As a sponsor of the My Classic Car show on the Speed Channel, Cut2SizeMetals.com received an advance copy of their upcoming episode – a glimpse inside the private car collection of Jack Rich. Of the over 80 cars in his collection, host Dennis Gage honed in on three French cars from the mid 20th century. They have graciously allowed me to share a few pictures with you to go along with my appreciation of them below.

The first vehicle, a 1938 Delage, is shown to the right. As the caption suggests, it has a center handle door which opens out maybe 8 inches, and then moves back parallel to the car. Not only is it a unique way to open a door, but it makes getting in and out a pleasure.

The 1931 Avions Voisin, with its incredibly low underslung chassis.

Another really unique machine is the 1931 Avions Voisin C20. This V12 has a beautfiul wooden propeller fan under the hood, as well as an airplane-like cockpit, both indicative of the Voisin’s aeronautical heritage. Voisin was an aviation pioneer, and worked in lighter alloys like aluminum for his designs.

The final car of the episode is truly stunning. It is a Labourdette Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal, and although lots of classic cars get the moniker “boat,” this body was designed and shaped using naval carpentry methods. This car was likely rebodied with the Labourudette in 1947 at a cost of $44,000 (or almost $425,000 in 2010 dollars). The Vutotal part was an innovation as well. Lacking the side or top frame of a traditional windscreen, the Labourdette attached the thick glass only to the hood, leaving a unobstructed “total view,” as the name suggested.
If you find these cars as intriguing as we do, this episode of My Classic Car, number 6, will air this Sunday morning and Tuesday afternoon on the Speed Channel. Check your local listings, and let us know what you think of these machines.

I wanted to take a moment to thank the Cut2SizeMetals team for my recent order. This was the first time I’ve ordered from your company, and the first in quite some time, that I’ve purchased copper sheet at all. After searching the web for possible sources, I found your site rather quickly. It was easy to navigate and order what I needed. I’m sure my order wasn’t very large by industry standards, and yet it arrived quickly, and incredibly well packaged!

Because of your speedy service, I have been able to get back into my studio, all the faster! Thanks again. -Karen W.

Thank you to everyone who has called, written, and emailed about how easy our site is to use. Our team spent lots of time thinking about it and fine-tuning it, and we truly appreciate knowing it is helpful to you. This week we’ve added some new features to Cut2SizeMetals.com to make the site even easier to use for new and returning customers. So without further ado, here are the new features and how to use them.

The Shipping Calculator is now on the cart page

We know that when you have a mix of pieces cut to size, it helps to know the total price even before you get to the address page. That’s why we’ve eliminated the shipping page altogether, and added that functionality to the cart. It saves a step, and ensures that you know what your order will cost before you proceed.

User Accounts

You may notice there are a couple of new buttons in the cart box on the top right of each page. New customers can create an account by clicking “Sign Up” and returning customers can Log In here as well. An even easier way is to create an account when you order by entering a password at the bottom of the address & payment page (see the picture below). From then on, you can log in with your email address and the password you just entered.

Tax-Exempt Customers

Some of our customers would like their purchases to be tax-exempt, and we can now accomodate that through our user accounts. Just follow these easy steps, and you’ll be all set up.

Sign up for a user account if you haven’t already.

Email or fax (812) 423-7353 your tax-exempt certificate to Denise (dvowels@esmw.com)

We will flag your account as tax-exempt for future orders.

Let us know how these new features work for you; if you have a problem or suggestion, please leave us a comment below.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, we had the opportunity to visit Louisville’s 21c Museum, billed as “North America’s only museum devoted solely to art of the 21st century.” In addition to the interactive exhibitions, concerts, film screenings, and many other activities there, we snapped a few shots of pieces that intrigued us.

Elastic Empire State

The first picture is an aluminum sculpture by Alex Arrechea called Elastic Empire State, which was commissioned by the museum in 2011 and is one of a series of rolled building sculptures. They are intended as a satirical depiction of the “fluctuations in economics through the metaphor of modified architecture.” (I’m still waiting for that sharp economic upturn indicated by the spire of the building).

American Appeal Bridge

Next, artist Yoan Capote uses paint, fish hooks, and nails to create American Appeal (Bridge). Everything in the picture that is black is a hook, resulting in what must be thousands of metal fish hooks on the canvas.

The final picture is a three-dimensional “tornado” of metal objects, suspended in space a two-story atrium. [Update: Thanks to a friend of the Cut2Size Angle, we now know this piece is Anne Peabody's Wheel of Fortune. Peabody's arresting sculpture is made from carved wooden items like broken eggs and flashlights, and combined with found bits of glass to form a massive funnel cloud reminiscent of the one that leveled much of Louisville over 30 years ago.]

Wheel of Fortune

<del>We didn’t see any artist information, but if someone knows, please post a comment and we will update this post.</del> There were a number of other exhibits that were really hands-on and appropriate for kids, and a boutique hotel and celebrated restaurant called Proof attached if you want to make a day of it.

A short video of our 4400 watt laser flying through titanium. You can see lots of videos of rapid laser cutting in steel, but even when the material costs thousands of dollars, we can still cut this fast!
