Things you may not realize. All in all it's not a BAD trade for the Twins, they jsut could have maybe gotten a better one.

For now -- just bask in the glory that is the New York Mets.

it's peanut butter jelly time!!!

Wow. I knew the Twins were supposed to be making a decision today, but I never actually thought...

The USA Today is reporting that for Johan we are giving up Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Carlos Guerra. Wow. If this all pans out, we didn't have to give up Fernando Martinez or Mike Pelfrey!

They just said on ESPN that this is the 4th worst offer the Twins got for Santana, (the other 3 were from the Yankees and the Red Sox earlier on) but they played hard ball, stuck it out, and ended up getting burned. I thought for sure we were gonna lose F-Mart, but Omar played his cards right, and I am pumped!

You can read about it here, here, here, and here.

From the USA TODAY: "The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so."

Let's get that contract figured out men. For now you can sit back and wipe the drool off of your chin and take a look at our 2008 rotation now:

1) Pedro Martinez
2) Johan Santana
3) John Maine
4) Oliver Perez
5) Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez

I love this deal, but FWIW, I did like Carlos Gomez, and I think he will turn out to be a great player.

I need a beer.

vermeil a cyclone?

The Chiefs tried to regain some offensive firepower this week by signing Chan Gailey. We haven't been stellar on that side of the ball since Dick Vermeil was around. Well. The old man has been spotted at the East/West Shrine Bowl game practices wearing an ISU CYCLONES HAT!!!

How sweet is that? Not sure how or why he got it. I did hear that when Vermeil was still coaching our Chiefs, Jim Criner would help him out in preseason drills, so who knows?

Anyways, there was a post on AP the other day that got my attention, relating offense/defensive rankings to each other. Here are a couple of interesting graphs. (Well, interesting to me)

Above is somewhat of a copy of arrowhead pride's graph. But I put white lines in for years we made the playoffs. I learned nothing except that a lot of different styles of team can make the playoffs. Anybody else learn anything besides: "man, our offense sucked last year!"?

This one is just showing where we have ranked in the Takeaway/Giveaway ratio. The yellow dots are years we made the playoffs, and the red dots are years we didn't. The yellow line is our average T/G ratio ranking when we make the playoffs, and the red line is for when we didn't.

Nothing really groundbreaking here, it's amazing that in 1999 we didn't make the playoffs with that ratio. That was Gunther's first year after Marty resigned. The freakin Raiders beat us with a FG in OT to make us finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

wedding bells

This isn't really related to anything about the clones or chiefs or mets or live music. I thought that was kinda cool, so I decided that I would put the whole support of the crocked blog behind something. Of course, I only have two readers, and one of them lives on the dark side of the state, so...

Anyways, I am throwing my whole support behind "rockstar karaoke" at People's Court, downtown Des Moines. It's held every Thursday, and I went there this week, and had a blast. I think there were 9 of us, and I think everybody dug it. When I describe it to you, it won't sound nearly as cool as it is. I have been hearing about this thing since the day they started it, and I never once was truly that interested.

Basically, there are two bands, Kountertop, (who is playing my brother's wedding) and Kentucky Fried Mullet. They alternate Thursday's. This week, I saw KFM.

So, the band is up there on stage. There is a mic in the middle, with nobody standing in front of it. Meanwhile there is a list of songs going around the bar. You pick a song, the band will rock out, and you get to sing. Sounds simple, but it is sweet. Mainly because it's not like you are at a dive bar on Merle Hay watching some drunk idiot trying to sound like Johnny Cash. The people that get on stage know they are good. And they are good. I think each winner goes on to some like championship night than that winner gets two tickets to vegas or something.

Trust me. If you have vacation to burn (it's too late now I suppose) take a Friday off and go to this. Even if you have to call in sick, or something. I wasn't even hammered and I loved it. I can only imagine how fun it would be if I was...

the mayor is the man

"The Mayor" Fred Hoiberg is showing off some of that Iowa State University excellence by, well, being himself. (which happened to be the game I was at against SD in Arrowhead). He may start this weekend against the Donkeys.
Now the Chiefs are all but out of the playoff race, and Kolby Smith is our starting running back. Cool, huh? Oh ya, we fired our second kicker of the year after he blew another game or two for us. Pitiful.

There aren't very many good things I can say about the Chiefs, but one of them is that Jared Allen is still an animal. He has like 12.5 million sacks this year and actually caught a TD pass last weekend. If I wasn't so hammered inside that stadium I probably would have witnessed it with my own two eyes, but I didn't figure it out till it came over the load speaker that he was the one that caught it. Damned Black Velvet.

One more thing on the Chiefs, D-Bo is being touted by ESPN as being NEXT. Our basketball team sucks. I am so embarrassed and disappointed and pissed. I watch all the games, and for some reason I watch them till the end. It's like I'm a masochist. I must like to feel pain, although is doesn't turn me on... I don't know what I am then. Just a Cyclone fan I guess.

So, we will be at the bar Saturday afternoon cheering our bball team on against Iowa like we always do. Beat Minny to take the number one spot in the country. Isn't Cael a freaking animal? We wrestle the freaking Hawks this Sunday in Ames, and the little babies over there are already making excuses for the beat down they are about to receive. One of the more humorous ones is how they are pissed about our new seating arrangement in Hilton. Basically, Cael decided to put up a huge curtain, cut Hilton in half, and make it more intimate, more intimidating. Great, huh?

Well hawk fans think that we are doing it to keep them out. To me, it feels like a waste of a weekend. A FREAKING RIP-OFF.

To add to this crap, I got hosed during the tailgate Saturday. I was lights out during the 6th Annual Beer Pong Tourney. Dominated the winner's bracket. My partner was crrrap. We got second place. Got beat twice to the team that wrestle-backed on us. I don't want to talk about it. He (my partner) thinks it's funny, I think I want to break something.

Anyways, I don't feel that great about the Clones' win Saturday, though it was sweet. Sunday is always last which makes it first in my memories. Which sucks. The goddamn Chiefs are letting me down.

In 1:37 we give up back-to-back TD's at the start of the second half. That took us from being up 2 to down 12. The first TD was right after a Huard pick (tipped). Then the other on a Huard fumble returned for a touchdown. Brodie... Brodie... Brodie...

Who's fault were those TD's? Umm... Well, that doesn't really matter now, because what matters is that we witnessed the start of the Brodie Croyle era.

From Arrowhead Pride:

It finally happened Chiefs fans. Without getting in depth in this post, I would like to discuss the "closeness" of the two spots.

First let's look at Brady's (google link):

That comes up as a .1 mile walk. Not bad. Now let's look at ours (google link):

That also comes up as .1 miles. Here's the catch though. I never ever walk over to the light and across the street, I cut across the lot straight to the gates. So my walk is now cut down to, let's say... .08 miles. Chalk one point up for the good guys.

Now onto the actual tailgating area. Take a look:

I know the pictures make it pretty obvious where you'd want to be, but I will elaborate quickly.

In Iowa City (1st picture), you can tailgate in someone's flower garden. Or if you are lucky you can pack your cars in and sit on the hood/bumper. If you get up early, as everybody should, you can reserve a little space and slide a big long flip-cup table in between a couple black beretta's. The only positive is that you never see fat chicks around because they can't fit between the cars. So they just hang out at the ped mall waiting for the real drunks to show up knowing they won't notice the size of their cankles.

In Ames you are tailgating in a massive green sea of buses, vans, beanbags, beer pong, flip cup, and other forms of revelry. It feels open and full of energy. People are throwing footballs... grilling all sorts of food... kids get tackled by cops on bikes. It's great!!! The space allotted alone brings our tailgating to the forefront of not only this match up against Iowa, but I would bet most match ups across the NCAA.

Bring on the next competitor. Nebraska? Please you have none. Oklahoma? Been there, we were alone. Kansas? Your tailgates are dry.

Nobody can match the power that a cyclone can bring. At least in the lots.

billin ain't eazy!!!

the pack IS whack

This is too good not to reprint, copied directly from Arrowhead Addict.com, I hope they don't mind:

The Top 10 Reasons Why the Kansas City Chiefs Trump the Green Bay Packers:

10. Their big win came against Texas. We don't really have a big win, we just have a win, and it was against a not very impressive iowa team. Just think if all of our games were played against teams of Iowa's caliber. (Not that there are that many teams in that realm) We could be looking at a possibility of a January bowl game!!! But no, we play in the Big 12.

As for the clones, we have been looking better lately. We came up short against Oklahoma two weeks ago, and our team pissed me off royally last week, shooting our selves multiple times in the foot at the start of the second half against Missouri.

On to Kansas State, they are looking good and people are not expecting much out of our clones Saturday. Their QB (Josh Freeman) could be the next Daunte Culpepper according to Chizik. (Not that that is a good thing) Also, I heard a radio jockey say something about how Ames is going to be wowed by this Freeman kid, and our defense will too, blah blah blah. I'm not quoting it word for word, but you get it -- some stupid thing to get people to call in or write his show, I won't bite. (Jon Miller)

I am sure this QB is good. He was a highly touted Nebraska recruit that royally f***ed them over and re-nigged to KSU. (I don't hold that against him, that is actually kind of funny)

I guess I can sit here (not knowing much about him) and state that I dislike Josh Freeman very much... and I will his Junior and Senior year too. It's fun to have a young rival QB to dislike! He can maybe fill the role that Brad Smith held down for so many years. Freaking Brad Smith. (While I'm thinking about it, I'm adding Chase Daniel to this list, don't like that guy either -- reason #1)

Anyways, sticking to Freeman, if Saturday goes like the experts say and he takes us to the woodshed, without hesitation I will upgrade that strong dislike to a hate. That's when college football gets really fun. Or it at least gives a one-win season a little pop and sizzle.

free lucca!

As most of you have heard, the NCAA has declared Lucca Staiger ineligible. (Our freshman guard from Germany). He was not projected as a starter, but he would have gotten a lot of playing time, and may have started before the season was over.

You can visit FreeLucca.com to read more on this, here are a few excerpts from the site:

...This decision stems from Lucca’s participation on the Ehingen Club team in his native Germany when he was only 16 years old...

...The NCAA concluded that the Ehingen team was “professional” because two of the players on the team received benefits in excess of NCAA limits. Due solely to his participation on this team, the NCAA imposed the maximum penalty of one year’s loss in eligibility, even though Lucca did not personally receive any improper compensation...

There is also a link to a petition you can sign (link), which I accidentally signed twice, (1213 & 1813).

This is a sad, sad deal. I cannot believe the timing associated with this. They could have announced this a long time ago, thus giving us time to appeal. Now, the season is upon us, and this poor kid, who tried to do everything right in order to play college ball, is sitting on the sidelines.

Here is a great blog from the DMRag that spells out what a crock the NCAA actually is. I am also starting to move on from the fact that our ISU Cyclone football team really isn't very good. They tell me we are in a rebuilding year. Is that true? I know I am a little pissed off about the way the season ended up, but every single one of you would be the same way if you were in my shoes. But what's done is done, it's time to move on.

The first and possibly last step in my road to recovery is hate, or maybe revenge, I am not sure. Basically, I have had a strong disliking for the Cubs for some time now, (thanks AJC) and that has boiled over into hoping they crash and burn this year. Big time. I mean BIG TIME. Why? Well, take a look at this:

Notice anything stupid about this? Let's see... who made the playoffs... Boston, Cleveland, Yanks, Angels, Arizona, Colorado, Philly, and CHICAGO??? What a crock!! If Atlanta (3rd best team in the NL East by the way) played in that division, you know they would have been on top EASILY!! No competition!!

I have nothing against Philly anymore, they played their asses off and deserved to make the playoffs. But don't let the Cubs win the Series, or the Pennant for that matter. Or just kick em right out of the playoffs.

If you wanted to, you could let the Padres in, one game down and everything. They are the most deserving. I know... this is basically saying throw away the divisions, and just take the top 4 from the NL and the AL... and so on and so forth. I don't really want that to happen, as that is a little drastic and it is wrong in many monetary ways.

I know that some saps out there like the story of the underdog. Not me. I am bitter and I am pissed that I have to listen to people talk about the Cubs day in and day out everywhere I go. Let's end it quick. If I knew Steve Bartman, I would tell him to go piss on the ivy or something.

BTW, another extremely weird form of my hate and vengefulness is the fact I am thinking about cheering for the Yankees a little. Because if they won the Series everybody would be pissed off, and I am already sick of being the only pissed off person in Central Iowa right now. I wouldn't necessarily be cheering out loud for them, just not rooting against them AS MUCH. For people wondering... The Mets are now tied for the division lead with the Phillies.

I need to drink my sorrows away. I invite all Mets fans to join me. All 2 of you that I know. We can sit around and talk about how crappy our bullpen is. Cubs fans -- you are not allowed. You and Whistling Willy.

By Sunday, we will know who is going to the playoffs and who isn't. I am stressed. We have Ollie going today, then the Maine event tomorrow with Tommy G finishing it out on Sunday.

Who knew that a pennant race could be so depressing? I mean -- being tied for the division lead with three games to go should be exciting, right? Well, it's not. Here's hoping we can pull an 06 Cards or an '00 Yanks and have a meltdown in Sept, only to triumph in October.

HD

I absolutely refuse to comment on the fact that the Mets may be in the midst of the biggest meltdown in MLB history. Well, I guess I did comment on that just then. I seriously had trouble sleeping last night, knowing that the Phils won, and not knowing if the Mets did or not. I woke up at 5:45 to get online and found out they did in fact lose. Again. To the Nationals. We have a one game lead on the Phils, the magic number is 4, with four games remaining for both teams. I have nothing to comment on the matter, just the facts.

Anyways, I thought you would all like to know, that Hello Dave has released some new dates near us for the fall:

Oct. 13 (Saturday) - The Q Bar (Iowa City)

Oct. 21 (Sunday) - Ak's (Beaverdale) - Mike solo

Oct. 22 (Monday) - Cabaret (West Glen)

Oct. 23 (Tuesday) - Grand Piano Bistro (East Village)

Nov. 30 (Friday) - People's (Downtown)

Not sure how those Sunday/Monday/Tuesday shows are gonna pan out, especially with a little thing I like to call "harvest" going on. Also, that show in Iowa City is on the same date as the Texas game in Ames.

half and half

I am not going to talk about the ISU game. Well, maybe a little. I was at a wedding, so I didn't follow it too closely, except for calls from friends. From what I understand, we had the lead, and gave it away. Nothing like a bad snap on a punt that gets recovered by them in the end zone to lose the lead. Then getting your game winning field goal blocked. Special teams wins a game for us at home, and loses it for us on the road a week later. Great.

Maybe somebody who actually listened to the ISU game can fill me in on here about what happened. I refuse to listen to local radio, read local news, or watch local TV until this blows over. So far so good.

The Chiefs pulled out a win at home yesterday against the Vikings. Looks like we may have a #1 receiver for the first time in, like, a long time in D-Bowe.

For those that watched the Chiefs on TV, this is what they wouldn't show us when a fan ran on to the field. The KC Wolf rules, pretty hilarious.

(Thanks to Arrowhead Pride for the link)
