Intel Corporation Animated Video - a sequel.

A few months back, I created a characters and illustrations for an animated video for Intel Corporation. The purpose of the video was to introduce a new range of touch screen technology to their vendors and other retail stores, such as shoe stores, sporting goods stores and restaurants.

Well, in late April I was asked to work on a second animated feature, which required creating a new main character.

We just wrapped up this past week, after 4-5 weeks of work between myself, a storyboardwriter and animator team in New York. The interim illustrations were shown to a group of Intel executives in a series of meetings, with a number of additions and revisions made. I will post the video soon, but in the meantime, here is a small sampling of scenes and illustrations:

Pat, the new character, owns a large chain of sporting goods stores.
Bob, the main character of the first video is explaining to Pat
how she can use new Intel technology to increase sales
and help customers more efficiently.

This is a retail touch screen station that will be used in sporting goods stores.
The thing is, it does not exist yet. Therefore, I was asked to play
industrial designer to some extent, designing an aluminum checkout station that will
house the various Intel-powered touch screen technologies being introduced.

I just received word from Intel and the ad agency involved that a third animated video will be produced sometime this summer...

Recent work: Drawing Board wrap-up

It was a very hectic month, as evidenced by my lack of posting here. Here's a quick sampling of some of the recent work gracing my board: (Click images to enlarge).

Two of a series of cartoons commissioned by a
Seattle ad agency, for Vertafore Corporation.

Three of a series of seven cartoons created for the British Columbia
Excluded Employees Association. (An agency who represents
all employees in B.C. for benefits, retirement, and training.) I also
worked with them on a character to help people navigate their website,
(a helpful hero of sorts, called "Public Service Girl") Fun stuff.

A step-by-step process for a cartoon created for regular client, CGNet, a pioneer in cloud computing.
I worked with the CEO on this, which was his vision; a busy Rube-Goldberg-like cartoon,
showing how services offered by his firm might otherwise be handled -- in an-old school manner.

1) A first draft with a rocket depicting cloud computing. 2) We decided a hot air balloon better fit the antiquated objects around it, (steam engine, carrier pidgeons, toy train). 3) The character who "built" the set-up was proud of himself and standing in a spotlight...also, the coloring was meant to look old. 4) We removed the spotlight, gave him some tools and then brightened the color scheme.

A political cartoon I was enlisted to create, to accompany a column by
Paul Frieberger, published in the San Francisco Examiner.

head of the Fiorio Hair Salons and School. (Being a guy with simple tastes
in hair care, I wasn't sure who he was until I Googled him for reference photos).

It's shaping up to be a busy summer...Several large projects are in line, including two children's book illustration jobs, along with a humor book about dating which will entail around 35 cartoons, and a third animated video for Intel Corporation.

We'll try to have some fun here in between, with a caption contest or two, as well as some new features...

April Showers

With soft but steady rain drops pitter-pattering on my studio windows, I'm reminded of Annie Lennox crooning the opening of her 80's song for the Eurythmics, "Here Comes the Rain Again".

It's also a fitting metaphor for the activity within the studio right now... a new animated commercial for Intel Corporation, as well as three books to illustrate, and over a dozen other corporate client projects.

I feel very fortunate to be this busy, and after taking a multi-day ski trip a little over a week ago, (first break since Christmas), I'm refreshed and ready to have some fun with it all.

commissioned by the magazine, "Cancer Monthly".

It looks March is arriving like a lion in terms of work, with 14 client projects on the board right now, including some corporate ads and three new book illustration jobs. It could go out much the same way, as I was notified yesterday that Intel Corporation would like to do a sequel commercial/video featuring the character I created last fall.

It may be a little while before I'm here again, but in the meantime, I hope you have a terrific month!

Helicopters, helicopters, everywhere a helicopter

...Or maybe that's just the way it seemed in my studio during January.

This past month brought many new clients, and among them was Erickson Air Crane, a company based in Portland that manufactures large scale helicopters. The gargantuan machines, characterized by an opening just underneath their doors are used for many tasks -- some that I had never would guessed involved a helicopter.

I was commissioned to create roughly 40 helicopter illustrations and a map showing their company's presence around the world. As you might imagine, it involved a lot less humor-writing than usual...and more straight illustration, but it was a great deal of fun.

I received a phone call recently that was a bit of a surprise. In fact it was so surprising that if it had come roughly two months from now, I would have guessed it was an April Fools Day prank.

The caller was a gentleman from Boston who is an executive with a prominent business magazine. He told me that his wife is a ballet dancer by profession and she stumbled upon my blog. He further explained that he and his (at-that-time) fiance liked my 'Dancing Moose' illustration very much, and wondered if I'd mind if she had a tattoo created based upon my illustration. It would be placed in an area where only she and he would see it.) (The mind runs quickly to images of where that might be...but I didn't ask.)

I told him I was flattered to know that he and his wife enjoyed my moose enough to have it reproduced in such a unique manner.

Well, flash forward a few weeks to after their recent honeymoon: She went ahead with it. I later received a photo of the 6 inch tattoo...and here it is, 'in the flesh'.

After a long hiatus from the blog, (lots of work as well as a couple of fairly major holidays), it's time to catch up a bit.

One of the more significant and time-consuming projects that graced my door recently was an animated commercial and video for Intel Corporation. (It wrapped up last month, though I wasn't able to share any art until the commercial and video were released.)

The purpose of the animation is to highlight the new technologies that Intel is introducing; primarily touch screen-based systems in retail stores, restaurants, schools, hospitals and public transportation centers.

I was hired to be part of a creative team, which included a writer and an animator. I was first asked design the characters and background scenes. (This was a competition of sorts with a cartoonist in New York, and don't ask me how, but in the end the folks at Intel chose my characters and artwork.)

The next step was to draw all of the character and scenery illustrations to be used in the animation. Also needed were individual mouth and eye movements for the main characters, to allow them to speak and appear 'alive'. The video ended up running over 6 minutes, which for anyone who is familiar with animation well knows, that was a lot of illustration.

I've seen the finished animation as a video, and although I cannot post it here yet, I think the voice actors did a great job.

It's also an apt description of my schedule since August...non-stop busy with client projects. With the current state of the economy, you'll hear no complaints here -- I feel extremely fortunate.

But after spending time with my family it leaves little to time to blog or draw the 'Boneheaded Dog'. The blitz continues on, leaving me booked up for at least the next month or so, and now turning projects down.

Political cartoon for MoveOn.Org... (Their campaign director called and requested this piece to be drawn for them, after the Eric Cantor-led protest of Hurricane relief funds. The concept was provided, I simply came up with the imagery.)

A 70's style comic book for a long-term client, (a pioneer in cloud computing), for their technology conference...A fun diversion that allowed me to draw in a style that takes me back to comic book-reading days as a kid. Cover, and several illustrated pages inside, with a collection of cartoons, too.

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Steve Jobs would have been an innovator regardless of when he lived.

His early Apple computers were the height of simplicity and aesthetics, all the way back to the final days of glitz and disco. The first Mac, which debuted in 1984, was a step well beyond that, introducing the first computer mouse.

I bought my first Mac shortly after that, and have appreciated them ever since. (Just last month, I bought a new Mac that is over 10,000 times more powerful than that first one.) I've lost count of how many Apple products grace my studio and our household.

Others will have more pertinent comments and greater insights today on the man than I possess, so I won't add more detail...but I thought I'd pause a moment to acknowledge the passing of a great thinker and designer.

July was a crazy month with clients, but I did get to take a 10-day vacation. However, as most self-employed people can attest, vacations often mean working to get ahead, (I left town with my eyes barely able to remain open, needing many late nights to meet deadlines), and then afterward, working long hours to catch up. But as always, it was all well worth it.

We arrived home from our vacation to Kiawah Island, South Carolina, two weeks ago today. It was fabulous; we all had fun at the incredible beach and resort, and and we had a wonderful celebration of my parents' 50th anniversary. My family flew into Charleston, meeting my brother and his family, along with my parents, (all coming from Illinois.) We danced, partied, had a mini replica wedding cake made, and also presented them with a 24" X 36" drawing I created, (a humorous take of their honeymoon at Niagara Falls, surrounded by congratulatory messages from many of their oldest friends.) --All in all, a great time spent with family, and much-needed break.

Now, back to regular life & work. There still remains a great deal of corporate client work and two children's books to illustrate over this coming month.

Here's hoping that you have a fun, safe Holiday weekend. And be careful with those fireworks! (I used to make my own pyrotechnics, but have gone onto being a good dad--and just use the ones from 'over the state line'. Ssshh.)

(And speaking of that subject, it looks like there will be no 4th of July break for lawmakers, while they work on the debt ceiling issue. Poor babies.)

It has been an engrossing few weeks, with a veritable avalanche of client work falling onto the drawing board. (I am feeling very fortunate, I'm having lots of fun, but it's also a little overwhelming.)

-Update, (5/5) was just told that it garnered a brief appearance on NBC's Today Show & Today Show blog.

Well, not that i've been itching to draw him. But a challenge like that is always fun.

A long-term client called last week asking me to create a cartoon & humor page, (Hubspot, Inc., for their news & blog. World Without Twitter Cartoons)

I was asked to come up with several Mad magazine style cartoons on the topic of 'where we would be without Twitter'.

Naturally, getting to have fun drawing Charlie Sheen was the best part. The folks at Hubspot thought the first caricature (below) looked like him, but that he didn't look crazy enough, in the context of his recent statements, media quotes and tweets.

I battled with how to make him seem bizarre and a bit nuts, (you know, like he sounds when he talks). But the trouble was, we decided there was no room for the dialogue I wrote for him.

Then I tried drawing his eyes crossed. Problem solved!

(Maybe the small insect in his hair helps, too.)

Lobster Sculpture

I've been working on a project in my spare time over the past few weeks that was a big step away from my usual two-dimensional drawing world.

A few years back I sculpted some cartoon lobsters for a client on the East coast, as a wedding gift to her fiance. (Playing off the theme that "lobsters mate for life".) At the time, I was not really sure about taking on a project that involved 3D cartoon work...but the client talked me into it. I'm glad she did, as it turned out to be a lot of fun, and the gift to her fiance was apparently a big hit.

Flash-forward to today. The happily married couple now has two kids, and they decided that they wanted me to add some young lobster characters to the original beach scene, now showing the whole lobster family.

It's one of those processes that takes time, as I need to take photos of each step and email them to the client, and then waiting for a response with comments or requests for changes. (Not the quickest way to create a 3D piece of art, but hey, it seems to work in the end.) After adjusting the claws, eyes, antennas on the kid lobsters, everything seems to be coming into shape.

The now growing lobster family, (one 'kid' added at this point).

I started with a Sculpey-like commercial clay that can be fired to become hard. Then to protect it, each clay piece had to be coated with a clear plastic resin, which smells and is hard to get off my hands and any tools I used. I added one 'baby lobster' and then after that looked right to the client, I added a second.

The client is happy, I had fun, and it has been a nice diversion from drawing. The real challenge: packing the whole thing up and shipping it so that it would not be damaged when say, the Fed Ex man drops/throws/kicks it. (I used rubber bands, padding and supports inside the box the first time...and will do the same this time.)

Political cartoons R.I.P.?

Many people say that political cartooning is a dying art form. With newspapers struggling, and nearly two thirds of all full-time political cartoonists losing their positions over the last 15-20 years, it is sadly declining.

At one time I did political cartoons through a syndicate, and before that I self syndicated them to papers in the Midwest...but I stopped doing them about 15 years ago, in favor of newspaper comic strips. Several political cartoonist friends have lost their jobs, all due to "budget cuts". The word is that newspapers generally no longer even have the budgets to pay well for freelance political cartoons. Editors feel that they can get by without a staff cartoonist, and instead, run something from a syndicate for a fraction of the cost.

The good news is that there are many other folks who do pay well for political cartoons. Online news services, political groups and corporate clients are all viable venues for political illustration and cartoons.

I create on average 4-5 political cartoons a month for such clients. Over the last two weeks I was commissioned to do some cartoons on Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, for a client in the financial industry. (Link to cartoon #One, #Two.)

A government agency in Washington DC recently hired me to do a political cartoon on global warming, for their posters and literature. (Interestingly, the tone of the conversation indicated that they feel they are losing the propaganda war on that front. --Maybe for good reason. :)

I have to say it is fun to draw in a B&W ink style that is unmistakably identifiable as editorial art.

Tulip & Iris Cartoons

In January I was approached to do some work for a flower and bulb company in Holland. The company, Breck's is one of those firms that sends packets in the mail inviting you to buy bulbs for your garden.

Previously, they had hired cartoonist Ted Fine, the creator of the "Hazel" comic strip, as well as the Mr. Peabody & Sherman cartoon characters from the Rocky & Bullwinkle show, (characters I used to love as a kid.) Sadly, Ted passed away in 2008 after a long bout with cancer.

The company's main offices in the USA are in Indiana, but a design studio in Pennsylvania that had worked with Ted contacted me and served as my liaison with the company.

The trick of the cartoons is that they are personalized with the name of the addressee appearing in the caption of the cartoon, peering through the envelope window. (A very effective way to increase response rates from direct marketing.) I have done personalized cartoons for many clients, so it was old hat to write concepts for that purpose.

I was asked to create 4 concepts for their bulbs, (tulips or irises), and then after they selected their favorite, to finish it as a color cartoon.

After seeing the concepts, they decided to do two personalized mailers rather than one...and asked me to create a second finished cartoon.

On the Drawing Board

We completed an addition to the house right before Christmas, and I moved back into my studio after it was carpeted, just in time to have things really break loose with work. Timing is everything, right?)

With the beginning of the year brisk and furious, I have not had time to do much except draw, write, eat and sleep, (well, I did manage to ski a few times with Julia, but to me that's classified with eating and sleeping.)

I just sent off the last of some sketches and finished art that were due this afternoon, so I thought I'd take a breather and post a few things here, (including a new caption contest and maybe some new things for fun.)

First, a few of the more entertaining things that were on the board over the last few weeks:

A corporate mascot, (one of several created this month). This one, a rough and tumble little bulldog, was created for a music industry client in California. The second illustration is for their use at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music & film festivals and conferences in Austin, Texas, March 11-20. (Illustration Link)

Packaging artwork for a new product designed to help toddlers wean themselves from using a pacifier. It apparently works quite well and includes a step-by-step mail-in project and a reward, (the child receives a teddy bear after successfully giving up the pacifier.)

The illustration will go on the back of this package.
(I could use one of these, for when I suck on my pencils, etc.)

Currently on the drawing board is art for a new presentation for Bayer Pharmaceuticals, a corporate mascot for a California company, and a cartoon-based contest for Purina, (naturally, it will be a cartoon about a dog; it's in the early stages). Not quite as red hot and hectic as it has been over the last six weeks, but, (like the last bowl of porridge the Little Red Riding Hood tasted), just right. (Did I just mention Little red Riding Hood? I must be tired.)

Holiday greetings

Every year beginning in October, some of my regular corporate clients commission me to create Christmas/Holiday/Winter greeting cards and advertising pieces.

If you took note that I used a general "Christmas/Holiday/Winter"...there is a good reason, as the discussion with those clients often involves how to approach the subject in today's sensitive, politically correct view of things.

As you can imagine, sometimes it's a challenge, especially if those companies have committees or board meetings to decide what corporate message they should send. Committees are the destruction of many a good humor piece, but when it comes to being politically correct, they can make a simple thing very complicated.

I've posted a couple of fairly straightforward Christmas Holiday cards, (one more Christmas-themed than the other), for two long-term clients.

Suffice it to say that not all companies have such willingness to send out 'Christmas' cards. Some want generic Happy Holidays cards...or in some cases, just a humorous winter scene.

This past week, I was also asked by a regular client, (Hubspot Inc, in Cambridge MA), to write and draw a cartoon for their marketing blog, covering the difficulty many firms have determining how to word their Holiday greetings. This line of back and forth with a company has actually happened to me, several times...
