Project Life- Week 4

Sunday: The girls having a tea-party during the 49er/Giants game.

Monday: Self explanatory. Love that text feature in Picasa.

Wednesday: Harper came over during Caravan and we played games, made (and ate) cookies and had a fun time in general.

Thursday: Lily had dance. When I got home Joe had made an awesome ham and scalloped potato dinner. So tasty. After dinner I found this in the living room. Hannah put her baby and the baby's dolly to bed.

Friday: Just some cute kids enjoying movie night.

Saturday: Matthew fell with a coffee cup in his hand and cracked open his head. It was bleeding, he didn't like the ice pack or the pressure but we persevered. In the end we had to bandage it because he kept rubbing it and opening it back up.

These are just a few mini shots from the week that will go into the pockets. Love that!

Time of mourning.

Now that the time of mourning has passed I feel like I can post some pictures of our evening last Sunday.

It was the day of the 49er v Giants.

Dramatic pause.

In case you are living under a rock, the niners lost.

There was almost a shedding of tears.

(Ok, maybe in private there was a tear or two.)

We had some friends over, the family was all dressed up and representing.

We even had tamales.

(In case you were wondering, they were awesome.)

Regardless of the outcome of the game we had a nice evening visiting with our friends, the girls never pass up an opportunity for a tea party and Jake was just excited that Carter came over (even if he was wearing a Vikings jersey). Joe enjoyed watching the game with someone other than me. This is what usually happens when we watch a game together....

Mary: Why do they wear such shiny pants?
Joe: ::silence::

Mary: I don't understand why all they ever do is just jump on top of each other.

Joe: They aren't just jumping on top of each other.

Mary: How much time is left on this game?

Joe: A minute and 36 seconds.

Mary: Ok.

(25 minutes later when the game is still going)
Mary: This is why I don't understand this game, the laws of time don't even apply.

Joe: eyeroll and some kind of extremely patient answer.

Yeah, he was glad to have people that actually knew what was going on here so that he wasn't a loner or needlessly distracted by all of my ridiculous observations.

Project Life- Week 3

Week 3. There are some different little things this week. The pictures may not be clear, they may not be composed perfectly but there is just something about them I love.

1) This one is probably going to end up getting cropped down to fit into one of the journaling spots. I love that my dad is just chilling as we wait for the big kids to get off of the log ride at the Mall of America.

2) Love that it looks like it is in motion. I love that you see us holding hands.

3) A trip into the Peep store got them these "awesome" peep hats. They loved them!

4) This one is cute with Casey and the kids but I love that you can see me and my dad having a conversation in the background.

5) Casey and Jake towards the end of the day. You can see the exhaustion in his little face. Love this sweet little moment.

6) On Monday we headed home. Of course we detoured a little so that we could stop at IKEA. We ate lunch and then proceeded to get our things and hit the road. Love IKEA meals.

7) The sunset on the way home. Yes, I pulled over.

8) We have had a little bit of trouble with the baby removing his diaper and running around naked. Unfortunately he doesn't take off his pants too. He just removes the tabs and lets it fall down one of his pant legs. He could be running commando all day and I would never know unless I find the random diaper, he pees (or poops) all over the place, I pick him up and feel it missing, or the final way to tell is when I see this...

9) I am planning on cutting these apart and putting them in the little slots. I am really enjoying that since I don't always have as much to say to fill those places. We had a snow storm on Thursday that dumped a lot of snow on us. The girls all bundled up and ready for school. Just a little shot of the start of the day.

10) The snowman is actually going into last week. Lily made it the day we got snow and decorated it with some of her winter stuff. We had to remind her to bring in her hat this week since the snow we got on Thursday and Friday buried the snowman. We would be looking for the hat the rest of winter! The picture on the right is from our day at IKEA. They have these nifty little tray carts that I LOVE! I had the regular sized shopping cart that I had Matthew and Hannah corralled in so I didn't have the hands to carry trays. Fortunately they think of everything there. Lily and Jake did a great job pushing it carefully until we found our seats.

Project Life- Week 2

Here we go... week 2.

Sunday: I took pictures outside of the kids with my new lens. They turned out so cute. I love these little faces.

Monday: Christmas is down. Thank goodness!

Tuesday: Lily had her allergy test. All is well, just a few little sensitivities.

Wednesday: The snow... so pretty. This is the first real snow of the season.

Friday: Moms Day at the preschool. We had fun doing all things monkey. :)

Saturday: The 49er game. Hurray!!! We were in Minneapolis so we didn't watch it but we were representing anyway.

Another fun little picture from the trip. Jake was thrilled to have someone to sit and show him what to do on his game. He got lots of pointers from Uncle Johnny! :)

Project Life- Week 1

Sunday- The kids were all passed out by 5:30. Apparently when you stay up until almost midnight you get a little tired.

We went to lunch after church with some friends... Bailey and Lily (they are slightly inseparable).

We have been having ridiculously warm weather recently... the kids have been enjoying their bikes in the driveway. We have been so warm that there are people that are still golfing every day.

Friday- I chaperoned Jacob's field trip to the Grout Museum, Imaginarium, and the Sullivan Brother's Memorial. It was so fun! I really enjoyed all of the things that we learned. I definitely want to take the kids back there.

Saturday- Joe had to go do a hospital visit in Rochester, MN so I took the kids to gymnastics in the morning. It is usually a lesson in patience to take Matthew there but he did really well. Lily was the perfect big sister and let him play with her DS.

Field Trip

I chaperoned Jake's field trip for school today. It was so fun! I have a serious problem with taking pictures of old things. I love them. It was definitely a simpler time....

Love the prescription bottles in the "General Store". There were all kinds of fun labels on the bottles.

Can you imagine putting on those shoes? No wonder they had to have a button hook. Also, Jake thought that lunch pail was pretty cool.

This little sewing machine is awesome. Things have changed so much. I didn't get a picture of the pedal underneath the table to operate it. Reminds me of Bangladesh a little. :)

The high wheel bicycle. Jake wanted to try and ride it. Unfortunately one of these will set you back around ten grand!

The show globe was one of my favorite things. Partly because it is so pretty but also because I love the history. Apparently one of these was displayed in the window if there was a "skilled" pharmacist in the store so that people who couldn't read would know. They would show their skill by turning the water in the globe different, vivid colors. There is also a possibility that in times of mass disease the water was dyed red to warn people that there was disease in the town.

The Maytag-Mason Motor Company was one of the businesses that was established in Waterloo in 1910. The car was beautiful!

These boxes were just cool.

For those of you that are big coffee drinkers. Imagine having this coffee grinder be the only thing you could use for grinding it?

The stereoscope was one of their favorite things to see. All the kids were able to look into it and see the picture of the cars in 3-D. It was really cool!

We walked through the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. You can read more about the Sullivan brothers here. As a direct result of the death of the brothers the US War Department adopted the Sole Survivor policy.

Just a little backstory on the flag below...

The Blue Star Service Banner is a service flag that families with members on active duty can display. When a serviceman or servicewoman dies during military service, regardless of the cause of death, a gold star replaces the blue one. The tradition began in WWI and was widely used during WWII. It was not popular during the Vietnam War. The Sullivan family had a flag with 5 gold stars in their window until the end of WWII.

The trip was great, educational and entertaining. The kids all did really well and enjoyed seeing the constellations in the planetarium as well.
I can't wait to go back with our family and spend a little more time there.

January Joy Dare

I found this today. Apparently I have been living under a rock because I haven't heard anything about this book. While I haven't read it I do think that this "Joy Dare" is an amazing concept. I find so much joy on a day to day basis but have never actually stopped to think about the things that bring me that joy.

I am looking forward to sharing some of the things that I come up with throughout this month.

The basic idea- Snap a photo or record three things a day that you are thankful/grateful for or things that give you joy. There is a printable list (you know how I do!!!) that I am going to put into my home management binder for now. I love a good list of prompts to get the ball rolling!

I have been thinking about going back to the beginning in regards to writing it all down. When I was in college my roommates and I all started to keep journals. We all bought this book from Barnes and Noble and proceeded to write everything into it. I kept it with me all the time. It was about everything. I would add in pictures or things cut out of magazines, doodles, notes from class, movie tickets, expired drivers license, etc. Now that I think about it, it was my version of project life! It was ridiculously fat when I was only halfway through and the binding began to split so I abandoned my documentation of life.

The Joy Dare is something that I could see doing that way again. I love writing on graph paper, I love being able to add in some pictures if I want and being able to just write around it, I love that it is something that I can keep accessible.

Join me! Let's document the joys of life-the expected and the unexpected. With everything going on in our daily lives it is easy to lose sight of the truly important things in life.

Project Life- Week 52

This whole week is kind of a hodge podge of pictures from Sunday, Monday and Saturday. I posted details here and here and here. It was a fun week, lots of family time, a haircut, recovering from bronchitis, friends over for New years Eve... great times!

The pictures from New Years Eve! It was good times. Lots of delish food, the top songs of the past 4 decades, Just Dance on Wii, and the ball dropping. It was fun and the kids made it all the way to 11:45.

One Little Word-Take 3

Hello all!

To recap...

In 2010 I posted this. My word was "nurture". I loved it. I felt like it was the perfect word for where I was then.

In 2011 I posted this. My word was "commit". I wanted it to be an extension of the year before. It flowed perfectly. I feel like I was able to do the things that I wanted to do.

This year, I find myself building off of the word from last year again. I want to just focus a little more on the important things and release myself from others. I want to provide quality instead of quantity. I want to encourage my kids imaginations and do less "stuff".

I want them to know what really matters.

We started this pre-Christmas and I want to continue the trend throughout the coming year.

This year my word is

simplify

I want to simplify everything.

I feel so overwhelmed at times with schedules, events, and commitments.

Overwhelmed by the stuff, the house, the drama, the constant upkeep of the unnecessary.

I want to clear out, manage, and eliminate things that are not precious. Things that are not loved.

I want to focus on the journey. I want to be present and undistracted.

Here is to the new year, 2012! Hopefully this new year will bring amazing experiences and lots of fond memories.

Christmas Morning Part 2

This is the reason that we didn't get a picture of the four kids together. She was tired, crabby and didn't want anything to do with anyone until we started doing dinner and presents.

Happy family. Don't mind the bug eyes or the "I have done something naughty" expression.

This is the best we got!

Quietly waiting for dinner to start. He is so cute! He loves to sit and wait for food. As soon as the table gets set he is in his seat waiting.

Dinner was amazing! We ate homemade tamales, spanish rice, and black beans for dinner. Definitely repeating that one too! It was amazing!

Opening Christmas Eve jammies.

They all looked so cute in their new jammies. After this picture was taken Joe went back to church for the second service and we got the kids to bed after they got some books read to them. The last of the Advent books were read to them by Gramma. We had gotten a little behind these last few days so she caught us all up, ending with The Crippled Lamb.

I really enjoyed the Advent book thing. I am thinking that we will definitely be repeating it next year. Hopefully we will have a few more of our own and less of the library ones.

Josh and Ruthie came to visit for a quick pre-Christmas visit. We had a really great time reading, playing, talking, etc. The kids love seeing them and it makes me really sad that they are going to be moving even farther away.

They brought this game for Jake and it is HYSTERICAL!

There were too many funny moments to count...

This was definitely up there. Lily had to pull her arms into her shirt and run around the house pretending to be a t-rex and growling.

They are so sweet!

Christmas Program(s)

Jake had his Christmas program after church on Sunday (the 18th). After we were all done with that we went to Prince of Peace for the Christmas program there. We had a lot of fun watching the antics of our kids.

They were both great programs. Jake did a great job answering all the questions he was asked during his and they all sang clearly and loudly during the evening one. We are proud of them all!

Project Life- Week 50!!!!!

Here we are. The countdown continues. Week 50!

We went and cut down our tree on Sunday. It was a lot of fun trying to pick one. It started out fairly warmish and then got colder the longer we were out there.
We hustled, Jake chose, we enjoyed cider and cookies, all the kids got to see "Santa". The end.

Monday night we had a Christmas party for the church council. Everyone brought a tasty little treat to share after their meeting so I feel like I have gained a gajillion pounds now. Mmm mmmm good. The kids all played downstairs in the basement and only emerged to get food.

Tuesday brought our normal bedtime chat with Gramma Laurie. I love that she gave us a tour of her Christmas decorations. The kids loved looking for the 5 teddy bear elves. Also, I love our tree!

Wednesday brought a cookie making extravaganza. Bridget and Rachel helped out and we ended up with an obscene amount of cookies. Seriously. Too many for any one family to eat! Fortunately we were sharing them.

Friday brought another fun conversation on Skype. This time it was with the grandparents Lee. Alaska doesn't seem so far away when there are awesome "helpers" like Skype.
Also, we had a bit of medical drama. Matthew (I know, shocker!) fell off of the bunkbed ladder in the girls room. He was crying pretty hard, Joe went in and picked him up, comforted him, cheered him up. He was so happy-laughing even. Then we stood him up and every time he put any weight on his left leg he collapsed onto the floor. Finally, after a little while, he was able to put a little weight on it and was limping all over the place. He was limping on Saturday and then part of Sunday before he finally started to walk like a normal child. (Below is Joe feeling Matthews leg to see if there were any abnormal protrusions, any crying of any kind. There wasn't any of either.)

Saturday was pretty low key. The girls, hanging out . They were just relaxing on the floor.

These are the mini pictures that I am planning on putting into the middle slots where the journaling cards go. The nice part of doing the "low key" way is that I don't feel the pressure to spend a lot of time journaling. Get it done is the motto for the rest of this year!

These are the 5x7 pictures that I am thinking of including into the book in a separate page protector. If I don't include them here I am sure that I will still be able to find some place for them.

2. Dying over the new Project Life designs. Can.not.choose. Clementine. Cobalt. LOVE.
3. I am looking/perusing black boots right now. I need some taller, dressier ones and have been on the hunt. So far, no luck.
4. The 50mm lens for my camera.
5. I would also love an external flash but have done zero research on that front so no link.

My number 1 Christmas gift this year???? A holiday with as little stress as humanly possible. I want to relax, enjoy friends and family, visit and in general, not worry about anything at all. Can I get that under the tree or in my stocking this year? Pretty please?

We (Bridget, Rachael, and myself) got together on Wednesday and baked cookies. Lots of cookies. Lots and lots and lots of cookies.

We did M&M cookies, peanut butter with Hershey kisses, Russian Teacakes, some miserable Snickerdoodles thanks to a mis-measuring moment with the butter, spritz, Vanishing Oatmeal, Sugar Cookies, and Oreo Truffles.

I know.

Lots and lots and lots of cookies.

Deck the halls

We went and picked out our tree on Sunday. It was Jake's turn to choose and he picked a really pretty one -with a little guidance. ;)

After the tree picking extravaganza we went in to pay and discovered free hot cider and cookies, a Santa and a rambunctious golden lab.

It was a great day!

I love the process of picking out a tree, cutting it down, bringing it home, etc. but get kind of frustrated with how flimsy the branches are. I miss the sturdiness of a faker. So many ornaments now are super heavy. The branches are just not strong enough to hold them.

So, we have it. It is decorated. Things are beautiful!

Project Life- Week 49

Here we are...week 49! It is so hard to believe that there are only a few weeks left in this year. This week was kind of low key. We didn't have a whole lot going on.

Sunday- Christmas caroling with the church choir. We went to several nursing homes and a few private residences. The kids loved walking the halls and talking to the residents.

Matthew has learned to drink the milk out of his cereal bowl. I would love it he would a) always finish his cereal before drinking the milk and b) get as much milk down his throat as he gets on the table, floor, chair, clothes, etc.

Literacy night at Lily's school. We had fun going to different classrooms for "sessions" aka playing educational games like Wordo. Also, the dinner of walking tacos and cookies was pretty awesome too. They did a raffle and Lily was the proud recipient of a picture of the East High football team. She immediately offloaded that to Rachael. :)

Painting!! I have been wanting to paint since we moved into this house. We got the kitchen, dining room, and living room done. Still to go... bathroom, master bedroom, and possibly hallway.

I have long lamented the ever revolving menu. It seems like we just keep cycling through the same recipes over and over. I know that we can't be the only ones who have this problem.

So, what is a girl to do? Turn to Pinterest of course!

Buffalo Chicken Tacos

Seriously tasty. We have actually had them twice. Love.

Che Bella Notte Pasta

Same for this one. It is so delish! I personally don't know if you can go wrong with sun-dried tomatoes.

Chicken Tikka Masala

I have to say that the search will continue on this one. It was good but there seemed to be something "off" about the taste. It has great reviews though so I may be a little biased.

Hawaiian Chicken with Coconut Rice

To.die.for. Definitely making this one again!

Hawaiian Haystacks

We had this a few times. It reminds me a lot of the salads and rice that I ate a lot as a teenager. Throw some lettuce on there and you have the signature meal of my Grandpa and Aunt Kathie.

Milkjam

First off, I couldn't find the link this originated from but it is ridiculously easy. Secondly, it is also called caramel. Thirdly, we ate this with peanut butter on bread as kids. Daily. How we don't all weigh 8,000 lbs is beyond me. I love this stuff. Don't be a hater until you give it a try. Slap some on bread with peanut butter and make sure that you have a tall glass of milk. Mmmm mmmm good.

Monster Cake

This cake was the inspiration for Matthew's cake in July. Just thought I would show you how much cuter the original is. I could not get the eyeballs to stay on the sticks. It must be something about cake pops being lighter than the oreo truffles I used.

Project Life- Week 48

Does anyone else do this? I whip out my cell phone and take pictures of recipes in magazines at the doctors office. Surprisingly most of the time I am by myself and no one sees me do it. This time around there was a gentleman in the waiting room with me and he started laughing. Ooops.

Girl Scouts on Tuesday. Lily loves being a Daisy.

Wrapping up books for my book a day til Christmas project. Sadly, I was one short. Got that taken care of now and we are good to go.

Mother of the year... I have two memory cards and misplaced both of them so I had to use the trusty cell phone for pictures of the kids at the Caravan awards ceremony. The pictures are real quality. Not.

Starting the books. The kids are so excited. They have already worked out a rotation for unwrapping them.

Memories! No really. That is what Jake and Hannah call these. They came out of a ball pillow on Jake's bed. They have been the bane of my life since the pillow burst open. I keep finding them all over the place and because they are so teeny tiny they float and stick to everything. EVERYTHING!! I have found them all over the house from being attached to things that get moved around.

We went to Minneapolis on Saturday to drop off the baby stuff for Ruthie and Josh. So excited for them! They are having a baby in June. Sadly they are taking my little niece or nephew away. They are going to be moving to Dallas at the end of this month. We dropped off the stuff, loaded a queen bed that used to be my parents and then headed out to lunch at an Indian place in town. Johnny met us there so we had a great time visiting. After a quick stop at IKEA we hit the road. Sadly, it started snowing and we got really bogged down. We did 27 miles in about an hour and half. It was not fun. We finally made it home in one piece, hours and hours after we should have. A huge thank you to our babysitters for sticking it out and being amazing. We love you guys!
