Project Sneak Peek, The Stairs Are Done!!!

Good morning,

One of the biggest anticipations for my current bachelor project has been updating the stair case to a new and improved and dare I say BAD A$$ glass paneled stair case?! I couldn't be happier with the results. Sometime you have to look at these details when updating a modernizing a space, and if budget allows a change like this will transform the entire space.

Take a sneak peek at the stairs with the newly installed glass panels.

Now take a look at where we started with the stairs in the beginning of the project before the paint and new wood floors came in:

Here are the stairs in progress with the new paint, the new wood floors and also with the interior walls removed.

Finally, here are the new stairs the glass panels:

The stairs are beyond amazing, and when everything is touched up and finished will absolutely complete and tie this space together. I went with a mix of the stainless steel brackets, and mixed that with a dark brown/grew powder coated finish for the rails themselves. This helped keep things modern but still warm and also blended the new stairs with our exposed beams and door frames.

I have a large custom chandelier coming in the end of this week which will be visible upstairs especially with the new glass panels. I just love how the glass just opens up the home even more and keeps things light and crisp.

These stairs went from traditional and dated, to modern and are now a show case for this home. Job well done!!

I wanted to show you one more mini transformation that made a huge impact. The door that you see in the last image went from this.

This made a huge impact to the space, and was done by simply removing the white panels from the glass and painting the metal frame with a metal paint which was applied with a paint gun. That white door is an eye sore no more;)

I plan to share more with you this week such as the 3 newly completed bathrooms. I also have additional shipments coming in so the fun should begin. Can't wait!

A Little Progress Makes Me Happy

Good morning,

I've been asked quite a bit lately if I have pictures of my current project to share. Trust me I've wanted to share it, but there has been so much construction happening that it's just not been "show you" ready. I did take a couple of candid i phone pictures to show you some of the progress. I'm still in construction with bathrooms and the new AMAZING stair case which will be coming HOPEFULLY next week after which things will really start shaping up.

Now clearly these aren't top quality pics, simply taken from my I phone. This is in no way a representation of what's to come since things are very much in progress, but at least you can get a feel for the transformation that this home is undergoing. The once dated home is getting its clean and polished make over for the stylish guy that lives here. It's turning out amazing, and I can't wait for things to keep on changing. I will share more with you as it comes, but this place cleans up really nice, don't you think?

Possibly The Most Versatile Table Ever, The Saarinen Tulip Table

Today I wanted to talk about one of my favorite mid century modern pieces of furniture EVER! OK, I have quite a few "favorite pieces ever" but not all are quite so versatile.

For my current project I chose the famed Saarinen Dining collection Tulip Table. This table was originally introduced by Knoll in 1956. I always love something that can tell a good story. I chose this table because the kitchen is a bit dark with Wenge wood cabinets as well as a pretty dark granite that I salvaged from the previous kitchen design. Bringing in this table is like injecting some light to the space. I also went with a large drum pendant and white bar stools to keep things brighter.

Remember the Breakfast nook scheme?

Well, this scheme changed many times with my ever changing mind. Take a look at the other chair and lighting options as things evolved.

This sometimes happens as other parts of a space come together, or when a client doesn't like something like the Cherner bar stools or the Wishbone chairs ( I can't win em all). I finally settled on the metal dining chairs from Cb2 because my client loves all things metal (I learned), and isn't a fan of anything "walnut". Funny. None the less, going through the process made me want to share with you how versatile this table can be. It comes in many finishes, color variations and sizes. You can even go with an oval shape and use it for a larger dining room. Find one here .

So on to the title of today's post. You don't have to take my word for it, feast your eyes on the MANY rooms that the Tulip table has been styled in. Not to mention how many chair options work perfectly with it.

I'm in love! What do you think, do you like how this iconic table can be used in today's modern times or are you not a fan of bringing back the classics?

Though mid century pieces might not be for everyone (gasp!) one thing is for sure, you can definitely see that this table will pack a space with style. It's like a neutral heel and how that can pull an outfit together effortlessly. This table effortlessly polishes off any room it's put in, and is a keeper in my book.

This Or That, Masculine Bedroom Design

Good morning,

Since my current project is geared mostly around my male client I've had to keep that in mind with the design and style of the space. It's actually been quite interesting for me to push my boundaries and try many new things which is always fun.

Today I want to share with you the master bedroom schemes that I've come up with. I'm deciding between two bed options. Option A with a low braided leather head board or Option B with a high leather head board.

In either case the bed would work fine, the only real difference is the height of the bed. In Option A I would have the versatility to hang art above the bed due to the low height, and in Option B the headboard's height becomes the focal point.

All of these bedrooms are quite amazing! I'm kind of obsessed with the Maralyn Minter art hanging above the very first image, but I also love the simple high white head board set against the all white walls and crisp white bedding which I am a huge sucker for!

Project Sneak Peek, A Couple Mood Boards To Keep Things Going

Good afternoon,

I wanted to share with you a couple more mood boards in my Global Inspired Project. This week is a buy one with 2 bathrooms being overhauled, the new kitchen cabinets getting installed and the lighting to start being installed on Saturday. I will hopefully have images to share with you soon.

One of the boards I'm sharing with you today is for the new kitchen. Take a look.

The old kitchen started from this:

Kitchen Before:

With the light laminate cabinets, and dated lighting and furnishings this kitchen was in no condition to stand up to our new modern design scheme. I am adding dramatic wenge wood cabinetry with flat paneled doors and clean black hidden pulls.

For the furnishings and lighting I will accentuate the new kitchen with some touches of mid century modern such as the famed tulip table circa 1956 and balancing that with industrial touches such as the metal chairs and the industrial pendant lights for the island.

It's very minimal and clean, and perfect for a neutral updated kitchen. I also chose smaller scale bar stools to accommodate for 4 instead of 3.

The other mood board I'm sharing with you today is for the area right before you exit to the pool. It is a wide open space with a recessed tray ceiling that needs something special but can't necessarily block off that area completely or its lovely view to the outside.

Here's what I came up with for that space.

The Lights have a resemblance to sea urchins and are made from straw like sticks. There will be 3 total in varying heights hanging above the table. They are very raw and organic and absolutely make a statement.

I used another ode to my mid century obsessions with the Platner table by Knoll circa 1966. This little gem of a table has a wire base and a glass top to it doesn't take up too much visual space.

Below the table will be a few orchid sculptures created by yours truly. I will reveal those results when I get there, but I'm excited to make another orchid sculpture and will have more of those coming soon to The Cuban In My Coffee for sale if you are interested in orchid sculptures for your own home.

Since these two spaces are side by side, I grounded them with white and light accents to unify them. The mix is quite a perfect balance with masculine elements mixed with just a few touches that still keep it light and airy and not too industrial.

Proleck Sneak Peek, Small Changes Big Impact

Good morning,

So I fell off the face of the Earth for a bit. I haven't really, but I have been very busy with work and life and all things productive. My Globally Inspired bachelor pad has been undertaking MAJOR changes, and today I want to share some of them with you.

When working on a project and updating a space you have to address what spacial issues, architectural designs and the basic style of the home itself and figure out what changes will work with your new design scheme. Sometimes this can be achieved with simply painting a space. In the case of my current project I had to remove certain decorative features to simplify the style, remove interior walls to open the space up, change the entire color palette, change the entire stair design and I even changed some small things like window trims and outdated arches to make the space more modern and current. These little details can change your home completely, and should never be over looked when possible.

Take a look at some of the changes I've been making and how those changes are impacting the overall look and style of this house.

Note that the door was a beautiful door with the iron scrolling details. Simply removing, sanding, patching and painting these doors gave them a modern face lift without the added costs of replacing the entire front doors.

Note that before the dated colors and segmented walls were clearly not marked for a modern transition. This is one example of a room where we removed interior walls and arches which then gives us more space and an open floor plan. This also changed the feeling of the room from being a dark cave to what it is now, light and airy. I also removed all archways throughout this home that I'll show you down the road. Removing interior walls ALWAYS makes a home feel larger. It is a trick that use whenever possible.

Since these stairs are in progress as we speak I don't have the afters for you so in the mean time I will share with you the inspiration and designs. Clearly these wood and scrolled iron details don't scream sexy bachelor pad, and that's a very difficult thing to work around since they are visible from almost every angle of the home. This is one area that we splurged with the budget to make them go from the dated style that you presently see to a work of art. Here are some examples of what is to come.

The plan is to transform the stairs completely. We will be doing this by removing all iron work and inserting clear glass panels held by stainless steel brackets. In the case of this home that isn't 100% contemporary I am going to use powder coated hand rails in a dark gray/brown finish just to keep things a bit sultry. The beauty of these stairs is that they will still reveal the dark wood floors that were recently installed throughout the entire upper level, but they also mix in our masculine and industrial touches with the glass and metal rails. I'm not going to lie to you, this is probably one of the biggest things that I am looking forward to seeing completed. Come on, how amazing are these stairs?!

I'm sorry for the lack of postings, and I will share elements with you as they continue to change. This week I have 2 bathroom installations, and lighting will start going in. I have some pretty amazing lighting happening that is literally to die for that I can't wait to share! I'll also reveal more room inspiration boards.

Project Sneak Peek, The Man Room Baby!

Helloooooo there,

So it's a bit here and there with the posting lately and all I can say is I'm sorry. I can't begin to tell you how busy I've been. I LITERALLY dream of a week on an island preferably with not many people on it (if any) in a home with open shutters and drapes of white slightly blowing in the wind while I look out over sunny blue skies and beautiful crystal waters.......Is it just me?!

On to my project. The happenings of lately are construction and demo of interior walls, adjustments to the doors and iron work, kitchen cabinets and bathrooms finalized, lighting schemes and design happening, paint, paint, and more paint, the newly added modern stair case of iron and glass coming soon. Hmmm, did I miss anything other than my mind? Needless to say, it's a biggie.

Today I'll share with you what a bachelor does with his formal living room. He makes it a man room, complete with amazing desks, cabinets, a bar cart (of coarse) and seating to have cocktails in at the day's end.

Here's where I'm at so far.

**You'll note the lighting is option B from the dining room scheme. I loved it so much that I found another place for it;)

The whole concept if you remember in this home is a global vibe with modern touches. Some of the elements here have a bit of a lived in feel such as the amazing weathered desk and the copper punched pendant lights.

I'm then adding some modern touches with things like the white leather and chrome desk chair,

and an industrial vibe with the stainless steel kitchen cart turned bar

which might I add is a bit of a deal with it's modest price of only $179.

And, how could any room by me be without some touch or nod to mid century style? Barcelona chairs anyone?!!!

The room is then being finished off with walls and ceilings done in the perfect shade of "greige". Mmmm. This is an example of how different styles, textures, elements and colors can be so different but also be compatible at the same time.

This Or That, Dining Room Lighting

Good morning,

I have been working extensively on creating a space for my client that reflects his global and masculine tastes while still working in some chic modern and mid century pieces.

Every now and then I will come across a room that has the ability to use 2 of some item, in this case lighting and I have to narrow it down and choose one. The lucky part is that it is so much easier to do this for someone else than it is in my own home. In this case, my client likes both, I like both, and yet I have to chose just one :/

Here are 2 different schemes for my client's dining room with the 2 different choices for lighting.

Option A: Copper Punched Pendant Lights

In this first room I have these AMAZING copper hole punched pendant lights which I would hang 3 down the center of the tray ceiling. They are quite stunning and have that feeling of something unique and one of a kind which I love! At 16" around, they are definitely going to make a statement especially when paired with the imported teak dining table that's trestled on top of the most amazing chrome support legs. This room is a good example of having something very rustic and raw and mixing it with modern chairs and these industrial wine racks. The lightness of the art, the chairs and the curtains make this room work especially when mixed with the dark pendant lights and the wine racks. It's a good blend of light vs dark and rustic vs polished.

Option B: Clear Globe Pendant Fixtures

In this second option I am simply changing the lighting fixture to a linear fixture that has 5 clear glass pendants that you can stagger in height. I would hang 2 of them as shown so that they cascade down the center of the table providing ample light. When put on a dimmer I could see the magic of such a simple lighting option which reminds me of how simple white candle light twinkles and the affect that has on the mood of a room and then of coarse the memories made in that room. This option also works because it is neutral and takes up little visual space. It is the more modern option of the two.

Project Sneak Peek: Inspiration Boards

Good morning,

I've been working for a while now on my Global Affair project that I posted about last week. It is such a treat to work on something a bit different for me and therefor becomes refreshing creatively speaking. I'm going to start sharing with you some of the mood boards as I go along while things are still in the construction phases just to give you a glimpse at what's to come....i.e. exciting stuff!

The main inspiration for this home is global and minimal with modern touches, and it definitely has a masculine lived in feel to it. Here are some ideas for more foyers with a global feel to them.

Sometimes good design requires restraint which means you have to pull in the reigns for it to be successful. I am making a statement with simple accessories and statement pieces such as the extra long console table and the amazing high back Chinese antique chair. This particular chair is over 150 years old from China. I absolutely love it and was beyond thrilled to discover that my client LOVES it just as much! This is more a piece of art and not a part of today's mass produced Chinese goods. Global design should have these details. Don't you just love a good story being told through some unique item? It doesn't matter if it is told through art, a unique piece of furniture or some vintage score having unique pieces in your home with give it character and life. Don't be afraid of thrift stores, or Indonesian importers. Seek them out and find your own treasures that will take your home to the next level, now that's what I'm talkin about!

New Project, A Global Affair

Good morning,

I want to thank you all for your support, comments and prayers for my brother. I know that they helped. Since I posted about him things have changed in a positive direction and he seems to be doing better and better by the day. I'm praying that this continues and that you will only hear positive things from me in the future.

Today I want to talk about a new and exciting project that I am in the beginning stages of. This project is for a bachelor client of mine who spends a large amount of time traveling, and wants this to be reflected in his home with the exception of the two rooms I am putting together for his adorable little girls. Recently I talked about Design Camp in Atlanta and how exciting that was. There were so many industry "experts" and topics, not to mention a wealth of information on the design industry, trends, and how to propel your business to the next level. One of the upcoming design trends is in fact this "global" or "exotica" approach to interiors which is exactly the feeling that my client wants.

I have an admittedly modern or contemporary approach to my spaces so for me this is something new and different and I'm loving every minute of it. The first thing to understand with this global vibe is what exactly defines it as global in the first place. I think it's important to know that it DOES NOT mean that you simply add a Buddha here, a bird cage there and some suzani print and call it a day. This aesthetic is more the feeling of a well lived in and well traveled home. This is achieved with the juxtaposition of old vs. new, modern vs. antique shiny vs. rustic. The energy in the home should flow well with the balance of the pieces you are adding. Even in my modern spaces, there is a coziness to them that keeps them from being cold. I plan on still including modern pieces, but I'm mixing it up with some unique Indonesian finds from my favorite importers here in Miami which allows them to do the "traveling" for me and gives me the opportunity to pull in those one of a kind elements. The overall feeling in this home will be quite global indeed.

Here are some images to give you a feel for this global approach, or at least how I am interpreting that global approach in to my scheme.

One thing that I think is very notable with these images is the sense of timelessness to the rooms. They could be taken today or 10 years ago and one wouldn't notice. There is something profound to using ancient and antique pieces in today's rooms with the suggestion of bringing something old to new again which is key to good design.

In The Blink Of An Eye

Good morning,

I started this blog originally to talk about our home remodel, my interests, DIY projects, my interior design work and as a vehicle to simply get out there what I love about interior design. I don't often go in to too many details about my personal life and try to keep those things separate, but there are simply times when those things are not possible. Today I am going to share with you what has been happening with me and why I've been gone.

A few weeks ago I shared with you my trip to Atlanta for Design Camp and how amazing and inspiring that was for me. I have some new projects that I'm working on and overall things have been very exciting work wise. Last Sunday I received a call from my sister in law that my older brother is on life support. His body was shutting down and had been induced in to a coma. His liver and kidney functions were failing and his pancreas wasn't working. He also has internal bleeding and things weren't looking good for him. When I was in Atlanta I went to dinner with my brother. We talked about some of his major health problems, but he was so sweet and optimistic about himself and life. He had some goals and some revelations and was looking forward to his future. It was a beautiful dinner, and I left it loving and missing my brother and grateful to have reconnected. With us living far apart and life getting too hectic, it's easy to not talk often. How could things go so wrong so fast?

The next few days things were a tail spin. I received a call that we needed to get out to Atlanta NOW and that he wasn't expected to live through the night. I called my mom and family and we all got there as soon as we could to see my big brother AND to essentially say our good byes.The good news of my story is that he is still with us and he did make it through the night, but the bad news is that he's not in the clear and it is possible that this sad fact may not change or that this could happen again in the future. I can't tell you how seeing someone who you love in this condition hurts so deep down inside.

I can't tell you what will happen with my brother, and have given it to God because ultimately it is in his hands. I can tell you that I am hopeful and the Drs seem to be more hopeful and surprised that things are doing so much better. I am now back home and getting updates by the phone, waiting to hear that there is an end in site to this tragedy. I have nothing to do but get back to life, work, and my beautiful loving little family. So you will see posts again, and you will see more of my work and interests again but they may be a bit sparse for now.

Today what I will leave you with is this. Do not put off tomorrow what you can do today. In essence what I am saying is that it shouldn't be in our last hours or minutes to tell the people you know and care about how much you love them. Tell them often without the assumption that they may already know. Just as it is not worth letting petty differences keep you apart. Life is precious and fleeting and it is a gift that we should not take lightly. I lost my father to cancer a bit more than a year ago, and now I am in this situation with my brother with so many uncertainties. I have to hold on to my faith that there is something beautiful waiting for us on the other side, and I have to keep my faith that my brother will pull through this and that miracles can and do happen. I hope my story is inspiring for you.

The DIY Files

Good morning,

I am admittedly a sucker for a bargain. I WILL be found at the sale rack, and sometimes have to ask myself "would you still want this if it wasn't on sale?" You can take the girl out of Utah, but you can't take the Utah out of the girl! Don't get me wrong, I splurge on quality and where I have to, but I think the best approach is to splurge on the quality items and spend where you have to and save on the rest. Mixing high with low is an art in and of itself and can give your home character and charm, not to mention some great stories to share with your visiting guests.

I am starting a new feature on The Cuban In My Coffee called The DIY Files, which I will save in the DIY tab located in the header of my blog so that you can go back and access them down the road. I will give credit where credit is due, and if I've tried the project myself I will give you the good the bad and the ugly on "how to".

Would You Do Bold Pattern?

Good morning!

This past week I had the fantastic opportunity to spend a few days in Atlanta to attend Design Camp in Atlanta, GA. In case you haven't heard about Design Camp yet, it is a great opportunity to meet and greet top professionals, experts and interior designers, and gain invaluable advice as well as information about what's coming next in interior design. The event is hosted by celebrity designers Lorri Dennis and Kelly Ellis who make you feel like an old friend. I had a blast, and am thankful for the opportunity to have met so many wonderful people. I plan to share some of the love with you readers as we go along.

Today I am talking about pattern. I am admittedly a sucker for monochromatic rooms, which is made pretty clear throughout my designs. It is in fact a bit of a push for me to go over the top with color. Something that we will start seeing more of in coming design trends is pattern play in rooms. These rooms expertly mix funky prints with colors and textures giving you a visually interesting room. It is a bit of a throw back vibe and an ode to the days of Warhol and all things psychedelic, and when done right these rooms are so inspirational that even a girl like me can't help but to love them.

To do pattern play well, I suggest having something that can ground your different colors and prints such as a pillow, rug or chair and it is nice to thrown in a few neutrals just so that things don't get too out of hand. Here is a board I created to show you how you can bring pattern in to your own spaces.

Notice how with a few varying prints and colors that play off each other this room works? I could see this working with even see more pattern through a wall paper, more pillows and window treatments, but regardless it's an idea that I'm loving.

Here are some other examples of pattern play in decor.

This trend also translates well in to fashion as seen in this outfit by Olivia Palermo with these the floral pants and contrasting animal printed heels. Though these two couldn't be more different, they work flawlessly together.

For me this style is a definite must and I'm sure you will see some of this coming in to my spaces.

Project Reveal, The Modern Man Cave Done And Done!

Good morning,

As promised, I finally completed the best damn man cave ever, and it's finally ready for the reveal.

You've seen the grim and bleak before pics of a dimly lit 1970s sketch pad fit for no man let alone a lady. So we changed that, allot!

For me, this was definitely one of my favorite projects ever! I know that's saying allot, but hey it was great seeing this place come together.

I'll reveal more of the details along with the DIY bar that we made, but I leave town tomorrow for Design Camp Atlanta which I am so looking forward to you can read more about here. It will be a few days full of design, industry professionals, fellow bloggers and so much new information for me to take back to you.

Would You Do Emerald Green?

Good morning,

I've been meaning to talk about Pantone's Color Of The Year.....Emerald Green!

Now, I have to admit that I've never been the biggest fan in the world on green, and if any of you follow me you would recognize my admittedly neutral base that makes my heart sing and grounds my designs. But I don't know, there is something about this new take on emerald green that draws me in. There is something so rich and luxe and I dig it! So I had to ask myself, could I do emerald green?

Maybe a small dose of it such as these luxe curtains.

Or a beautiful vase, or two, or three or four.

Maybe just a mirror would do, though I prefer mine shiny and lacquered.

Then it gets serious! What about painting just some of the wall in emerald? This room makes my pulse race, and I WANT THAT BULL!

While I don't think I will be painting my walls green this year, there will definitely be some emerald green coming in to this house. I have my eyes on some emerald green agate book ends, and I'm sure there will be some green additions to my wardrobe so I'm definitely loving this color.

Good Bye 2012, Hello 2013!

Good morning,

As things tend to go around the holidays life was beyond hectic, but in great ways for me with a growing business doing something that I love. I realize that with life going on all around and flying by every day that my good intentions to show you all of the finished results that I've worked on haven't always happened.

For 2013 I have a few goals as related to The Cuban In My Coffee and with Whitney Perez Interiors. I plan to continue blogging and to have some blog features that you can look forward to each week i.e. some consistency. I am having my website developed finally, and I will even link Pinterest and Instagram which I AM FINALLY ON. I plan to tackle more of my "just get it done already" projects here around the house, and I plan to show you more sides to our house which haven't been revealed such as our amazing concrete drive way that I've promised so many times, and an actual house tour instead of small glimpses of our rooms would be nice, wouldn't it?

I also plan to get the much needed pictures of some of my work that I haven't had a chance to show you yet. I'm talking about your house D! It's amazing. I'm also trying to track down the show that I was on for HGTV called Weekends With Luis. Yes, I worked on the design team for a show here in Florida and I never even mentioned it. Seriously?!

Lastly, I want to let you know that I have been updating the Portfolio tab on my blog. I have been working on getting you better images of my past projects and keeping them somewhere so that you can easily access them instead of thumbing through my blog pages, so make sure you check in there for some pretty amazing Before and After pictures of my work as seen here .

Style Stand Off: Stylish Day Bed Seating

Good morning,

I got back on Monday from a lovely trip for 2 that Mr. R. surprised me with to San Francisco for my birthday. BEST husband ever! We left Friday morning and had an amazing time in the city that I used to call home <3

Yesterday was a day of catch up, and now today we're back to business.

I have been working with a client who needs to replace some seating in her living room. The challenge here is that she has a frisky little cat who LOVES the feeling of the linen that our previous chairs were upholstered in, and she absolutely made her mark on them. Hence they need some replacing.

We want something stylish for this grand living room, but also something that little kitty won't sink her claws in to again which rules out linen upholstery.

Here are the options in this week's Style Stand Off: Stylish Day Bed Seating:

Barcelona Day Bed:

I am a sucker for the Barcelona day bed by Knoll which was designed in 1930 and gained much popularity around 1953. I love pieces with a bit of history to them, and this one is no exception to that. With it's sleek design, soft leather upholstery, organic wood frame and its endless versatility you really can't go wrong. This is a bit of a push for my admittedly traditional client, but it is perfect for entertaining and can be made to work in an endless array of styles. The best part of all? Mr Kitty isn't drawn to leather!

Presidio Settee:

The other option for this room is the Presidio Settee from William Sonoma. This stylish little settee is also a day bed type piece, but with it's clever arm rests on either side it provides you with a place to lean on. It is available in a wide variety of colors and textiles including leather. Since there are other options than linen it also serves as a solution to Mrs. Kitty and her clawish ways.

**Some images are not the actual Presidio settee, but they have the feeling and style of what we are going for so I included them for reference.

The question here is what would you choose? Do you prefer the transitional style of the Barcelona day bed with it's hints of modern style all cozied up, or would you play it safe and go to the Presidio Settee and stick with something upholstered with arms on the sides?

Me? I just prefer something that Mrs. Kitty won't destroy again. She's lucky to have such a patient and loving owners!

Who Says Chevron Is Over?!

Good morning,

Recently while I was at Marshall's I stumbled across 2 beautiful white and navy blue chevron printed Louis XVI style chairs. I didn't really think I needed them at the time, but with the high gloss white lacquered frame, the punchy print AND the $129 price tag I wanted them. I decided that they would make good end chairs for my dining room so they came home with me:)

Well, as it sometimes happens they didn't work in the dining room. I can't really tell you why, but they just didn't. I was sad to have to return them so I racked my mind thinking of projects that they might work in.......and then it happened! My office chair that I posted about here was never purchased because I couldn't make up my mind. I took one of them in there and BAAM! Perfection!

Take a look at the new and improved chevron printed Louis XVI style chair that now sits at my desk. Score!

I recently read from some "industry experts" about the trends that are "over" and "passe". Some that topped the list being chevron and Ikat prints. Now admittedly you do see them everywhere, and it is easy to want to see something else so I get it to a point. The problem that I have with this and the same with fashion is that just because someone says something is done and over why should that dictate our love of it? Isn't today's new yesterday's old after all?! Just because something is on trend it doesn't make it always right for us. We have to pick and choose what works and what doesn't.

I say enough of that! Pick something that you love because you love it and not because you are told it is right. Your home and your space should be your favorite place and it should reflect you. There are many ways to mix current trends and make them timeless and relevant for years to come.

I now bring you chevron, here today AND here tomorrow!

Project Sneak Peek, Progress In The Man Cave

Good morning!!! I'm back and recovered from my time away with the holidays, family, traveling and working. I have many exciting things coming soon which I plan to share with you, but today let's get back to business.

I want to share some progress in The Man Cave. It is coming together flawlessly and will be completed hopefully this week with this first phase. The goal here was to make the most of this small space and pack it with ample seating and stylish details. I gave it an industrial feel since it is after all a loft, but kept it cozy as an ode to my client's love for the warmth of traditional styles.

Again, when I started this project things looked like this.

There were no stairs leading to the "loft" space (which makes absolutely no sense). There was no kitchen, and the wood paneling on the ceiling, yea that was throughout the entire home. WoW!

Now, there is a large sectional AND a small scale chair for ample seating. There are beautiful recessed lighting throughout and an amazing chandelier that makes a stunning statement along with the new and improved ceilings. I added sheer drapes throughout to make all of the oddly placed windows feel more uniform without blocking some of the natural light.

It is missing some of the finished touches and final details which I'll share with you soon, but it is looking so good I couldn't wait to share it with you.

Decorating Your Table For Christmas

Since we are close to Christmas, and I mean REALLY close I figured it's a good time to talk about decorating the dining table. Many of us will be celebrating this coming week by having friends and family gather together. It's definitely worth a little effort to make that experience memorable by giving your table some forethought and some love.

I decorated two tables this year. One is of coarse our table and the other one is the table of a good friend and client of mine D. The styles are so different but equally stunning so I'll break them down for you in a bit of a "How To" on decorating your own table for the season.

I used the same concept for both tables, but the styles and colors are completely different. Take a look at 2 tables with the same type of layout and decide which one you like better.

Table 1: Organic Christmas Table And Home Decor.

Here are some pics of D's table and buffet dressed up for Christmas (some of which were taken before and after flowers were added and some in day time and others at night).

D's house is a previous project of mine that is almost complete (pics to come) , and I styled it to be very lush and calm with a bit of a beachy feel so it makes sense that her holiday decor would also have that organic feeling. D loves that:) Her table alone is made from antique pieces of Brazilian teak wood so our decor needed to compliment that and not distract form it. I used muted organic tones and added just a touch of sparkle.

This table is simple, so here's a quick step by step to show you just how easy it can be:

-Take a runner to ground the table and display your center pieces on.
-And layers with square vases. We used 5 in total. The vases were filled with white and silver sparkly ornament balls (which are the same ones on her tree), and the others are filled beautiful white Hydrangeas. We alternated them using vases that she already owned. Found at Michael's.
-Sprinkle down the table with more balls and ornaments weaving them around as you go.
-Add candles everywhere. In this case we took mercury glass votives found at Z Gallery. I NEVER do a table or dinner party without tons of candles, EVER.
-D already had the pine cone Christmas trees so we added those and matched them with more pine cones on her banner and through out her house.
-The silver branches were placed as an added touch which we found at Z Gallery on clearance (whoot whoot).

That's it! Beautiful table done in about 10 minutes using mostly things that D already had.

Now here's another styled table, my table. This year I added color throughout the house for something a little different and you will see that in our table.

Table 2: Colorful Jewel Toned Christmas Table And Home Decor.

This table is simple, so here's a quick step by step to show you just how easy it can be:

- I again took a runner and ran it down the center of my table as an anchor. **My table is extremely long at 130" fully extended so I bought a table cloth from Target for only $19.99 that was 144" L and folded it to a runner size which saved me big bucks! Thank You David Bromstad, we still love the table!!!!!!!

-I took 3 mirrors from my closet that I already had and placed them apart on the runner.

-I went to Home Depot and took branch scraps from the trees that they cut. Cost? Free! I placed those down the center of the table.

- I took the square vases that I already owned (the same ones D owns) and placed them down the table 6 in total because that's all I had. I filled 3 with a wild flower arrangement bought from the local grocery since I had no time to go elsewhere, and the other 3 with an assortment of colorful balls bought from Target and used also on my tree and through out the house.

-I added layers of votives. Some mercury glass ones that I found at Z Gallery 12- $19.99 and the plum ones from Target for $1.00 each.

- I sprinkled the rest of the colorful balls down the table and weaved them through out.

- I added the glittery stars which were from Target for $2.00 each. I bought 12 in total which I place on the edge of charger plates when the table is set for dinner and when not set, they simply blend in.

For the console table, I already owned the garland, and all of the elements aside from the colorful ball ornaments which were also from the variety pack I bought this year from Target.

***My disclaimer. I decorate for Christmas EVERY year so I have acquired things through the years which I change up. The reality is that once you have the basics down such as your candle votives, your ornaments and your vases you can recycle these things for any holiday and use them time and time again. I happen to do this as much as possible because I love to entertain as any of our good friends will tell you, so I am pretty well stocked with the basics and typically only need flowers and extra candles. For you, you can start and add little by little. You would be surprised at how much a couple flowers and candles can make a table festive and make your party memorable for everyone.

Project Sneak Peek, The Man Cave Kitchen

Good morning,

I want to share some of the progress that's happening in the Modern Man Cave. It was surprising to me when I met with my bachelor client and saw that his taste leaned to the traditional side, including the white shaker cabinets and marble counters that appealed to him.

My goal was to keep with the warmth of his preferred style, but to balance it by bringing in some modern and industrial touches.

Here was my original mood board.

And here are some of the pictures of this beautiful kitchen now.

The amazing back splash gave him a touch of the Carrara look he was hoping for, but using these Grecian white marble tiles kept it in our budget. I balanced the back splash with the counters which are an absolute black granite in a honed finish. I love them their natural look.

The bar top is marble with a striped finish and it is stunning! I love that we mixed materials in this kitchen yet the results tie together seamlessly. Again, we kept things to the modern side with the steel support beams that hold up the bar.

The hardware is a brushed nickel with leather inserts on the knobs and on the bar pulls. It is a nice masculine touch to the white shaker cabinets. It also ties the back in from the counters.

The bar stools are my way to give him the black leather bar stools that he wanted, but the sleek look that I wanted. They are absolutely beautiful and were quite a steal! Similar found here .

In case you're wondering what those holes and wires are on the wall....it's for the TV which he wanted over additional cabinetry. I told you this was a man cave. I had to try to keep costs down in this kitchen which was done by using ready made cabinetry and the back splash as well as finding a granite for the counter tops. This allowed us to splurge on the marble bar top and the cabinetry pulls and knobs.

I'll have more to share with you soon. The furniture is coming in the end of this week, right in time for the holidays.

What To Hang In The Kitchen???

Good morning and WHERE HAVE I BEEN???!!!

Let's just say that traveling for 3 weeks straight right before Christmas took it's toll on me, and I have been smack in the middle of catch up. I hope you're doing better than I am and are getting ready for the holidays or better yet that you ARE ready for the holidays:)

Today I want to talk about a design dilemma that I have in a project of mine. I am looking for something to hang on the wall in a masculine kitchen for a masculine client of mine. What I mean is that it has to fit in with the rest of the scheme so nothing "girly" will work.

It will cover an electrical panel, and will serve as a disguise to an other wise eye sore. Here is what I've come up with.

I could do the obvious and find something artistic to place there as these kitchens have done.

I actually like the concept of a series of say two or three to make the wall a feature focal point in the room.

Another option would be to hang some kind of magnetic board to post pictures, and reminders on such as these.

These boards shown are from Ikea and serve as an affordable solution. I like them hung in a series of 3 or 4, and they would also really stand out against our soft grey walls.

My third solution would be to do chalk boards in the kitchen as in these amazing kitchens.

Though the image is a bit grainy (sorry!) the image above is my fav. I could see there being a series of 4 large chalk boards with no frames hung in a graphic box. This could be a huge focal point in the kitchen and with the black honed granite counters that I have in there, it's a major yum!

No matter which way we go it needs to be a major instead of a minor. If you're going to do it you may as well go all out is what I'm talkin about!

Christmas Tree Time

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Good morning,

It should come as no surprise to you that I'm a huge fan of Christmas, and an even bigger fan of decorating for it. I FINALLY bought a pre let tree, and this sucker is huge at 10' tall. I almost wondered if it was too tall, but quickly shooed that idea out of my mind:) I don't know how I strung all those lights every year when all we have to do now is hit a button, best thing ever. I love the idea of real trees, but I find that they don't last here in Florida. I also use pine scented plug ins so our house smells like a pine tree, Ha!

This year I changed things up just a bit and added some red to our typical white, silver and black tree of years past because my daughter asked me why we don't have "Christmas colors" in our house. I also added some deep purple hues and more white.

Here is our red, white, silver and plum tree (with some touches of black).

**Look how tiny Lola looks under the tree. She's there all the time!

Not being much of a traditionalist adding red was a stretch for me, but I'm loving the mix that the red and plum shades added to our decor. I also carried it in it other rooms to tie it together. I believe in a very maximum approach to decorating the tree. More is more in my opinion! My family jokes that it's going to fall over if I keep adding to it, but I call their bluff and so far she's still standing tall.

A Couple of additions this year were more crystal sticks found at Z Gallery here, white feather balls found at Wal Mart for only $1.99 each, plum ornaments found in bulk at Target, and cranberry sprays that I took from an old wreath that I disassembled.

My tips for creating a beautiful designer tree are:

Know what you want your tree to look like. I like to work with couple or a few colors and coordinate with them.

Make sure your tree is well lit! This is a big one so if you don't have a pre lit tree like myself, give all your branches ample lighting. You want that sucker to sparkle.

Add layers upon layers. I like to add branches, ribbon, ball ornaments, sprays, different ornaments, crystals, garland, AND the kitchen sink to our tree, but that's just me.

Think outside the box. I've used star fish on the tree, I've taken items from around the house and added them to the tree, I've made our own ornaments, and I also save ribbon from Christmas presents and added bows to the branches. There are many ways to decorate that don't have to cost a fortune so get creative.

Coordinate with other things in the room or house. I will show you more of what I'm doing soon, but be assured that I add elsewhere such as the entry console, sofa pillows, windows, candles, bathroom etc to make our house decked out.

Project Reveal, Master Bedroom Retreat

Good morning,

I want to share with you the amazing bedroom suite that I created in my Modern Organic project. The home owners were in need of an update, and wanted a room that felt like a get away with some modern touches.

That's exactly what I gave them. Take a look at this master bedroom fit for a holiday every day.

We took this room from very dark and dated to a bright fresh space that definitely has the feeling of a boutique hotel. The trick was to balance out the dark floors and window treatments which I did by injecting the room with white bedding, modern silk shag rugs, and soft linen draperies throughout all in light and fresh hues.

I added an upholstered bed with a nail head trim and coordinated with the mirrored night stands. Mirrors reflect light, not to mention that they add major glamour to the space.

The mirror and the Robert Abby chandelier absolutely seal the deal on this high end room, and the home owners couldn't be happier.

I'm not going to lie, this was one room that I didn't want to leave!

Leaving Town Again :(

Good morning,

we just got back from Thanksgiving in NYC, and now I'm leaving with our daughter for a soccer tournament in North Carolina. Though I will enjoy the time alone with her, I will miss my bed and house:( A girl can only do so much traveling.

Until I get back, here are some bed rooms that I will be dreaming about and wishing I were home snuggled up in (but I won't be, I will be in a hotel in the cold winter air!). Enjoy~
