I was driving down Redwood Road on my way home, and got a text from my friend Emily. She sent a link that stated that the State of Utah Department of Health vaccination criteria had been updated, and I was now eligible to receive my shot. My BMI was 43, and those with a BMI over 40 were able to schedule an appointment immediately.

As soon as I got home, I booked an appointment. Because the news had just been released, and the chaos of all of the different vaccine administration site websites made it difficult to book a slot, my appointment was 90 later in Provo. Taylor was in town that day, and he was grateful that we’d have the reassurance of my protection from the vaccine in a few short hours. I cruised down I-15 with a smile on my face, knowing that this day that I had anticipated and prayed for was finally within reach.

I’ve spent the majority of my life (since the upper single digits) in some type of weight loss attempt. My oldest posts on my other (severely neglected) blog Beauty and the Bypass talk about some of the desperate things I did to try to get to a healthy weight. It felt surreal to know that I was eligible to get my shot ahead of most other Utahns because I had failed and so many weight loss attempts. In future posts, I’ll talk more about starting a new diet and exercise regimen to drop 50 pounds. But on February 25th, I was guiltily grateful that my failure became my fortune.

Once I got to the Department of Health building in Provo, the process was really smooth. Admins and nurses were so helpful. Verified demographics, showed ID, moved to the next station. The nurse told me that she would be administering Moderna, and I suddenly smiled. After researching the different vaccines under consideration for approval, Moderna was my shot of choice. I would have taken Pfizer happily, and J&J/Janssen was not approved for EUA yet.

The longer I go along in life, the more respect I have for Dolly Parton. I grew up with her being the butt of jokes, and I didn’t know her other than big boobs and singing. But she is an extremely charitable woman, and I want to be more like her. She donated one million dollars to Vanderbilt University to help develop what would become the Moderna vaccine (aka Spikevax). I don’t think that vaccinations suddenly give out superpowers, but I left the clinic feeling more joyous, hopeful, and ready to change the world.

Now that I’m five weeks into my Covid illness, I have wondered hundreds of times if I would be here without vaccines. Between a many-colored health history, a list of comorbidities, and autoimmune conditions, I was a perfect target for a coronavirus to strike. And because I got sick during the Omicron surge, the treatment options I had for the acute illness period were limited. I very literally missed my chance at hassle-free access to monoclonal antibodies by one day. Omicron was stealthy enough that two-thirds of the mAb options were plucked away. A future post will talk about the fight I put up to get access to my mAb treatment.

As my immediate family members got sick with Covid, my anxiety grew.

I knew I was next.

The crushing migraine developed.

A variety of symptoms increased in quantity and severity.

My shortness of breath increased. And eventually I tested positive.

I was prescribed new nebulizer vials, a rescue inhaler, and a solu-medrol dose pack. I checked my pulse ox often. I managed the symptoms that I could take an over-the-counter pill for. The classic Covid symptoms began to wane, but the migraine persisted.

Today is day 33 of that Covid migraine. I’m appropriately medicated it, but the fact remains that I’ve had a headache with accompanying symptoms to upend my life for over a month. All during the allegedly “mild” variant surge.

I don’t know with 100% certainty that Moderna saved my life. But I’m grateful that it’s the shot I got.

But’s entirely another to deal with the fallout of what people say to you about said pandemic. Now that I don’t feel like my life is immediately in danger, I am getting so hurt and frustrated over what people say to me about how I should process my experience.

I get it…EVERYONE is tired of talking about SARS-COV-2, everyone is sick of being inconvenienced. Everyone is sick of being patient for life to go back to normal. Everyone is sick of having their “freedoms” stripped away. Some thought that initial few weeks to “Flatten the Curve” was too big an ask, and refused to make any changes in their behavior.

But there’s a subset of people who have been so cautious. Who believe that precautions taken were not drastic enough. Who feel personally attacked by those who refuse to protect others. Who have comorbidities and autoimmune conditions, who are immunocompromised, who are concerned about the possible lifelong complications with long covid, and those who generally want to be good global citizens.

In the Twitter community in Utah, there is an ongoing joke about being an Extreme Masker, based on a comment from Governor Spencer Cox. Many of us use the #ExtremeMasker hashtag as a source of pride, as it makes it easy for us to find other likeminded, cautious, and empathetic individuals.

Okay Twitter, can anyone beat my cloth mask collection? 60 of them right here, not including the ones my husband and daughters use. I switched to N95/Kn95/KF94s last month, so these are relics. Also, should I make them into a quilt? #maskup pic.twitter.com/aNatVrLLZs

Now that I’m 5 weeks into my recovery, even people who love me dearly are tired of my pain and suffering. And I understand…it’s emotionally exhausting to have someone in your life that always has crazy hard shit happening to them. Ever since I survived my bout of postpartum sepsis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, my health has never been the same. I have chronic fatigue/EBV from my bout of mono in 2013. I have a propensity for chronic UTIs that require hospitalization, like my lengthy hospital stay with pseudomonas aeruginosa while I was pregnant with Lucy.

But why do so many people insist on blaming the victim?

I’m a super fun, serial networker with a giant community of friends and loved ones. My online interactions have led me to spend time with hundreds of people I met through Twitter and blogging. I thrive on my interactions with friends, acquaintances, and the person who smiles at me in the gas station parking lot who eventually becomes my gym buddy (#truestory).

But on the flip side, I trudge through more illness, anxiety, and exposure to tragic situations than most people I know. But I refuse to let those hard things beat me down, and I’ll always try to have a smile on my face.

It’s painful and disappointing to have people that only want to interact with me in the good times. Who will dance and karaoke and have a grand old time at a party. And then they are silent when you say you’re in the hospital, or need a hand with a favor to get through an illness. The good news is that I have the emotional intelligence enough to know which individuals are only good for a night partying. And let’s be honest, I haven’t had many nights like that since Lucy was born.

Those who justify their poor behavior through the pandemic simply by exclaiming “It’s all just political!” can just bite me. There is no freedom in having your veins connect to an IV line for treatments. There is no freedom in medical bills so high, that a family with good insurance and a 6-figure income will still struggle to cover the bills. Can you imagine where we would be at if people had been more kind, patient, empathetic, and willing to be inconvenienced? I’m raising a toddler through this, and I didn’t realize there were so many more toddlers in adult-sized bodies.

I just finished reading the biography of Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand. I’ve been gaining an obsession with New Zealand over the years, and I wonder how differently my pandemic experience would have been under the leader of an empathetic leader like Jacinda.

The American Experience that I waded through in 2020 was one full of nationalism rather than patriotism. Do you know the difference? I heard an explanation that “Patriotism is being proud of your country for the good that it does in the world. Nationalism is being loyal to your country, no matter how much evil it does in the world.”

I love my country and have been afforded many privileges and opportunities as an American, but I often find myself longing to live in a society that is less focused on the individual.

I moved back to Utah from Michigan in January 2020, just a few weeks before the pandemic. I’ve always considered Mormons to be the best people to be around in the crisis, because they’re just so gosh darn sweet and helpful. But my experience through the Covid pandemic has really shaken my faith in others from my culture. The flags being flown in my neighborhood were a visual indication of the people I wanted to surround myself with, and I’m drawn to the flags with more color than just red, white, and blue.

Getting vaccinated (which the Prophet Russel M. Nelson referred to vaccines as a “literal Godsend”) and wearing a mask to be a “good global citizen” was just a bridge too far. I keep looking for people putting the Christ in Christian, but I see more selfishness than selflessness. I can assure you that you’ll see freedom differently when you’re in a body that is plagued by chronic illness. Even more so if your 3 year old child, who is too young to be vaccinated, develops a severe inflammatory response to Covid and may have complications for years to come.

I went to the memorial service for a Twitter friend named Kris earlier this month. Because of the pandemic, I wasn’t ever able to meet them in person. Kris had so many of the qualities that I hope to exhibit, especially empathy. They were known for buying anonymous gifts off the Amazon wishlists of people who had been unkind to them. As I interacted with people at the memorial, most of whom are in the LGBTQIA* community, it warmed my heart to see all the pandemic precautions taken. It was such a normal thing for everyone to be in a mask, and the most comfortable I’d been in a public group setting in two years.

I had someone very important in my life text me a few days ago. She has some hard-core pandemic fatigue, and really could only handle being cautious for a short amount of time. It’s important to know your limits, and I know she has coped with a difficult two years the best she can. She asked me how I was doing, but also told me that she can’t handle my medical details. She said “I am really sorry things are tough. We all really hoped you wouldn’t get covid for this very reason. Absolutely will keep you in my prayers.”

It set forth a flood of tears. For someone who loves me so much, it’s hard to see that the grim realities of my life are also a terrible burden. And she isn’t the only one that I’ve had a similar interaction with. Is it worth replying to messages for people just trying to be nice, but honestly can’t handle my reality?

So as we continue to endure the pandemic, I encourage you to try something. If you know someone is sick with Covid, but you don’t have the bandwidth to handle details, simply send a message that says “I love you and you are important to me.” Because when you ask how I’m doing, but then actually don’t want to know, it feels so icky.

Don’t tell them Covid is political. We know this. Because the politics were against protecting the individual, only “freeing” the individual from responsibility from their actions.

Don’t tell them that you’re “SO DONE” with Covid. As a long-hauler, I don’t know if I’ll ever be done with Covid.

The post Pandemic Fatigue is a Poor Excuse for Your Lack of Empathy first appeared on Cute Culture Chick.

Micro-tears in hand skin after Covid-19 diagnosis

But since I was diagnosed with Covid-19 in January 2022, my skin won’t stop tearing. I have so many new cuts and tears in my hands every day. In this picture, I can see 14 spots where my skin has cracked, torn, bled, or otherwise caused me grief this week. My hands are so inflamed all of the time, and the tissues below the skin are swollen. I wash my hands somewhere between 8-20 times a day, and putting on a good hand cream always follows.

Living in Utah, the air here is very dry and brutal for those with skin conditions. My daughters both have eczema, so we have high-quality creams all over our house. I never go more than a few hours without slathering on some lotion, cream, ointment, salve, or balm.

But since my Covid symptoms began, my poor skin has been splitting, tearing, weeping, oozing, and bleeding all through every day. I have so many different products that I’ve tried – CeraVe Moisturing Cream, O’Keefe’s Working Hands Hand Cream (and Lotion and Skin Repair), Elta MD So Silky Hand Creme, The Body Shop Almond Manicure Cream, Cetaphil Healing Ointment, Aquaphor, and sevral CBD lotions and balms.

But my poor hands just won’t stop cracking and bleeding.

Stupid Covid.

Over the last 24 hours, I’ve listened to this song at least 30 times. It is a mashup of 2 of my favorite Broadway songs from the last 5 years, “The Story of Tonight” from Hamilton and “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen. It is a collaboration to be a theme song for March for our Lives this weekend.

It’s a song of hope for our friends, our children, our neighbors, and all those who have been affected by gun violence, particularly in schools. I don’t even know how to come up with words to express the sickness and distress I feel about how frequently guns are destroying families and communities. So I’ll let this beautiful song speak for itself.

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?

Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
Maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay
‘Cause when you don’t feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand

And oh, someone will coming running
And I know, they’ll take you home

Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
And when you’re broken on the ground
You will be found

So let the sun come streaming in
‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again
Lift your head and look around
You will be found

I don’t have the answers to make it all better. But I will be marching this Saturday in Detroit with my friends and my daughter.

I have hope that it can be better.

Three years ago, after over a decade of blogging, I had lost all my spark for writing on my blog. I had recently moved to Michigan (again), was figuring out where I was careerwise, and had felt disillusioned by the emotional temperature of the blogging world. Although I wasn’t targeted in the same ways as other bloggers, there was definitely snark being written and discussed online about me. It really felt like I had said what I needed to say at that point, and I had no desire to continue the website, other than to keep up my archives.

Last Wednesday, I gave a lunch and learn session on Google Analytics for the Social Media Association of Michigan. As part of the presentation, I pulled up my Google Analytics and Google Search Console accounts to show people how to get around the platforms. Two things became very apparent to me.

1) If I’m going to be speaking about Google Analytics and Search Console, I need to have accounts that I’m not embarrassed to show the metrics on. That means I need to be fixing site errors and blogging more often.

2) The post I wrote about surviving my adult tonsillectomy was bringing about 70% of my site visitors. It’s a gritty, gross, detailed post about how bad it was to recover from getting my tonsils out. This got me thinking that maybe I don’t need to worry so much about concealing the tough and gritty parts of my life.

I used to write a lot about hard stuff…depression and anxiety, morbid obesity, chronic illness, financial concerns, and the struggles of living in a commuter marriage. And while my life wasn’t a perfect and shiny, it was true to who I was, and I received a therapeutic effect from writing about it. So I’ve decided it’s time to update my blog more often, and not worry so much about what people think about what I write about.

Despite dealing with some ongoing chronic health flare-ups, life is pretty dang great right now. My husband’s career trajectory is fantastic, I’m getting a lot of fulfillment professionally, and Rosie is growing up into a talented and cultured young woman. Time, career advancement, and frugality has allowed us to knock out a significant amount of debt this year, as well as purchase a cozy mid-century bungalow in Royal Oak, MI. See how cute it is?

I chose to show a picture of the house last spring, when everything was green and beautiful. Right now it’s 15 degrees in March, everything is dead and gray, and I’m counting the weeks until Michigan becomes a verdant, magically green wonderland.

Having a home with adequate space, with places to store all my things, and a newly-remodeled lovely kitchen has gotten me revved up to do something I’ve disliked for ages…cooking. Between experimenting with my Instant Pot and trying to eat more nutrient-dense foods (to overcome some vitamin and mineral deficiencies), I’ve spent more time in the cooking and preparing food in the kitchen in the past month than I have in the last year.

Despite all of the recipes I have tried, my current obsession is making berry cobbler. My favorite combo is blueberry, strawberry, and pear, with lime juice. I’ve been picking up fresh fruit from Eastern Market almost every Saturday. I wash and slice things up, boil the fruit in water and sugar, and then set to simmer and reduce it down to a syrup. I make the crumb topping with a yellow cake mix and butter, bake it, and it’s so tasty.

Parenting my amazing daughter through teenager-hood has been somewhat challenging, but more enjoyable than I expected. I love the woman Rosie is growing up into, and she is my best friend. I love the moment of feeling flattered when somebody tells me that they think that Rosie is my sister, not my daughter. Between mutually obsessing about Hamilton, musical theater, geeky stuff, travel, and good food, she has a lot of interests and skills that are unique to her. I’m anxious for her to get her drivers licence, so I’m not stuck driving her around for all of her school, drama rehearsals, choir performances, church activities, and ballroom dance classes. It’s crazy to think that she is only 2 years away from graduating from high school.

So that’s life for me these days. I’m not going to wait quite so long before I write up my next life update.

The post I Miss Blogging a Little Bit first appeared on Cute Culture Chick.

If I’m completely honest, 2016 was the year of Hamilton for me. I loved the experiences I had with other music, theater, and film, but all things Lin-Manuel Miranda were highlighted my year. I’d like to note that I’m not just bandwagoning, because I wrote about Hamilton in my 2015 Pop Culture Year in Review post, and was preaching the gospel of Ham long before most people had heard of it.

Honestly, if I could only choose one pop culture phenomenon to highlight from the year 2015, it would be Hamilton. How could you not love a historically-accurate hip-hop musical about the young, scrappy, and hungry life of United States founding father, and architect of the U.S treasury, Alexander Hamilton?

Cabinet battles, duels, love triangles, betrayal, and the catchiest tunes this side of 42nd street. Seriously, it is so good. I have listened to the soundtrack more in the last month than any other album in years. If you haven’t listened to it yet, it’s my greatest suggestion that you download it, memorize it, love it, pin Hamilton photos on Pinterest, watch #Ham4Ham videos on YouTube, and make up silly Hamilton memes with me.

But in the spirit of tradition, this post highlights my favorite movies, music, videos, performances, and podcasts of 2015 in my annual pop culture year in review.

2014 was a fantastic year for entertainment! I laughed, I cried, I cringed in disbelief, and I tweeted out commentary as I indulged in these movies, concerts, and shows. This was an interesting year for me, because for the first time in over a decade, blogging wasn’t one of my primary sources of entertainment. I attended fewer blogging events and conferences, and spent more time with my family. And surprisingly, I haven’t missed blogging as much as I expected. I haven’t written a post since May, but to follow up with tradition, I had to make a post for all the things that kept me entertained this year.
