That successor was Liam McIntyre, who assumed the role for the remaining seasons. In contrast to Whitfield’s understated approach, his Spartacus was loud and boisterous. This routine was appropriate since the hero was now a leader of men instead of a sneaky slave. The catch was that he lacked Whitfield’s natural charisma, so he felt like a blunt instrument by comparison. As hard as McIntyre tried, Spartacus became less interesting under his watch.^[2]

Although Varney died of lung cancer after Toy Story 2, hope came from his friend, Blake Clark. He took over as Slinky, but you could hardly tell. Finding performers who can both act and sing is no small feat. Happy Feet mostly accomplished that with its celebrity voice cast. As Gloria, the penguins’ star singer and hero’s love interest, the filmmakers got Brittany Murphy. She delivered the lines well, especially during the emotional scenes. You could hear the conflict in her tone as she struggled with her feelings toward the protagonist. She’s also comfortable with the singing. Her voice didn’t have much power, but it didn’t need to be for the pop songs she covered. Regretfully, though, Murphy died of pneumonia prior to the sequel.

Thus, Happy Feet Two brought in Pink, who’s practically Murphy’s opposite. Her voice was more powerful, which helped her carry the songs. On the other hand, she didn’t sound as natural with the spoken lines. That outcome wasn’t surprising, given she’s primarily a singer. It also didn’t hinder the film any more than its other flaws, as this second adventure largely sidelined Gloria. Consequently, you wondered why the creators bothered with such a high-profile replacement.^[4]

6 Frieza

This galactic emperor has had multiple voices across the Dragon Ball franchise. Starting with Dragon Ball Z Kai, though, Chris Ayres became the mainline English voice of Frieza. He quickly won fans’ hearts with his theatrical performance. His prim and proper cadence suited the villain’s vanity. Beneath that effeminate tone, however, was an underpinning of murderous menace, making him equal parts entertaining and intimidating. Sadly, Ayres’s battle with pulmonary disease ultimately claimed his life. This event necessitated another voiceover change, but there wasn’t much difference.

Enter Daman Mills. He was an understudy to Ayres and periodically swapped out as Frieza before finally assuming the role full-time. Similar to Slinky, the difference was practically imperceptible. Mills matched Ayres to such an extent that you’d have been hard-pressed to tell them apart. You could argue the merits of a secondhand performance, but why fix what wasn’t broken?^[5]

5 Manute

Most figures in Sin City were violent killers, but Manute was among the most intimidating. That fear factor came from Michael Clarke Duncan, who was as reliably menacing as his other villain roles. Although he spoke as slowly as most characters, his lines somehow sounded far more significant. That’s no doubt thanks to his measured movements and terrifying vocal depth. When he was in the room, everyone else seemed small. That’s what made it so shocking when he died of respiratory failure. Nevertheless, the filmmakers weren’t finished with Manute.

Although Sin City: A Dame to Kill For featured many of the same characters, it also recast several of them. Dennis Haysbert joined in as Manute. He was another imposing gentleman with a deep voice, so it’s easy to see why the creators recruited him. The sad part is that he seemed like a few degrees less than Duncan through no fault of his own. He matched the former actor’s beats, but he naturally wasn’t as effective. The whole time, Haysbert felt like the second choice, which he unfortunately was.^[6]

4 Immortan Joe

Mad Max villains have always been inhumanly imposing, and Immortan Joe was no exception. Hugh Keays-Byrne had a massive presence as the cult leader in Fury Road. Despite a mask covering his mouth, he exuded rageful authority through piercing glares, powerful body language, and a booming voice. Other times, though, he unleashed the same animalistic savagery he’d previously displayed as the Toecutter in the original Mad Max. These films each had a new set of characters, so you bought that repeat casting.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bucked that trend by serving as a prequel to Fury Road. While most of the villains returned, Keays-Byrne had already passed away. Lachy Hulme then stepped in as the new Immortan Joe. He didn’t have quite the same physical presence, but he did boast the spooky eyes and meaningful movement. His Joe was more methodical—quietly scheming rather than charging forward. Hulme’s methodical performance worked for that alternate take. Moreover, it enriched the character overall.^[7]

3 Iroh

Avatar: The Last Airbender may have focused on a group of kids, but a standout character was Zuko’s wise uncle, Iroh. This old war vet lost his son and eventually saw his nephew as a surrogate. Throughout the show, he encourages the boy to renounce his hatred through both sage advice and mischievous humor. Makoto “Mako” Iwamatsu masterfully voiced this mentor. His nuanced delivery betrayed years of experience, giving ample weight to both the patient teachings and the sorrowful father. Every bit as endearing were his moments of goofy humor. These aspects could have created an uneven character, but Mako married them seamlessly for two seasons until his untimely death from esophageal cancer.

The final season replaced him with Greg Baldwin. Although he didn’t have a ton of lines in this last part, he was clearly doing an impression of Mako. The quality varied. Sometimes, he sounded exactly like him. Other times, the difference was laughable. Oddly enough, he seemed to play up the Japanese accent. Since it wasn’t his natural dialect, his delivery became stilted in the attempt. In the end, Baldwin was a pale imitation.^[8]

Many viewers thought Heath Ledger’s swan song was the Joker in The Dark Knight, but he started making another film soon after. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus saw him play Tony, a shifty philanthropist hiding his true past. Ledger recalled his romantic lead sensibilities to deliver a thoroughly charming turn. His smirking routine was perfect for a con man. It was like watching a darker version of his earlier roles. That sense sadly became a full-circle moment as Ledger died of a drug overdose partway through production. Thankfully, the movie’s premise provided a solution.

The eponymous Imaginarium lets the characters visit a dream world, so the filmmakers determined that Tony would change his appearance upon each visit. That line of thinking led them to cast Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell as alternate versions. Taken is the ultimate nightmare for parents, so it calls for an equally nightmarish hero. Bryan Mills is a retired CIA agent who now wants to be there for his daughter. His dogged detective skills and combat experience make him a one-man fighting force, and he only gets scarier as he approaches his quarry.

When time is of the essence, Bryan makes people pay for wasting his. He finally catches up to the people who took his daughter, but determining her buyer means keeping their leader alive. Stabbing him with spikes and attaching them to jumper cables, Mills fashions a makeshift electroshock treatment. This vengeance doesn’t stop at strangers, though. After discovering his friend’s corruption, he shoots the guy’s wife and threatens to execute her unless he gets some info. Bryan doesn’t distinguish between targets. Like any good parent, he does whatever it takes to save his kid.^[2]

Everyone makes compromises in a zombie dystopia. Joel Miller knows that better than most. In The Last of Us, this blue-collar guy eeks out an existence through dirty deals. Hurting people is on the table most days, as the alternative means being trampled or killed by other desperate survivors. Even by that low standard, though, he reaches a new level of depravity.

After a cannibalistic clan takes his surrogate daughter, Joel captures two members to learn her location. He begins with a brutal beating before moving on to knives. Stabbing his victim in the leg, he threatens to pop out the kneecap. The guy then has to mark the location on a map with the bloody blade. It’s amazing how far Joel goes when he has something to lose.^[3]

7 Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher is an imposing individual on any day. His immense size comes second only to his prowess as a soldier. His militaristic upbringing grants him unparalleled efficacy in melee combat, firearms, and conspiracies. He’s more than a match for any thugs who come his way, making mincemeat of foes in a straight-up fight. However, he’s arguably more intimidating when his enemies can’t fight back.

Reacher is great at causing pain. His extensive expertise on the human body tells him exactly which buttons to push. This knowledge results in torture scenes involving the most unexpected instruments. A particularly twisted example emerges when he pumps air into a catheter, threatening to burst the bladder of a hospitalized villain. You don’t expect such an unorthodox strategy, but that’s what happens when mixing killer know-how with a lack of patience.^[4]

Police officers combat criminals, but they can only go so far. Inspector Harry Callahan, aka “Dirty Harry,” brazenly defies those limits with his own brand of justice. Viewers learn the extent of those measures when a serial killer—nicknamed “Scorpio”—begins plaguing the city. Harry relentlessly pursues the psycho, but botched police procedures result in more bodies piling up. Upon finally catching up to Scorpio, the furious detective shoots him in the leg and steps on the wound. He does this to learn the location of the killer’s next victim. The cruel twist is that said victim is already dead. Worse, the torture means that the information isn’t admissible in court. He lacks the emotional detachment instilled in Jedi at a young age, so he goes the extra mile to save others. That drive normally makes him a hero, but not to those who get in his way.

This approach obviously goes against the Jedi’s code, but it’s usually more effective than their traditional methods, especially in wartime. The leader, Dementus, then kills her mother before bartering the child off. Over the next several years, Furiosa quietly matures into a deadly road warrior. When she clashes with Dementus again, he takes her man and her arm in horrific fashion. Luckily, her cunning finally defeats the wannabe overlord.

After using other wasteland factions to wipe out his gang, Furiosa pursues Dementus through the desert. At first, she sadistically toys with him by slicing his canteen and haunting him from a distance. Eventually, though, she reveals herself before chaining him up and beating him to within an inch of his life. For the final bit of cruel irony, she uses an acorn from her oasis to plant a tree with him at the center, essentially making him into an emaciated human fertilizer while he’s still alive. “Purposeful savagery,” indeed.^[7]

The Norsemen may have been settlers and explorers, but they never lost their roots as warriors. Even the sharp-minded Ragnar Lothbrok falls back on those old instincts. While he spends most of the Vikings series charting a path forward for his people, his violent side comes out when people threaten his family. Such is the case with Jarl Borg. Seeking revenge for a past insult, he seizes Ragnar’s village and tries to kill his wife, children, and brother. His reign doesn’t last long, though.

Ragnar quickly captures Borg and resolves to kill him. It’s not a simple beheading, however. Instead, he subjects his prisoner to the Blood Eagle. In her own way, the vengeful hacker makes the act more scarring for the perpetrator. Not only does Salander commit the same act on him with a metal instrument, but she also blackmails him with footage of the original encounter. She uses this leverage to secure her freedom and financial security. For the final insult, she tattoos a “Rapist Pig” label on his chest. Rather than simply kill her abuser, she squeezes him for all he’s worth. What an oddly pragmatic approach to torture.^[9]

1 Barbie

You’d never expect torture from a family franchise like Toy Story, least of all from a dainty toy like Barbie. That said, Toy Story 3 pushes her to desperate measures. She initially buys into the paradise of Sunnyside Day Care, thanks in part to the romantic salesmanship of one resident, Ken. Unfortunately, the place soon turns into a brutal prison, so the toys must work together in an elaborate escape.

Barbie’s role in this plan is to find out a key piece of info from Ken. After tricking him into modeling clothes for her, she ambushes him and ties him up with a paddleball. She then subjects him to the unspeakable torture…of watching her rip his vintage outfits. It may not harm him physically, but the mere sight is enough to hurt his soul. Maybe that’s the most brutal torture of all.^[10]

10 Burt Reynolds–Boogie Nights

After rising to superstardom in the 1970s and early ’80s, actor Burt Reynolds appeared in a series of box office bombs that tanked his name value. When up-and-coming director Paul Thomas Anderson offered Reynolds a role in his 1997 movie Boogie Nights, he essentially gave Reynolds a chance to prove he was still a star. Boogie Nights went on to be a massive hit, and Reynolds received the first and only Academy Award nomination of his career for his portrayal of the fictional porn director Jack Horner.

Yet Reynolds despised working on Boogie Nights and struggled to find anything nice to say about the film even after it earned him an Oscar nomination. Reynolds later said that he had little respect for Anderson and felt that the director was “full of himself.” Some of Reynold’s co-stars think that the actor was simply too out of touch to appreciate the film and understand why it was so successful.^[1]

In The Help, Viola Davis plays an African-American maid working for a family in the Deep South during the 1960s. Yet Davis describes The Help as one of those movies she regrets being in.

For Davis, the problem wasn’t director Tate Taylor or even her co-stars. Instead, Davis felt that the movie didn’t properly capture the “voices of the maids” and focused too much on the film’s other characters. Some critics at the time echoed Davis’s concerns. Even Abilene Cooper—the real-life maid that Davis’s character was inspired by—sued the producers of the movie over what she felt was an “embarrassing” adaptation of the story. ^[2]

For some, the Disney Channel’s High School Musical movies invoke powerful memories of a time and place in their lives. For others, they invoke somewhat more embarrassing memories of a time and place in their lives. It turns out that High School Musical star Zac Efron belongs to the latter camp.

Efron says that he looks back at himself in the High School Musical films and wants to “kick that guy’s a** sometimes.” Efron goes on to say that those movies may have made him famous but that the kind of fame he received is “not a real thing” and that you can’t “share that with your friends.” This seems to be another case of a breakout role rocketing a young actor to success faster than they anticipated or enjoyed.^[3]

7 Crispin Glover–Back to the Future

Back to the Future is one of those generational hits that helped change the lives of nearly everyone involved with it. While director Robert Zemeckis and stars Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox have embraced the movie’s success, actor Crispin Glover has long been open about his disdain for Back to the Future and its eventual legacy.

Glover always had an issue with the movie’s ending and the ways it suggests the story’s main characters need to be rich to be happy. Glover’s disagreements with Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale over the issue contributed to his decision to not appear in Back to the Future Part II. But if you’ve ever watched that movie and felt that Pitt seems strangely checked out of the whole thing…well, that’s probably because he was.

Pitt has described Interview with the Vampire as a “miserable” filming experience that required him to be abroad in the middle of winter in an old windowless studio for a prolonged period. At one point, he even asked one of the movie’s producers how much it would cost to just leave the production. When Pitt was informed that it would cost him around $40 million to get out of the movie, he decided to gut it out and finish the film.^[5]

5 Gene Hackman–Hoosiers

While Gene Hackman has starred in many memorable movies throughout his legendary career, few are as beloved as 1986’s Hoosiers. Considered to be one of the greatest sports movies ever made, Hoosiers is arguably best known for Hackman’s portrayal of a high school basketball coach named Norman Dale, who helps lead a ragtag group of students to unlikely success.

Interestingly, Hackman has always seen Hoosiers itself as an unlikely success. While filming, Hackman told co-star Dennis Hopper to save his money because “we’ll never work again after this film.” It’s not entirely clear why Hackman resents the movie so much, though those around him at the time recall that he was generally grumpy throughout the shoot and seemed to feel that the movie was a pandering mess that was destined to bomb.^[6]

4 George Clooney–Batman

Following the success of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman movie, the role of Batman became one of the most coveted casting choices in Hollywood. Few were surprised when the producers of 1997’s Batman and Robin revealed that rising star George Clooney had agreed to play the caped crusader in the much-anticipated movie. Unfortunately for Clooney, that film ended up being a box-office disappointment and is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that Clooney doesn’t look back on the role as fondly as other Batman actors.

While filming, Murray had a falling out with director—and longtime friend—Harold Ramis over disagreements regarding the film’s tone and messages. Things got so bad at one point that Murray reportedly only agreed to communicate with the movie’s producers via a sign language interpreter. Some theorize that Murray was simply in a bad place at that time and that this movie is a big painful reminder of those times. These comments usually follow criticisms made either before or after a project’s release. Not only does this response make them look like petty children, but it often hinders the final product. 10 Paul Feig

Fans desperately wanted a third Ghostbusters flick, but not like this. The 2016 reboot ditched the dry humor of the original in favor of loud slapstick and dirty gags. More noticeably, it replaced the male stars with four women. These factors prompted widespread rejection before the film ever came out. While much of the discourse was directed at the film itself, some comments denigrated the female leads based on their sex. The filmmakers took that angle and ran with it.

The people behind the movie soon dismissed any detractors as sexist trolls who couldn’t let go of their nostalgia. Among them was writer/director Paul Feig. He took personal responsibility for the all-female team and saw the negative response as “vile” and “misogynistic.” After the film underperformed, he likened its struggle to Hillary Clinton’s failed presidential campaign of the same year, saying that the hostile rejections came from people riled up by her opponent, Donald Trump. 9 Rian Johnson

The Disney era of Star Wars has copped a lot of criticism, with many fans feeling that this new content disrespects the legacy of creator George Lucas. Anyone who didn’t like the film for that reason got a blunt, profane dismissal from Johnson. However, Star Wars fans don’t shut up that easily.^[2]

8 Zack Snyder

This flashy director’s track record is mixed at best, but his most divisive work came in leading the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. These movies were meant to bring Superman, Batman, and countless other DC heroes to the big screen in a cinematic universe comparable to Marvel. Sadly, fans took issue with how the films portrayed their iconic heroes—cold, distant, and occasionally murderous. Namely, both Batman and Superman killed several people in an inglorious fashion. Fans felt that such actions diminished the heroism, but the director disagreed.

Zack Snyder repeatedly defended his decisions. He argued that fans are naïve and “brainwashed” by inauthentic material. If you want these heroes to maintain their admirable qualities, then you’re living in a “dream world.” His violent vision is more realistic and, therefore, compelling. Basically, you don’t understand his art because he’s smarter than you.^[3]

7 Jessica Gao

It’s not often that filmmakers draw first blood, but that’s exactly what happened with Jessica Gao. Marvel appointed her as the showrunner of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Focusing primarily on the title character being a woman, she anticipated a negative response from longtime fans. Rather than trying to win them over, though, Gao used the show to poke fun at them.

Throughout her adventures, series heroine Jennifer Walters encountered misogynistic males. Many of them were blatant, basement-dwelling nerds who hated where the story was going. These guys functioned as the butt of the joke or the intended object of ire. Gao admitted that they represent the “trolls” that the show would inevitably earn. In essence, she mocked people for hating a product designed to anger them.^[4]

6 Eric Kripke

The Boys began as a cynical satire of superheroes and their effect on pop culture. It’s frequently geared its storylines toward current events in the United States, namely the political controversies arising during Donald Trump’s presidency. The catch is that many viewers believed that the creators approached these events from a purely leftist perspective, leading the writing to suffer.

Showrunner Eric Kripke acknowledged his own bias yet refused to cater to both sides of the aisle. Anyone who doesn’t like his perspective can “go watch something else.” He went on to condemn fans who liked the character of Homelander: a cartoonishly twisted parallel for Trump. Unable to understand their reasoning, he threw up his hands in resignation. Failing to learn only opened him to the same mistakes in subsequent seasons.^[5]

5 Christopher McQuarrie

The Mission Impossible movies have been going on for over two decades. With a franchise that long, it figures that they would eventually yield diminishing returns. The latest—Dead Reckoning Part One—underwhelmed at the box office. Fans felt that the movie overloaded itself with exposition regarding its AI villain. However, the director/writer rejected that claim.

Christopher McQuarrie asserted that lacking said exposition would have left viewers confused. He needed to explain these concepts multiple times because not everyone pays enough attention to grasp them. If you didn’t need that extra explanation, then you’re “the sharpest student in the class.” This statement implied that most audiences are akin to slower students. Additionally, it meant he intentionally dumbed down the movie to cater to those students. Neither conclusion was a respectful assessment.^[6]

4 James Cameron

James Cameron has left a permanent mark on sci-fi and the box office. Ironically, though, people were mixed on his passion project: Avatar. This space epic bombarded audiences with blatant themes about environmentalism and colonialism. This agenda came at the cost of an interesting plot or memorable characters. That crippling flaw made people hesitant about the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, which clocked in at three hours. According to Cameron, though, that wasn’t an issue.

The director dismissed those disillusioned with Avatar. People who believed the first film was forgettable simply needed to watch it again; they would then eat their words with a side of humble pie. Cameron went on to say that complaining about long runtimes is hypocritical in the age of streaming and binge-watching. People who level that critique at Avatar were “whiners.” Basically, none of these complaints had any merit. You just had a bad memory and no stamina.^[7]

3 James Mangold

Taking over the iconic Indiana Jones series came with a lot of pressure. Longtime fans had high expectations, and they weren’t shy about their displeasure. That displeasure came to a head when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny dropped its first trailer. Fans worried that Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character would step over the titular adventurer and steal the spotlight. Legacy sequels like Star Wars: The Force Awakens had already gone that route, leading many viewers to think that the cinematic hero would be replaced. The director had no patience for such speculation.

James Mangold chalked it up to “trolls” getting clicks. He browbeat these trolls for exploiting people’s “feelings about other films and culture war politics.” Apparently, you’re only allowed to theorize positively about films leading up to release. Anything else just contributed to a toxic discourse.^[8]

2 Tim Miller

Another storied series caused another director to lash out at trolls. This time, the topic was Terminator: Dark Fate. Fans were cautiously optimistic about this sequel since series creator James Cameron was involved, but that enthusiasm evaporated after the promotional material came out. Photos and trailers almost exclusively emphasized the female cast. Specific criticism targeted Mackenzie Davis’s character, Grace, a cyborg woman who went toe-to-toe with a Terminator. To many viewers, the movie was the latest blockbuster IP to push a feminist message. Of course, not everyone had a problem with that.

Director Tim Miller seemed to revel in dividing audiences. He bragged that only “enlightened” fans would enjoy Grace. Conversely, her strength would scare any “closet misogynist.” If you weren’t excited about this product, then you were sexist and behind the times. That wasn’t a good argument in general, but it’s especially misplaced with Terminator. Not only did much of its audience come from older entries, but a big reason for that was the formidable female lead: Sarah Connor. Because of that, Miller’s stance instantly collapsed.^[9]

1 Ridley Scott

Few living directors have made movies for as long as Ridley Scott. That longevity means he still harbors older sensibilities. Unfortunately, it also means that his films aren’t the box office giants they once were. A depressing example was The Last Duel. This historical flick fell flat at the box office. According to Scott, that failure lies with millennials.

The director derided the generation as one raised on cell phones and social media. He said that you, as the viewer, “do not ever want to be taught anything unless you’re told it on a cellphone.” Young people simply lacked the attention span to be stimulated by a movie. Sadly, this assertion echoed a stereotypical senior ranting about “these kids today.” Well, those whippersnappers make up a huge number of moviegoers, so try not to drive them away.^[10]

Horror movies are littered with brutal deaths, from slashers stabbing victims to zombies chowing down on the living. A fair number of these kills have reached iconic status, and the stories about the making of these famous scenes are often just as interesting as the onscreen deaths themselves. 10 The Sleeping Bag Kill in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood

There have been many iconic kills in the Friday the 13th franchise, but one of the top fan favorites occurs in Part VII: The New Blood (1988). A woman is camping with her boyfriend near Crystal Lake when Jason Voorhees drags her from the tent while she’s still in her sleeping bag and gives her one hard bash against a tree, killing her instantly.

The sleeping bag kill was initially supposed to involve multiple hits, but the scene had to be cut down for the film to achieve an R rating. Although not as gory as originally intended, Jason managing to kill the woman in just one whack feels brutal. Kane Hodder, who has played Jason many times, says that it’s one of his favorite kills “because you’re killing someone with something that is not a weapon. Anybody can kill with a weapon.”

The kill left such an impact that it even inspired a kill in Jason X (2001). The slasher is plunged into a holographic camp and comes across two girls who offer him alcohol, drugs, and sex. The film then cuts to the two girls in sleeping bags, with Jason using one to hit the other—and this time around, he takes multiple swings.^[1]

9 The Decapitation Scene in Hereditary

The horror in Hereditary (2018) kicks off when 13-year-old Charlie (Milly Shapiro) goes into anaphylactic shock. While driving her to the hospital, her older brother Peter (Alex Wolff) swerves to avoid roadkill, but at that moment, Charlie has her head out of the window to get some air, and she’s decapitated by a telephone pole.

Although the scene is a punch in the gut, Shapiro had a great time while filming it. She was safely tethered to the car and said that “randomly they would swerve and not tell me so I would be startled.” She described the experience as “kind of like a rollercoaster.” Shapiro was even thrilled about seeing the model of her decapitated head and wanted to take it home “to display it and scare people with it.”^[2]

8/span> The Plastic Bag Kill in Black Christmas

Clare (Lynne Griffin) is the first sorority girl to be picked off by Billy, the largely unseen slasher in Black Christmas (1974). After suffocating her with a plastic bag, he puts her body on a rocking chair in the attic. Not only is her corpse creepily shown multiple times throughout the film, but her plastic-wrapped head also appears on the film’s poster.

Although Griffin doesn’t have much screen time as Clare while alive, she had to film numerous shots while dead. Many actors would struggle to play dead with a plastic bag over their head, but it didn’t faze Griffin because, in her own words, she’s “a fairly good swimmer so I could hold my breath for a long time. And I could also keep my eyes open for a long time without blinking.” She said the only real issue was that “when I was breathing, it was making the bag fog up, so they decided to stick it to my face and poke holes up my nose.”^[3]

7 The Dive Out of the Window in The Exorcist

The Exorcist (1973) ends with Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) sacrificing himself by inviting the demon into his body and then jumping out of the window onto the many steps below the MacNeil’s house. In the film, the house is right next to the top of the steps, but it is further back in real life, so an extension had to be built.

Before stuntman Chuck Waters made the iconic leap, a layer of rubber was put on all of the stone steps to make it slightly less painful. Then it was time for Waters to jump—twice—a feat that was watched from the surrounding buildings by people willing to pay $5 to the Georgetown residents looking to profit from the filming. When Miller asked Waters how he pulled off such a dangerous stunt, he replied, “Complete and total non-resistance, my body becomes totally relaxed.”^[4]

6 The Ending of Night of the Living Dead

When penning Night of the Living Dead (1968), writers George A. Romero and John Russo figured the main character, Ben, would be played by a white actor. That changed when Duane Jones auditioned for the role, but Romero and Russo purposefully didn’t rewrite the script to reference his race. Despite that, Jones being Black changed how the ending of the film—which sees Ben killed by the men who are getting rid of the zombies—was perceived.

“The fact that these redneck posse guys shot him, that became racial, instead of just a mistaken identity, which is really what we intended,” Romero said. He had to fight to keep the dark ending, with Columbia Pictures wanting Ben to survive. Romero said, “None of us wanted to do that. We couldn’t imagine a happy ending.” Jones was in agreement, telling Romero that “the black community would rather see me dead than saved, after all that had gone on, in a corny and symbolically confusing way.”^[5]

5 The Opening Scene in Scream

Scream (1996) opens with Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) getting a phone call from a killer while she’s home alone. After terrorizing her with questions about horror movies and killing her boyfriend, Ghostface stabs Casey and strings her up from a tree. This scene was inspired by a real—although less bloody—event in screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s life.

“I was house-sitting for a friend of mine, and I walk into the family room, and I see that the window’s open,” Williamson explains. “So I go and I get a butcher knife and I start walking around the house and I call up my friend on the phone and I’m like, ‘okay, I think someone’s in the house.’” Williamson’s friend started doing the “ch ch ch, ah ah ah” sound effect from Friday the 13th, which led to the pair discussing horror movies. But unlike in the movie, thankfully, a killer wasn’t waiting to pounce.

Scream was originally supposed to star Barrymore as the main character, Sidney Prescott, but she requested the role of Casey because “my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was going to be slugging through at the end, but was going to creak by and make it.” To defy expectations, she took the role of Casey—making the audience initially think that she was the main character—”so we would establish this rule does not apply.”^[6]

4 The Highway Pile-Up in Final Destination 2

Final Destination 2 (2003) starts with a pile-up on a highway caused by the chains on a logging truck snapping, sending tree trunks crashing into the vehicles on the road behind it. As much of the crash as possible was done by a stunt team, with the whole scene taking 11 days to film. But one thing that wasn’t possible to do practically was the logs—and not because it would have been too dangerous!

Jason Crosby, who worked on the film’s CGI, says that the crew “discovered that real logs only bounced about an inch off the road when dropped from a logging truck.” So, to get the right amount of height from the bounce, the logs had to be added with CGI. Thankfully, that means that the chances of a log barreling straight through your windshield are incredibly low.^[7]

3 The First Kill in Jaws

Jaws (1975) starts with Chrissie (Susan Backlinie) being attacked by an unseen shark while swimming in the sea at night. To simulate the attack, stuntwoman-turned-actress Backlinie was tied to ropes, and then, as director Steven Spielberg explains, she was “tugged left and right by ten men on one rope and ten men on the other back to shore.” For the final pull underwater, Spielberg himself tugged on the rope because “he wanted it just a certain way.”

Backlinie had to go through another ordeal to complete the scene, though. Spielberg wanted her screams to sound like she was really drowning so, according to Richard Dreyfuss, who played oceanographer Matt Hooper. “He had her tilt her head back, and he poured water down her throat while she screamed, which is now known as waterboarding, so Steven is actually guilty of a war crime.”^[8]

2 The Shower Scene in Psycho

The scene in Psycho (1960) where Marion (Janet Leigh) is murdered in the shower is an absolute classic. When director Alfred Hitchcock was asked why he wanted to adapt Robert Bloch’s 1959 novel, he said, “I think the murder in the bathtub, coming out of the blue, that was about all.” The murder is actually more brutal in the novel, with Mary (as she’s called in the book) being decapitated.

The short scene took a week to film, which was an enormous one-third of the shooting schedule. Hitchcock wanted perfection and made Leigh film the shot of the camera zooming out from her eye 26 times. However, while editing, they noticed that Leigh took a breath in the only shot deemed usable, which is why there’s a brief cut to the showerhead.

Food also played a crucial part in the scene. A knife slicing through casaba melon and steak was used for the sound of the knife cutting Marion. Thanks to being filmed in black and white, the fake blood didn’t have to be red, so Hershey’s chocolate syrup was used. The shot where it looks like we see the knife pierce Marion was done by putting chocolate syrup on the tip of the knife, placing it against her stomach, and pulling away, with the shot then being reversed.^[9]

1 The Chestburster Scene in Alien

Director Ridley Scott knew that the element of surprise would be crucial for getting the actor’s best reactions to the chestburster in Alien (1979). “If an actor is just acting terrified, you can’t get the genuine look of raw, animal fear,” he said.

The cast knew that an alien creature would burst out of Kane’s (John Hurt) chest, but they didn’t know how it was going to look. Everyone but Hurt left the room, and he got into position under the table with his head sticking through a hole. His prosthetic chest was filled with cuts of meat, along with the alien on a hydraulic ram.

After a false start, Scott got the alien to punch through and the blood to spray just the way he wanted it. The actors were suitably shocked, with screenwriter Ronald Shusett recalling that “Veronica Cartwright—when the blood hit her, she passed out. I heard from Yaphet Kotto’s wife that after that scene, he went to his room and wouldn’t talk to anybody.”^[10]

Long before M3GAN did her creepy little dance, Chucky unleashed a never-before-experienced fear of dolls. (Okay, M3GAN is not exactly a doll, but you get the idea.) Nearly twenty years before Netflix introduced the Scream TV series, the original Ghostface made us double-check that our doors were locked at night.

There is a reason why old-school horror movie villains are still so popular. The actors behind these monsters tapped into our most primal fears by fully embodying the role, scaring us half to death in the process. Think about how Scream turned an everyday cinema into a house of horrors or how Halloween made innocuous pumpkins seem the most sinister thing ever.

Freddy Krueger crawled into our nightmares, while Jason Voorhees traumatized us like no other movie character could. Except for Michael Myers, that is. Not to mention Leatherface and his ever-present chainsaw. But what are the stories behind these villains? What inspired the most terrifying, bloodthirsty fictional killers that, in turn, served as the spark behind today’s up-and-coming horror villains?

10 Samara Morgan

How long did it take you to stop looking at your TV askance after watching 2002’s The Ring? “First you watch it, then you die!” That sentence alone sent chills down the spines of thousands of eager horror movie fans. The Ring is one of the horror movie genre’s best classics and is based on a horror novel of the same name. The American version of the movie is a remake of the 1998 Japanese film Ringu and claims to be based on true events. These events are said to have happened during the 16th century in Japan.

A girl named Okiku worked in the Himeij Castle in Japan and was pursued by a samurai, but kept refusing him. To manipulate the situation in his favor, the samurai hid a valuable plate that Okiku was meant to protect. When Okiku realized the plate was gone, she panicked because it meant she would be put to death.

The samurai again suggested that she should give in to his advances because he could save her. She refused, angering the samurai, so he suspended her over a deep well. When she said no again after the samurai asked her one last time to be with him, he struck Okiku with his sword, and she tumbled down the well to her death.

It wasn’t the end of Okiku, however. The samurai heard her counting the plates over and over again from the bottom of the well, never reaching number 10. The creepy thing is that there is a well called Okiku’s Well in Japan. The well has a cover over it to keep Okiku from crawling out.^[1]

9 Norman Bates

When Robert Bloch dreamed up the character of Norman Bates for his 1959 horror novel Psycho, he probably never imagined that his book would become so popular that its contents would be turned into several movies. Norman Bates also made a turn on TV in the series Bates Motel.

In Bloch’s subsequent novels, Bates is not the main villain. He is succeeded by more than one copycat killer who assumes Bates’s identity after his death. This is in contrast to the Universal Studios movie franchise. Psycho was adapted to film because of the shocking revelations surrounding murderer Ed Gein at the time. This led to a widespread assumption that Gein inspired the Norman Bates character.

However, Bloch revealed that it was not Gein so much as the horrific circumstances surrounding the killer’s case that inspired Normal Bates. He wanted to highlight that killers could hide their true nature even in small towns amid the most curious window-peeping neighbors.

It was only many years later, when the world was appalled at learning the full extent of Gein’s crimes, that Bloch realized how closely Bates resembled Gein in their heinous acts. And, of course, there are also the weird attachments both men had to their mothers.^[2]

8 Candyman

Horrifying legends that come to life are what make many old-school horrors so good. In the movie Candyman (1992), an unforgettable legend was “born” after a Black artist was summarily lynched when it was discovered he had an affair with a white woman. A student writes a thesis about urban legends and folklore in Chicago and happens upon the legend of the Candyman.

The legend turns into a nightmare when the Candyman’s name is said five times in front of a mirror, and he starts killing people with a rusty hook for a hand. Not to mention the ribcage and mouth full of bees. Tony Todd played the titular character so well that it is hard to picture him without the hook and the bees. And the movie took some of its inspiration from a blood-chilling real-life murder.

On April 22, 1987, Ruthie Mae McCoy called 911 in a panic. Ruthie suffered from mental illness and told the dispatcher, “They throwed the cabinet down.” This confused the dispatcher, but Ruthie was right. There were passages between the apartments in the building where Ruthie lived. These passages were meant to make maintenance work easier. But, it also made it a breeze for burglars to push bathroom cabinets out of the wall to enter an apartment.

A neighbor alerted the police after they heard gunshots coming from Ruthie’s apartment that night. However, the police did not break down the door when no one responded to their knocks and calls. They did not want to be sued for destruction of property. It took two days for Ruthie’s body to be discovered as a result. A building superintendent drilled the lock to her apartment open and found her face-down on the floor. She had been shot four times.

In the Candyman movie, the first victim is Ruthie Jean, who is murdered by someone who came through her bathroom mirror. Ruthie Jean’s neighbor is Ann Marie McCoy, who believed Ruthie was crazy. Ruthie died alone after calling the police for help. It is not quite clear how Ruthie McCoy’s murder became part of the movie. It is thought that the director may have heard about the crime after deciding to shoot Candyman in Chicago.

The movie was also based on a short story, “The Forbidden,” written by Clive Barker.^[3]

7 Leatherface

The earliest versions of Leatherface were a bit comical (at least they are now). The face-wearing killer holding the chainsaw over his head and running down the stairs is not nearly as scary as it was back in the day. (The new movies are still terrifying, though.)

Not surprisingly, some elements of the Leatherface character were inspired by Ed Gein. Director Tobe Hooper had heard stories about the Wisconsin murderer but claimed he did not know it was Gein until the 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released.

Gein’s fondness for wearing human skin as a mask greatly disturbed Hooper, so he decided to make it part of Leatherface’s character. Additional inspiration came from Hooper’s memory of a Halloween party where a friend arrived wearing a cadaver’s face. Hooper would later state that it was the most disturbing thing he had ever witnessed.

Hooper also used Baby Huey as inspiration for Leatherface’s bumbling walk and child-like behavior. As for the chainsaw, this came from a fleeting thought Hooper had about mowing down a large crowd in the hardware section of an exceptionally busy store.^[4]

6 Jason Voorhees

Jason Voorhees is that guy in a hockey mask who can knock someone’s head clean off their body with one punch. This is both hilarious and strangely terrifying. Friday the 13th is a true horror classic and a Halloween movie marathon favorite. The franchise has twelve films and an upcoming limited series called Crystal Lake, a prequel to the first movie released in 1980.

It is widely believed that a horrifying incident in Finland was the main inspiration behind the Friday the 13th movies. Although the production team denied that the movies or Voorhees are based on specific real-life events, the similarities between fiction and reality are too striking. You be the judge…

In 1960, four teenagers set off on a camping trip in Lake Bodom. The two boys and two girls set up their tents along the lake’s edge. A group of birdwatchers saw the tents collapse on June 5 and a blond man running in the opposite direction. They did not investigate, so it was only later that a carpenter discovered what had become a crime scene. Three of the teenagers had been stabbed to death, and the fourth was barely alive. Nils Gustafsson had suffered several stab wounds and fractures to his face.

He told the police that someone broke into the tents and attacked them. He also said that the man who attacked was dressed in all black and had bright red eyes. Gustafsson was initially considered a suspect but was cleared because the severity of his injuries matched the story he told the police. The Lake Bodom murders remain unsolved in 2024.

The Friday the 13th movies went on to potentially inspire serial killer Peter Moore to kill four male victims over three months back in 1995. Moore blamed the murders on a fictitious restaurant worker named Jason, who his lawyer and the prosecution had no doubt was supposed to be based on Jason Voorhees. Moore was a cinema owner in North Wales before he turned serial killer.^[5]

5 Hannibal Lecter

Hannibal Lecter is an even more terrifying horror movie character than Voorhees. The 1981 novel Red Dragon was adapted for the big screen and resulted in the widely praised The Silence of the Lambs, released in 1991.

Anthony Hopkins’s performance made the film, and his sociopathic demeanor throughout still manages to spook, even if you watch the movie for the tenth time. Many of Lecter’s characteristics are the result of the novel writer and movie director’s wild imagination. Just the name Hannibal (a play on cannibal) immediately evokes an image no one wants to picture. But, some of the inspiration for this diabolical character came from a horrifying real-life case.

Thomas Harris, the author of Red Dragon, worked as a journalist in the 1960s. He interviewed a convicted and imprisoned killer, Dykes Askew Simmons, in Mexico. It was at this prison that he met “Dr. Salazar.” At first, Harris thought Salazar was a prison doctor. Salazar asked Harris incredibly insightful questions, and Harris was struck by how poised the man was. However, when Harris later asked a prison warden about Salazar, he learned the horrible truth.

Salazar was actually an incarcerated former surgeon named Alfredo Balli Trevino!

Trevino came out as gay during a time when Mexico actively oppressed the gay community. He tried his best to fit into mainstream society, but this upset his lover to a great extent. Trevino ended up killing his lover over what was believed to be Trevino’s intention to marry a woman. Trevino sliced up the corpse into small pieces and stacked them into a box. Obviously, he did not get away with the crime. But, his sentence was commuted after he had served 20 years in prison, and he returned to his hometown of Monterrey.

Trevino went on to treat patients without worrying too much about payment until he died in 2008. It is believed that Trevino had also murdered several hitchhikers between 1950 and 1970, but this was never proven. Harris used Trevino’s mannerisms as inspiration for his Hannibal Lecter character. Both men were doctors at one point. Both had a deep insight into the criminal mind. Both were intellectually challenging to others. And both men easily conned others.

Trevino was also not Harris’s only inspiration. Other murderous individuals who helped bring Lecter to life include Albert Fish, Pietro Pacciani, and Robert John Maudsley.

Pacciani, who was known as the Monster of Florence, murdered several people in Florence in the 1970s. These murders directly inspired The Silence of the Lambs sequel Hannibal. Maudsley killed child molesters and continued his murder spree while in prison. He was finally confined to a bulletproof glass cell, which inspired Lecter’s cell in the film.^[6]

4 Pennywise

Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel IT sets quite the opening scene. You can picture six-year-old Georgie Denbrough in his yellow slicker and red galoshes running down Witcham Street, chasing the paper boat his older brother Bill made for him. In this tense opening scene, readers are introduced to what would become one of horror’s most terrifying villains: Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

King thought out most of Pennywise’s characteristics (no surprise there). But the evil clown character was also inspired by a bunch of real-life clowns. Many believe King’s idea for IT came from serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who used to dress up as a clown called Pogo. However, King named Bozo, Clarabelle (from Howdy Doody), and Ronald McDonald as his inspirations for writing his controversial novel. King had a run-in with the Ronald McDonald mascot on a plane back when travelers were still allowed to smoke onboard.

King asked the mascot where he came from, to which the clown replied, “From McDonald Land.” King naturally thought the clown was being sarcastic and asked him where he really came from. The clown then confirmed that there was such a place as McDonald Land in Chicago, and he was there for the opening of a new McDonalds restaurant.

King found this to be a surreal and unnerving moment, but it also gave him more ideas for the Pennywise character.^[7]

3 Ghostface

When Scream was released in 1996, it introduced a whole new meta approach to horror. The movie clearly made fun of horror movie tropes while still paying tribute to the classics that came before it. Kevin Williamson, of Dawson’s Creek fame, wrote the Scream screenplay after watching a TV special about Florida serial killer Danny Rolling. Rolling, or the Gainesville Ripper, murdered five students in four days in August 1990.

Gainesville was in a state of terror and remained so even after Rolling was caught. While Williamson watched the events unfold via reenactment on his TV screen, he noticed an open window in his house. He was immediately terrified as he realized how easy it would be for a killer to get into his house. This overwhelming fear inspired him to create Ghostface.

The similarities between the killer in Scream and Rolling are highlighted in the movie. In real life, Rolling insisted he never had a motive for killing the students. But there had to be some reason for his murder spree. In Scream, Billy Loomis is revealed as the killer behind the ghastly mask, and he tells Sidney that not every killer needs a motive. However, Loomis did have a motive in that Sidney’s mother had an affair with his father, resulting in his mother leaving.

Scream seemingly also inspired a so-called “thrill killing” in 2006. Sixteen-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart was murdered by two classmates, Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper. The boys stalked Stoddart and filmed her before stabbing her to death. They made a video in which they talked about how they would kill Cassie. The same video contained footage of the boys’ reaction after they killed her.

Draper and Adamcik apparently wanted to become notorious serial killers. They even had a death list of other people they wanted to murder. When they were caught, they mentioned Scream, as well as the Columbine High School shooters, as their inspiration for Cassie’s murder.^[8]

2 Michael Myers

Michael Myers is often described as pure evil. Considering that he was six years old when he killed his first victim (his sister), that description is apt. Throughout the film franchise, Myers continues to murder people left and right. And he does this without so much as a grunt.

Myers is the embodiment of a nightmare that you cannot escape. If he finds and stalks you at a gas station, chances are he’ll rip your teeth out. Or, if you get out of your car to confront him next to the road, he’ll probably stomp your head to a pulp. Sure, these are all movie scenes and not real life, but the Halloween movies still have the power to make you check behind you when you walk to the bathroom at night.

The Myers character was inspired by a very real and frightening event experienced by Halloween director John Carpenter when he was a student at Western Kentucky University.

Carpenter met a teenage patient during a visit to a psychiatric hospital. The boy’s unnerving “evil” stare greatly unsettled Carpenter, and he later used this experience to describe Michael Myers’s emotionless face when he was six. The character of Sam Loomis describes Myers’s eyes as the “devil’s eyes.” Yul Brynner of Westworld fame inspired grown-up Myers’s inhuman strength throughout the Halloween movies. And, of course, Myers’s infamous mask was modeled from a mask of Star Trek’s Captain Kirk.^[9]

1 Freddy Krueger

When you watch A Nightmare on Elm Street now, it is more of a comedy than a horror. Freddy Krueger’s exaggerated mannerisms and strangely long arms are not exactly scary in 2024. But, back in 1984, when Krueger’s scarred face popped up on the big screen, he scared the crap out of moviegoers.

Like the other movies on this list, A Nightmare on Elm Street was inspired by real-life events and experiences. Writer and director Wes Craven read about a family who had escaped the Killing Fields in Cambodia. The family made it to America, but before they could even sigh in proper relief, a young member of the family started having nightmares.

The young boy told his parents he was afraid to sleep because he believed the thing chasing him in his nightmares would get him. He tried to stay awake for several days at a time but inevitably fell asleep. That night, his parents heard screams emanating from their son’s bedroom. They rushed to him, but it was too late. Their son had died in the middle of his last nightmare.

This story formed the basis of Craven’s script, but he still needed to figure out his villain. Craven had several ideas for the villain, but one childhood memory ultimately brought Freddy to life. Craven remembered a man walking down the street past his house late one night. The man turned and looked at Craven, who was watching him with a disturbing expression on his face. The man also wore a fedora—another part of Craven’s childhood experiences that made it into the movie.^[10]

Casting is among the most scrutinized aspects of adapting books. Authors often provide vivid descriptions of their characters. Weight, height, age, and nationality are all important to paint that picture. As a result, fans have a firm idea of how their favorite figures ought to look. Not everyone has the same idea, though.

In certain adaptations, the characters don’t resemble their book counterparts in the least. Taking such liberties may seem like deliberate disrespect from the filmmakers, but it’s not the end of the world. These changes can sometimes lead to great things. The alternative actors may be compelling in their own right, bringing out the characters’ best qualities and letting viewers connect with them on a new level. They might even be superior to the original text. Because of that, we should strive to keep an open mind, even with our favorite stories. A pleasant surprise could come any time.

10 Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone

Despite his young age, Jesse Stone is among the more damaged Robert B. Parker protagonists. The 35-year-old detective is physically imposing, but his drinking problem costs him his marriage and his job at the LAPD. Now serving as the police chief of a small New England town, he seeks recovery and redemption. That groundwork leads to an exceptional portrayal.

Tom Selleck brilliantly plays the downbeat detective in several TV movies. His huge height helps to intimidate, and his charisma lets him subtly showcase the character’s tragic layers. The regret is all over his face, but you also sense an iron resolve to do right by himself and the townspeople. This poignant performance always draws you in. The only caveat is that Selleck is about 20 years too old. That difference may seem like a huge distraction, but it’s easily overlooked, given the compelling drama onscreen.^[1]

9 Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit revolves around a group of Dwarves and their daring quest, and Thorin certainly looks like a leader with a daring scheme. Though still Dwarf height, he’s tall for his race and has a regal air thanks to his royal lineage. At the same time, he’s clearly past his prime, sporting an aged face and a long, white beard. Oddly enough, his big-screen version is the opposite.

In Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, Richard Armitage plays the wayward king. While still older than most of his companions, his flowing locks are black with only a few streaks of gray. In addition, his beard is only a few inches long. Luckily, he compensates through sheer gravitas. His deep delivery conveys disarming pathos with every line, and his slow body language betrays years of heavy hardships. Above all, he has the intense eyes of someone with lifelong ambition. You truly believe that he needs to embark on this journey, which is precisely what Thorin calls for.^[2]

8 Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg

A prominent part of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher tales, Yennefer is simultaneously imposing and appealing. The eternal love of the titular monster slayer, this sorceress is the epitome of classically commanding beauty. Her features are nearly perfect, possessing the purity of youth and the structure of maturity. Topping things off are her black hair, pale skin, and piercingly purple eyes. These traits combine into an impossibly alluring image.

At first glance, the 2019 TV series deliberately deviates from that image. Anya Chalotra’s British-Indian heritage means she lacks Yennefer’s pale complexion and violet pupils, and she seems a little too young to convey the character’s decades of experience. To everyone’s surprise, though, she completely owns the role.

Going into the backstory lets her show the sorceress’s deep-seated emotional turmoil, and she continues hinting at that rawness even as the character matures. At the same time, she carries herself with all the grace, power, and cynicism that you’d expect from Yennefer, and she does so without driving viewers away. Blending those contrasting qualities is the greatest challenge with this heroine, and Chalotra accomplishes it beautifully.^[3]

7 Rufus Sewell as Tom Builder

Tom Builder’s background determines both his name and appearance. A principal figure in Ken Follet’s The Pillars of the Earth, he’s a lifelong mason. That career has given him an immense stature and a strong build. Despite his nonviolent profession, he’s the most physically imposing person wherever he goes. In casting this hero, the filmmakers focus on other aspects.

Rufus Sewell steps into Tom’s shoes for The Pillars of the Earth miniseries. He looks about average size and doesn’t tower over anyone. On one hand, this lessens his credibility as a career stoneworker. On the other hand, you can still see that experience in his demeanor. He ably channels the quiet intelligence needed for this precise line of work, and his striking eyes imbue his lines with the renewed passion Tom feels upon starting the story’s revolutionary building. Most importantly, he holds the paternal warmth that you’d want in this blue-collar family man. Sewell makes you believe he’s this man through subtle nuance. For such deep-set aspects, that approach is appropriate.^[4]

6 Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe

A British soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe is the image of rough riding. He’s spent his life as a rogue and has the unscrupulous appearance to match. His angular bone structure, facial scar, and black hair add up to an unfriendly image. That image suits the chip on his shoulder, but it also makes his casting more surprising.

For the series of TV movies, Sean Bean steps up as Sharpe. He doesn’t look nearly as mean as the novels describe; his hair color isn’t even the same. On the upside, he’s always convincing as a man of action, and he flawlessly portrays the character’s inborn anger and resentment of authority. In fact, he’s so appealing as this flawed hero that Cornwell admits to hearing Bean’s voice when writing the character. You couldn’t ask for a better seal of approval.^[5]

5 Katee Sackhoff as Vic Moretti

Victoria “Vic” Moretti may be another damaged cop, but she’s also an invaluable member of the team in Craig Johnson’s Longmire novels. Previously based in Philadelphia, she was ostracized after becoming a whistleblower. She now seeks a fresh start in Wyoming, where she sticks out like a sore thumb. Caucasians and Native Americans make up the region’s population; Vic comes from an Italian family. That’s clear from her name, but it apparently wasn’t clear to the casting director.

Katee Sackhoff—with her white skin and blonde hair—is the furthest thing from an Italian. Nevertheless, she effortlessly embodies the exiled cop. She has a weathered quality about her, which suits the heroine’s tragic background. This persona makes her a hard figure, but she’s never cold. You can still empathize with her plight, and you don’t deny she cares deeply for her allies. Those characteristics are difficult to blend, but Sackhoff’s success with similar roles lets her do the same here.^[6]

4 Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein

This mad scientist is infamous in fiction, but his true appearance may surprise you. The ambitious protagonist of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein hails from a Swiss family and spends his years studying alchemy. He wants to discover the elusive elixir of life—a goal that constantly fuels his experiments. He eventually animates a makeshift human, but that reckless action actually stems from the impetuousness of youth. Frankenstein achieves this milestone soon after his college years. When adapting this iconic tale, though, most filmmakers portray the young academic as an older soul.

One example comes in the form of Peter Cushing. He holds the role throughout Hammer Film’s Frankenstein franchise. Not only does he sport his native British accent, but his angular appearance and calculating demeanor are a far cry from the energetic youth found in Shelley’s novel. However, he compensates with chilling precision.

His immense intellect shows in his articulate delivery and penetrating gaze. You buy him as an academic who knows his subject’s significance. That factor makes him both scarier as a villain and heartbreaking as a tragic figure. Cushing consequently emerges as the best Frankenstein ever put to screen. Considering how many interpretations we’ve seen, that’s saying a lot.^[7]

3 Ben Barnes as Caspian

Caspian X is a pivotal prince in The Chronicles of Narnia. Though technically a member of the invading Telmarines, he sides with the locals and liberates the land from the would-be conquerors. Given his accomplishments, it’s easy to forget that he’s just a preteen boy. With blonde hair and a small frame, he’s the picture of prepubescent naivete. However, he and the rest of the Telmarines (originally European pirates) see a notable change in translation.

In 2008’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, these guys are given a much darker complexion akin to conquistadors, many of them played by Latino actors. Thus, Ben Barnes doesn’t resemble the book’s Caspian at all, with differences ranging from his black hair to his older age. That said, he’s arguably more interesting. He still has a youthful drive, but he also imbues the lost prince with uncertainty and emotional volatility. His Caspian is a troubled soul who’s trying to find his place and right the wrongs done to him. A person in his position would naturally have that same attitude, lending an unexpected authenticity to this fantastical figure.^[8]

2 Christopher Lee as Francisco Scaramanga

This Spanish hitman is one of James Bond’s deadliest adversaries. Though employed by many seedy factions in Ian Fleming’s novels, Scaramanga takes center stage in The Man with the Golden Gun. His expert marksmanship lets him live lavishly despite his young age. He’s only in his thirties, and his red hair is in a crew-cut style. Aside from his tall height, he’s not what you’d imagine from a seasoned assassin.

By contrast, Christopher Lee fits snugly into that image. He obviously has the monumental height, but he also sports black hair with gray streaks—slicked back with nary a strand out of place. These facets distinguish him from his book counterpart, but he nails the villain in all other areas. His sinister presence is perfect for a killer with no conscience. In addition, he has the classy charisma of a disciplined hitman.

This is the type of guy who shoots you between the eyes and casually cashes the check. Beneath the surface, though, is a genuine love for killing; it’s an art form for him. That cold passion is almost too intimidating. When Roger Moore’s Bond comes out on top, you don’t buy it for a second. Lee does his job and then some.^[9]

1 Ray Winstone as Beowulf

Since his pivotal poem, Beowulf has stood tall as the prototypical hero. This Swedish warrior combats all manner of monsters through sheer strength, guile, and force of will. He’s a bear of a man—taller than everyone else with the muscle to match. He’s exactly what you’d imagine when picturing a conquering champion.

Among many other things, the 2007 film takes a few liberties with its casting. Ray Winstone assumes the mantle of Beowulf. He’s not exactly brimming with muscle, and his delivery barely hides his Cockney accent. That said, it also carries an electric conviction. He exudes authority and power, giving him firm command of every scene. Plus, the performance capture format lets him look like the strong warrior that the poem describes, and he confidently carries himself to match that body type. Capturing a larger-than-life hero is no small feat, but Winstone is more than capable of that daunting task.^[10]

Special effects are constantly evolving. They’re just one of the many challenges that filmmakers must overcome in crafting their visions. When it comes to monsters, they’ve employed a number of tricks. Suits, puppets, and miniatures were just a few of the practical techniques used to bring these fantastic creatures to life. While these methods aren’t perfect, they actually have something in front of the camera, thereby making these fictional figures feel more real. However, advancing technology heralded a radical change.

More and more filmmakers opt for computer-generated imagery, rendering the monsters in a digital landscape. This innovation obviously yields new possibilities. Creators can now craft anything imaginable and place it in existing footage. It’s a chance for old icons to gain the fluidity that they never had before. The catch is that such retrofitting doesn’t always work out. Some digital updates actually look worse due to inferior textures, unnatural movements, or lazy presentation. Like the practical effects of old, these CG creatures require immense passion and attention to detail. Otherwise, audiences will reject the fakery and go back to the immersive originals.

10 King Kong

How ironic that a giant like King Kong is really a tiny action figure. Standing dozens of feet tall, this big ape dwarfs all other primates. He uses that size and strength to reign over Skull Island, regularly combatting the prehistoric creatures roaming the remote locale. In the 1933 classic, these explosive brawls came down to stop motion: photographing small models frame-by-frame and stitching them together into a fight sequence. Later takes in the ’60s and ’70s opted for animatronics and placing actors in gorilla suits. It wasn’t until the new millennium that things changed.

The 2000s revived Kong for several projects. The most notable was a 2005 remake of the 1933 film, but subsequent appearances were blockbuster crossovers with other monsters. What these takes had in common was the wealth of CGI. Namely, Kong was a product of motion capture—recording an actor’s movements and transferring them to a digital character. Although he lost some of his prior tangibility, the king was now capable of incredible nuance. That increased expression lets you empathize with him like never before, which was ultimately the point of the character.^[1]

9 Godzilla

The king of the monsters has had a similarly storied history. Godzilla is a colossal saurian awakened by nuclear radiation. Big enough to trample cities and impervious to most weapons, he’s an unstoppable force of destruction. His grand finale is his atomic breath, which reduces targets to fiery, irradiated rubble. Such wanton ruin required a new strategy to shoot.

The filmmakers had neither the time nor the budget for stop motion, so they placed an actor in a rubber suit amid a miniature city. This innovation pioneered kaiju flicks, defining the franchise for decades. It wasn’t until recently that things changed.

With the 2000 Godzilla movie, they began rendering the radioactive reptile on the computer. Though they initially limited this swap to a few shots, the creators eventually forewent the rubber suits entirely. That’s not to say the creators forgot their roots. Godzilla’s proportions and movements still echoed those of an upright human. Films like Shin Godzilla even used motion capture to emulate the lumbering visuals of old. Combined with the detailed textures, these techniques allowed the movies to up the spectacle while matching the slow menace of yesteryear.^[2]

8 Xenomorphs

In space, no one can see the seams in the suit. The xenomorph is an extraterrestrial life form said to be a perfect species. It lays eggs in its victims, which then burst out of the prey’s chest, grow at an exponential rate, and slaughter everything in sight. Not only is the xenomorph incredibly cunning in its predatory tactics, but its acidic blood means you can’t kill it without sustaining wounds yourself. The first two Alien movies brought these parasites to life through puppets and suits, hiding any shortcomings through shadows or close-ups. They couldn’t remain shrouded forever, though.

Later Alien movies had entire armies of xenomorphs. As the series progressed, the practical effects faded away and were replaced by CGI. The quality ebbed and flowed, with the well-lit environments and flashy set pieces often destroying the illusion. This decision prevented the xenomorphs from ever regaining the tangible terror of their early incarnations.^[3]

7 The Thing

Sometimes, our neighbors are the greatest monsters. The Thing is a movie about an alien lying dormant in the Arctic. Once awakened, it possesses and absorbs any organism within reach. It can morph its host to grotesque degrees as a defense mechanism, but it prefers to stay hidden as a doppelganger. This tactic meant that most of the 1982 movie consisted of normal-looking actors. On rare occasions where the creature revealed itself, it did so through horrifying animatronics. Before you could spot any seams, it retreated into the night. Apparently, that restraint was relatively recent.

The 2011 prequel repeated the same beats as its predecessor. The difference was that the titular Thing was far more visible. Not only was it in brighter locations, but it repeatedly burst forth in all its tentacled glory. It was now a digital demon, and it looked atrocious. You didn’t believe it could even touch the characters, let alone kill them.^[4]

6 Dracula

One of the oldest movie monsters required few effects. Dracula is the quintessential vampire. His enigmatic allure draws in unsuspecting victims, enabling him to drink their blood and retain his youth. If seduction doesn’t work, his superhuman strength and dominion over animals are enough to thwart most enemies. Most 20th-century interpretations used simple tricks to portray these gifts, ranging from fake fangs to bats on strings. Of course, these scare tactics weren’t big enough.

Modern filmmakers wanted to show the full extent of Dracula’s vampiric gifts. That’s why relatively recent takes like Dracula Untold had him morph into bat swarms and single-handedly slaughter whole armies. Most of these set pieces look formidable, with the chaotic visuals making it difficult to discern the CGI. Unfortunately, such bombastic effects diminished the subtle scares that defined the character.^[5]

5 The Mummy

Despite its gruesome roots, the mummy should be one of the easier horror icons to adapt. An Egyptian priest comes back to life thanks to an ancient curse. His decayed remains are still wrapped in ritualistic bandages, but he can withstand virtually any attack as he slowly walks toward his targets. That inevitability was enough for early entries as the actors lumbered around in bandaged bodysuits. They were essentially Egyptian zombies. That said, future films wanted to expand that image.

The Mummy remakes in 1999 and 2017 both bestowed catastrophic gifts to their undead antagonists. The bandages were gone in lieu of grisly flesh stretching to unpleasant lengths. In addition, the villains could control swarms of scarabs, conjure massive walls of sand, and bring forth disastrous plagues. All of it amounted to CGI layered over the actors. The glossy textures and exaggerated movements weren’t particularly convincing, but the ’90s flick was excusable. It opted for high-flying adventure over creeping horror, so it didn’t have to be scary.^[6]

4 The Wolfman

Nearly as infamous as Dracula is the Wolfman. Portraying him was similarly simple in the 1941 film. As a guy suffering a canine curse, he’s a humanoid figure even after transforming. The difference is the wolflike head, killer claws, and hairy body. These accompany a feral desire to kill, making for an unpredictable foe. That said, all that you needed to create this animalistic adversary were masks, gloves, and prosthetics. Those days are long gone.

Filmmakers soon prioritized the wolf over the man. Werewolves continued appearing in fantasy franchises like Harry Potter and Twilight, where they became increasingly malformed. Some depictions just had them transform into giant dogs. Obviously, these renditions were computerized creations, the quality varying with the movie. As ever, the well-lit examples looked the worst. The poetic justice came with the 2010 Wolfman remake. This project resurrected the masked approach and blew its competition out of the water.^[7]

3 The Terminator

There is no fake but what we make. Terminators are cyborg assassins. They may look human, but beneath their skin are metallic endoskeletons. They use their fleshy disguises to infiltrate human societies and get close to their targets. Upon locating their quarry, these robotic villains execute their programming with unparalleled precision.

The Terminator films all used real actors to convey that deadly precision, but early entries had to improvise whenever these cyborgs sustained damage. Prosthetics worked for light wounds, but heavier injuries call for animatronics and stop motion. Filmmakers eventually began mixing in CGI, but practical effects were always present in some capacity.

Terminator Genisys and Dark Fate changed that by going all-in on digital imagery. The cyborgs in these flicks leaned heavily into liquid metal and nanotech. Combined with ever-more explosive chase scenes, these aspects left little room for practical tricks. Even the partial damage on the fleshy Terminators was now CGI. Sadly, it all looked utterly weightless and failed to blend with the organic bits at all. There’s a tragic irony in killer robots being made entirely on the computer.^[8]

2 The Kraken

The ocean holds many unseen calamities, but the greatest one is the Kraken. This giant squid has haunted sailors’ nightmares for centuries, and movie-goers easily could see why. Films like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea depicted this creature as a colossal killer preying on unsuspecting vessels. Long tentacles could pull an entire ship to the depths, and its submerged body made it nearly impossible to fight. That also meant that early filmmakers could get away with not showing the monster. The most that viewers got were the tentacles, which were a combination of stop motion and wirework. Of course, this workaround couldn’t last forever.

CGI eventually showed the Kraken in all its glory. The results predictably varied. Films like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest kept the creature somewhat obscured underwater, thereby sparing the FX artists from rendering the details and retaining the fear through mystery. Unfortunately, works like the Clash of the Titans remake had the Kraken leave the sea. At that point, it looked like any other semi-convincing monster. Long story short, it should have stayed in the depths.^[9]

1 Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs may have been real, but that didn’t make them any less spectacular. Thus, they’re Hollywood’s most enduring movie monsters. Since the dawn of cinema, these prehistoric lizards have terrified audiences through sheer size and crushing strength. A plethora of tricks have gone into recreating these titans. They range from stop motion to animatronics to costumes. One movie, however, changed everything.

That movie was Jurassic Park. Although it retained the animatronic approach for close-ups, it used revolutionary digital effects for wide shots. The detailed skin and fluid musculature created living, breathing animals. This achievement meant that subsequent filmmakers never looked back. Digital dinosaurs were soon running all over movies, TV shows, and documentaries. While these effects were rarely terrible, the best examples were those that mixed in the animatronics of old. You felt like you could touch them without waiting for rendering. ^[10]

Hollywood is a competitively unoriginal business. Studios constantly recycle the same stories, repackage them as new products, and ponder how to sell them better than their rivals. That pattern inevitably leads to battles at the box office. However, it’s also given way to a strange coincidence.

Sometimes, two studios may release twin movies within the same time frame. These films might boast similar narratives, or they could share a setting. Either way, they target the same market. This unlikely event raises the stakes as the flicks compete for viewers. It turns weekend matinees into close-quarters combat. That outcome may not be the filmmakers’ intent, but that’s how it works out. Seeing which project comes out on top is worth the price of admission.

10 Tombstone & Wyatt Earp

Few Old West figures are more famous than Wyatt Earp. Tombstone (1993) stars Kurt Russell as the gunslinger as he and his brothers serve as lawmen in the Arizona town. They soon run afoul of a cutthroat band, sparking a war that ravages the Earp family and propels the whole region into lawlessness. The tale has been told countless times. In fact, one of those attempts came six months later.
The aptly titled Wyatt Earp (1994) is more of a loving biopic. For one thing, it stars Kevin Costner, who is known for slow, reverent westerns. For another, it goes into greater depth regarding Wyatt’s life. The story covers the hero’s boyhood adventures, his early days working odd jobs, and his turbulent love life. Only after those events does he finally reach Tombstone and kick off the infamous feud with the Cowboys. As you’d expect, this treatment led to a much longer runtime and a less concise pace. That’s partly why it hasn’t resonated with audiences like its rival.^[1]

9 Braveheart & Rob Roy

Just as famous as western gunslingers were the Scottish Highlanders. Their struggles against the occupying British forces turned them into folk heroes. A beloved depiction of that conflict was Braveheart (1995). Mel Gibson directs and stars in this biopic about William Wallace. After losing his love and witnessing the tyranny of the foreign oppressors, the highland warrior unites the various clans in a bloody fight for freedom. The film caught some flak for historical inaccuracy, but its rousing emotionality earned it a special place in filmgoers’ hearts. That success, unfortunately, overshadowed another exceptional film.

In contrast, Rob Roy (1995) was a much smaller Highlander tale. Liam Neeson plays the roguish Robert Roy MacGregor. Although he initially tries to do business with the British, his family and friends soon come under threat from a psychotic aristocrat. Not only do these attacks devastate MacGregor and his stalwart sense of honor, but the ensuing violence makes him an outlaw in his own land. His journey felt more personal than Wallace’s, but it had a fraction of the fame.^[2]

8 Olympus Has Fallen & White House Down

The Die Hard format has spawned numerous imitations. Olympus Has Fallen (2013) takes that formula to the White House. The popcorn flick features Gerard Butler as a former Secret Service agent. When terrorists storm the capitol and take the president hostage, he must outwit the crooks. The long night sees him eliminate the villains in an increasingly brutal fashion. The resulting film was an entertaining successor to the hard-hitting action flicks of old. The same couldn’t be said of its own successor.

A few months later saw the release of White House Down (2013). This time, Channing Tatum takes the lead as a Secret Service applicant opposite Jamie Foxx as the president. The tale is more of an explosive buddy flick, but it still portrays the White House falling to terrorists. It was also reasonable fun. Sadly, this PG-13 attempt didn’t have the same punch as its R-rated competitor. That’s why Olympus Has Fallen turned into a franchise while White House Down faded into relative obscurity.^[3]

7 The Jungle Book & Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

It’s amazing how the same story can inspire radically different takes. Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book is a testament to that. After initially adapting it in 1966 as a lighthearted cartoon, Disney remade this treasured tale in 2016 as a live-action feature. At its core, it’s about a young boy raised by animals in the wilds of India. That said, the film takes most of its cues from the animation, leading to a whimsical adventure with familiar songs. People ate up that serving of nostalgia despite deviating from the original book.

By contrast, actor/director Andy Serkis gets closer to the source with Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Though in production at the same time as Disney’s version, this smaller take didn’t come out until 2018. It also portrays an orphaned child maturing in the jungle, but the tone, themes, and plotting are more in line with Kipling’s vision. Of course, those efforts also made it less digestible to a wider audience, leading to a niche response.^[4]

6 Mirror, Mirror & Snow White and the Huntsman

Also an enduring tale, Grimms’ “Snow White” has inspired even more renditions than The Jungle Book. 2012 saw two of them, the first being Mirror, Mirror (2012). It has the familiar framework: Lily Collins as the princess is hunted by Julia Roberts as the evil queen for being the “fairest of them all.” The twist is that it’s an upbeat comedy with flamboyant costumes and dance numbers. The following film couldn’t be more different in that respect.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) reinterprets the tale as a dark fantasy spectacle. The film stars Kristen Stewart as a traumatized heroine. Recruiting loyal allies from across the realm, she leads an army against Charlize Theron’s mystical queen. This approach emphasizes perilous action, seeming like a poor man’s Lord of the Rings at points. Neither of these attempts was a classic, but the latter was at least profitable enough to get a sequel.^[5]

5 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice & Captain America: Civil War

2016 was a year of superhero crossover clashes. The first major brawl occurred at DC with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fed up with the Man of Steel’s collateral damage, the Dark Knight wages a one-man war on the alien. Meanwhile, Superman can’t abide Batman’s brutal tactics and strives to shut him down. Their differences escalate to a grudge match spurred on by the villainous Lex Luthor. The scenario was a thinly veiled publicity stunt, one which Marvel pulled shortly after.

Captain America: Civil War fractures the Avengers. After the superheroes’ repeated destruction, the U.S. government proposes they sign over their services and only act under orders. Iron Man supports this oversight, while Captain America rejects it. Not only does this issue divide these two icons, but it splits the Avengers down the middle. Both these flicks suffer from messy plotting and poor characterization, but Civil War at least has more competent structuring and a less pretentious presentation.^[6]

4 Evil Dead & Cabin in the Woods

A classic horror setup involves a group of unsuspecting people in a remote cabin. Cabin in the Woods obviously adheres to that foundation. In this 2012 movie, a handful of college kids visit a woodland house for a creepy vacation. Upon staying there, they find themselves the targets of animalistic zombies. It turns out these creatures come from a shadowy organization that engineers the scenario as part of a sick experiment. In that, Cabin in the Woods subverts its own formula. Its competitor, on the other hand, plays it straight.

The Evil Dead helped popularize this premise, so the 2013 remake sticks to it. This flick once again strands a band of buddies in a cabin. One of them finds a hellish book amidst the refuse. Reading its passages brings forth an invasion of demons, who proceed to slaughter the party with sadistic glee. The story doesn’t hold as many surprises as its peer, but the more accomplished filmmaking and terrific presentation perfectly capture the series’ trademark dark humor. It’s possibly for that reason that Evil Dead has enjoyed more enduring love from genre fans.^[7]

3 The Great Race & Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines

One of the odder trends in Hollywood focused on globe-trotting races. The film largely responsible was The Great Race (1965). This comedy centers on the dashing Great Leslie and dastardly Professor Fate. To determine who is the best, these rival stuntmen propose a race from New York to Paris. This worldly contest draws drivers from all walks of life, leading to an epic journey of screwball antics. It wasn’t the only one, though.

Just a few days before came Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965). This farcical flick features another worldwide race, this time from London to Paris. Of course, that minor change doesn’t stop the event from attracting drivers of various nationalities. What differentiates the tale is the greater time spent on setup. The actual race doesn’t start until halfway through, making it feel like less of an exciting adventure compared to its competitor. Perhaps that’s why it’s less well-known. Then again, it got a sequel, while The Great Race didn’t. It’s funny how things work out.^[8]

2 Antz & A Bug’s Life

In the early days of computer-animated movies, it seemed like anything was possible. Why, then, were two of the biggest examples of the time about bugs? A Bug’s Life (1998) takes place in an ant colony. The timid insects suffer under a roving grasshopper gang, so misfit inventor Flik sets out to find warriors willing to fight the invaders. That proves tricky when the “warriors” turn out to be circus performers. The plot is predictable from there, which isn’t what you’d expect from Pixar’s second feature.

Oddly enough, DreamWorks narrowly beat its rival to the punch with Antz (1998). This story also deals with the little guys subverting the social hierarchy. Granted, the oppressor here is one of their own, but it still falls to an unassuming worker ant conjuring creative solutions to save his colony. Despite that general similarity, Antz uses novel twists for a more mature tone. Which miniature movie was better depended mainly on your preference, as both became mild success stories.^[9]

1 Robin Hood & Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

The Robin Hood legend is an endearing folktale about the common man rising up against his oppressors. Thus, countless adaptations have adapted this familiar story, but two 1991 attempts couldn’t be more different. The first was simply titled Robin Hood, starring Patrick Bergin. This low-budget project is fittingly understated. It frames the iconic narrative within the Saxon-Norman conflict. As a result, it’s more of a historical drama than a high-flying adventure. Audiences wanting the latter had to wait a month.

Soon after came Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Despite the odd choice to put Kevin Costner in the title role, this film is a more traditional take. It also has a gritty aesthetic and historical backdrop, but it mixes in the swashbuckling fun that fans know and love, creating an intriguing marriage of old and new. Both takes are adept at what they set out to do, but Prince of Thieves is more widely accessible. That’s probably why it scored a theatrical release while its competition opted for TV.^[10]

Turkish Urology Association President Prof. Dr. Bülent Semerci stated that Turkish men still have difficulty in going to the doctor to solve their sexual problems and that those who go cannot express their complaints and said, “Men who come to the urologist say “I have a urinary complaint.” When we talked a little and delved into the problem, they realized that their main purpose in coming to us was sexual dysfunction.”

Dr. In his statement to the AA correspondent, Semerci explained that the Turkish Urology Association was founded in 1933 by the gathering of 14 urologists, and that he has been the chairman of the association since December 2013.

Stating that approximately 1600 urology specialists are members of their associations in Turkey, they have 10 branches, they provide social relations between urologists and carry out educational activities, Semerci stated that they share new developments with their members by organizing various congresses.

Semerci stated that the presidents of the Turkish Urology Association have always been elected from Istanbul and that he was very honored and proud to bring the presidency to Izmir.

Filming a movie can get more emotional than you might expect—and we don’t just mean on camera when actors are required to show their emotions based on the scenes they’re in. Behind the scenes and away from the camera, tensions often rise to the point of creative differences polluting working relationships. Actors, producers, screenwriters, and directors can have heated arguments about where a film or television show is going or how they see a script playing out. And sometimes, that can lead to some extremely aggressive and contentious moments.

That’s what this list is all about, in fact. Today, we’ll tell the sordid tales of ten actors who got so angry at their co-stars and/or other co-workers that they stormed off set in the middle of filming. It’s obviously incredibly unprofessional to leave a project right in the middle of it. But for these ten actors, tensions got so high that they couldn’t help it. So, in each case, we’ll leave you to be the judge: were they being divas? Or were they justified in walking away from filming in the middle of a gig?

10 Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio

Back in 1989, James Cameron was busy directing The Abyss, which starred Ed Harris. Alongside that veteran actor was the talented actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. In one scene in the film, Mastrantonio’s character is called to sacrifice herself. Then, she is revived by Ed’s character. It’s a heavy scene and one in which Cameron directed Harris to scream at Mary Elizabeth and slap her during the revival. The duo filmed the scene over and over again—to the point where Cameron’s camera actually ran out of film. But the scene didn’t stop!

Even though there was no film rolling, nobody told Ed or Mary Elizabeth. They both continued the scene involving the awful slapping and screaming for an audience of no one. And when they found out that the emotionally challenging moment hadn’t even been filmed, Harris and Mastrantonio were both livid. Mary Elizabeth was so mad about it that she (understandably) stormed off the set.

Years later, Harris recalled the difficult moment—and Mary Elizabeth’s strong reaction to it—in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was slapping her across the face, and I see that they’ve run out of film in the camera—there’s a light on the camera—and nobody had said anything,” Harris said. “And Mary Elizabeth stood up and said, ‘We are not animals!’ and walked off the set. They were going to let me just keep slapping her around!” Wow. Pretty brutal!^[1]

9 Patrick Stewart

While he was working on the very first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, legendary actor Patrick Stewart once got so angry that he had to storm off set to contain himself. That seems unlikely based on Stewart’s impeccable reputation in Hollywood and among his fans, doesn’t it? But the incident really happened. And Stewart himself was the one who confirmed it while providing the context for the runaway!

Looking back on that difficult moment as part of his memoir Making It So, Stewart said that at the time, he was becoming mad over how he felt like his co-stars weren’t taking their work seriously. “I grew angry with the conduct of my peers,” Stewart wrote in the memoir, “and that’s when I called that meeting in which I lectured the cast for goofing off and responded to Denise Crosby’s, ‘We’ve got to have some fun sometimes, Patrick,’ comment by saying, ‘We are not here, Denise, to have fun.’” Whoa! And then he was gone—he stormed off to take a much-needed breather!

Stewart then went on to add: “In retrospect, everyone, me included, finds this story hilarious. But, in the moment when the cast erupted in hysterics at my pompous declaration, I didn’t handle it well. I didn’t enjoy being laughed at. I stormed off the set and into my trailer, slamming the door.” Hey, even the most beloved actors sometimes have moments of deep frustration.^[2]

8 Diana Rigg

While Diana Rigg was working on Game of Thrones, her frustration level at on-set antics was set to a hair trigger. It all started one day when she arrived on set to film her scenes when the crew was still setting up the shot. She recited her lines twice and then was asked to film a close-up as part of the scene. According to her former co-star Jessica Henwick, Rigg got so mad at the request that she simply walked off the set. And that was that!

Speaking to ET about Rigg’s rude on-set behavior, Henwick claimed: “[Rigg] walked onto the set, and she went, ‘I’m ready now!’ A cameraman came over and went, ‘Well, okay, but we haven’t finished setting up.’ She interrupted him and said, ‘Roll the cameras!’ And she just started doing her lines. She did two takes, and then the guy came over and was like, ‘Great, now we’re going to do a close-up.’ And she just stood up, and she went, ‘I’m done!’”

And Rigg really meant it, too—she was DONE! Rigg, who died at 82 years old in 2020, couldn’t walk very fast at that point in her life, but she stormed off set to whatever degree that she could. Henwick explained: “Now, she can’t walk fast. She has to be helped. So basically, we just sat there and watched as Diana Rigg effectively did her own version of storming off the set, but it was at 0.1 miles per hour. She cracked me up.” Now, it cracks us up, too!^[3]

7 Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage was filming the movie The Old Way when he stormed off the set because the crew was putting everyone’s safety in jeopardy. The film’s armorer at the time (the person on set in charge of firearms and weapons) was Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. You may know that name, as she was also the armorer on the set of Rust when a gun Alec Baldwin was holding discharged unexpectedly, wounding the movie’s director and killing the cinematographer. Well, on the set of The Old Way prior to that, Gutierrez-Reed apparently failed to go through proper firearm safety protocols.

According to key grip Stu Brumbaugh, who worked on that film with Hannah, she allegedly fired live ammunition twice on set in a span of just three days—and she failed to warn cast members and crew workers each time. After the second firing incident, Cage flipped out and ran off set. Per The Wrap, he reportedly yelled in anger at Gutierrez-Reed over the two shootings: “Make an announcement, you just blew my f**king eardrums out!” Knowing what happened later on Rust, which eventually led to Gutierrez-Reed being sentenced to 18 months in prison on voluntary manslaughter charges, makes the Nicolas Cage incident that much more alarming.^[4]

6 James Caan

It all came down to choking (or possibly coughing) on a cookie. The late James Caan was busy filming a movie called Nailed when he got into an on-set fight with the director of the film, David O. Russell. At the time, Caan was filming a scene that called for his character to choke to death while eating a cookie. Russell wasn’t convinced about Caan’s portrayal of the choking incident, though. The director asked the legendary actor if he might consider doing both—coughing AND choking—with the cookie lodged in his character’s throat.

Caan pointed out (correctly, by the way) that you can’t exactly cough and choke at the same time. After all, if you’re able to cough, enough air is getting in and out that you’re not literally choking, you know? Russell didn’t see it that way, though. He took umbrage at Caan’s hesitance and then asked the veteran thespian if they could film the scene both ways and see which one turned out better. Caan didn’t care to do that, and he’d had enough with Russell. He stormed off the set and left the project. His part in the film was quickly recast.^[5]

5 Sharon Stone

Back in 2014, news broke that actress Sharon Stone had stormed off the set of the movie A Golden Boy. The film’s director, an Italian man named Pupi Avati, went to the media and took Stone to task for supposedly being unprofessional. He claimed that there had been too many people milling about on set for Stone’s liking while they were shooting. So, in the heat of the moment and after getting mad at all the people watching her work, Stone rushed away from the film and refused to shoot any more scenes until most of the non-essential crew left.

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter after the fact, Avati claimed: “She immediately disappeared. We looked for her everywhere, but nothing! Then my brother received a phone call from Los Angeles from her manager: she wouldn’t come back on the set until the photographers and especially that damned TV cameramen had gone away. Obviously, we did so, and she, like nothing happened, shot the scene.” Sounds like diva behavior, doesn’t it?

Only maybe it didn’t quite happen like that. After Avati’s words reached the eyes and ears of media consumers worldwide, Stone’s camp pushed back hard at the allegations. When questioned about it, her reps flatly denied that Sharon had ever stormed off the set of A Golden Boy. That denial left the rumblings to die down well enough to the point where the media buzz was curtailed. But forever after, Stone’s career has been associated with that supposed on-set meltdown.^[6]

4 Chevy Chase

Toward the end of the third season of Community, iconic comedic actor Chevy Chase had such a difficult moment with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, that he stormed off set. And the bitterness followed Chase so closely that Harmon had him booted from the show after that season! Per Deadline, tensions had been high between Chase and Harmon for a while as the production of the third season got into the swing of things. That included multiple prior walk-outs by Chase, who was protesting the way Harmon ran the show and treated his subordinates.

Then, during the final episode of the season, Chase had it, and he stormed off set one more time. While the specific disagreement that time around wasn’t reported, the continued contentious behavior between the two of them was enough to seal the deal. Chase’s final storm-out was the last straw for Harmon, who booted Chase from future seasons.

To make things even more interesting, at the next day’s cast and crew wrap party, Harmon gave a speech about the incident to everyone assembled. In his remarks, Harmon allegedly slammed Chase with some very harsh words sent out in front of everyone. That enraged Chase even further, and he again walked out—this time, leaving early from the wrap party. The next day, he called Harmon’s phone and left an equally scathing voicemail. Bitterness all around!^[7]

3 Joaquin Phoenix

Scarlett Johansson came across co-star Joaquin Phoenix in a perilous place while the two were working on Her together. Awkwardly, the duo was filming an orgasm scene for the production when Phoenix abruptly had to excuse himself from the set. Johansson could commiserate with him on it, though, as even she thought the scene was “bizarre” and “gross.”

She revealed those thoughts—and Phoenix’s self-removal from the Her set—later in an interview on the Armchair Expert podcast. Explaining the situation to podcast host Dax Shepard, Johansson said: “We tried to get through one take, and he was like, losing it. He left the studio. He needed a break. You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having an orgasm. You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having a fake orgasm. Ew.” Ew indeed!

Interestingly, that’s not even the only time Phoenix has left the set in the middle of a production over something difficult that was taking place on camera. While filming The Joker, director Todd Phillips revealed that Phoenix was known to very often rush away from set “in the middle of the scene.” Phoenix would just “walk away and walk out” of the studio in certain unpredictable moments if he “wasn’t feeling it” with what was happening in the script. Oookay!^[8]

2 Frankie Muniz

Frankie Muniz didn’t just storm off the set when he was a child starring on the sitcom Malcolm in the Middle.” No, he stormed off set… and then didn’t return for more than two months! The walk-out came in a bid to protest the toxic environment that the show’s producers had supposedly foisted upon Muniz and the other child stars on the show. Years later, while Muniz was starring on the Australian reality TV show I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here, he very cryptically detailed what happened. But he clearly still felt some type of way about it because he only referred to those creating the toxicity as “certain people” rather than naming them by name.

“There were two episodes I’m not in,” Muniz remembered years later as an adult during his time on the reality TV series that filmed Down Under. “I walked off the set. Everyone was so afraid to stand up when certain people were controlling or rude or disrespectful. Like, they walked on pins and needles… I was so mortified by seeing people afraid to stand up for themselves, I was like, ‘Say something.’ I didn’t care if they told me I was never going back because it was worth it to me.” Hey, at least he had a good reason for rushing away. Hopefully, things got better after that!^[9]

1 Emma Watson

Emma Watson’s guest-starring turn on This Is the End created a cascade of rumors that she had stormed off the set in the middle of filming. As the story went, Watson supposedly had a major disagreement with star Seth Rogen and the producers over a last-minute change in the script. And as it turns out, that rumor was true—Emma really did leave the set in the middle of filming. But it wasn’t quite for the reason that the rumor-spreaders initially thought. Oh, and it also didn’t help that Rogen himself fanned the flames of those rumors when he spoke to British GQ about the movie and suggested Watson had run away from production after a heated disagreement.

Once the rumors really started churning online, Rogen was forced to take to Twitter and confirm them while debunking some key details. “The scene was not what was originally scripted,” Rogen wrote when it came to what happened with Watson leaving the set. “It was getting improvised, changed drastically, and it was not what she agreed to. The narrative that she was in some way uncool or unprofessional is complete bull s**t. I, for sure, should have communicated better, and because I didn’t, she was put in an uncomfortable situation. She and I spoke on the night; it was overall a s**tty situation, and it must have been hard for her to say something. And I’m happy and impressed that she did. We agreed on her not being in the scene together.” So she DID storm off set—but apparently had a pretty good reason for doing so!^[10]

Certain big movies feel inseparable from their directors, seeming to extend directly from the unique stylistic, thematic, and dramatic places that make those directors who they are on screen. But film productions are more fluid than many of us realize, with frequently more than one filmmaker coming and going before the picture actually gets made. And, surprisingly often, Steven Spielberg is at one or the other end of this process!

These are just a few of the many, many massive movies that have come close to being made by a totally different talent before fate, death, financiers, or good old-fashioned bad timing intervened.

10 Solaris (2002)

Steven Soderbergh’s only science-fiction movie to date is, perplexingly, a remake of Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece Solaris (1972). Despite initial reluctance from audiences to approach the movie with an open mind, Solaris won out against its critics (for the most part) by leaning into Soderbergh’s gritty yet visually awe-inspiring directorial style and has stood the test of time.

However, James Cameron was originally going to helm the 2002 project. The Terminator director spent several years securing the rights to Solaris with an eye to conducting the remake himself. 20th Century Fox wanted Soderbergh to make a science-fiction picture, and, knowing that Cameron had the rights, Soderbergh took his shot with the veteran director.

Surprisingly, Cameron said yes, allowing Soderbergh to helm the project and side-stepping into the producer’s chair. And while some producers can be tremendously overbearing—especially if they wanted to make the movie themselves—Cameron trusted the younger director’s vision and took a hands-off approach, even allowing Soderbergh to depart from the original narrative.^[1]

9 Schindler’s List (1993)

The iconic Holocaust movie Schindler’s List feels like it could only have been directed by Steven Spielberg, given how deeply enmeshed it is with his filmic sensibilities and Eastern European Jewish heritage. Yet Irish-Catholic New Yorker Martin Scorsese was once attached to direct the picture.

This was during a turbulent period when Spielberg felt he simply couldn’t crack the script for Schindler’s List, touring it around a number of different writers and doubting his own abilities to tackle such a big subject. He gave it to Scorsese, feeling that the Taxi Driver director wouldn’t shy away from the violence, but eventually, Spielberg reneged on it, feeling that he’d “given away a chance to do something for [his] children and family about the Holocaust.”

Not only that, but Daniel Day-Lewis was originally in consideration to play Oskar Schindler when Scorsese was still in the director’s chair. However, when Spielberg took over, Day-Lewis moved on with Scorsese to film The Age of Innocence, and the role of Schindler went to Liam Neeson.^[2]

8 Cape Fear (1991)

The story of how Steven Spielberg came to direct Schindler’s List is inseparably tied to how Martin Scorsese came to direct Cape Fear. Spielberg was the first director on board with the crime thriller, but after being involved throughout development, he opted to trade Scorsese this picture for Schindler’s List.

The two directors arranged a trade in which Spielberg put Scorsese onto Cape Fear and reclaimed Schindler’s List for himself. And it’s lucky that they did because Cape Fear—with Robert De Niro in the lead role as a violent ex-convict who seeks vengeance against the public defender who he blames for his jail sentence—is Scorsese through and through.

But that’s not where the Jurassic Park director’s involvement with the property ends. Both Spielberg and Scorsese are currently lined up as executive producers of a TV adaptation of Cape Fear, which draws from John D. MacDonald’s original novel The Executioners while adopting a 21st-century setting to examine the U.S.A.’s present obsession with true crime.^[3]

7 Dune (1984)

Despite Denis Villeneuve’s recent success with it, Frank Herbert’s sprawling epic science-fiction series Dune has been notoriously difficult to adapt. Several attempts to make it were abandoned in the 20th century, before David Lynch’s maligned version, which put financiers off the property for several decades.

Given how much material Lynch needed to cram into a 137-minute runtime, it is little surprise that his film failed. But perhaps it would have succeeded in the hands of a director a little more suited to the subject matter—say, Alien and Blade Runner director Ridley Scott.

Scott was, in fact, attached to the film before Lynch. Hired by producer Dino De Laurentiis (who remained as producer after Scott left the project and shepherded in the subsequent disasterpiece), Scott worked on the script and had big ideas for the franchise. However, one trip to the set in Mexico that De Laurentiis had chosen to cut costs, and everything changed. Scott felt he couldn’t work in the sub-standard conditions the studio offered and went off to make the Tom Cruise fantasy flop Legend instead.^[4]

6 Alien: Resurrection (1997)

Many of the hardcore fanbase consider every Alien movie made after James Cameron’s 1986 sequel Aliens to be heresy against Ridley Scott’s original vision. Yet there is plenty to love in this mishmash of xenomorph content. Take Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection, which combines action, humor, and a late-1990s aesthetic in an original, far-future story the like of which the franchise had never seen.

But the project almost went to a very different flavor of ’90s director—Danny Boyle. With Trainspotting and Shallow Grave already in the can, Boyle was a leading light of the decade, and Fox was keen to snap him up.

As a huge fan of the series, as well as Joss Whedon’s script—which was set to reintroduce the psychological and sexual overtones that Cameron and Alien 3 director David Fincher had largely ignored—Boyle was set to make his blockbuster debut. However, when it came down to it, the indie director felt intimidated by the scale of the picture and the level of special effects required. He was unwilling to meet studio demands to craft the film into an action flick in the vein of Aliens.^[5]

5 Spider-Man (2002)

Alongside Bryan Singer (X-Men), Sam Raimi was one of the first directors to show what superheroes could do on the big screen, paving the way for the MCU with his Spider-Man movies. Against all odds, the director’s quirky, dynamic, often slapstick style, which he had honed in low-budget horror pictures, was successfully brought to bear on the web-slinger’s world, creating a cinematic icon in the process.

How different things could have been if Chris Columbus, who is known for his warm, sensible, family-friendly movies, had stuck with the project. Spider-Man was Columbus’s childhood hero and one of the reasons he became a creative, so it was a perfect fit, especially as Sony wanted to court a family vibe to make as big a box office as possible on their 139-million-dollar movie.

But Columbus was hoping to snag Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at the same time. He was so invested in Potter that he wrote up his own director’s version of the script in preparation for his meeting with the executives. He delivered a passionate 45-minute speech on why he ought to direct. Thus, when offered both Spider-Man and Potter—just a day apart—he went with his gut, not his heart.^[6]

4 Good Will Hunting (1997)

Good Will Hunting managed the unthinkable by transporting writer-stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck from relative obscurity onto the Hollywood A-list, netting them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in the process. It didn’t hurt that they had veteran comic Robin Williams on board from early in the process. Producer-mogul Harvey Weinstein bought the movie for over $1 million before helping them find their director.

Mel Gibson was the first big name attached to the film, having demonstrated his ability to deliver a major production in the William Wallace historical epic Braveheart. Having never actually seen Braveheart, Damon and Affleck pretended they had while courting the actor-director, and he was convinced by them and their script to come on board.

Unfortunately, Gibson was terribly slow moving, developing the film over many months, and Damon approached him to ask if they could move forward with someone else. Gibson agreed, and indie auteur Gus Van Sant—who was enamored with the script—signed on, reining in the more avant-garde elements of his filmmaking to create a true Hollywood classic.^[7]

3 Jaws (1974)

Jaws, the original blockbuster, saw Steven Spielberg take a story about a killer shark and make cinematic history despite all manner of pre-production and on-set mishaps along the way. While it made the director’s name and paved the way for a stupendous career, he almost didn’t get the position.

Spielberg was just a junior director with few films to his name and fewer successes. Still, the producers knew about him and liked him so much that they let him look at the script while they already had another director signed on to make the movie—Dick Richards.

Thankfully, for pretty much everyone involved, Richards dropped the ball at the beginning of production. During an important meeting between the producers, the writer, and Richards, the Tootsie director kept calling the shark a whale, and Peter Benchley—writer of the original novel—took umbrage. As a result, the producers got rid of Richards and gave Spielberg the opportunity of his life. He was their preferred choice from early on, but it’s not like they were looking for just any reason to do this…^[8]

2 Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Dallas Buyers Club transformed Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto in the eyes of the film-viewing world with a groundbreaking drama about stigma and healthcare during the AIDS epidemic in the American South. According to the research, the region where physical violence was mentioned most was Central Anatolia, and the region where it was mentioned least was Eastern Black Sea. The prevalence of exposure to severe violent behavior is highest in Central Anatolia and Western Anatolia.

While the rate of exposure to sexual violence across Turkey is determined to be 12 percent, the regions where sexual violence is most frequently expressed are Central Anatolia, Eastern Marmara, Western Marmara and Western Black Sea. “Women having sexual intercourse even though they don’t want to, because they are afraid” was the most frequently expressed sexual violence behavior.

44 percent of the women participating in the research reported emotional violence; 30 percent stated that they were exposed to economic violence.

”Marital status affects the rate of violence”
In the preliminary report, it was stated that marital status is the main feature that has the greatest impact on the level of violence, and said, “The level of physical and/or sexual violence that divorced or separated women are exposed to is 75 percent, which is twice the rate of violence experienced among all women.” “This situation suggests that violence itself may be the reason for divorce.”


It was determined that the level of violence experienced by unmarried but partnered women was 7 percent.

In the preliminary report, it was stated that the violence that women are exposed to decreases as the level of education increases, but it is noteworthy that more than a quarter of high school graduates and one fifth of women with a university degree or higher are exposed to physical and sexual violence.

According to the research, it was determined that 26 percent of women in Turkey were married before the age of 18, while there was a significant relationship between the age of marriage and the level of violence, and physical violence was 48 percent among women who married early and 31 percent among women who married after the age of 18.

19 percent of women who married at an early age and 10 percent of women who married after the age of 18 were subjected to sexual violence; It was determined that half of the women who married early were exposed to physical and/or sexual violence.

It seems that “family decision” is effective in early marriages, and “own will” is effective in marriages after the age of 18. While “official and religious marriage” came to the fore in marriages in both periods, it was revealed that the rate of increasing the age for marriage in early marriages was 13.3 percent.



”Men become more violent as they get older”
According to the research, as the age of men increases, the proportion of those who have committed physical violence also increases. However, a different age pattern emerges for sexual violence. Men in the youngest age group commit more sexual violence than men aged 25-34 and 35-44.

There are no significant differences in the percentage of physical and sexual violence between men who are employed and those who are not.

According to the research, 9 percent of women are exposed to sexual abuse during childhood, before the age of 15, 29 percent of the abuse is from male relatives, and 38 percent is from strangers.

It is mostly the fathers who prevent women, 32 percent of whom say that they are “prevented from attending school”, from participating in working life.

Approximately 3 out of every 10 women in Türkiye are subjected to stalking at least once. The most common forms of persistent stalking include “constant phone calls, sending text messages, letters or e-mails, following through social media, and disturbing the woman by coming to the place where she works or lives.” These types of tracking are mostly carried out by “strangers”.

“Threatening to commit suicide if she doesn’t meet”, “Threatening the woman if she doesn’t meet”, “Threatening to harm the woman’s children or family if she doesn’t meet” are mostly done by the woman’s ex-husband or her partner.

“Physical violence” still occurs during pregnancy
The research revealed that one quarter of women exposed to physical and/or sexual violence were injured as a result of violence. It was determined that this rate was 6 percent higher in women living in cities than in women living in rural areas.

It was revealed that among women who were exposed to violence, those who reported their health status as “bad or very bad” were twice as likely as women who were not exposed to violence.

One-third of women exposed to violence have “thought of committing suicide” at some point in their lives; It was revealed that women who were victims of violence were five times more likely to attempt suicide than women who did not experience this victimization.

According to the results of the same research conducted in 2008, exposure to physical violence during pregnancy, which was 10 percent, was found to be 8 percent according to the results of the research in 2014.

The rate of women who have been subjected to physical violence during pregnancy, at 11 percent, is highest among women living in the Northeastern Anatolia region, who are uneducated or have not completed primary school, and who are at a low welfare level. (AA)

DRUGS USED
Physical and psychiatric diseases such as overactive or underactive adrenal glands, low thyroid hormones, depression and anxiety disorders can also reduce sexual desire. In addition, the medications used in these diseases can also cause a decrease in sexual desire. He is extremely and constantly energetic. There is a tendency to be impulsive. Creativity has improved. It has a procrastinating nature. It can adapt. He is optimistic. He is very unreliable because he has difficulty keeping his promises due to impulsivity. Can be uncontrollable, disorganized and aggressive. The question is clear: Are you committed or dependent in your relationship? First tied, then dependent
Psk. Başak Tanrıverdi says that in relationships, women usually first become attached to men and then they can become dependent, and adds: “Because we are a patriarchal society, there are certain adjectives given to women. When the concept of independence comes together with the word woman, it is not welcomed and is interpreted as a simple, irresponsible woman. However, for men, independence means power,” he says. Psk stated that this point of view became the learned helplessness of women after a while due to the communication of girls with their fathers, fathers’ different and more protective behavior towards their daughters, and the fact that they attach great importance to the concept of honour. Tanrıverdi said, “The daughter expects the same protective approach from her husband in the future, and that spouse is also suitable for this due to her upbringing. Since boys grow up with the knowledge that being ‘dependent’ means henpecked, they have to pretend to be independent even when they want to be dependent. This actually creates a big psychological problem for men. The system maintains itself in this way. As the woman compromises her independence in this way, the man becomes active, a false identity is formed, and he turns into someone he is not. “I generally see marriages in Turkey this way,” he says.

Working is not enough
Women’s entry into business life, which was once dominated only by men, does not actually change the system much. The distribution of roles and learnings that women have inherited now cause confusion. Psk. Başak Tanrıverdi stated that what is important is not whether women work or not and said, “We also know women who work from morning to evening, go home and get beaten by their husbands, and then pay their husbands to have fun. Of course, women’s employment is a huge step, especially for the new generation. However, women still remain passive when it comes to money. Money, which is the symbol of power, should be in the hands of men. If a woman earns a higher salary than her husband, she feels uneasy. Men also have addictions
So how independent are men really? Psk. Tanriverdi says this should also be discussed. Although research shows that women get depressed more often, it turns out that it is actually men who get depressed after divorce. When a man is no longer in her life, a woman can continue her life, keeping the house organized, cooking food on the stove, and taking care of the children, while the man has a hard time because he is used to being ready. In this sense, it seems that men have also become dependent on women. The only difference is that men are not very aware of this because of the power society gives them. Even if they are aware, they pretend not to be worried about being ostracized.

Are you truly independent?
While we see ourselves as independent women of modern society, it is possible to suddenly look at our relationship and realize that we are actually “dependent”… Being dependent in a relationship always means compromising yourself, putting everything on the other party, and trying to fulfill their wishes. If you are happy with your life, if you can do what you want to do and if you do not worry about it, if you believe that you can stand on your own feet without your husband, you can talk about love, affection and commitment. Psk. Tanrıverdi says that the role of motherhood can also cause confusion in women, that many women who become mothers attribute too much “I” to themselves, and while society sanctifies motherhood, mothers can hold on to the expression “I am a mother” too much, and even subconsciously cover up their problems with their spouses and try to achieve what they want through the child. . At this stage, the mother becomes dependent on the child. If the child does not turn out to be what the mother dreamed of, it is depression that knocks on the door again. Psk. Tanrıverdi said, “If a woman works, does the job she wants, can change herself as she wishes, stands on her own feet, establishes balance in her relationships with her partner, her husband, her partner’s family, and allows her child to exist as herself, she is an independent woman who can stand and that relationship is dependent on dependency.” “It is not a relationship of commitment,” he says. Although this definition includes the phrase “doing the job she wants”, in fact, a woman’s independence does not require her to work. While there may be relationships where people earn a lot of money but it doesn’t mean anything when they come home, there are also women who take care of their children even though they are not working or divorced, who pick themselves up quickly even if they get depressed, and who know that they have a lot more to do in life for themselves and their children.

Relationship addicts
We also see women who cannot do without being in a constant relationship. Maybe we are one of them. Factors such as the woman’s loving relationship with her parents and her first relationship experience play a role here. If you cannot live without someone else, if you are afraid that your current partner will leave your life, if you wonder what you will do if he/she leaves, if you want to break up but cannot do so due to fear of loneliness and if you are constantly waiting for approval, you may suspect relationship addiction.

If there is no man, there is shopping
When talking about women and addiction, it is impossible not to think of shopping addictions… Here too, there is definitely an issue underlying the desire to be attached to something. Although this issue may vary for everyone, a common way to suppress it is shopping addiction. Cleaning addiction also occurs for similar reasons. Underneath it all lies the coding of false schemas in the subconscious. However, when it comes to addiction in relationships, this is not as noticeable as in other issues. On the contrary, it is appreciated that a woman is dependent on a man. Men also prefer these women. Independent women are loved neither by their peers nor by men.

Beware of overly giving men

Few action heroines have matched the heights of Sarah Connor. With her son destined to lead the humans to victory against genocidal machines, this unassuming woman had to grow up fast to defend herself and her child from time-traveling assassins. Linda Hamilton lent intense pathos to that journey in The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).

5 Stephanie Nadolny

Goku is one of the most beloved anime heroes of all time. Considering his storied history, he’s had numerous actors voice him at various stages of his life. For his younger years, though, the mainstay English portrayal came courtesy of Stephanie Nadolny. Her slight rasp made her convincing as a little boy, but she also perfectly captured the wholesome enthusiasm inherent to this energetic fighter. Beginning in 1999, she played the child version of Goku (and his son, Gohan) in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and all the accompanying movies and games.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) brought back several legacy characters, but the one with the longest absence was Blade.
