spots they collected paint, and in others, they were a natural resist – leaving pine needle shapes all over the bottom half of the painting!

But I had a problem. The top half was green, the bottom half was brown. Ugly! I sat in my recliner and stared at it the rest of the day.

The next morning I knew what I wanted to do. This project, had become my reason for getting out bed every morning. It called me to rise above my illness. It left my illness behind. Yet, my illness forced stillness, reflection and patience as I painted.

I mixed up two new spray colors. On based largely on Quinacridone Gold, another was a green, produced with some of the reddish brown from the other day, some of the lighter gold, some blue and greens.

First I did a bit of blending between the top and bottom with a wet paintbrush. Then, I scattered fresh pine needles and used the green and the gold on the needles. But this time I also used the spray on the top half, which allowed me to darken the edges, add more of that magical look and blend the top and bottom.

When it was fully dry, I removed the pine needles and I again, used the gold on top of the layers to and spritzed wherever it felt right. Then I was done for the day. (notice all the drying time? This gave me time to rest, nap etc… but I kept returning to the next small step)

The next morning, I looked at the background and was so surprised and happy! It was more than I had imagined… it was like the hand of God had taken hold of mine and together we’d created a mystical, serene, yet textured background!!! It was time to remove the masking.

I carefully removed the masking from the pine cones, and then, the most fun was removing the spatters. I was thrilled!

Each pine cone took me a full days energy to paint. At first, I was worried that painting one at a time could make it difficult to keep unity, but it wasn’t. I painted in spurts… which allowed me to do some wet into wet… and then improve the depth and texture with some dry brush.

As I completed each pine cone, I painted in it’s shadow. Once I had completed all three pine cones, I spent another day perfecting the shading, adding a second lighter layer of shadow and adding some Payne’s Grey under one pine cone to ground it (it looked a bit like it was floating)

I stood the painting up, across the room from my recliner when I wasn’t working on it. This gave me a lot of time to look at it, ponder, perfect in my mind and plan what I would do next.

The hardest part for me, on every painting, is to sign it! Isn’t that funny? But I finally settled on a nice red/orange paint and signed it in the lower left corner.

Why share all these secrets? 2 reasons…

First, it helps to remind me to be thankful for some of the amazing things I wouldn’t have without this illness and thankful to God for showing me he has not abandoned me. This painting truly is a gift from Him and a result of ME/CFS. I have never painted when I’m this fatigued, and I’ve never painted in such small increments.

Second, I look at this painting and my heart jumps for joy. I’ve finally found Melanie in my painting. I can see evidence of the many people and workshops that have helped me, but up until now, I hadn’t found my style… I hadn’t found “me” in my artwork!

I plan on continuing to perfect this style of painting, so expect to see more in the future! And thank you for spending the time to go on this journey with me.

A New Look and ACA Award!

Well? What do you think? I've spent this week making my blogs more personally "me"! I found instructions on how to turn my blogger template into three columns at Three Column Blogger and lots of tips on making my own banner and choosing a background at The Blogger Guide. It was a lot of work, but I'm pretty happy with it and hope it will make reading more fun and easy!

I also found out this week, that I won another ACA award! This year I was nominated in the Fiber Art category for my needle felted ACEO's! I won third place! Cool!

One more big big thing coming up... I am going to be entering my first ever watercolor show! It's held at the Westfield Mall in Vancouver, WA and I'm going to enter at least one piece and maybe two. I turn in my paintings the evening of March 29th. It is held in the main area in front of Nordstroms and will be up all week long. Anyone in the area should stop by and check it out! And maybe you'll even think mine deserves some votes for the People's Choice Award! Everyone who comes to the show gets to vote!

Cherry Blossoms Makeover

For the first time in my painting career, I have picked up a painting that was completed (almost 2 years ago) and reworked it! I've learned so much since I painted this watercolor of Cherry Blossoms!

But it didn't seem worthy of tossing in the discard pile... so I got my paints out and began by reworking the background. I re-wetted... added darker outlines, lighten and added a nice granulating green. It brought a much lovelier background to the blossoms.

But then... my eye began to look at the blossoms themselves. I saw so many areas I would do differently now. So I began working, adding color, water, shadows... and suddenly, my pretty flat cherry blossoms - popped! They became gorgeous with such depth! So I thought I'd show you my "new" old painting - "Cherry Blossoms". It measures 16"wide and 12" high and is for sale on 1000 markets or if you really prefer to use PayPal... it's also on Etsy.

Winter Wonderland

I have been in such a snow painting mood! I think it's because it was the weekend we always cut down our lovely fresh Northwest Christmas tree - and last year, it was sprinkling snow while we were picking it out.

This year, though, it was much warmer - and yet it was amazingly lovely. We were there at the end of the day as the sun was setting. The wet trees created a mist and I felt like I was walking through a Narnia forest!

But on my paper, it's been a Winter Wonderland!! Here are three paintings that have just been listed in my store. Click on the painting to see the listing.
