Who will succeed President Mugabe?

Things are moving very fast at the moment in Zimbabwe (Robert Mugabe 'under house arrest'). It looks now most likely that the next president of Zimbabwe will be Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The ideological core of ZANU-PF and the army is absolutely obsessed on it's liberation war 'heroes' and they will rally around Mnangagwa as one such hero, and the army will soon oversee his coronation. He has already returned to the country after his short exile in Mozambique or South Africa.

Not only was Grace Mugabe not part of the liberation war (she would have been only a child during much of the war), she had not served in any official role other than an appointment as ZANU-PF Women's League leader. Many believe that Mugabe was being 'used' by Grace to further her own ambitions - and she was interested only in making money and feathering the nests of her children. Nobody believes that she has any vision or plan for running the country or improving the lives of citizens. And more importantly for the military, she is not even that interested in ZANU-PF.

Read the full post on Quora.

Downsides of life in the UK

There are many upsides, but as the question is about downsides, I can list a few, and I’ll open with the biggest downside - I believe it is the root cause of much of the other downsides and negatives about the UK.

First past the post. Our antiquated electoral system ensures that the power balance stays firmly in the hands of the Tories and Labour. It effectively means that neither party ever need win an election: they just wait until the other loses one. They don't even have to provide solutions or win the argument or provide actual leadership.

Read the full post on Quora.

Some things I hate about Britain

The metric system

The completely misguided and pointless obsession with keeping vestiges of the old ‘Imperial’ units despite the obvious convenience and benefits of shifting to the SI (metric) systems.

I find the whole concept the “Metric Martyr” stupid, based upon the fallacious notion (championed by the Daily Mail and tabloids of that ilk) that the metric system - a foreign product - is being forced upon Britain by the EU to destroy the heritage and culture of the UK in some way.

See the full answer on Quora
