Some thoughts on dealing with the elusive problem of forgetting

The post “Know the signs of Alzheimer’s” appeared first on The Daily Deception.

“LISTEN, THAT GUY HAS FORGOTTEN MORE MAGIC THAN YOU CURRENTLY KNOW.”

Anyone else heard this one? Or at least something like it? The acknowledgement of what we have forgotten, and what we don’t do or think of anymore. Chances are though, they’re on to something. When’s the last time you sat down and worked on old material? Tried to improve on what you used to do with the knowledge you’ve gained thus far? Magic wise, the last time you worked on Triumph or a two coin routine, improving a double lift or turnover or being caught with only a pen and paper perhaps?

It is actually a very common topic (not a problem exactly) in many different Arts. The forgetting or neglecting of aspects in the Art, that we once dealt with, even if only briefly. So I decided I didn’t need to spend all day talking about why this isn’t great. You should already understand. Instead I decided to explain how I’ve been overcoming the issue. The first idea was I sat down and made a list.

Make a list. MAKE A LIST. JUST SIT DOWN AND DO IT.

It may just change your LIFE

I sat down and made a list of ALL the things I wanted to work on, in every aspect of my life. From magic and juggling, to how I manage money. The hardest part? I COULDN’T BABY STEP AROUND THE TRUTH. I SUCK AT MANAGING MONEY, I DON’T PRACTICE ENOUGH FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS PERFORMANCE TO BE HIS CAREER, I HADN’T BEEN KEEPING UP WITH ANY OF MY GOALS FOR THIS YEAR. Scary stuff to admit, but it was honest and it reminded me what I was forgetting in my day to day life. DON’T FORGET.

Now the list itself isn’t looking at yourself negatively, it’s just asking yourself what you would like to improve. From anything like, get up earlier, to practice ten minutes a day. Just get this stuff onto paper so that you can look back at it and read things you forget from time to time. My list? It had things like juggle more, research Slydini, clean up and go through my magic collection, eat healthier, keep a cleaner house, manage money better, work with fire poi and club juggling, advertise myself more/ work on marketing. Things I admit I wanted to do, and eventually get to. Making the list itself brought so many new thoughts to the front of my mind as well as rekindled old ones that I’m finally getting around to.

And relax, the list isn’t a to do by next week type of thing. Honestly it’s just a list of things you would like in your life/ career more often. I don’t just juggle once and scratch it off the list. Juggling is something I wish to advance in constantly, and when I forget that, it’s nice to see it on the list to which I tend to then go grab some juggling balls and waste an afternoon.

If you do end up making a list, here’s a tip. Separate it.

Put things onto one of two lists. Things you would like to do more often, and things you would like to do. The latter being things like “organize magic collection” or ” buy scripting magic”. Things that you CAN check off a list. That way you can watch that second list get smaller and smaller. Give it a shot, you won’t regret it.

NOW ONTO SOLUTION NUMBER TWO!

This idea was presented to me by a friend and I modified it a bit. Ready? GRAB A DECK OF CARDS AND A SHARPIE. Write out all the concept of magic you have an interest in ( and maybe some you don’t usually) and write one on each card. Shuffle it up and put it away. Then each day I draw a card and what ever it says I have to complete that task by the end of the day. It can say anything from “cups and balls work” or “rubber band magic” to ” read a magic book chapter” or “Perform the same effect to three different people”. This method can be tailored to whatever craft you do, and whatever style you do. If you primarily use cards it can say things like “triumph” or “learn a new control”.

BE CREATIVE, BUT ABOVE ALL BE PERSONAL! Make this unique to you. Things that YOU want to keep sharp on, or work on. What things would be good to randomly have to work on? This Method Goes hand in hand with the previous list as you end up randomly having to try and complete things on your list regardless.

Don’t worry though if you don’t complete it that day, either put it back and re-pick the next day or try to get the old one done as well as the new.

I hope you guys give these things a shot, but above all I hope it gets you thinking. What things do you forget you want to accomplish?Cheers!

What we’re doing and what we leave to you?

What we’re adding

We are all part of a magic circle.

We at The Daily Deception have been hard at work behind the scenes trying to create a great experience for everyone who comes across our page. Not only are we constantly updating the site for optimization and speed but also for user interactivity. We’re thinking of new ways to engage everyone and to make things fun and entertaining. One of the new things we’ll be implementing is not only a chat system with video which we’ll get more into in a bit, but also a points system to allow us to easer give away free things!

A short run-through of what we have already added

You may already see the chat tab on the website that will allow you to have text only conversations with anyone else who has taken the time to sign up for the service. Well this is just the first step. You can also share pictures but there’s is room for more and we will add more. This was added mostly to begin the process of getting people used to having a place to talk to other magician about magic on a magic website. We have already integrated a profile system and sign up system that will allow you to log in with a few of the better social media clients and sign in to this website and make an account that you can use to communicate with other magicians who have done the same. Send private messages and even share pictures and files.

This is something that we hope will flourish into a community of magicians who will work together and grow and in turn we will grow to accommodate. We will soon have open registration for this to happen and will announce that with in the next few days..

Time for the Nitty Gritty

I ‘m going to get right to the point. We (I,Xavior Spade) already know what chat client to implement with the site in order to begin online sessions and random online meetings as well as set jam sessions and lectures. However it does come at a price. A steep price and more than I my self can take on straight out-of-pocket. So I will post here a question and allow you to vote on how it goes. Depending on how you vote that’s exactly what I’ll do. I’ll let the vote run for a week. At the end of the week the vote that wins will be our decision for the foreseeable future. Now as much as I’d like to be able to make this free chances are I just will not be able to afford it as there are plenty of other charges already for the site I’m taking on.

The time has come to cast your vote.

Your Vote Determines Our Direction. Please understand this is all being done free of charge and any money that comes from this WILL be used to advance the website, community and to host events for all of you!

The Chat Trials Have Begun.

A while ago we decided to add to TDD and make it more of a social community. That has been endlessly happening behind the scenes. Today we have quietly launched a site wide chat client that will allow you to talk to registered members site wide, send private messages send weblinks and even pictures. The chat window is similar to facebook in its style but its resizable. Just a warning if you don’t have cookies enabled you can’t use the chat client.

The Next Additions

After this we will be implementing a full membership system that will allow you to create profiles, and even make posts create relationships with other magicians and even host events right on the site for free. We want to add a video chat client but that’s proving to be very expensive and since the site is pretty much coming straight out of Xavior’s pockets unless the money can be raised through other means this may be a bit away. However we can make the video chat premium member ship only and make the first people who donate exclusive lifetime members! That may be an option but we haven’t decided. In the mean time try out this chat client and tell us what you think in the comments below and encourage others to join as well.

CLOSE UP! NO STAGE! MENTALISM! NO NO I JUST DO CARDISTRY!…

A question that floats it’s way around most groups of magicians I’ve encountered is “What type of magic do you do?”. Always with the same inflection and thought behind it; are you close up or stage, mentalism or cards, coins perhaps? Some are prepared for the question (so they think) and others are caught off guard and stammer out a bit of “ummm well I mainly use cards, and some coin stuff, oh and uhhh….stuff.”

As valid as this question may seem, I’ve always wondered why I’m being asked what “type” of magic I perform. Personally I just try my hardest to make sure what I perform is “Magic” at all. When someone watches me perform or asks to see “Magic” I don’t tend to ask “Close up or Stage?”, I simply perform magic with whatever is at my disposal. May that be a stage, a deck of cards and a few coins, or merely the change in the participant’s pocket.

How do I decide what’s magical and what isn’t? … I ask … (sort of). When someone asks me “what type of magic do you do” I respond “what do you consider magic?”… because if I can’t do THAT, I apparently don’t perform magic.

Now I’m not saying you can’t just be a card guy (Armstrong) or take down a room with just a few pieces of metal (Jones), what I’m saying is no matter what you use if you don’t fulfill the expectations (or lack-thereof), of what someone considers magic it won’t be magical. I’ve been completely blown away

Sora Korso

by Lennart Green with nothing but a deck of cards and that’s because my version of magic ( something beyond the normal rules we are taught, luck and chance, things happening that shouldn’t have) was fulfilled tenfold. THAT WAS MAGIC. If he hadn’t done that, fulfilled my expectations, he’d just be a card cheat or trickster.

So next time you get asked “what type of magic do you do?” … ask what they consider magic.

Ernest Ray Earick Born March, 19 1960 Left April 27, 2013

Personally I (Xavior Spade) don’t know much about Ernest Earick beyond his influence, not just on me but on a whole generation of magicians who were lucky enough to find his work. When I first read his book By Forces Unseen I was inspired to do things that I never thought were possible. I know I’m not the only one who thinks like this. If you look around and you see the people who do his magic you can experience something that goes beyond just moves, you experience practice and dedication and devotion to perfect things that others would say are impossible. It has been a long time wish to meet Mr. Earick because of how much I enjoyed learning his moves and thoughts and just wanted to shake his hand and sit back and talk with him. Unfortunately I, and others will never again get that chance and he now joins the countless other true masters of magic in the realm of history and mystery leaving behind his work to inspire for years to come.

I’m truly sorry that I don’t have more to put here but I honestly don’t have any other information. Please keep us updated as anyone gets more information -Xavior Spade

Except for those living in the vicinity of Ernest Earick during the beginning of the 1990s, his name was largely unknown to most cardmen. I had marginal knowledge of him (mostly due to information provided by Stephen Minch) and knew that a book was in the works. (Ernest did meet some heavyweights at the Magic Castle in 1986: Dai Vernon, Ray Kosby, Bill Goodwin, Larry Jennings, and Michael Skinner. These guys would spread the word.) At the time, I also realized that Ernest was probably reticent to showcase or show off. He was genuinely modest about his accomplished mastery. This was partly due to his standards of perfect, a goal he realized was impossible to reach but nevertheless “reaching” toward it was worth the effort. It also provided a sense of proportion and kept one humble.

When Ernest was diligently practicing in his insular “personal laboratory” the advent of “card artistry and hardcore flourishing” was just beginning. His approach to technique was to conceal it. It was meant to service the visual splendor of the ultimate effect. To create this kind of direct purity and visual potency, the underlying techniques were difficult—not only from the standpoint of sheer dexterity, but from the precise timing required. This is why his landmark book (BY FORCES UNSEEN) is aptly titled. Any cardman professing to love sleight-of-hand should carefully and slowly read Ernest’s “Apologia” in his book. Sentences such as the following should resonate with relevant majesty: “From the inception of this project [his book] the goal has been to place my beloved sleights, whenever possible, within some sort of practical and practicable framework.” There are others.

I met Ernest when he and I were invited to participate at Bob Weill’s Inn Event. My flight there required a change of planes in Chicago. While sitting at the departure gate I saw a man playing with a deck of cards. It was Ernest. I walked over and introduced myself. During our preliminary conversation, Ernest confessed that he was nervous about lecturing for the first time in front of magicians. This is understandable because, unless we have learned otherwise, first-time lecturers assume that other magicians know everything and can do everything—an assumption that is way off the mark. I assured him that he would find the audience to be congenial and supportive. For the next hour he dazzled me with material from his book. What I saw also fortified my belief regarding the dramatic disparity between the written explanation of a trick or sleight and how it looks in the accomplished hands of its creator! The same disparity should also be a strong incentive to put in the time and practice. These are the kinds of things that test the extent of our professed love of card magic.

Earnest was a committed swain of the pasteboards.

He was an artist.

No longer having him in the here-and-now is (as everyone so far has noted) is lamentable. As in so many other cases, I turn to the legacies left behind…with gratitude, sadness, and resolve to honor that legacy through my continued appreciation and desire to reach toward the same perfection Earnest always sought.

Onward…

Jon Racherbaumer

At the moment we don’t know too much about it what happened but I’ve supplied a screen shot of something that was giving to me by a good friend.

If anyone has any information please share it so we can make this a great omage to one of magics great thinkers.

Mr. Earick you will truly be missed………

Desperate Acts of Magic was inspired by Joe Gold’s experience as a professional magician, performing over 500 kid’s birthday parties and entering numerous magic competitions. Joe wanted an authentic magic movie, showing great magic performed by a cast of professional magicians. Like a great musical where the songs and the story are seamlessly intertwined, Desperate Acts of Magic does the same, mixing story and magic as one.

In this comedy, when a computer programmer who loves sleight-of-hand more than software gets fired, he decides to follow his passion and become a professional magician. He competes in an international magic competition against a female street magician he has fallen in love with.

This groundbreaking movie features professional magicians such as Jonathan Levit, Rob Zabrecky, Farrell Dillon, Brian Gillis, Hiawatha Johnson Jr., Tom Ogden, Eric Buss and many more. The lead magic consultants were Tony Clark and David Regal. The magic tricks were performed with no special effects.

Free posters will be given out at screenings in NYC from May 3rd – May 5th. There will be Q&A sessions with the filmmakers in NYC after the 7:30pm screening on May 3rd and 4th and the 1pm screenings on May 4th and 5th. Magicians will perform throughout the opening weekend.

Top 10 Reasons to do Card Magic

Below are some of the reasons to do card magic as opposed to Linking Rings.

10….. Card magic is much more exciting then talking about yourself

9…… Cards are great coasters when you’ve finished doing tricks at the bar

8….. The back designs of cards are so cool now at days that only you will appreciate it!!!

7….. Did I mention that you will get all the women you can handle???

6….. It’s much easier to carry around then grand illusions and tigers… What a pain!

5….. Fame and fortune.. That’s right all the money you can handle…. (all results may vary)

4….. You can’t make cool farting sounds with coins..

3….. Did I mention how sexy you look while shuffling?

2….. Get attention while practicing, or make people think your a gambler..

AND THE #1 Reason to do card magic is………………..

THE WOMEN!!!!!… will get annoyed, so it’s good if you’re trying to get away.
