Five guys, thirty years, one photo

Five teenagers sat down and posed for a picture at Copco Lake in 1982, they didn't plan on making it a tradition. But that's what it became.

Every five years for the past three decades, John Wardlaw, John Dickson, Mark Rumer, Dallas Burney and John Molony have been meeting at the California lake and taking the same photo.

The first photograph of the high school friends was just happenstance. Wardlaw, known as Wedge in the group, had a family cabin at the lake where the friends gathered in July 1982.

While hanging out on the deck of the cabin, Dickson, or J.D., set his 35-millimeter camera on self-timer to take a group photo. 5 guys vacation pic a huge hit online...

"For some reason, we all chose to have dark and mysterious expressions on our faces," said Wardlaw. "I'm sure we all thought we were being really cool."

Though they tried a couple of poses, the one that would eventually win as the official vacation photo depicts the five teens, three of them shirtless, with shaggy hair typical of the time. They were about 19 years old.

Molony, known in the group as Belves, is pictured holding a Folgers Instant Coffee jar, which contained a cockroach the guys had decided to keep as a pet. They fed their new friend with a piece of butterscotch candy and kept it company with a photograph of Robert Young.

"Priorities were so different back then. All I was really thinking about was summer and girls," said Wardlaw.

As the men went into their college years, they continued to return to the lake every summer. They spent their time fishing and reading and playing roles in homemade movies shot by Wardlaw, who is now a filmmaker.

"We're all very creative people, so we would take all of our creative energy and focus it into a certain direction," said Molony. "It wasn't, 'Let's all get together and get drunk.' It was, 'Let's get together and see who can make the funniest joke or pull off the sneakiest prank.'"

The men never drank on the trip. It has always been good, clean fun.

At least fairly clean: One year Wardlaw turned on the water to take a shower, and it was running brown. He removed the shower head to find a beef bullion cube.

"When I went back to the living room, the guys were all chuckling and I said something like 'beefy goodness' and they all exploded with laughter," he said.

But it wasn't until five summers later when Wardlaw, a photography enthusiast, decided it would be fun to recreate the photograph they'd taken in '82.

In 1987, the now college-educated men sat in the same position on the same bench, again with a self-timed camera. The jar, a different one this time, contained no cockroach, and the hat held by Wardlaw was different as well. The expressions however, were unchanged.

"I think I had a feeling this might become some cool tradition, but I had no idea we would still be doing it for 30 years," said Wardlaw.

In 1997, 15 years after the original photo, the men, then in their mid-30s, decided to solidify the photo as a tradition they would continue every five years for the rest of their lives.

As the ritual became more concrete and when digital cameras were introduced, the group became more picky over the details of the photo, going as far as to wear the same clothes, and designate an official jar and hat as props. Hairstyles have changed over the years and with the march of time they abandoned the bare-chested motif.

"Watch us lose hair and gain forehead, gain and lose and gain and lose weight," Dickson posted on a website he maintains devoted to the tradition. "There are reasons we all decided it was better to take the photo with our shirts on."

Now, the friends also take the time to film the ordeal, and interview each other concerning the last five years' events.

The guys all agree that this trip has been the glue that has allowed them to maintain their friendships.

"It's kind of an organic relationship that's evolved not just from being high school buddies but from having common passions for life," Molony said.

Over the years, the friends have played parts in the milestones of each others' lives, including being in each others' weddings.

"I look at the photos and think of the relationships I went through," said Dickson. "Wedding rings come and go, if you look closely."

Dickson, who now works as a restaurant columnist, got married in mid-July and had some of the guys in his wedding. In June, all five friends celebrated Dickson's bachelor party at the 30-year anniversary of their Copco Lake tradition.

Molony, who has since relocated to New Orleans and works for UPS, is married, as is Wardlaw, who made a career of his love for photography and film. Burney is a fourth-grade teacher. Rumer, known as "Kram," now resides in Oregon and has retired after owning his own electronics company. None of the men have children yet.

"We plan on doing this for the rest of our lives, no matter what," said Dickson. "Up until there's one guy just sitting in the same pose! Even then, maybe someone will take a picture of an empty bench for us."

The seven pictures to date are framed and hang on the wall of the cabin. The men still listen to the same '80s music they were listening to when they were 19 years old.

"I'm not in the same place I thought I'd be, but I'm in the right place," said Dickson. "Without this photo, there's no way we'd be together."

The famous saying “ Once you go Black, you never go back!”. I think I heard this saying when I was in grade 5. I didn’t know the meaning of this till I was in grade 7. I still clearly don’t understand the saying. I’ve also talked to some black guys that have dated white girls and their response was different. They found the white girls more innocent, they found them clean and exotic. The thing is when black and white come together I think both parties try really hard to fulfill their stereotypes or live up to them, so the black man actually WORKS harder towards pleasing his woman more than he would with his black partner and thus reinforces the belief.

Definitely, a decade ago it was not common practice. May be white women did want to date black men before but the law and other things were preventing them from dating or getting married. Interracial dating and marriages became very common in the 90s and in the present time more and more white girls are dating black men. It is actually a good idea for the future of man kind because people need to understand that there is nothing wrong with interracial marriages.

Is it true that they have more then average?

I think this is a myth because there is no evidence to back it up. It all depends on the person, even in White, Asian or in any other race there are guys with more then average size inside the pants. I think the media has made people believe that black men always have more then average. So I don think white girls are after black men for that. May be they want to experience how it feels but I don't think they go back and date black guys because of their size.

So then why are they going out with them?

There are numerous reason why white girls are interested in black men. It can be because they love the person they are with. It can be because they want to experience how it feels to be with a different race. Another reason can be because they feel that they look or feel unique by having a black boyfriend. Also because they treat them good and make them feel like a queen.

Did you guys know that Madonna is like, so cool? Look at this picture up here? She’s decorating her back with a message of support for Barack Obama, and, like, you know, she ironically said that Barack Obama is a Muslim. The problem is her funny joke wasn’t so funny, because she’s not a comedian, and people are stupid. Some people thought that was serious.
She then had to apologise afterwards. “I was being ironic on stage,” she said. “Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim – though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?” (Quick tip: if you have to point out your irony afterwards, you’re not doing it right. It’d be like me making a joke, you not getting it, then me painstakingly running you through why the joke is funny after.)
The problem is that Madge has made her career based on the fact that she’s one to shy away from normality and attempt to be shocking. That works when you’re 18 or 19, and even works through your twenties. You can still lash out against society and its ridiculous norms at that age. But when you’re in your fifties, it becomes a little dispirting and sad.

You’ve had children, for Christ’s sake. No parent is cool. No parent is shocking. You could be a parent and say “well, I still occasionally dabble in the odd cocaine-fuelled transvestite orgy and it somehow becomes twee because we know that behind it all you have dependents and responsibilities. We know that ultimately, you have to go home at night and tuck Lourdes into bed.
But really, even when she was younger, Madonna wasn’t known for striking the right tone. Take for example the reason the entire city of Toronto thinks she’s kind of a bitch, really. Kenya Moore (Miss USA 93) takes shots at Cynthia Bailey #RHOA

Kenya Moore didn’t waste much time stirring up drama during the fifth season of Real Housewives of Atlanta. Moore, who was allegedly hired to be the new troublemaker on the show, took aim at Cynthia Bailey Sunday night. In the season premiere, Bailey held a JET Magazine model audition at her modeling agency to pick a ‘Beauty of the Week.’ Bailey and Moore were judges at the event. But things quickly went sour when Moore was extremely rude to the auditioning models. As the candidates walked the runway, Moore said to one model: “I’m not trying to be a mean girl. But why are you here?” To another: “That’s a man. … I’m serious. I was looking for an Adam’s apple.”
Instead of Bailey checking Moore for her rude behavior, her assistant tried to put the former Miss USA in her place.
But it was short-lived because she called her security to push him away. Bailey finally got a backbone at this point and told the security that Carlton worked for her. She then made a comment that Moore shouldn’t have security because no one knows her. After Moore watched the episode she took a few jabs at Bailey on her Bravo blog.
Moore said:

Why does Kenya have security when no one knows who she is?” First of all, I wouldn’t need personal security if Cynthia didn’t recruit randoms via Craig’s List or Twitter. Secondly, it’s obvious Cynthia does not read, watch television, and has been under a rock when I exploded on the scene years ago. Bailey revealed how she felt about the rift to the Hollywood Reporter.
“I clashed with Kenya first before any of the other girls did — which should have been a sign,” Bailey told the Hollywood Reporter. “I really think I’m one of the easiest girls to get along with on the show but we clashed out of the gate.… That’s not really my personality to get into it with somebody the first time I meet them for 10 minutes.”

So, what do you do when no one’s paying attention to your music? You pull a publicity stunt!
These days, the traditional means of getting attention involves exposure of your body parts. I guess Soulja Boy decided to give it a try as he “accidentally” posted a revealing photo of himself on tumblr…

The young rapper shocked everyone when he uploaded a naked full frontal photo of himself to his Tumblr blog. Since we live in the internet age, as you all know, once you put something on the internet, you can never fully take it back. So unfortunately for Soulja Boy, deleting the photo from his blog did absolutely nothing. Within minutes, the photo went viral, hitting numerous gossip blogs and social networks. Soulja Boy claims that the whole incident isn’t a publicity stunt, and that the photo made the appearance on the blog by accident.

He later blogged on his Tumblr an apology to his fans and anyone else who caught a glimpse of his “little soulja.” He writes:

“I apologize to ever [sic] seen that, accident.”

It’s kind of tough to accidentally blog a nude photo, and the timing of the whole thing seems…suspect. Especially since he is currently promoting a mix tape.Soulja Boy leaked his penis on the web in just enough time to promote his new mixtape.
This wouldn’t be the first time that Soulja Boy has been accused of relying on a publicity stunt to save his less than hot career. The rapper is said to have faked a Twitter beef with Bow Wow to help promote his mix tape and help Bow Wow increase the declining ratings of 106 & Park.

5 Ways to Make Your Relationship Romantic

Creating magical moments in your relationship is easy and fun. It is something everyone thinks about, but few people do. Perhaps it's because they actually can't think of exactly what to do. Here are five "acts of love" that you can do with and for your partner to bring a little more romance into your relationship.

1. Make your morning time special by bringing your partner a cup of coffee while he or she is still in bed. If you're willing and able you can also serve them breakfast in bed. It will make your partner feel cherished and the kindness will be returned.

2. Make the time at the end of the work-day when you first see one another extra special by giving each other a 10 second hug and kiss. You will both feel more deeply connected throughout the evening. Also remember to touch your partner affectionately throughout the day, not just when you want to be romantic.

3. Make time to make-time. Plan a romantic rendezvous during the week. You can get a room at a local hotel or plan to have the house all to yourselves. Just the anticipation of being together in this way will add spark to your romantic life.

4. Whenever you can, take the time to give your partner 100% of your attention when they want to talk to you. Put down the remote control or whatever you're reading, face your partner and say "What would you like to talk about?" It will make your partner feel loved and important to you.Before you leave in the morning tell your partner that you are looking forward to seeing them when you return. Never leave the house without acknowledging your partner or saying, "I love you."

5. This one is terribly romantic, so don't try it unless you're ready for a passionate evening. Get your partner two or more roses. Take one of them and pull off the petals. Drop the petals on the floor leading to the bedroom and place several petals on the bed. Put the other roses in a vase on the nightstand. Your partner will never forget your thoughtfulness.

Don't try to do everything on this list in the same weekend, one a month is plenty. These ideas are just a little help to get you started. Once you get going, more ideas will come to you on their own.

Taking the time to create romance in your relationship is paramount to creating a fulfilling love life. Even if you think your ideas are silly, your partner will be thrilled that you took the time to do something loving for them. Remember, it's the thought that counts.

These are the words that were spoken to me from a Nigerian lady that I attended college with. It was hurtful to hear her say this. I have traveled to Zambia twice and the first time was challenging. In a debriefing session I explained to the white people on the trip, that my entire life I had been told that I am African American, and here I was in Africa and had no culture to call my own. When a man in the market realized that I couldn’t speak Bemba he told my Zambian host that I should be ashamed of myself for not knowing my language. He didn’t know that I wasn’t from Zambia, because everything about me along with the rest of the African American community screams Africa. While in Zambia, I noticed how the people looked just like African Americans back home. It was very evident that African Americans are from Africa.

There are two major problems at hand: not enough African Americans acknowledge that they are Africans and not enough Africans acknowledge that African Americans are African. I’m sure growing up we have all heard the “You look like you African” jokes. Well that cruel joke has followed us to adulthood. How can a Black person look like an African, when they are African? And why is that meant to be offensive? I will admit that it wasn’t until after my voyage to the Motherland, that I began to take ownership of my African roots. What’s weird is when I say that I’m African around African Americans that know me, they look at me like I’m crazy and question me. I respond by saying “You’re African too!”

On the other hand I have heard Africans speak like the Nigerian lady who told me that I wasn’t African. Is the history of slavery not enough explanation on how we separated from our homeland? That isn’t American history; it’s African and American history. There are African Americans like myself who have gone through major identity crisis’ and struggled over the fact that we have no knowledge of what country in Africa we came from. Just because we weren’t born in Africa, don’t strip us of our African identity and heritage.

What frustrates me is I can see how the media has played a crucial role in dividing us. In America they have presented Africa to us as the Dark Continent with uncivilized people. To an extent we have believed everything we’ve seen on television. I remember on my first trip to Africa I was scared that some random men were going to break into the house I was staying and rape me. How crazy is that? In Africa they have presented African Americans as all being uneducated, rappers, thugs, and hoes. It was very irritating when the Africans would try to use slang with me. The media alone has caused us to form stereotypes about each other.

This is an issue that frequently comes up in my diverse circle of friends, so I wanted to share it with you guys. I leave you with this question:

The attention ploys are never satisfactory for Chad Ochocinco, I mean Chad Johnson (1), after changing his name and calling himself an employed black man (oh brother!), to getting a reality show, to posting a picture of an ATM in his room on twitter, to Lozada to his half baked white thrash he was cheating on to rumors of him being gay on the Down low etc.. ((why wouldn't the Miami Dolphins be pissed? I'm sure if you were them you'd be fed up with a grown man acting like a baby and making a scene everywhere he went). Ochocinco recently came on tv looking like a wet puppy begging for another round of attention saying - "reality tv ruined my life". Ochocinco Johnson, take it from us, you need help (mental or psychological) helping you figure why you keep ruining your life and why you're never satisfied with attention.. Besides monetization, one of the biggest problems afflicting social networks like Twitter and Facebook is the proliferation of fake accounts. Earlier this month, Facebook revealed that out of its 955 million users, 83 million of them are fake. So, what about Twitter? The social network hasn't revealed any numbers, but a new website aims to answer that question on its own.

Dubbed the Status People Fake Follower Check, the site purports to show you how many fake followers—bots, duplicate accounts, businesses—Twitter users have. All you do is type in a name and you get a percentage. Status People says the site was designed for users with less than 10,000 followers, but claims it should still work for people with crazy followings. People like celebrities.
