Also it seems that the latest iteration of their Sense Android skin is a vastly scaled down version, stripping away all the superfluous. I think that's a fantastic idea. As Android gets better looking and useability I think it's important that the phone manufacturers pull back on their custom skins. HTC's Sense had become quite bloated and laggy. A streamed lined version will make a big difference. I like that they are focusing on other things to differentiate their phones.

For example today they spent a lot of time talking about the phone's camera, both hardware and software and of course HTC is making a big play with Beats Audio.

So HTC, go for it! I can't wait to try and see these new phones with my own hands and eyes! Here are a few pics and some links to great coverage of the phones and the event.
What's most interesting about these apps is that they do not include BlackBerry Messenger, nor is it compatible with BlackBerry Enterprise Server which allows for super secure email, though RIM is making BlackBerry Fusion available for trial (this is their new security tool that allows them to work with iPhone and Android phones).

This is a very big upgrade and brings some much needed functionality to the device beyond what I've mentioned above. The other big update is the Android App Player which allows developers to easily port their Android apps over to the Playbook. This adds a whole new world of apps to the device, which previously only offered meager apps.

I have to say, I'm pretty excited about this. From the reviews I saw from CES, where this OS upgrade was shown off to tech writers and bloggers, it seems to offer a lot of cool stuff. The integrated inbox, which RIM excels at, brings together mail and messages from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, and BlackBerry Bridge now creates all kind of exciting functionality between your phone (like using the phone's keyboard to type on the Playbook).

So if you picked up a super cheap Playbook during one of the recent sales, then this upgrade is a MUST have! I'm half tempted to pick one up if there is another big sale on the device. I sold my Playbook this fall. After initially really loving the device, the lack of apps, email and stuff really made it hard to use for me. Constantly logging into webmail and calendar was a huge pain in the ass, and the Bridge app which brought this stuff from the phone to the device was slow and crappy. Now that so many bugs have been worked out, I'm really curious to see this device again.

[via CBC.ca]

Now there is a confluence of issues here. HTC put out some of the first LTE phones and got a bad rap for really atrocious battery life. Heck even their non-LTE phones were crap when it came to battery life!

But they were putting out some really great looking phones. I'm thinking of the HTC Incredible which had a really unique back and industrial design.

That's what they put out two years ago, and this is where they are now:

This is the HTC Endeavor and it's God awful! COME ON! It looks like one of the old shitty Windows Mobile Phones HTC made a decade ago. Somewhere, somehow design at HTC got really kick ass (think the Nexus One which is still a gorgeous phone!). And equally quickly it disappeared! Gone. Vanished!

HTC isn't gonna get back on track until it starts making beautiful gear again. Samsung has done a really great job with the Nexus phones it's made and the Galaxy line of phones (a few duds for sure, but many are quite hot). But Samsung is missing something HTC has always had and that's killer build quality. Sorry Samsung but I've yet to handle any Android phone you've made and not feared for its super plastic/cheap feel. Combine build quality and killer design and HTC can get back on track.

On a final note, I think it may also be time for HTC to retire Sense. Sorry dudes, but Android 4 is beautiful and Sense is shit. It no longer enhances anything, it only slows your upgrade schedule down. So here is your recipe for success: killer design, killer build quality, and be the FASTER handset manufacturer to offer Android updates and upgrades.

At the beginning of the year, I opted significant changes in my life.

First, I decided to change my job. And although it's taken me the better part of a year to extricate myself from Music and Film in Motion, I am feeling so great about the decision I made. Thankfully I am surrounded by great friends and now partners, who have decided to take the leap of faith with me into entrepreneurialism. The decision to leave MFM begat the idea to launch Copperworks Consulting! Which has been pretty awesome so far.

Secondly, knowing that I was quitting my job to start a new business, I needed to get things in order around the home front. I had already been looking to move but I changed direction entirely in what I was looking for. Instead of a bigger house, I opted for a duplex and living in one of the apartments. This meant downsizing instead of upsizing, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I purged SO much. Baggage I had been carting around for years and years. I had a pretty small, little house. I was amazed by how much crap founds its way into the house.

Downsizing was a conscious decision. I live alone, why do I need a big house all to myself? In terms of wasting resources it's pretty brutal. It's also changed a lot of how I think about my own consumerism. I am now quite limited in what I can put in my home, so I am constantly forced to rethink purchases. It's fantastic! It's also lead to a decision not to buy into the craziness of the holidays this year. No gifts!!! I'm not buying anyone anything, and I have told everyone not to buy me anything. It's so liberating. Witnessing the oncoming madness of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is fantastic! Not having to deal with the stress of of the holiday buying season, even before it starts, is really a great feeling.

Thirdly, this year I found love. And although it wasn't meant to be, and I am now single again, it was a really incredible experience. I met and fell in love with a fantastic woman and in return I was loved. It's a pretty amazing thing! I truly hope she remains a part of my life, and finds the happiness she deserves.

Fourthly, I made an incredible friendship with someone I've know for a few years now. Working together he quickly became an important adviser and confidante in matters both personal and professional. It's not often you make a new, super tight friend, someone you know has your back.

There were times that were really difficult this year. Telling my mentor of the past 11 years that I was leaving my job would be right up there. Work was no breeze this year with replacing half of the staff at MFM, it meant no vacation time for me. Non-stop travel, which while exciting and fun and both for work and pleasure, it meant being away from home ALOT! With all of the change I was undertaking this year, it meant a lot of juggling which at times was almost overwhelming.

Despite the difficulties, I feel blessed. After the really shitty years of 2009 and 2010, 2011 was a year of discovery. I learned so much about myself this year, that I regret nothing. I have a roof over my head, a car, a dog, family and friends that I love and love me, food in my belly, toys to play with. What more can one man ask for?

Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world." - Jack Layton

I heard the news this morning about the passing of Jack Layton. I must admit, while I admired him, I was never a huge fan. And yet, today I find myself rattled by his loss. Perhaps it was his message during this last election, one which preached hope and optimism. It was a message that engaged the electorate.

I think about his legacy unfulfilled and I get angry. I think about what the next few years of Parliament are going to be like without his voice of calm and reason.

In a time of ironic detachment, armed with sarcasm it's hard to see through the bullshit. It seems like it's uncool to have faith or to believe and not just in a religious sense. And yet, I read these last words of Mr. Layton's, words which are raging through Facebook and Twitter like a Northern wildfire, and I am moved. I want to rip off my detachment and serve.

These words, I hope, will be a call to arms for Canadians everywhere, of every political stripe. Step up, serve your country, your communities. Let us remember that we are surrounded by friends and neighbors. We are not alone in this world. Let us serve one another, help another, dare I say it, love one another.

Here's to tomorrow morning, a new day, a better day.

I am officially the proud owner of a MacBook Pro 13. And I love it. Damn you Apple!! Already when I go to work, I'm wondering why the trackpad isn't so big and awesome, nor is the keyboard which I used to love on my Dell. I find with the MacBook I don't even need a mouse most of the time. I even wonder why the quit, minimize and maximize buttons are on the right hand side instead of the left hand side where they clearly make so much more sense (how can this be after only having the MacBook for about 2 weeks and a total of about 12 hours on it in that time thanks to conference travel?!).

The design, as has been said a million times, is stunning. It feels more solid and rugged than any other laptop I've ever owned. And don't even get me started on the battery life so far. It's INSANE! So my only question is this? Why did I wait so long to jump ship?

The answer to that is an easy one to answer, the price of the hardware. I still have a bit of trouble with it, but I was at least smart enough to learn from some friends who have successfully purchased many items from the Apple Refurbished store! I save a truckload of money going that route.

As I am about to embark on a new adventure both professionally and personally, this will be the ideal machine to see me through everything ahead of me.

It's an interesting device, basically shrinking the Palm Pre model down to a 2.6 screen. I have to say, for me personally, and of course recognizing that I have playing with this phone, it just seems like an awful idea.

Sure I can see some people wanting a smaller full-featured smartphone. But I think this was wasted effort on behalf of HP/Palm. By all accounts the phone we all want, if we even want a Palm handset anymore, is the Palm Pre 3. It's the shit. And it's not due out for a while yet.

I like posting the Engadget reviews because they are usually very thorough and even handed. Check out their conclusions. Who knows, this might be the phone for you!

[via Engadget]

We have them at work and I have them at home. Even the cheap machines, in my experience are well made and durable. I've had a higher end Dell and have been thinking about going higher end again on my next machine (currently running Inspiron 1464, pretty middle of the road, though speced out nicely). When I saw this pics I stopped in my tracks. Now, all I need is for Dell to release a 14" version, or better yet a 13 incher! Check out the pics and teaser video!

[via Electronista]

Short form, dude has MacBook stolen while in NYC. He uses software to track the machine down and starts Tweeting about it. NYC residents following him start to trail the alleged thief. Posse forms and they confront him getting the laptop back. Dude in Ottawa, while happy to get it back, was also VERY concerned for the safety of the posse! Imagine if things had gone violently? This is apparently a very credible person and sighting! Exciting times. The 7" Playbook launched not long ago and there has been speculation that the next version of the device would be the 10" tablet.

[via Electronista]

They are making a real effort to put out some super nice machines. This ProBook 5330m is not exception. Holy Jesus, I love this machine! It's 13 inches, and portable, and with it's brushed aluminum body, pretty hot! I would seriously consider this for my next machine. My only issue with HP computers is that in Canada, they use a stupid assed keyboard, that I just cannot type with. Don't know why, must have something to do with official bilingualism, but seems stupid to force that on everyone. And I'm French Canadian!

That aside, this is one sexy beast! Check out more pics and details by clicking the link below.

[via This is My Next...]

Things are crazy busy at work which alone would likely warrant a bit of a break, added to that a move and a few other personal things, and man, oh man, it's no wonder I haven't found any time to blog lately.

Anyways, world, I just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten about you. I'm gonna to try and post a few things each week to at least keep some semblance of activity, but posts may be few and far between for a while.

I'll be back with the usual regular blog at some point, so have faith! We'll be back together before you know it!

Dennis

Such an old fart! Went back to Magnolia Cafe for another round of pancakes! Delicious.

Been in panels all day. Jason went up to the Apple pop-up store and finally got his hands on an iPad 2. I'm happy cause I didn't want to see him cry!

Tonight we're going to see the Foo Fighters documentary, and then we have bands to see!!! So glad we're finally getting to the music! Should be a fun day!

So another panel skipped out on. I have to say I'm finding the interactive panels to be quite frustrating. Surprising too given I have never seen a music panel I didn't like in my previous years here. This seems to be a fairly widely held view too. Not sure if it's because the interactive community is not as "practiced" at doing panels as the film and music industry folks are? You certainly see it in panel moderation, and the fact that 80% of the interactive panels I saw did not come off as billed in the description. We speculated a bit too that it might have something to do with how much this component of SX has grown so rapidly. By all accounts the numbers this year were up significantly. Some of these "experts" are also pretty new to brand new industries. Might make it hard to really find great panelists.

Bigger than that, though certainly influenced by it, is the issue of panels not being as described.

BIG NEWS!!! We saw the Foo Fighters on a surprise show. They played for 2 hours! They played the whole new record, and a ton of hits. Open bar which we of course took advantage of! Really great night.

Two late nights in a row and bit to drink last night are catching up. Oh well. No time for crying! Onwards and upwards! Lots of panel stuff today to hopefully make up for yesterday.

To start today, brunch at the South Congress Cafe! So delicious! We ate here last year and had to come back. So glad we did. I think we'll probably grab breakfast here again before the week is over! I also had a Bloody Mary with my brunch, pretty awesome!

Have seen two panels so far today: Start Up 101: Core Conversations For New Non-Profit Arts Organisations, and I'm Not a Publicist, I'm a Critic. First one was pretty cool, more of an interactive conversation, the 2nd started to become a pissing contest between 2 of the panellists.

Next up is: Pimp My Movie: Online Marketing Makeovers. It was an excellent panel, lots of great ideas and suggestions about how to build consistent marketing to help promote your film for free.

The sun has broken through the clouds and I can't wait to get outside for a bit!

No plans as of yet for this evening. Might try to indulge my geekery though and hit up the ARM party and see some gadgets! I must admit to a serious love for the MacBook Air 11. Seeing lots of them and seriously want one. So thin and beautiful!

In the end we decided to have a quiet night in. Really feel like the old men of SxSW, but it's a marathon, not a sprint! I am really, really excited for the music to start. Right now my top picks include Emmy Lou Harris, Josh Ritter, Duran Duran tomorrow night and Raphael Saadiq.

Here are some pics from our day!

<img style="display: block; We were a bit later getting out of the gate this morning, plus we could not find parking once we got downtown. The room was full!! Oh well, there's always next time?

Had a great breakfast at Magnolia Cafe today. Holy Jesus! Huevos Rancheros and a short stack of the craziest pancakes ever. I got whole wheat with blueberries, and Mike got gingerbread with bananas, and we each swapped one. Best idea ever! Great meal.

Then off to the convention centre and much circling for parking. We got Mike registered and grabbing a coffee to sort out the rest of the week. Jason went to a bunch of panels today. Not much jumping out at me today. Probably will sit in on something though.

Panels turned out to be a bust for all of us today. Every panel Mike and I have stepped into ended after about 5 minutes. Suffice it to say our timing is a bit off today. Finally made it to the a panel! You're Baby is Ugly: Evaluating Your Film Honestly. Should be good.

Today was not out day for panels. The 2pm panel we saw SUCKED a first for bot Mike and I. Even a mediocre SX panel is better than most. This one stank. We had to leave.

Tonight we are going to the Salt Lick, our favourite BBQ place from last year. There is a road trip, so we're gonna try and join that! Not much else for tonight. A quiet night I expect.

What an eventful evening! We got bussed out to the Salt Lick for dinner, it's a famous BBQ place in the outskirts of Austin. Our bus made a wrong turn into the parking lot, so badly it wasn't funny. Wound up damaging a stone wall as they tried to back out of the tight spot. Was pretty silly.

After we finally got to the right spot we ate. We ate meat, like men, with out hands. And once we had finished consuming meat, some of us ate more meat. It was glorious. I honestly think that is the most meat I've ever consumed in one sitting in my entire life. Unbelievable. Mike made it on the plane! After some suspense today, he's on his way for sure! Will be here by this evening. Yay!

Well, we finally made it on site. I have to say how much I love Austin. There is an energy here that I love. I can totally imagine a different life here.

Woke up early and hit the fitness centre. It was tough but I'm glad I did it. It's only gonna help as we get closer to the end of the trip.

So we registered and got all our loot. Will go through all of that later. Trying to lay out our plan for today and the next few days. Currently listening to Majora Carter talk about grass roots community development and engagement. Very inspirational. Good choice for our first panel.

Jason and I inspired and building our schedules for the day!

Major Carter, sadly not many people in a huge room, maybe not the best choice of venues!

Next up I'm hitting The Last Broadcast: Entertainment is Social-What's Next. Get to the airport for 7am, to get there 2 hours early. Only to face the onslaught of March Break travellers. Holy. Fuck.

What a nightmare. Get checked it only find out that flight is over booked and there may not be room for me! Yikes! Make it through customs and security, and run like mad to the gate to make sure they know I'm there and not to give a seat away! At that point they essentially walked me right onto the plane, though there was still time left. Still, much closer call that I like!

Everything worked out but it was pretty unpleasant! On route to Denver, then on to Austin!

Seated in the last row on the plane, in the aisle seat. It's kinda like being in a mosh pit! The bathroom is right behind me!! Yikes! Oh well, must remember that being on the plane trumps all the crotches in my face this morning!

Dude in front of me who insisted on pushing his seat
all the way, which put it about 6 inches from my face.

My face....need I say more?

WORST. LANDING. EVER. TURBULENCE. AND THE PLANE FELL OUT OF THE SKY!!! Not all the way, but still it was pretty awful.

That's it for now. Hanging at the airport resting, drinking coffee, and posting blog stuff! Could be much, much worse! I could be back in snowing/rainy Sudbury!

Yummy guac for lunch!

After a lengthy layover in Denver, I have finally arrived. Day one got off to a very inauspicious start. We arrived at airport early only to have flight cancelled. Plans all screwed up now! We can no longer fly down today, we're all flying solo, getting in at different times.

The best part was we still had to check in, check out bags, go through security and wait. At least we had some funny moments. Like when Jason's laptop was swabbed and tested positively for explosives!! So funny. The security dude said he'd never seen that before after years of service. They were all kind of scared to be honest!! Too funny.

Jason and I are now on bus to Toronto to grab flights out Friday and Mike will join us Saturday. Living in the North rears it's ugly head today! The bus ride is punishing. Absolutely awful. Jay and I are two big fellows and let's just say being squeezed into two seats together we know one another much better now. Much better than either of us would have ever wanted!

4:15pm - still on bus. Almost in Toronto. Can't wait to see the hotel we got booked into last minute. Hope it's not a total craphole. Very tired and looking forward to a restful night's sleep. Early flight Friday AM.

Hotel not bad, not great either. Good hard bed. Asleep by 10am. for 6am final packing, shower and race to airport. Sitting in the hotel bar having a drink trying to decide what to do about supper and I dumped a pretty much full beer on my lap. Good fun that was!

Seriously.

I kind of get the appeal of just buying one banana. BUT...do you really need to wrap each one? And if you do, does it have to be in plastic?
