As 2010 comes to a close, I'd like to pay homage to one of the biggest food trends of the year: meatballs. Nestled on the relatively quiet Stanton Street, The Meatball Shop explodes with energy and a buzzing crowd until their 4 a.m. close. Packed with city-wide foodies, BK hipsters, and LES regulars, the vibe is young and grunge-chic. Laminated menus dictate your meatball options, accompanied by a do-it-yourself marker to fill in your order. Pick from beef, pork, chicken, or vegetable balls, and adorn with the sauce of your choice: tomato, spicy meat, creamy mushroom, parmigiano, or pesto.
And, you can even chose if you would like them "naked," over pasta, or served on a mini slider, a baguette hero, or brioche bun. A sprinkling of greenmarket salads and seasonal sides are also available for noshing.

We recommend the pork ball with spicy meat sauce on a hero, with good friends after a great night, and a $3 P.B.R. nightcap to wash it down.

Tuesday's Fad features ANN YEE

This Tuesday were featuring the beautiful drapery and funky, adrogynous fits of local designer Ann Yee. While her first line launched only last fall, her experience designing for labels like LaRok, Elizabeth and James and Alice and Olivia made her a pro at draping knits and creating cool pieces for New York fashion lovers like herself.

We're dying to get our hands on that white draped top--not to mention our obsession with the pockets sneakily hidden in seemingly every outfit!! We were lucky enough to catch a quick conversation with Ann and discussed her two loves: designing clothes and New York City.

Daily Razzler:
We cannot stop gushing to our friends about how much we loved your line at Fashion Week. The cuts and colors are perfect for going from the office to out with friends or hanging on the weekends; we love!!
Our adoration aside--what do YOU love most about what you do?

Ann Yee:

I love creating things that can make someone feel confident and cool. My biggest reward is seeing people wearing my designs in this way. Also, the process is actually fun from start to finish, from researching, collecting fabrics, sketching, draping, trim shopping, etc. It’s very hands on which keeps it personal and I’m lucky I can call it my job! I don’t think I’d survive at a desk all day…

Daily Razzler:
Ummm yes we hear you on that one! We're pretty sure the only thing that could make a lot of people suffer long hours at a cold cubicle is...New York City. So what is it that you love about this city??

Ann Yee:

Makes my job so much easier --- there’s constant excitement everywhere you go and inspiration surrounds you 24/7. The people are definitely incomparable and something is always going on. I LOVE the flea markets – from Hell’s kitchen to Chelsea to the Brooklyn Flea – there’s always great treasures to be found that can spark countless ideas!!

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving and as if our post tryptophan haze wasn’t bad enough, the reality that we’re going to be stuck in New York while the rest of the art world basks in the sunny glory of Miami Art Basel this week is just about sending us over the edge. The Daily Razzler isn’t one to feel sorry for itself though so we’ve compiled a few fun events to get our minds off missing out on the contemporary art party heaven that is taking over Miami this week:

1. The Grain of Emptiness exhibit at the Rubin Museum offers Buddhism inspired contemporary art, featuring the works of Theaster Gates, Sanford Biggers Wolfgang Laib, Atta Kim and Charmion von Wiegand. While the notions of emptiness and impermanence might be the melancholy sentiments you’re feeling at being left out in the cold this week—the show will leave you with a zen-like happiness, and new perceptions of the influences of contemporary art.

2. The opening reception for the pop-up shop, A.R.T./Module R is his Thursday, from 6:30 to 8:30 in Brooklyn. If you’re determined to stay in Manhattan this Thursday, opt instead for the Groundswell Art Auction—might not be an oceanfront event but aiding the organization dedicated to mural arts and social justice will definitely make you feel good in this celebratory week for the arts. The Benefit will feature a silent auction with more than 50 works for sale by artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Vik Muniz, Swoon and Massimo Vitali.

Schatzberg will be on hand tonight to sign copies of his new book, Women Then: Photographs 1954–1969 and discuss the film—you can get some artist interaction even stuck back here in the city!

Recovery Sundays

On this sunny Sunday morning we found our recovery in the delicious form of the $10.95 brunch special at the East Village gem, Flea Market Cafe. The decor reflected the name perfectly; a collection of antiques, collectibles and garage sale finds that made the room feel more like your grandmother's basement than a New York restaurant. It was cozy and fun to look around as we sipped the complimentary coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice--pondering everything from vintage signs to a bike tacked up on the wall. We settled on brioche french toast with fruit, tomato/spinach/chedder omelet with home fries and salad and a hot baguette with jam. As the days grow colder we will definitely return to Flea Market--for the unbelievable deal and mouth-watering meals--next time we're trying the carmelized apple pancake!

Flea Market Cafe is located at St. Marks and Avenue A...and also boasts a sunset menu from 5-7 every day; $15, $17 or $19 for 1, 2, 3 courses respectively, plus a glass of wine or beer! We hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving! This week for Friday's bite we're doing things a little different. Below is a photo and brief synopsis of what we wait 364 days a year for. Feel free to comment on who did it best. Enjoy! xx

From 12:00 on this glorious Thanksgiving clock: Sugar and salt-cured ham; whipped mashed potatoes from scratch draped with old-school, rich, silky gravy; orange, cinnamon cranberry sauce; [middle] sausage, mushroom, chestnut, and ciabatta stuffing; creamy cauliflower and brussel sprout gratin with toasted breadcrumb and pine-nut topping; classic maple whipped yams; steaming hot homemade buttermilk biscuits; and finally, tender, juicy turkey with herb butter. <3 lk, the little foodie.

Thanksgiving with a Santa Fe twist. Oven-roasted Turkey with sage, rosemary, and thyme. To top it off, thick home-made, herb-seasoned gravy, spiced with fresh pepper. In the back, Home-style Green Bean Casserole featuring hand cooked onion rings, walnuts, and cremini mushrooms. Mashed cauliflower florets sprinkled with fresh chives and pepper, and of course, a healthy dose of butter. The stuffing brought a spicy kick to the dinner table in true New Mexican fashion: turkey and jalepeno pepper sausage with diced and toasted whole wheat bread, sage, celery and onion, all baked to perfection. The Roasted Sweet Potato Puree with maple syrup and toasted pecans was a huge hit, as was the slowly-simmered cranberry relish with orange rind, cinnamon, and lemon zest. I hope your Thanksgiving was as tasty as mine! MC

Get ready. Starting with juicy, deep fried Turkey dressed in homemade gravy. Salty, flavorful stuffing with smoked chorizo. Baked maple glazed sweet potato. As a New Yorker, we pride ourselves on being super fast-paced. We like everything done quick and efficiently—with no mistakes. I mean walking in this city is the equivalent to a slow jog! With this being said, I trust that a majority of us focus on the destination rather than the journey—am I right? Next time you find yourself hustling to get somewhere on time, take a brief moment to notice your surroundings. You’ll notice everything from a cozy coffee shop to a gallery full of colorful, intricate pieces. In my case, I found myself drawn to a small vintage shop in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen.

ArtsEcho Galleria was too adorable to pass up—with its mod outfit on display outside to the flashy sign that drew me in. After speaking with the owner of the store, I learned that she and her business partner were famous theater performers in the 1970’s and had traveled all over the world accumulating pieces from Paris to Milan. I also learned that ArtsEcho is the only vintage shop in NYC dedicated to supporting fiber artists selling everything from unique jewelry to vintage clothing. Additionally, they promote sustainable fashion by providing vintage fabric to emerging designers, which results in a collaborative in-house line of couture apparel. They even use the space to host events such as concerts, readings, and fashion shows!

I told her that while I studied abroad in Rome I worked at Valentino, and immediately the designer was pointed out all over the store—like this vintage lime green peacoat.

I found so many gems; a 1950’s “housewife” winter coat, an original Halston classic, a Christian Dior suit, hats from the 1920’s and 30’s, and top it off a Pucci handbag original. She was so fun too, making me try on everything—like this leopard jacket she’s had since the 60’s, love it!

The Hole, 104 Greene Street: Hot Glue Hullabaloo; collaboration between downtown art legend Kenny Scharf and Virgina Beach art collective Dearraindrop (originated in my own Providence, RI!) Until December 4, this ground-floor gallery houses the wild collaborative of bright pop-ed, cartoonish, street-junk influenced paintings, sculpture and even a mini blacklight disco that are sure to brighten those gloomier post-thanksgiving days.

Mixed Greens, 531 W 26th St, 1st Floor, Perfect Strangers, exhibit of Leah Tinari (older sister of a close friend of At's!) She incorporates photography into her paintings by working off digital images and turning them into painted collages of her world. We're loving Tinari's funky, cariacature-like approach to imagery--makes you feel like you're in on the subjects' amusing jokes... The images in Perfect Strangers in particular were created from snapshots taken of visitors during her last exhibition at the same gallery—interesting documentation of the relationship between viewer, artist and exhibition. Plus, Mixed Greens as a gallery space is right in tune with the daily razzler’s mission; it was founded in the aim of promoting and supporting emerging artists, visions and spaces—their original goal was to make contemporary art accessible to the public—props for that!

And while you’re in the neighborhood, definitely wander next door to the James Cohan Gallery, 533 West 26th Street, for Roxy Paine’s, Distillation. Part of the artist’s Dendroid series, this winding, metallic structure brings to mind the knobby roots of the now exposed trees winter has revealed. It is very different to see the structure in this environment than the open air of the Metropolitan rooftop that his piece Maelstrom inhabited, but in some ways equally compelling in inspiring thoughts on the aesthetics of shape and materials.

For those razz girls staying warm on the Upper East Side this holiday, don’t miss Claire Pentecost’s exhibition Interior Studies, at the Higher Pictures Gallery, 764 Madison Avenue. These black-and-white photographs of pencil etchings—made on studio and apartment walls and ornamented with pushpins, flower petals and plastic toys—are the perfect whimsical, imaginative imagery to inspire your holiday shopping and get you seeing the world in an ingenious if a bit weird, light.

As a newly certified Manhattanite, I love exploring all the things this island has to offer. From the featured “Friday’s Bite” to the trends of “Tuesday’s Fad”, the options for entertainment, culture, and fun are seemingly endless. This week, however, I decided to take a trip across the Brooklyn Bridge to enjoy brunch with family and friends at one of the most celebrated breakfast spots ‘outside the island’, Downtown Atlantic.

The service and food were just what I wanted on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and with some good company and conversation mixed in, I found myself in utter brunch bliss.

The meal started with a basket of fresh, warm spiced-carrot bread – just the treat for our cold, winter hands. From there, we ordered the restaurant classic “Downtown Eggs Atlantic”, which boasted two perfectly poached eggs layered over a toasted English muffin, smoked salmon, and dill hollandaise. My sister tried the down-home family special - “Fancy Eggs and Buttermilk Biscuits with Southern Gravy”. The gravy was a hit with the whole table, featuring a special, spicy kick that is part of the Downtown Atlantic secret sauce. The Bloody Mary’s tasted garden fresh, and the bakery situated perfectly near the exit gave us something sweet and savory to nibble on as we ventured out into the Brooklyn cold.

Saturday's Spot--this week's hotspot was Don Hills. The buzz around this Soho hangout soared when it reopened during NYC Fashion week, penned as a welcome alternative to the bottle-service glitterati of the meatpacking district--glamour but with a downtown edge. Helmed by Paul Sevigny and Nur Khan; this spot did not disappoint, delivering grungy, stripped down fun. We spent much of the night dancing to rock remixes and Miike Snow, the collaged walls with green neon lights blinking only added to our euphoria grooving with the laid back crowd in this hazy heaven.

Every women has their signature perfume; I have Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, my friend is a fan of a fruity little bottle she got in Paris, and let's just say my mother's Elixir Des Merveiles by Hermes still lingers in the air 20 minutes after she's left. However Gerald Ghislan, founder of Histories de Parfums, is doing something exclusively different. By traveling all over the world, Gerald listens, reads, and discovers; drawing inspiration from every one of his trips and encounters. Born in France and brought up in Morocco, Ghislan created a collection of twelve rare and delicate perfumes. Always having been surrounded by the Mediterranean, Ghislan developed a unique palette and nose for gastronomy, learning the art of mixing and distilling specific flavors.

Each one of these twelve bottles is dedicated to some of his favorite writers; Casanova, George Sand, and Jules Verne, to name a few. The bottles tell the brief history of each legend mixed with the aromas and scents of their childhood and overall life. All made in France, they are meant to compliment and work alongside one another to tease and awaken the senses, all while recognizing familiar flavors like; rosewater, lavendar, and vanilla. Wednesday’s Je Ne Sais Quoi—HUMP DAY…well let’s be honest, feels a little more like bump in the road day…but there is good news to be had on this mediocre Wednesday in NYC. It comes in the form of Piola, an Italian pizzeria in Union Square. And for once, we’re not talking about the pizza. From 8pm to close every Wednesday, Piola showers its female diners with free wine included with any entrée. FREE WINE. This past Thursday, Big Drop NYC teamed up with the new leather accessory line, METALSKIN, to host a fabulous party that had shoppers like myself in awe over all of the colorful wrap designs. Mondays Marks--With the monumental sale of a Roy Lichtenstein painting at Christie’s contemporary art auction last week ($42, 642, 500 to be exact) it seemed a fitting time to explore a contemporary art venue. The New Museum, on Bowery and Prince, currently houses two exhibitions: Free and The Last Newspaper. Both were insightful, at times upsetting, but ultimately engaging, explorations of the ideological properties of the daily news. At a time when we are inundated with information on all fronts—the reconstruction and reinterpretation of media—both social and original press—was hugely eye-opening. The works spanned about 40 years, the most recent being an installation of collages/paintings updated with new pieces whenever he was inspired by the news, by Nate Lowman (ironically a sort of media magnet himself, known almost equally well for his art as his relationship with Mary Kate Olsen and appearances on the New York social circuit).

Both exhibits tapped in to the collective experience that the news creates—and focused on how these ties and disconnects have been heightened by the “freedom” that comes with social media and the internet. The most striking of these was Lisa Oppenheim’s “The Sun is Always Setting Somewhere Else.” (2006) Created from Flickr images of sunsets she pulled from US soldiers stationed in Afghanistan and then re-photographed against the backdrop of her own horizon in New York—the forged connection we can make with each others experiences stood out as simultaneously painful and beautiful. In The Last Newspaper, artists used everything from mixed collage to complete re-creation: Alexsandra Mir redrew the front pages of tabloids like The Post, the bad news of the day appearing in almost child-like scrawl. Hans Haacks’ piece, News (1969/2008) made only from a RSS newsfeed, paper, and printer, was humming and hah-ing in the corner as we perused—tirelessly spitting out the minute by minute tragedies and triumphs of our world—creating a giant heap of paper on the floor. While the works in these exhibitions are not necessarily visually striking—their message is powerful. So much so that as I walked out I couldn’t help but notice a wall of advertisements, graffiti unceremoniously sprawled across—looking almost identical to some of the pieces within the show. Bottom line; check out the New Museum because this is one artistic discussion we are all apart of.

63 and sunny this weekend led to a lengthy and boozy brunch on Saturday before the Heineken Inspire Encore concert--mental notes: Donnybrook's irish brunch leaves a little something to be desired in the food department, pirate Mike at Iggy's on Ludlow and Rivington makes a mean (variations of mild, medium, hot and VERY hot) Bloody Mary and a combination of Diplo tunes, free heineken and black light walls is pure perfection.

However, all this led us to spend much of today curled up in bed. The still balmy weather forced us out around 3 though and after wandering the New Museum on Bowery (check Monday Marks tomorrow for a full recap) we were ready for some good and greasy recovery grub. Pulino's, Keith McNally's relatively new restaurant, shone bright red across the street and surprised at the rare lull we saw through the windows, we hurried over.

While the service was spotty and the pizzas (funghi/pancetta and salame picante) upsettingly bland--the spectacular mozzarella burata, flavorful cannelloni beans and peaceful buzz of eating in a golden glow of liquor bottles and hanging prosciutto, made 5pm Sunday recovery at Pulino's something to look forward to as the weather cools and getting out of bed is increasingly challenging.

If you're not on your way already, get to the 13th Annual New York Chocolate Show ASAP. It started at 10 a.m. today and will run until 7 p.m. It is America's largest display dedicated to worship all things chocolate. Chocoholics: Some of the best chocolatiers come from all over the world giving out FREE samples of savory truffles and bite-size chocolate bars at EVERY station. The chocolate is obviously delicious, however it's usually the mind blowing displays that draw so much attention. Try the Jacques Horres hot cocoa while you gaze up at statues of past presidents and even couture dresses, made entirely out of chocolate. So grab that one friend you know would die for this and get to the Metropolitan Pavilion fast. We're talking; melt in your mouth truffles, fondue fountains, wine tastings and pairings, and chocolate gift baskets.

To commemorate the Eater awards this past Monday night, we felt it necessary to highlight Torrisi Italian Specialties for this Friday's Bite. Winning "Restaurant of the Year" in both NYC and nationally, Torrisi is one of the most wonderful restaurants in Manhattan, but may not be what you expect. On the brink of Little Italy, this 18-seat, no-reservation burrow is reminiscent of an old-school Italian deli. The menu is written each day on the chalkboard, including five antipasto, one pasta, choice of two entrées, and a dessert tasting. No vegetarians, no allergies, no substitutions, no nonsense.

The walls are peppered with cans of tomatoes, breadcrumbs, and dried pasta and the vibe is refreshingly comfortable. But, don't let the casual charm fool you. Chefs and owners Rick Torrisi and Mario Carbone are extraordinary chefs with experience at some of the greatest fine dining institutions in NY, and you can taste that experience with each fleeting course and each exquisite bite. As Sam Sifton put it in his NY Times two-star review, "It is not fine dining, but it sure is fine."

Photography is the latest obsession in New York. If you don’t have a Nikon D90 digital, trust me, you’ll have one within the next three years. However, not everyone has an eye for photography. There are very few, and among those few are one of my dear friends, Chelsea Van Houten. Noise Girl is a brand that she started in 2009, which is her signature photography name. The Noise Girl blog, is a collection of fashion photographs, most of which have been taken on the streets of New York.

I asked her about her initial inspiration and main muse—New York City.

“I initially started shooting fashion and style when I discovered The Sartorialist (The Sartorialist). I was fascinated by how Scott Schuman captured the essence of random people on the streets. By focusing on a unique jacket or a vintage top, he brought life to every piece that was featured. In a way, Noise Girl is quite similar to The Sartorialist, but it has an edgier and younger tone. I've always had an appreciation for the small details in an outfit and Noise Girl allows me to bring them out center stage so people can see: even the smallest things matter.”

About NYC, “Shooting in New York City is amazing. I have so much fun roaming the streets and photographing strangers who have a unique style. At the end of the day, it's not just about the photographs but the interaction I get to experience with the people I photograph. I love seeing and hearing their reactions when I ask to take their picture, it inspires me to keep shooting.”
