I was away from home, since he hasn't yet moved his business from where I grew up, to my new hometown... And I was broke.

I remember setting up the interviews upon my return, and the excitement of starting with a new company, one that paid. You see, my dad's business was in a downturn, and he needed help. I was unemployed, so I "donated" some time. There's 3 months of my life I will never get back...

Upon my return, I had lined up my interview. It was time to go shopping. I have a tradition, you see, when I start job hunting. Before going to the first interview, I always go buy some new clothes. They seem to beef up my confidence, giving me a boost of courage that could only be duplicated with a couple of fingers of scotch.

The interview goes beautifully, my potential boss seems to be a fantastic guy, though the one co-worker brought in to help with the interview seems to have some funny notions of what my role will be. I will soon learn that this is not uncommon, and that all his comments are to be filtered for reality...

It's not long until I recieve notification that my initial interview has been impressive, and I'm told a 2nd interview will be scheduled with the CIO. I'm not one to go into things blind, and thankfully, I've made an aquaintance on the inside. I get as much info out of him as I can. "He's russian, so be prepared!" WTF? I've never dealt with a russian before...

Beware the Ruskies

Interview day comes quickly, and I'm nervous as hell. I'm early, the Manager is late, and the Russian is nowhere to be found. Not a good start, and not good for a potential employee with the jitters. We all eventually locate one another, and so begins the interrogation.

The ruskie is a PhD, wears a 3 piece suit, glasses and a full goatee. His english is broken and hard to understand. He seems to be a living caricature of how communist Russia would have protrayed the typical capitalist, minus the monocle...

We dance the dance, he asks pointless questions, I give pointless answers. I get the job on the spot, so lets dicker on price... Yeah, lowballed, as usual. Sucks that I'm broke, I guess I'm going to have to suck it up. Still, it's better than what I was making.

Seems the clothes paid off. Time to call it a day, and get ready for my new job...

Welcome, intrepid visitor...

This is the first post, of what I hope to be many posts, about my experience with datacenter technology and general workplace happenings...

I hope the information contained within the confines of this webspace will both educate and tittilate the masses...

The Sysadmin
