This year's weird October road trip included a visit to Edgar Allan Poe's house and grave, the final resting places of Johnny Eck, sideshow performer and star of Freaks, and Ouija board inventor Elijah Bond, lavender milkshakes at Papermoon Diner, John Waters' favorite bookstore, and oddity shopping at Bazaar.

I keep a list of spooky, autumnal films I love to watch in October. As a Halloween baby, this is my favorite time of year. To mark the season, here's a list of 13 favorites:

The Exorcist (1973)...

It's scary, and disturbing, and even sad, but there are also beautifully shot scenes of Autumn in New York and DC.

Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)...

This movie has one of my favorite trick-or-treating scenes of all time. Margaret O'Brien trying to be the 'most horrible' feels the way Halloween did for me when I was very little.

Over the Garden Wall (2013)...

Like most of my favorite Halloween things, Over the Garden Wall is spooky, beautiful, and a little bit heartbreaking. It has its roots in classics of early animation, as well as 19th century folk music.

The Trouble With Harry (1955)...

It's not spooky, or even scary, but Hitchcock's comedy about burying a body is dark and twisty in its own way, with gorgeous views of Vermont in the fall.

Crimson Peak (2015)...

Guillermo del Toro's Gothic horror romance is visually stunning and emotionally satisfying... and it passes the Bechdel Test.

Frankenweenie (1984)...

Tim Burton takes on James Whale in this black and white classic. As a puppet nerd I enjoyed his stop-motion remake, but for me this will always be the one true Frankenweenie. Also, I want that mug.

E.T. (1982)...

One of the best children's movies ever made, as long as you're not watching the dreadful 2002 digital retread. The Halloween scene is a classic.

The Uninvited (1944)...

An old-fashioned but effective ghost story, written by Dodie Smith, author of The Hundred and One Dalmatians and I Capture the Castle.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)...

Ray Bradbury understood October, and he understood the uncanny. Something Wicked captures a particular period in time, a particular place in childhood, and a very particular time of year. Bradbury's book is well worth a read!

House/Hausu (1977)...

Criterion describes this surreal, silly Japanese horror as "a psychedelic ghost tale.. a stream-of-consciousness bedtime story.. an episode of Scooby-Doo as directed by Mario Bava." Yes.

The Witch (2015)...

The Witch uses a mix of stark realism and fairytale imagery to explore several types of horror: the hardship of life in 17th century New England, fear of the supernatural, and the anxiety surrounding burgeoning female sexuality. Highly recommended.

Suspiria (1977)...

Suspiria is horror master Dario Argento's dreamlike, gory fairy tale about sinister, supernatural goings-on at a German dance academy. It features surreal visuals and an atmospheric score by Italian prog rock band Goblin.

The Company of Wolves (1984)...

Last but not least, Neil Jordan's take on Angela Carter's feminist fairy tales is one of my favorite films. It's a nesting-box of stories, all related in some way to the tale of Little Red Riding Hood.

As much as I like watching traditional Christmas movies, sometimes I'm in the mood for something a little weirder. Presented for your viewing pleasure, one of my favorite unusual holiday offerings:

The BAFTA and Oscar winning Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life (1993) is a strange little mashup of Kafka's Metamorphosis and Frank Capra's holiday classic. Directed by Peter Capaldi (the current Doctor Who), starring Richard E. Grant, and costumed by Monty Python contributor Hazel Pethig, it makes for darkly funny December viewing.

Fantastic Mr Fox (2009)

Because I have two countries, I have the odd privilege of feeling very British on Independence Day and very American on Thanksgiving. I love that Thanksgiving isn't about anything you can buy, simply gratitude and time spent with those you love. Some of my most favorite Thanksgivings were spent far away from the US, cooking and baking and sharing with friends.

Fairy Tales for Halloween

The first scary story I ever heard was read to me on a cassette tape by my grandma when I was three years old. In the story, a Scottish folk tale called "The Hobyahs," the villains are ostensibly the bogeymen of the title. However, I always found the callous, dog-dismembering old man to be much more frightening.

The tale of Mr. Fox shows up in collections of English fairy tales, but has connections to "The Robber Bridegroom," collected by the Grimms, and to Charles Perrault's "Bluebeard." What I love about this story, besides its Gothic imagery, is the heroine's pluck and bravery (described as "high spiritedness" in my print edition).

The great Angela Carter wrote her own take on the Bluebeard story, which can be found in her fantastic short story collection The Bloody Chamber. Neil Jordan later adapted it as a film, The Company of Wolves. Loosely based on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, it's one of my favorites.

I had a few hours free in Toronto this week to fit in some nerdy tourist stops... first to the Bata Shoe Museum, which has a great permanent collection and two brilliant temporary exhibitions (Standing Tall, an exploration of men's heel height and gender identity throughout history, and Fashion Victims, showcasing restrictive, dangerous, poisonous, and flammable clothing and footwear of the Victorian era), then to the Toronto Public Library to see the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation & Fantasy and the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books.

Richard William's 'A Christmas Carol'

In 1970, Richard Williams, known for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Thief and the Cobbler, directed an animated version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol for the American Broadcasting Company. Ken Harris, who worked on a number of Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera cartoons as well as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, served as chief animator. The animation style, aimed at an adult audience, is based on original 19th century engravings for the book by John Leech and Gustave Doré. The resulting film is dark and completely unique. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 1972. Watch it below:

The very first film adaptation of Lewis Carrol's Alice, filmed in 1903. From the British Film Institute:

"Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.

With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years."

Warmer weather came early this year, causing an early bee swarming season. Last week, 15,000 worker bees and their queen swarmed, huddled, and started to build comb and make honey under our eaves. They were industrious neighbors, keeping themselves to themselves. Unfortunately, as they were Africanized honey bees (otherwise known as "killer bees") they could not stay. Africanized bees are wonderful pollinators and make fine honey, but they are also known to swarm, and kill animals and people.

Swarms like this one can't be removed and relocated to a beekeeper's hive as they are capricious, and will often abandon a hive as the mood takes them. Our bees had to be killed by a visiting bee man. A sad day.
