1) The Gadget Show #6 (15.09MB; download) -- I've been reading Wired Magazine for over 10 years, and Boing Boing for the last few. So it makes sense that I'm a fan of Xeni Jardin's work. She's heavily involved in both. When I asked if she'd be so kind as to be on the show, she enthusiastically agreed, and while storms lashed LA (again), Xeni suggested that people were hunkered down with their soy milk and manicurists, and I interviewed her while the mercury soared to 42 degree C (107 degrees Fahrenheit) in Perth.

Thanks for the chat Xeni, it was great fun!

I tell two stories in this podcast, one from Seymour Pappert that most educators have probably already heard. But, since many of my listeners are not classroom teachers, but parents and other community members, I want to bring home the point that although much has happened in the last decades and the last century, how we define the job of teaching has not. I also tell a personal story at the end, but just give it a listen.

The world can be divided into two groups of coffee lovers. Those lucky enough not to be affected at all by the unsettling effects of caffeine and those who are. Two decades ago there was little on the market to appease those of us who could not tolerate the jitters but that didnâ€™t mean we didnâ€™t yearn for the heady roasted flavours of a full-bodied Columbian. We were left with little packets of powder that tasted more like cornstarch blended with dehydrated mold and glue, still common in Europe. Then the processing plants devised better methods of decaffeination. The coffee tastes better, but still not as rich as regular coffee. But take heart. Here is a way to reduce your caffeine intake without sacrificing flavour. Try blending regular decaffeinated coffee with coffee made from beans naturally low in caffeine such as Arabica. Less caffeine and more flavour.

As we understand pedagogy (#6) and linear content (#1), we first mourn that they have become so dominant, but then realize how powerful they are in concert. 5) Future Tense Podcast for March 7, 2005 (3.85MB; download) -- Nicholas Negroponte says the solution to third world poverty is educating children. He aims to do that will a new computer that will cost about a hundred bucks.

Negroponte is founder of the Massachussetts Institute of Technology
Media Lab, and author of the groundbreaking book, "Being Digital."
He's come up with the design for a machine that third world countries
can buy in bulk to give to children.

The machine would be light, but rugged. And it will be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet. It will run on the open source operating system Linux.

The project has the backing of Google, computer chip company AMD and
other companies.

6) A New Twist on Roasted Potatoes (0.92MB; download) -- By Linda Bramble
Hereâ€™s a twist on roasted potatoes. All youâ€™ll need is Balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and potatoes. Long potatoes work best, but any shape will work. Cut them into wedges. Place in a bowl and cover lightly with olive oil. Roast in a medium oven until golden but not yet crispy. Remove and mix with a light covering of Balsamic vinegar. . Add salt to taste, return to the oven until theyâ€™re crispy. Serve immediately. For added enjoyment, mix in wedges of sweet potatoes. The textures and the flavours are scrumptious. I served them with roasted chicken, but if youâ€™re in a hurry, grab one already cooked at the supermarket. Stir-fry some vegetables like broccoli and mushrooms and youâ€™ve got a week-day meal fit for Saturday night.

There are many different kinds of vinegar, each with its own character but, the most interesting, says food essayist Edward Behr, is red-wine vinegar because it has more depth, more nuance, more flavour to balance sheer acidity. And the best tasting is the vinegar, says Behr, is the one you make yourself. The method is easy: when red wine is left open to air, a white crust forms on the top called â€œmotherâ€ ---this is a sign that vinegar bacteria is present and gradually turning the alcohol and oxygen into acetic acid and water. Use good wine, says Behr, avoid sweet wine. If the wine contains thirteen percent alcohol, add one part water to three parts wine. Make it in a glass jar. Donâ€™t allow contact with metal, fill just than about half way. Donâ€™t seal the jar, put it in a dark, warm place. When the mother forms, remove it carefully and throw away. Use it as soon as it tastes good.

In an article in the Wall Street Jounal Online by Kelly Spors dated February 27, 2005, she discussed online travel sites and the addition of taxes and fees at the last puchasing minute. This practice makes the online travel appear to have cheaper rates.
In our travel stories segment the Desert Inn of Yeehaw Junction, Florida was featured. This is the place to go for a good gator burger!
