Day 15 - A Dinosaur

Being that I actually drew the portrait of Cooper a few months ago, I only thought it was fair to draw something right now. Luckily I was able to ease back into this challenge with a fairly simple drawing. I love dinosaurs, and t-rex's are my favorite. Did you know that "rawr" means 'I love you' in dinosaur? #fact

Day 14 - Portrait of a Pet

Okay, so I promise that this time around I will finish all the items on this list. To be honest it was this drawing that I long dreaded and it was a big reason I didn't finish this challenge the last time around. However, a few months ago while I was feeling a bit courageous, I decided to draw my dearest Cooper, and although the thought of having to draw his coat frightened me, I firmly grasped my 2B pencil and rode into battle. The result, I think is one of my absolutely best drawings to date and I'm very proud to say that I did my handsome little "puppy" justice :)

I was taking something out of my trunk the other day when I saw the prettiest sunset across the tree tops. It was bright orange, as if setting the sky ablaze. It was then that I realized I don't watch the sunset enough. The absolute perfect time of day where all imaginable colors paint the sky, and it's a different painting everyday. Hues of blues and reds, decorated with clouds or mountain tops, it's magnificent. I saw the sunset that day and instantly I wanted to draw it; however I was a bit saddened because I knew I would never be able to replicate it, I would never be able to fully capture the element that took my breath away. So night, after finishing some work I saw my pastels in a drawer, inviting me to take them out and bring color to my world. I primarily use graphite because it's neater and the lines are more precise, ever use charcoal or pastels? It's a mess! But today for some reason, being in a somewhat whimsical mood, I decided to get my hands dirty, literally. I can't say I'm happy how this turned out, but considering I have not used pastels in over two years I think it's decent. And although I don't think photographs do pastel drawings justice (the color is a bit darker in person) I think that I'll use pastels more often. Something about mixing colors makes me feel like a 5 year old again. Do you know any 5 year olds? They are the coolest people around.

Day 12 - An Elderly Person

Last week I drew a baby, and I thought to myself that babies are quite possibly the most difficult subjects to draw. I was wrong. Today I completed a drawing of an elderly person, which you may recognize as Albert Einstein. This has to honestly be the most difficult drawing I've attempted to date. I am usually able to start and complete a portrait in 2 hours on average, but Herr Einstein took about 5 in total! I had the basic layout of the picture and features done in a timely manner, but I spent a significant amount og time working on his wrinkles and hair. I said last week that shading on a baby's portrait was vital, but I found that the opposite is true with an older person. What I mean to say is that it's the highlighting really helps the drawing come together and make the wrinkles and white hair believable. I can't say that this is my finest work, but I am satisfied with it, especially the tongue which I think looks pretty realistic.

Day 13 - A Baby

Okay so I'm back but I think the list is going to get a bit jumbled...just bear with me. This cute little guy just turned 1 today, and I had his mama's permission to draw him and post this. I never would have imagined it would have been so difficult to draw a baby. Their features are so soft it makes any and all shading that much more important.

But I did draw something recently and here it is, yet another self portrait, but I really liked how this one turned out. Right....so I'll be back soon, I just need to sort a couple things out

I know I've been gone for days now, but the Christmas season finally caught up with me! I've been in a panic to get things in order, and with Christmas only two days away, then my birthday on the 29th i'm in no shortage of errands to run. My 12-year-old cousin walked into my room today and saw me shading a copy of a portrait I once drew, she looked at me and said "I wish I could draw like you." The truth is, I wish I could draw better. I'm not trying to sound modest, I'm not fishing for compliments, but to be perfectly honest I don't think what I draw is anything extraordinary. I honestly believe that everyone can do what I do. My deficiency lies in my lack of imagination; I can only draw what I see, and although I can see pictures in my head, they are never clear enough for me to draw accurately. I'm not really sure how to fix this....drawing free from restraint is an ability I admire in children, but even as a child I was overly logical. So what's ability without imagination? It's a curse. It's a glass wall facing unlimited possibilities. It's just my luck :\

I have I ever talked about my love for Ringo Starr? Well I absolutely love him, and think he is gorgeous! Oh and before you ask, he is an actor, apart from The Beatles movies he appeared in a few other movies, most notably Caveman (I thought it was hilarious by the way).

Day 04 - Re-design a Book Cover

I had such a hard time with this one for two reasons: 1) I wasn't sure what book to choose, and when I thought of a book I enjoyed, I couldn't imagine a different cover. Then it came to me...Stephen King's IT and the memorable line, "they all float down here." 2) The style is rather gothicesque, and I've never drawn anything like it before.

Not sure if it's clear, but it's Pennywise's face on a balloon....hahah it was the best I could come up with.

Day 02 - Imaginary Friend

I actually had an imaginary friend when I was younger. Her name was Fina and I can hardly remember when she came to play with me, but I know she left shortly after my brother was born. I had such a hard time remembering what she looked like, I can't remember ever drawing a picture of her, but I know she had a big nose, and loved going on all my adventures.

It was brought to my attention recently that I don't draw enough....I agree. As much as I love putting graphite on paper, I rarely produce anything of substance. I suffer from lack of inspiration you see, I never know what to draw. So let me take the subject out of the equation and venture on a 30 day drawing challenge. Headwrap success

The other night I bought my very first crochet pattern (Elisabeth Headwrap) and after look at the complicatedness of it, I decided to leave it for the next day. So yesterday I took my size J hook and favorite shade of blue yarn and went to work. As with most new patterns I work off of, it seemed to take me hours to finish, and when I did the end result was as it should have been. I was so excited. A cute headwrap for me to wear, but then I tried it on....it was too big, HUGE infact. I couldn't believe it, I had even used a size J hook instead of the suggested K. So what did I do? *sigh* the only thing a crocheter can do with a failed pattern attempt....I unraveled the whole thing.

To be honest, it hurt a bit. I had spent hours on this pattern and now I was going to undo it all, as if it had never existed. Once I had rolled my nifty center pull yarn ball, I again took my trusted J hook and followed the baby/child pattern. I was able to crochet this second headwrap in no time, even after I unraveled half of it to add a few extra rows to the middle to make it longer. Once I sewed on the button and crocheted flower I had headwrap success! I'm happy with my wrap, and love the weaved texured to it. I'll definitely be making more of these but will probably play around with the thickness of the band.

It is safe to say that my crochet ability has greatly improved since August. I have also discovered that I absolutely love ear flaps (I think they're adorable), and tend to place flowers on my beanies. So far I have made about 18 beanies and only three for other people (my brother, and two cousins), but other than that I'm a little like a hoarder and don't like the idea of parting with my beloved hats. The last two pictures show my attempt at a bomber hat. After having some difficulty crocheting with that white yarn, I have to say that I am rather pleased with it. But I still want a real bomber hat, so much!

I drew this self portrait yesterday using my Wacom drawing tablet. I have yet to decide how I'm going to fill it in; watercolor, paint, graphic overlay, a combination of 2 or 3? I'm just not sure yet.
