Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook saw a mighty surge of activity with rampant tweets and updates all about the recently concluded American Idol Finale and its results. On Twitter, the day was reminiscent of the last Super Bowl where Tim Tebow threw a Hail Mary, shotgun pass for the win. Tweets about American Idol, its results, the many performances, as well as the name of the two contestants that went head to head were pretty much hurled left and right at a rate close to 10,000 tweets per second. Similar reactions were seen on Facebook as well. And, this really isn’t surprising since a whopping 132 million votes were received for the finale.

It was Down to Two

With Joshua Ledet’s elimination last week, the ultimate American singing competition was down to two – Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips. The former is a half Mexican and Filipino, vocally-gifted teenager while the latter is a full-blooded American from down South that has a soothing, folksy way of singing. The previous episode from a day before saw the two go head to head for 3 rounds of singing. Jessica wowed the judges with her first round rendition of a Whitney Houston classic while Phillip got a standing O from the judges for his third round with a theatrical performance of the song “Home”.

Who Won?

Phillips did as he edged out Sanchez in the votes. Out of a global 132 million votes, Phillips snatched the higher percentage although American Idol still has to release the actual results to the public.

Mixed Responses

As soon as the votes were counted and host Ryan Seacrest announced the winner, all of social media went into a frenzy. And it wasn’t because of the hot performances from J-Lo or Steven Tyler (with Aerosmith) early on in the show. Nope, it was because for many, it came as a shock that Phillips would win in the end against a girl who severely outclassed him in singing prowess.

Well, the Twitterverse and the Facebook feeds were pretty much littered with fans congratulating Phillips with the win. However, many of those congratulatory tweets and updates had a bit of soreness as they really felt that Sanchez should have won, especially since American Idol is a singing competition and not a popularity contest.

Along with those congratulatory messages, came those with the hint of a conspiracy theory. Some people believe that American Idol manipulated the votes in favor of Phillips since he was a more sellable candidate to the Middle American market, which leans a bit on the conservative side. Others believe that Phillips winning was a sign that racism is still in the air and that no person that isn’t an American by descent should win a contest really designed for Americans.

What Say You Simon Cowell?

Simon Cowell, one of the original judges of the contest when it started, tweeted to the world what he thought about the contest. As you know, Cowell left the show a couple of years ago to move on to the X-Factor a rivaling singing competition. Anyway, he tweeted that Jessica should have been the clear winner and that something was definitely amiss. He even went out of his way to tweet that while Phillips may be the American Idol, Jessica Sanchez is clearly the World or Global Idol, seeing as a myriad of votes for her came from outside the US.

I call it a quick fix. Why not? Hours before (or was it days before I went for a facial treatment in Facial Care Centre in Eastwood (MDC Building), I was so stressed out with schedules out of control, sleeping hours gone awry, and being out of focus with so many things on my plate. And it showed not only in my face, but I am sure in my disposition as well.

I am talking about the ReFirme treatment at Facial Care Centre in Eastwood. I never had an idea of what ReFirme treatment was all about. All I knew was that the next hour would be a pampering, similar to a foot spa, a manicure and pedicure and a heavenly massage – the things that we women enjoy so much.

Facial Care Centre, Eastwood

On a one-on-one discussion with Ivy, the manager, she told me that I was lucky to have a good skin. Whoa! Thanks so much, I told myself. The thing is, even if I may have a good skin, I have to maintain it. Maintenance is the issue, as it is, with anyone of any age. Guilty! For the past 5 years since I took early retirement from my high profile job, when I had all the time to browse through different duty free shops in different countries, where I could buy these skin pampering things at very low prices compared to those sold in the malls and shops, and try them on my skin with my 3 daughters. Those were the days of jet setting, now I am in the confines of home almost 24/7, and busily working away.

BEFORE ReFirme

GUILTY of not taking care of my skin, it was okay as far as I was concerned. But of course, with age, the blemishes have become apparent, the skin tone uneven, the pores larger than large, the laugh lines that used to be cute laughter effects, more prominent than ever, the spider thingeys a-crawling, and yes – is it sagging skin? And wrinkles? And eyebags. Gosh! The age is showing! I might look 1 year younger than my current age, but I would want to look at least 2 years younger, or 3? Or 4? Or maybe 10? It’s like feeling DEDMA with helplessness, because eventually, the age will catch up with me.

And with lots of things on my plate, juggling the time working, cyber lakwatcha-ing (not noynoying, mind you), taking care of the domesticities, attending to errands, errands and more, and hobnobbing with the “flavor of the moment” in terms of impeachment, imprisonments, TROs, and many many more, and writing whatever is required, will there be any time to clean the face, let alone, apply the moisturizers, lotions, sun screens, toners, astringents, and what have you, that are supposed to be applied on the face, on the skin? Or is there ever time to regularly pop those multivitamins, maintenance meds, supplements, and what have you? There is even no demarcation line between day and night, when I work away the nights to the wee hours of the morning, or sleep during the day – there is no regular sleep. Truly, truly, this is being GUILTY of not taking care of the skin.

Then finally, this chance for a facial. Had Noemi not picked me up from home, I might not even have come. So, it was an hour of pampering I thought.

The moment I stepped in the Center, it was déjà vu – reminiscent of the days, about 15 years ago, when I had treatments at Marie France in Ortigas. Well, the Center was a Marie France Center; it comes under the same umbrella – and shares a secret door with Facial Care Center.

Back to ReFirme. I was told that I might as well try ReFirme. Thanks to Ivy and to NJ, and the attendant staff in Facial Care Center, Eastwood. They made my day – to be surrounded with young, pretty ladies, and charming ones. And yes, pampering ones.

The attendant explained to me each step that she was doing, and in between, I took photos – the before and after photos, to see for myself if indeed there was a difference.

AFTER ReFirme

And boy, there indeed was! The pictures will speak for themselves. The 1-1/2 hour flew so fast, I was falling into slumber in between, but as in a massage, I would want to savor the pampering, so I had to be awake. And I think I snored.

And what did I have? I am telling you – it was a quick fix. It was as if I had a facelift in less than 2 hours. Indeed, I was told, it was a facelift! Looking at my face close up, I saw someone younger (no, I am not kidding). I only wished for the signs of stress to disappear, but I had more. A more youthful skin, maybe, 1 or 2 years younger, I really hope it will be at least 5 years, but I was told, this would stay for 3-4 weeks, and I needed at least 4 to 5 treatments and I could have my wish granted. Why not! I would if I could. Or I should, as what one of my very good friend who was with us at that moment – she immediately enrolled in a full program, because first, she know she needed it, she owes it to herself to keep not only beautiful but more beautiful.

By the way, when I realized I had the quick fix, I wanted to go to a party, or attend something special, like a wedding, or a high school or college reunion. Sayang kasi – I would have paraded my pretty and renewed face to my classmates, and even frenemies. NJ, who invited me over did not even seem to recognize me, when we met in the hallway.

It’s exactly a week now, and I still see a much better facial skin, thanks to ReFirme by Facial Care Center in Eastwood. Look at my picture. Do I not look as splendid as Mrs.Corona? Tell me!

And yes, in my next big event – a reunion coming up, I will surely consider ReFirme.

Continued from “Should Chief Justice Corona Just have resigned?” Part 1

Respect for the Senate

The impeachment trial has earned the Senators the respect of not only Corona, but also of the Filipinos. Turns out, our Senators are intelligent and thinking people. They are trying to be fair. When they ask questions, it can be seen it is because they are trying to understand and uncover the truth.

When Miriam berates the Prosecution, it is because she is being careful with the law and is trying to avoid the collision course that may happen if the Senate acts with impunity and without regard for the other branches of government.

When Senator Drilon asks the questions, he is trying to help the Prosecution that is obviously way in over their heads. He is trying to get to the bottom of things.

Senate President Enrile, from day one, has been a beacon of hope and a shinning example of integrity throughout this ordeal. He has been more than fair and has tried to give leeway to both the Prosecution and the Defense.

He has said that in the event that the Chief Justice himself testifies in the Senate hearing and he is not afforded the respect that is due him, then Enrile himself will resign as Senate President.

The voting public should remember the actions of these Senators and the Congressmen who have been involved in this process. This way, we’ll know if they actually deserved our votes the first time around and should get another shot at public service, or they are simply bench warmers (or worse, absent during trial days).

In fact, it will be interesting to see if Chief Prosecitor Niel Tupas and all his Prosecution team buddies will get re-elected by their constituents in the event of an acquittal.

The impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona is nearing its 30th day. After several weeks of the Prosecution brandishing Corona’s SALNs, bank statements both dollar and peso and announcing to the world all his evil wrongdoings, one has to wonder if at the end of the day, the Chief Justice is doing the right thing by allowing due process to take over.

It’s no secret that as soon as President Aquino took office, he wanted just about anyone appointed by his predecessor to get out. The Chief Justice was one of them, being a known close ally of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Aquino has always been vocal that the Supreme Court, and in particular Chief Justice Corona is a major impediment to getting Arroyo to justice.

Was the TRO the catalyst?

The judiciary branch and the executive branch of government came head to head, or as Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago would say, a “collision course” in December when the Supreme Court issued a TRO in favor of Arroyo to leave the country for medical treatment. The Justice Department disregarded the TRO and immediately stopped the wheelchair bound former president from boarding her plane.

On top of this, the Supreme Court finally ruled on the Hacienda Luisita issue, distributing the long held Conjuangco lands to the farmers. Although the Conjuangco family would receive hundreds of millions of pesos for it, it seems like the decision didn’t sit will. Corona’s camp has claimed that this is another reason for the manhunt against the Chief Justice.

Corona has said time and again that he is only one vote. “How can I be a stumbling block when I am only one vote?” Corona asked.

Looking back…

The collision course that is the Prosecution panel versus Senator Judge Miriam Defensor Santiago makes for great television and memorable copy, but it is not setting a good example for all the student lawyers out there.

Law students and legal experts all over the country stay tuned to the developments of the impeachment trial. It is literally history in the making, but at the same time a fascinating view of the nuances, technicalities and drama of law.

Since the trial began, the Prosecution team has been plagued by several issues that have earned them a severe reprimand from various Senator Judges. Most vocal of these judges is of course, Santiago.

Santiago as the law professor

She has compared herself to a teacher and said she’d give the Prosecution team a grade of 3 (passing but with warning) if they were in class. She has openly scolded the members of the Prosecution headed by Rep. Niel Tupas. Even private prosecutors have not been spared. At one time, she questioned the private prosecutor’s qualifications since he apparently specialized in maritime law.

Men with multiple partners is nothing new in this country, and perhaps in any part of the world. In many cultures, it has become acceptable for men to have a legal wife and someone else on the side. The future king of England did it, ending up marrying his long time lover, Camilla Parker Bowles.

However, recent events in these parts have brought to light the damage that such complications can have on the family and society in general. When those involved are high profile people in society, the affair takes on a life of its own.

The public has become witness to the personal drama of the widow and lover of deceased Rep. Iggy Arroyo, who passed away last month.

Media focus

Being a public servant and close relative of the former President, Iggy Arroyo had become a high-profile personality and so has his death become a news-worthy event. However, what has riveted the public attention has little to do with politics.

The media attention wasn’t even on that his sister-in-law, former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was allowed to attend the memorial service. The public wasn’t even given a recap of the history of public service of the deceased congressman. Instead, all eyes and ears have been on his widow, Aleli Arroyo, and his lover at the time of death, Grace Ibuna.

Aleli’s side

As soon as Iggy died, his widow was giving interviews about the courtship she had with her deceased husband. She has claimed fidelity all this time, continuing to wear her wedding ring and she talked about how it took six years before she and Iggy could get married because his first marriage had to be annulled. That’s how in-love they were at the start.

2012 Theme: CONNECTING GIRLS, INSPIRING FUTURES

It is International Women’s Day once again and it’s time for us to celebrate the successes of the ladies from all over the world! This joyous occasion is annually held every 8th of March with a unique theme that is designated by the United Nations. “Empowering Rural Women—End of Hunger and Poverty” is the 2012 IWD theme, a very powerful phrase that can hopefully remind the governments from all countries that not only women play a very important role in the lives of men but they have also become extremely valuable in the global society that includes both political and economic communities.

That is why it is about time to encourage women, especially those who are living in the rural areas to be educated and most importantly, to acknowledge that they are worth it! They have the right to be heard, to shout out their opinions, to make their own decisions, and to pursue their goals and dreams. Instead of accepting poverty, why not change it into living a better, more secured life? We are all equal and it is crucial that all women know this. It is our social obligation that we adhere to this vital law that has made many men and organizations successful in everything that they do.

Let us teach our little girls that they can freely reach for their dreams and passion by being proactive, honest, and committed. These values will be their foundation that will become stronger as these children grow older, thus making them a confident, smart, and dedicated adult that can make the world an even better place in the future.

“Connecting Girls, Inspiring Future” is the IWD website theme this year so as early as today, let us start linking the importance of our daughters to get a better grip on what is to come through proper education and recognition. As for us older women who are older than these girls, and who have seen the world toppled over and stood back up again, let us be thankful that we have survived from it all and let us celebrate how much we have learned from these obstacles that made our lives all the more meaningful.

Finally, let us never forget that women will always be girls at heart and this is one of the reasons why we can still lend a pretty smile amidst a storm while we quietly cry over something that has grieved and touched our hearts—an admirable behavior that is strong, feminine, and humane.

So to all the women in the world, Happy International Women’s Day!

When it comes to sexual violence, one in ten women have experienced sexual violence or rape. 8% of Filipinas have experienced sexual violence at the hands of their husbands.

One in 25 women between the ages of 15 to 49 claim that their first sexual encounter was forced. Some may be in the form of date rape rather than an incident that occurs in a dark alley and most likely, the offender is someone known to the victim, be it a family member, friend, neighbor or romantic partner.

According to advocacy group SIBOL, the most common form of sexual violence in the country is listed as “rape, incest, spouse or partner sexual abuse, sexual harassment, prostitution, trafficking and pornography.”

Women who experience spousal abuse are likely to have physical injuries such as bruises and cuts. As much as 10% report eye injuries, dislocations and sprains. Women who suffer from physical and sexual abuse are more than likely to have psychological problems as a result of the abuse. These include depression, anxiety, anger and other mental and emotional health issues.

What is also disheartening to note is that a 1995 study done by the United Nations showed that not only have the cases of rape and sexual violence been increasing, but also that a small percentage of the perpetrators are apprehended and convicted.

Emotional violence

Emotional violence is the common form of spousal violence. Up to 23% of married women claim that they have experienced some type of emotional or non-personal violence.

Emotional of psychological violence includes repeated verbal abuse, intimidation, harassment, stalking, public humiliation and damage to property. Mental infidelity and psychological violence includes forcing someone to witness the abuse of a family member, forcing someone to watch pornography or the abuse of pets, as well as depriving the parent visitation rights to the children.

Nora is a house helper now in her 50s. Her older brother’s friend raped her at the tender age of 14. Because of the shame of the rape, she was compelled to live as husband and wife with her abuser even at that age. She stopped school, depriving her the opportunity to get an education and to a better her life. By age 16, she became a mother. After 5 years of living together, Nora separated so that she was a single mom by the time she was 21. Given her lack of education and being burdened with having to raise a child when she herself was still one, she had few opportunities for employment.

Mina is a16-year old Chinese-mestiza attending an exclusive private school when she was raped by her boyfriend at a high school party. She was given a drink that was laced with something that made her groggy, and she woke up naked a few hours later with her boyfriend by her side. Her boyfriend told her it was making love since they were an item, even though she unsuccessfully struggled during the act. She never told her parents what happened because of the shame and because she blamed herself for being stupid. When she and her boyfriend broke up, she became promiscuous and has had a string of lovers in her young adult life.

Here are some health and fitness tips:

Are you having difficulties pushing yourself to work out and burn those fats? Post a photo of a sexy cover model on your wall and you’ll find yourself motivated to exercise and get that figure. In no time, exercising will come out naturally for you! Better yet, post it on your refrigerator door so you will not be tempted to take out that last slice of scrumptiously calorie-laden molten chocolate lava cake.

Hate that frizzy hair when you wake up in the morning? Try sleeping on a satin pillowcase and you would start the next day with great hair. If you do not have time to shampoo and condition your hair before you head out, get that frizz in control by using hair accessories such as sparkly clips and ribbons. You tame the frizz and your hair will look gorgeously different.

They say that laughter is the best medicine. That’s true because laughing could strengthen your immune system as well as lower your stress level. A good-rollicking laugh brings more oxygen to stimulate your heart, lungs and your muscles. So laugh a lot; it’s good for your health. It’s not just a stress-reliever; it is a painkiller, too. So don’t start your day watching the same dreary news, look for funny cartoon shows instead.

Aside from giving your child medicine when he’s sick, it’s also important that he feels your loving touch. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkiller and they could be stimulated by your touch. Quiet down a baby who’s having a disturbed sleep by placing you warm hand over her heart and gently patting her. If your child is old enough, take her mind off her ailment by cuddling her and making simple crafts with her, using materials and things she’s fond of.

Are you planning to go to the spa? Arrive early for your appointment so you will be more relaxed. Drink plenty of water before, during and after the treatment as this could help eliminate toxins released by the body as well as ease the soreness that you feel. Water or tea hydrates your tissues and make your muscles respond better to massage. You’ll get more out of a relaxing and rejuvenating treatment and even earn some compliments on the condition of your skin.

There are more!!!

According to the news, the most anticipated results of the 2011 Bar Examinations will finally be released this coming Wednesday—February 29, 2012, as early as 2 P.M. at the Supreme Court. Last year’s bar exams were held in one of the most prestigious universities in the country, the University of Sto. Tomas in four Sundays last November, instead of the usual “SeptemBAR” month. The subjects are as follows:

First Sunday: Political and International Law, Labor and Social Legislation, and Taxation

Second Sunday: Civil Law and Mercantile Law

Third Sunday: Remedial Law, Legal Ethics and Forms, and Criminal Law

Fourth Sunday: Trial Memorandum and Legal Opinion

The bar exams have surely come a long way. It was first conducted in 1901 with only 13 law students that took the exams and last year’s bar consists of over 6,000 examinees! This exceeds 2010’s 4,847 candidates from which only 982 students have passed. I just hope this year’s result contains a higher rate of new lawyers.

What’s interesting is that after a century of question and answer bar tests with an essay format, 2011 exams comprise of 60% multiple choice questions or MCQ with only 40% essays. After consulting and finalizing this new type of examination with several deans of different law schools, the Supreme Court has come to believe that the MCQ can effectively evaluate the skills needed to be an apt lawyer such as: knowledge and recall; comprehension and understanding; and analysis and application.

Now, there are less than two days left before the upcoming results and I had a sudden déjà vu of this stressful waiting vigil that I have experienced with my daughter who took took and thankfully passed the bar exams almost two years ago. I clearly remember the frenzied anticipation and the rush of pure joy after we’ve found out that she has passed the exam!

Multiple choice or not, all I can say is that overcoming the difficult bar exams and enduring the months before the results is admirable if not courageous. I know how nerve-racking it is to be in this kind of situation and so to all expectant 2011 examinees, you have already done a marvelous job and I wish you all the best!

Kudos to all of you!

Continued from Why we need to be so hard on the prosecutors(1/1)

Using the media

Another tactic that is backfiring on the Prosecution team is the extensive use of media outlets to air their side or present their “evidence”. In fact, the public seems to know more of what is going on and what will happen in Court even before the Defense team has seen and evaluated the evidence and even before it has been brought to the impeachment court.

This places the Defense team at a disadvantage and it is actually against the rules of court. The proper place to present evidence and to talk about the proceedings is in the courtroom, wherein both sides can discuss what is being shown or presented. This is to ensure fairness, since it allows the Defense to object or explain their side at the time that something is brought up.

This is the reason why time and again, the Prosecution team has been berated by the Senator Judges. Senate President Enrile has reiterated the need to stop discussing the merits of the case with the media.

Since the impeachment proceedings began, or perhaps as soon as they filed the complaint, the Prosecution team has gotten as much media attention as the man on trial, Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

However, the media attention isn’t always in their favor. In fact, oftentimes, the attention they have been getting in and out of the halls of Senate is often quite critical. From the way they hastily drafted the impeachment complaint, to the way they seem unprepared for Court, the Prosecution team, led by Rep. Niel Tupas, has been getting a dressing down left and right.

Do they deserve it?

It’s not easy to impeach a person

As the last few weeks have shown, it’s not that easy to impeach someone. Just because the president doesn’t like the Chief Justice because he was appointed by his predecessor doesn’t mean that it’s that easy to get the perceived bad guy out. Even with the very strong and vocal backing of the Executive branch of office, it’s still not a clear victory for the Prosecution team.

Ensuring that your children will be accepted in one of the leading universities in the Philippines plays an important role in turning this dream into a reality. Kids will always be kids and even if they are extremely smart with everything they do, they still need the proper guidance when it comes to leading them into the right school and into a brighter future ahead.

Yes, ahead. It is a seemingly quotidian word that can actually be a part of something big regardless if you’re a child or an adult. That is why AHEAD Tutorial and Review, currently the number one review center in the Philippines, chose this word to promote the importance of planning your kid’s future through equipping them with all the knowledge that they need through proven and certified programs that can fully prepare your child as he starts his journey in college.

Enrolling your children in this one of a kind review center is a great way to secure their rightful place in the top schools of the country such as Ateneo de Manila, University of the Philippines, or de La Salle University. It houses the best trainers and teachers, offers the only test-based review programs in the Philippines, provides courses that involves mind mapping (to improve memory) and speed reading (perfect for timed exams), and trains your child to understand everything through actual application, thus explaining one of the key principles of AHEAD which is “learning by doing.”

What makes AHEAD so special is that their review programs and simulated tests are anything but generic. Unlike other review centers that provide standard set of exams regardless if it is for ACET, UPCAT, or DLSUCET, AHEAD will always give your child a customized series of tests that are specifically designed after the actual format, question styles, and ways of your chosen university. This is what makes this review center shine among others – their continuous research for the latest and more improved materials so they can constantly provide their students a better program, hence supplying them with all the right knowledge that they need. Clearly, AHEAD’s review program is distinct.

Remember, having your kids go through this kind of tutorial does not necessarily mean that they are not intelligent. AHEAD will simply mold their minds, leading them into the right path while maximizing their raw skills and talents by developing what they already have. The fact that this educational institution has been shaping the minds of many young adults since 1995 says a lot of things, with their proven record of their reviewees having the highest passing rate in the top universities.

They even provide seminars for teachers and parents so you can also be prepared with the things that you can do to help your child before, during, and after the review and exam. So do you think your child needs AHEAD to mentally and emotionally prepare them in the upcoming entrance exams? Yes, they do need it because it is an effective way to nurture your children’s minds and at the same time, make sure that they have a promising and successful life AHEAD.

In preparing for this year’s college entrance tests, take a look at AHEAD’s review schedules and rates for more information.

The historical impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona has filled the headlines and news reports of all things inflammatory and controversial, from 40% discounts of high-end condominiums, free plane tickets, peso and dollar deposits, to testing the possibility of a constitutional crisis in the country.

It’s now time to focus on something positive about the trial: the senior citizens.

Seniors play key role

Regardless if you are for or against the impeachment trail against Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, one of the things that have stood out is the exemplary decisiveness and impartiality shown by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile. From day one, JPE has shown fairness and such an acute awareness and astute understanding of the intricacies of the law. It cannot but make all others impressed. He celebrated his 88thbirthday last Valentine’s Day, yet he’s still as sharp as ever.

The other stand out in the court trial proceedings is lead defense counsel Atty. Serafin Cuevas. This Supreme Court Justice is already 83, but still standing tall, able to place objections left and right and use the technicalities of the law to serve the defense’s advantage.

The other Senator Judges that are over 60 years of age are Senator Franklin Drilon, Senator Joker Arroyo, Senator Panfilo Lacson, and Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago. Both senators have figured prominently on the headlines, whether arguing for or against the Prosecution or Defense teams. Their speeches and questions have made headline-grabbing copy and have certainly contributed into shaping the impeachment trial today.

Banks are notorious for secrecy. There is, after all, a need to protect the rights and safety of their depositors and clients. Without banking secrecy laws, individuals and corporations could be at risk for theft and other monetary dangers. In this country, that would translate to family and friends constantly asking for loans that may never get paid, or worse, kidnappers targeting family members for ransom. Also, no one in his right mind would want the public to know just how much money he has.

The recent developments in the impeachment trial against Supreme Court Chief Justice Corona have once again tested the credibility of the banking secrecy laws as it goes head on against a number of subpoenas relating to the trial.

Peso accounts subpoenaed

The peso deposit accounts of Renato Corona have been revealed to be about P31 million for his various PS Bank and BPI accounts. This was known after the peso accounts were subpoenaed by the Senate in relation to the impeachment proceedings. Impeachment is one of the five exemptions when it comes to the banking privacy laws.

The much anticipatedImpeachment Trial of Chief Justice Corona began last January 16. The country waited avidly to see the proof, hear the various testimonies against the Chief Justice and to see our democratic process at work.

Everyone wanted to hear about the 40 plus propertiesincluding a penthouse suite. Everyone wanted to see just how far the political love affair between Corona and the former president extended. A part of the people wanted to see the Chief Magistrate go down in flames. Everyone wanted to see the no wangwang at work and finally see how the current administration is cleaning house, starting with the third branch of government.

Better than Valium

There has been much build up to the weeks leading to the trial, so to actually see things unfold oh so slowly on television is a little anti climactic. Sometimes, watching the proceedings was better than taking Valium.

That’s how slow and how boring it can get. It seemed like to spice things up, the prosecutors and defense teamwould facetiously and excessively call each other and refer to the members of the Senate “your Honor,” although honor has long been thrown out of the halls of Senate, what with some of the clowns that pass for lawmakers nowadays. There’s even that ridiculous show of Mano Po displayed by prosecution lawyer Mario Bautista kissing the hand of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas. Way to get your picture on the papers!

When you say the word “impeachment”to the common Pinoy, he will probably tell you, “Erap.” This is because the only person to have ever been impeached in our country was former President Joseph Estrada.

From Impeachment to People Power

The impeachment trial of former Pres. Joseph Estrada led to a second people power revolution. This is because the sealed envelope was not opened and it led to the revolt of the people. As a result, then Chief Justice Hilario Davide swore in Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as the next president of the Philippines.

The next decade showed Mrs. Arroyo to be competent as a president, although the most vilified one in recent history. Although the country experienced economic growth under her leadership, her entire presidency was marked by serious allegations of corruption. She made Marcos look like an angel and the public has come to view her as the devil incarnate. In fact, several attempts at getting her impeached were put forth, although none of them came to fruition. She even won a hotly contested election, although not without much controversy.

Arroyo and Corona

Although former President Arroyo was never impeached, she is today facing many legal charges. How the Corona trial plays out will have a significant bearing on how the government will handle Mrs. Arroyo’s own case and how the public will receive it.

Chief Justice Renato Corona is one of her loyalists and one of her most controversial appointees. In fact, he is considered a “midnight appointee” since we was appointed to the position within two months before the end of Mrs. Arroyo’s term. Today, he is undergoing an impeachment trial for eight articles of impeachment.
