Interim police chief named

GREENSBORO -- Assistant Police Chief Dwight Crotts was named interim Greensboro police chief today. City Manager Rashad Young made the appointment today, according to a press release. Crotts will fill the position left by Chief Tim Bellamy who will retire July 31.

Crotts joined the Greensboro police in 1989 and was named assistant chief in 2007 after serving in several administrative roles.

Crotts is a graduate of Shaw University, UNCG and the FBI National Academy.

His current salary is $87,457.

A national search for a new chief continues.

Census road tour plans Greensboro stop
The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area

The 2010 Census Portrait of American Road Tour is planning a stop in Greensboro on Tuesday.

The event is planned for 2:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday on the upper level of the J. Douglas Galyon Depot, 236 E. Washington St. It is free and open to the public.

Attendees will have the chance to learn about the Census process and find ways to become involved. The event will feature interactive kiosks and promotional giveaways.

City officials say a complete count for Greensboro in the census will ensure appropriate levels of political representation and access to federal funding. More information about Census 2010 and Greensboro is available online at www.greensboro-nc.gov/census.

Leaves and Crime Fall as Winter Settles In

Crime has fallen since September when two burglaries were reported, one at the Lawndale Swim & Tennis Club and one on Kenmore Street. There were no incidents reported during October except for one traffic accident on Normandy Road, and so far no incidents have been reported during November. Hopefully the holiday season will continue to be peaceful and quiet.

Crime Problems in Our Next-Door Neighborhood

There have been articles in the News & Record for the past two days about break-ins in the New Irving Park neighborhood. Fortunately, our neighborhood is not having the same problems.

No crime reports of any kind have been posted for the month of October for the DDLP. We did have two burglaries in September, one on Kenmore and one at the Lawndale Swim & Tennis Club.

The current crime wave in New Irving Park was discussed at the DDLP neighborhood watch meeting on October 7. Officer Jim Cayton, our community resource officer, and Officer Brian Dodd attended that meeting.

Officer Cayton has been working the burglaries in New Irving Park and noted that the burglars are taking advantage of homes with long driveways that curve around to the back of the house and homes with carports because both offer concealment opportunities. The thieves know they have no more than five to ten minutes to get in and out, so they break in quickly, usually by kicking in a door or breaking a window, and grab jewelry and flat screen TVs. In one case, Officer Cayton arrived at the scene of a burglary ONE MINUTE after it was reported and the perpetrator(s) were already gone. One minute.

Officer Cayton reminded us that criminals look for seclusion and easy to sell items and asked us to look around our homes for ways to reduce easy access to entry points and target items. Alarms are a tool that may limit what a thief can take by shortening the time he has in the home. Officer Cayton has an alarm system, but he mainly relies on the alarm to warn him of a break in while he's sleeping. He recommends keeping an inventory of our valuables with photos and appraisals.

Our eyes are more important than any other crime prevention tool. Call the police if you see a car in your neighbor's driveway that doesn't belong there.

Woodstock 1969 - 40th Anniversary

Where were you this week in 1969?
I remember it very well.
I was mesmerized by the pictures from Woodstock in Life magazine.
I was listening to Santana 45rpm recordings.

I've maintained a presence on the internet as a Santana fan for a number of years.

The 2nd annual DDLP National Night Out event is Tuesday evening.
We are looking forward to a large turnout and lots of fun!

Target is our corporate sponsor.
They'll be giving away freebies and other goodies.

They'll be Hot Dogs, Watermelons, Ice Cream and other good eats BUT bring your own food and drinks if you want to have a picnic on something other than hot dogs.

Also, Greensboro Police, Fire Department and other public service members will be at our event.

Annual Copperhead snake sighting/post

Hi Folks, A Canterbury/Kenmore St. neighbor sent over a picture of a recently "retired" Copperhead snake. This sighting is from mid-June so sorry for the late post.

I've got a buddy that's been a Guilford County EMS Tech for 30 years now and here's what he has to say about Copperhead snake bites...*I paraphrase:

"There has been an increase in Copperhead snake sightings this year. But, I have not seen a snake bite on my unit or in the Emergency Departments at the local hospitals this year. 80-90% of Copperhead bites do not inject enough venom to be lethal. I do not know of any EMS services that carry antivenom. If there was antivenom onboard, it would not be a recommended treatment in an emergency situation. It is suggested that if you get bitten by a snake that you try and bag the dead snake and bring it in for examination."

Summer Door-to-Door sales

Well, it's that time of year again...Schools out and kids are looking for summer work.
One way is through Door-to-Door sales.

We had a recent visit in the neighborhood by 2 young men trying to sell home alarm systems.

They looked official with Honeywell corp. polo shirts and APX badges, clipboards and laminated product info sheets.

Turns out that Honeywell makes security systems for a lot of different companies, APX being one of them.

I've been in contact with another blogger and he specializes in researching Door-to-Door Alarm system sales.
He's got some great info about the Honeywell/APX sales tactics and other general info about the industry.

TheDDLP Spring 2009 Neighborhood Watch meeting

We had a great turn out for the Spring 2009 Neighborhood Watch meeting for TheDDLP.

I counted 35 adults.

Officer Cayton and Officer Blaylock were our speakers.

Joan presided over the meeting.

Officer Cayton gave us a crime incident report for the period between February 2009 and May 2009. He and Office Blaylock were very encouraged by the low incident numbers and the fact that we've been calling to report suspicious activity.

Hot Topics for the meeting were:

1. Vandalism - mostly attempts to break into cars

2. Traffic - speeding vehicles (cars and buses) possible actions to take

3. We need donations as we prepare for our 2nd annual National Night Out - details to follow

4. Gang activity - just an update on what's happening in Greensboro

5. Some folks approached me about not getting Blog or Mail List updates. I'm working with them on making sure that they have been added to the Distribution List.

Hester will have a detailed post about the meeting as she was designated as meeting secretary and took notes.

Spring 2009 Neighborhood Watch Yard Sale

On Saturady, April 4th, we had the Neighborhood Watch Yard Sale. Thanks to everyone that donated "treasures" for the sale. We made $107.25 from the sale to go toward the National Neighbors Night Out Get Together in August. Thanks to Mary Speaker for helping. Could not have done it without her. Mary, as Treasurer, is maintaining & accounting for all funds collected & spent for the good of the Neighborhood Watch.

We will start planning the activities for the National Neighbors Night Out in August very soon. Block Captains will be notified of planning meetings & will need volunteer from all streets to help plan & organize this event. Please contact your block captain if you can help.
