New Miike Snow

Been waiting for this for a while now. Set to be released in Spring 2012, we have our first sample of Miike Snow's next album, tentatively titled "Happy to You". The track, "Devil's Work", fits perfect with their debut self-titled album from 2010. And this is far from a bad thing. What's even better, the rabbit with antlers thing is here to stay. The end of 2011 brings up a lot of things. I'll work out until Jan. 20th, and will only eat 2 fried chicken meals during that span. Most will follow a similar pattern, except they won't realize it until the 21st, not sure which route it better really. That being said, posting to the Wax more is also on the list of "to-dos" for 2012. SO I'M STARTING EARLY BECAUSE I'M SO SERIOUS ABOUT IT. This time might stick, too, because I have to submit a "website" to jobs - hope they don't read this....

So without ado, I'm gonna start by with a couple tracks by a new guy on the hip hop scene. A$AP Rocky, recently signed to the tune of $3 Mil, has been praised for his mixtape - LIVELOVEASAP.

The album starts out incredibly with "Palace", calmly predicting the ubiquitous success of such a laid back, drug laced, flow. The following hits include "Peso", "Bass", "Purple Swag", and "Trilla"... All of which will have your brows furrowed and head smoothly bobbing - lands HARD on the ears. So I'm trying to hold on to the promise of more posts/songs. Today I have an awesome artist on deck - SBTRKT, or "subtract", as the acronym substitutes. Hailing from London, SBTRKT has a single, self-titled album out. Awesome stuff, and the whole album is worth a listen. This kind of spacey, electronic R&B is popping up everyone, so expect more of this music to rise the charts. Below are my two favorite songs from the album - "Wildfire", the album's single, and "Trials of the Past", featuring Sampha.

And..... we're back. I know we've probably lost most following at this point but if you're not new to the scene look forward to lots of posts in the near future. For those who are new to the Wax, thanks for stopping by, hopefully you won't have to deal with our spare posting from now on.

Today we have a new rapper that I've been playing non-stop lately. Kendrick Lamar, straight out of L.A. and doing great things. The guy slips it out smooth much like Curren$y, however, he does try and make a bit more social commentary. While that gets in the way of the music every once in a while, it's refreshing to hear purpose in a verse. Below are my favorite two tracks off his incredible album, Section.80.

First is "F*ck Your Ethnicity", a song which the social commentary I talked about does not get in the way. It's the first song off his album, so you'll hear the narrative set up, but don't let the first half minute deter you, great great song here.

Two Kanye Tracks from Graduation

First is "Champion", track 2 and it sets a solid tone for the whole album - or maybe that just sounds good to say. Either way, wait for the bridge that kicks in with "This is the story of a champion..." it's at about the 2 minute mark.

This one is "Everything I Am", real slow but awesome. Gotta love the scratch work for the beat. "Damn, here we go again..."

Big K.R.I.T - Dreamin'

Great song off of Big Krit's new mixtape, The Return of 4eva. Again you'll hear the sampled chorus, something I'm not crazy about but is definitely a viable substitute if budget is of concern - gotta believe it is for Big Krit. Either way a great song with good lyrics, the omission of the sample during the chorus is intriguing as well... maybe it is real? The album artwork (to your right) is reminiscent of his hometown in the south, Mississippi I think. Video is nice too... check it out below:

These guys are back with a new album. And yes, it's still the original crew. Below is a video that's actually a snippet of an entire episode filmed with the same cast. Great song and the video is quite funny. Also check out the album as a whole - the band decided to stream it for free once a leak occurred. The real question is this though: is Elijah Wood actually cool in this? Decide for yourself...

The Weeknd: "House of Balloons - (Glass Table Girls)"

Today we have a pretty strange but very enjoyable R&B/Rap/Electronic fusion of a song by the Weeknd. The song of interest, the title track "House of Balloons - (Glass Table Girls)", is very indicative band's sound. Smooth bridge-like verses, a distorted but consistent beat, spiked with melody and featuring followable rap verses, all of which are littered with party references, the album really does come at you as a whole. To your right is the album cover, and at the bottom of the post is a group shot of the band (you won't expect it after hearing the song). And below it is, so please enjoy the listen - and do remember that it is indeed a long song, so listen to the entire thing if you can, definitely worth the wait.

This song is gonna be at the top of the charts in a couple months for sure...pretty dance-able, ladies are gonna love it, though it's slightly cheesy/mainstream.

This is literally one of hardest, illest bangers I've listened to recently, with rapping over a combination of electronic and dubstep beats. Courtesy one of my buds for hooking me up with this.

Not my favorite by Cudder, but still a solid track. Glad he's putting something out, at least.

So two things of late, for one, the Wax has been slacking. Apologies for that but I've been busy (doing nothing) for the past couple weeks. However, we're back on track on you can expect a fair amount of solid music this week.

Secondly, the songs I've been enjoying lately are below - figured I'd share them and get the week started out right.

The first two are getting old for those who've been around me lately, but for the rest of the Daily Wax audience (which may actually only be those I was just referring too), these should hit the spot. Especially with spring coming... Both are two of my favorite songs from two of my favorite movies - "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield from Pulp Fiction and "Man in Me" by Bob Dylan from The Big Lebowski.

Lastly, we'll give you a more recent song. One is off of Childish Gambino's EP, which we've mentioned before. This one is definitely the best and features an original production, as opposed the arguably gimicky indie beats he's used previously. Download the EP HERE, and listen below. Pretty cool download website by the way, so definitely check it out. His real name, Donald, is used in the url, similar to his "I am Just a Rapper" motif. The song I'm posting, "My Shine", isn't particularly witty (compared to Gambino's other songs, at least, he blows most out of the water), but features a great chorus and holds a lot of momentum. Today I've got something that goes against grain from what we usually throw at you guys...it's a peaceful track by Enigma that was recorded back in 1994. I just saw this music video last night and I must say that I was overly impressed. Production on the music video is phenomenal and it's cool how it backtracks from an old man's life all the way back to when he was a baby throughout the song (which represents the "return to innocence"). Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino

Pretty ridiculous rap here from Childish Gambino, a uniquely underground rapper who is very prominent under his given name, Donald Glover. Glover is a star on NBC's "Community" and was also an Emmy nominated writer for 30 Rock. Or maybe I just made that last part up?

Today, though, we have his latest song, "Freaks and Geeks". Set to an indy beat of sorts (as are most of his songs), the song is littered with pop culture references and incredible plays on words. Enjoy and listen closely...

It's as good as it sounds it would be. Pretty Lights is back to the stuff from his past album (not that many tracks caught fire off his latest album) and the mixing sounds great. The drum effects are particularly nice but I'm not crazy about the more techy scratching and warping sounds you'll notice towards the end. All in all a great track that is definitely worth the download (using the link on this page). Stream it below...

Jay Electronica - Jazzmataz (ft. Tone Treasure)

Jay Electronica is rising quickly in this fresh New York - New Orleans rap scene - "NONY", as some call it. NONY is best known for its sultry smooth beats in contrast to a dark but precise rap tone. Set against a MLK protest of sorts ("I've been to the Mountain Top"), as well as a gospel choir for the chorus, the song is just that. "Jazzmataz" features a very powerful start and build up, but plateaus with Jay's entrance onto the song. Give it a listen and hopefully enjoy, listen below...

Today we have a music video for one of the best (reviewed) songs of 2011 - "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells. I'm a big fan of the song itself, and the video is certainly worth the watch. Lots of weird references so I may miss the bigger picture but it's still very cool and mysterious. The bloody telephone (yes) may be the weirdest but the milkshake spilling is just as ambigouis. Either way, enjoy the song, try and figure out the video, and hopefully you think the lead singer is as intriguing as I do.

3 of the 5 in "Just Begun" - Mos, Talib and DJ Hi-Tek

To those who are at least somewhat interested in the Daily Wax, we're ramping things up again - so get ready for great music, and a lot of it. Today, I'm starting the revamping with a song that fits what we've promoting lately, the "New School" of rap. The song, "Just Begun" is by Reflection Eternal (a rap Duo composed of Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek) but also features three very prominent hip hop stars in the new up and coming game - Mos Def, J. Cole, and Jay Electronica, all of whom we've posted about before. "Just Begun" brings one of the best beats to the table of late, plus the (apparently) coined convo between Talib and DJ Hi-Tek at the began is great - "Tek... do me a favor speed it up a bit".

Give a listen to the slippery-smooth lyrics of this song, "me and Kweli come together like two pieces of metal we magnetizing the ghetto", "Dog I'm on a higher level I'm on top of nosebleeds / ni***s say they're sick but when they rock they don't sneeze", "All about nothing where it's all about the dollar"... just to name a few highlights...
