Free Halloween Flash Fiction Story ...

WINK!

It all started when she winked at him Jesse was walking down the sidewalk, minding his own business. He glanced up. He had just enough time to raise his eyes from the low-cut dress to her eyes when it happened. She lowered one long, dark lash and winked suggestively. Then he was past, turning to look back, trying to catch a glimpse of her and to figure out what he should do.

In his haste, he walked straight into a lamp pole. He hit it face first, scraping his nose painfully, and all around him the roar of traffic shifted to laughter, then back again before he could clear his vision to see who thought it was funny. He scanned the crowd. A fat man in a baseball cap and overalls smiled And winked.

The man was almost past him before Jesse extricated himself from the pole and turned.

“Hey!” He shouted. “Hey you.”

The fat man didn’t turn. Jesse started after him, but the man turned at the corner and crossed. The light changed, and before Jesse could step out into the street, a bus ground to a halt, less than a foot in front of his face. He blinked.

“Jesus,” he muttered, “Where the hell did that come from?”

He glanced up. The driver held the door open with the long, jointed handle that swiveled. He shook his head. She smiled, winked, and before he could open his mouth, or move, the door swung closed and the bus lurched away from the curb. Jesse reeled back. When the bus had passed, he saw a woman with a baby in a stroller. She saw him staring, and frowned. Jesse looked down and the baby opened one eye very wide, and winked.

He turned away, ready to run, but as he spun he saw them. Old men, young women, girls and boys and bums, and as he met each gaze, they winked. Bold winks, lewd winks, shy winks, fluttering multi-winks. Jesse spun and darted into the crosswalk, not looking back, and not looking ahead. He kept his eyes to the pavement. Brakes squealed. He leaped to the side. A car came to rest inches from him. Just beyond the glass, the driver, a middle-aged, pasty-faced businessman smiled at him — and winked.

Jesse cut his hand on the glass, but it shattered. A moment later the jewel-like bits of safety glass showered his legs and his feet as he reached inside and took the man by the throat.

He saw them through the opposite window, leering, smiling, staring in shock, winking, winking WINKING.

He slammed the man’s head on the steering wheel. Then again, and again. With each pounding stroke, he screamed. At first he was too angry to be coherent, but by the time the police arrived and they dragged him away from the car and the pulpy mess that had once been the driver’s head, they could make it out. Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!

They cuffed him and tossed him into the back of the squad car. Downtown, the booked him. As they walked him back to a holding cell, he passed the visitor’s room. Inside he saw a big, bald man with thick, pale lips and dead eyes. On the near side of the glass, a woman sat, talking into a phone. She hung up and rose. She turned to Jesse, but she didn’t even look up. He stopped, fighting the two officers dragging him along.

“It’s her!” he cried. “God damn it, it’s her! She’s the one who started it. She’s the one who…”

The billy club came down hard on his temple, and the world went black.

When he came to, he was lying on a cot. There was a single bare bulb dangling far over head. He shook his head gently, but even that small motion hurt. Slowly, Jesse sat up, and as his sight cleared, he saw that he wasn’t alone. He slid his gaze up the huge, bulking form of the bald man with the dead eyes. As Jesse tried to press himself back through the brick wall - the big man curled his lip in a near smile — and winked.

For More Free Flash Fiction Goodness from my archive: THE NecronomICON

More Updates: And the Link to the Read-Along Nanowrimo novel

Just a few quick notes.

The contract is in for Trish and I's Stargate Atlantis novel, so the writing will start VERY soon. Have realized our title was actually fitting for the very first proposal shot we sent in - which transformed. Brimstone and Salt may not have any direct connection now...hmmm

More information, backstories, excerpts, etc. are live at http://ennui.macabreink.com - where I am putting up information to help convince you all you must read my new collection, Ennui & Other States of Madness

I actually got paid GOOD MONEY for poetry, which will appear in a Halloween themed poetry antho edited by Al Sarrantonio in the near future. Will wonders never cease?

The link to sign up and read along as I write THE LEDGER is http://nanobook.macabreink.com - you will need to register. Registered users will be able to read PRIVATE posts. The rest of the world will only see the occasional non-private post that I've put up to lure in more readers. The fun starts in November.

My novel VINTAGE SOUL - which also has it's own site, chock full and continuing to grow, dedicated to hints and techniques for writing novels, particularly during Nanowrimo. http://vintagesoul.macabreink.com

And don't forget that most of my posts - thoughts - updates - etc. appear now at: http://www.macabreink.com

See you all over.

DNW

One of those sporadic updates. Nano Novel - Stargate Atlantis..more

Okay, I keep saying I'll remember to put updates here, but my original plan is not a sound one. originally I intended to mirror some of my posts from Macabre Ink here and double my "circulation" but apparently Google frowns on identical content in multiple places, and it's hard enough to improve search rankings without pissng off spiders and bots.

Anyway... Trish and I got final approval on our Stargate Atlantis outline. We'll b egin work on "Brimstone and Salt" when the contracts are finalized and signed...looking forward to it.

I've decided to work on a novel tentatively titled "The Ledger" during Nanowrimo this year. As I have done every year, I'll be having a read-along, but this time it's different. I found the Yahoo e-mail groups very clunky. This time out I created a WordPress blog on my site where readers can register to read private posts. That blog is there only for the read-along group. I'll post the chapters as I write them, each chapter will have it's own set of comments and discussion - thee will be prizes and giveaways, as in previous years. This year the text will be cleaner and better formatted, and the discussions will be open all along, because they aren't going to pop into anyone's e-mail and irritate them.

For those who like the e-mail, of course, there is the rss. feed, which serves that purpose nicely.

My collection, ENNUI & OTHER STATES OF MADNESS is available now. You can order it directly from the publisher or at The Horror Mall The limited and lettered editions will be out soon - and there is still time to register to win the hand-made leather-bound edition and the antique bullseye lantern. 350 plus pages of fiction, and the trade paperback is signed - only $19.95. Ordert today!

Hope to see some of you signed up to read along as I write "The Ledger".

-DNW

Vintage Soul - Nanowrimo - What a Deal I have For you...

So, here's the thing. For severla years I've participated in the Nanowrimo challenge. I've completed it every year, and for the most part, I've sold everything that I've written. That's a lot to be happy about. In honor of this....I created:

http://vintagesoul.macabreink.com

On this site you'll find that Chris Baty and I cooked up a deal. Prior Nanowrimo participants can order my upcoming book (written during Nano) at a ten percent discount. Those who completed the challenge can get 20% off. Every book that sells an additional five percent goes to Nanowrimo's charity drive. There's info on the book, ordering information, and more to come on the site. Drop by!

D

Two articles on Characterization - for the Curious

I've been writing about writing again...over at Macabre Ink my last two posts have been about characters. Specifically, the first covers the subject of consistency - being sure that you create a memorable character, and then remaining TRUE to that character in all his or her interactions and actions throughout the book. The second, posted this morning, is about the arguments I'm having with the voices in my head over a current work in progress, and the many words I've written - and they have erased - as i fight to finish a particular important passage...

-DNW

The Magic of Writers interacting with Writers

Thought you'd all enjoy a post I made today on my website - the new blog (much like this old blog) I'm still trying to figure out what to do...I love Live Journal, but my website is WordPress, and keeping them both up seems silly... (sigh).

Anyway..

I was reading over at Storytellers Unplugged and got all caught up in Brian Hodge’s new essay on - of all things - despair. I’m not going to try and follow in his footsteps or belabor a point, but he got me thinking. There are emotions and experiences that are unique to writers. There are behaviors that when witnessed in a writer are met with shaking heads, or knowing smiles, that would bring suggestions of therapy to most others.

We are obssesive. We are single-minded at times to the point of irritating everyone around us. We are reclusive, and at the same time crave attention. We write for ourselves, and yet we whine if the world doesn’t notice. And the most important point I have to make here? We have to share these experiences with one another.

DNW

The NecronomIcon - because Emoticons need stories too

Wanted to note that over on my website, Macabre Ink I have begun a project. I actually started this on a bulletin board, but to be honest, communities like that just aren't stable...I don't see my site going anywhere in the near future, so I moved my quest in house...

The bulletin board in question had quite a collection of those smiley little critteres we know as Emoticons. I started out sort of jokingly writing short flash fiction pieces about them, in order. I now have (well, I don't know how many I have...more than thirty) such pieces. I have posted ten of them so far ...

You can read along Here - the NecronomIcon

Keep watching daily as I post those already written and try to catch up...I believe there are more than thirty completed...but only ten have been posted so far.

Onward!

DNW

Ennui & Other States of Madness - Promotion - hand-bound book & More!

Ennui & Other States of Madness Promotional Giveaway

Youknow me. I love a good contest. The signature sheets for all threeeditions of the book were signed this morning and will go out intomorrow’s mail. Today I spent most of the day working on thone-of-a-kind hand sewn and bound edition of my upcoming collectionfrom Dark Regions - ENNUI & OTHER STATES OF MADNESS. The book willbe leather bound (such as hand-made by me is) and is sewn and bound byhand. There will be some sketches and hand-written notes and extrasadded when it’s completed…and it will of course be signed and annotatedas a one-and-only edition. This one also includes rough sketchillustrations artist Don Paresi originally did for the project thatwere later removed due to the HUGE size of the book…this is a 360 pagebook.

I have completed the sewing of the signatures, and I have glued themand readied them for attaching to the spine. I will be finishing theboards and spine tomorrow and completing the book. I will have aspecial traycase as well…more on that later. Also included is a veryspecial item that is directly associated with the title story of thebook.

When I wrote ENNUI - which is a story of Jack the RIpper - I wasafter some detail I couldn’t get by normal research. One of the thingsthat I watned to know was just how much light one of the bullseyelanterns carried by London Bobbies in the 1800s gave off…particularlyin fog. I went to eBay, and I bought (not cheaply) such a lantern. It’sabsolutely period and authentic, for all I know it was carried on thestreets during the same time period Jack was running crazy. I can tellyou absolutely…not much light, and in heavy fog (which we also get herenear the dismal swamp) it’s useless.

Anyway..whoever wins the one-of-a-kind edition of Ennui will alsoreceive this antique bullseye lantern. I paid nearly a hundred bucksfor it, but it seems right to let it stay with the story….so here yougo.
These pictures are of the book in progress, and of the lantern. Onlythose who preorder the limited edition of my book are eligible for thecontest. The best price is at THE HORROR MALL where you can save a few bucks.

This is the book block with the marks on the spine to show me where to punch holes…OUCH…I need a real awl for this…

READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE AND SEE PICS OF THE ANTIQUE LANTERN HERE...

-DNW

This year - for me - is almost surreal in quality. I have fourbooks due, stories being published, things being considered for furtherpublications - and I find myself nominated for the Bram Stoker Award inthree categories. It’s a little hard to take in.

This award has been maligned often and loudly, and of course, whenthe nominations came through, I found myself mulling over the reasons. The organization behind the awards, HWA (The Horroror Writer’sAssociation) has had it’s ups and downs - as any organization will. The award process is different from most of the other genre awards, inthat it is recommended by all members and voted on by only “Active”members. It can become quite the popularity contest - but in the end, when the final ballots are cast, somehow it seems to level off.

Read The Rest of the Post at Macabre Ink

-DNW

The Not Quite Right Revrend Cletus J. Diggs - Nearly sold out!

First I’d like to thank any and all of you who bought ‘The Not Quite Right Reverend Cletus J. Diggs & The Currently Accepted Habits of Nature” already. It’s been #1 on the bestseller list at the HORROR MALL since it was announced, and that is an interactive system. It automatically updates in response to sales, so I know people are still buying, and I appreciated it. If the book intrigues you at all…you’d better jump quick. The book is an old school limited edition - 100 copies with some cool bells and whistles…a lettered edition with MORE bells and whistles (more on that in a minute) and a LOYALTY edition (of which only 7 will be issued). There is also the one-of-a-kind CAIMAN edition - you have to pre-order to be entered into the contest for that one…comes with a stand manufactured using an authentic alligator paw and deer horns straight out of The Great Dismal Swamp. Like before, you can preorder this book at the Horror Mall by clicking on the book cover. They never charge until your book is ready to ship - and they have lay-a-way!

Anyway… here is the breakdown of the coolness available in each edition. They will all be signed … a remarque - for those who don’t know - is a small, original sketch drawn for each book by the artist (in this case, Zach McCain)

Limited

Bonded Leather, Hardcover w/dustjacket. (Will ship in Brodart archival cover)

Dripping with art. Zach McCain has provided five full page black and white illustrations as well as unique art for the foil stamp, signature page and art for the chapter headings.

Introduction by Bram Stoker Award-Winning author Elizabeth Massie.

Lettered

Even more delicious art. There are two full page color illustrations in this one.

Evolution of a Critter Book. A photo essay detailing the evolution of the Caiman Edition.

The Name Story. Bad Moon has a reputation for delivering great stories featuring the names of our lettered buyers. David has some great ideas and I expect to have it soon. This story WILL NOT appear in the Loyalty Edition. We treasure the loyalty of our lettered buyers and wanted to make sure they always have something unique and special.

Frontispiece of cover art.

Unique signature page.

Introduction by Bram Stoker Award-Winning author Elizabeth Massie.

Loyalty

Additional Full page color illustration by Zach McCain.

Expunged material from the manuscript.

Essay on life in the south ‘by Cletus’.

Black and White illustration David Niall Wilson.

Black and White illustration by Elizabeth Massie

Remarqued by artist Zach McCain.

Unique signature page.

Different leather color.

Introduction by Bram Stoker Award-Winning author Elizabeth Massie.

NAME STORY:

I have never done one of these before. It’s a new thing for me to have a story that REQUIRES twenty-six names, and not to even know what those names are ahead of time. I’ve started the story. It is a Cletus J. Diggs story…only the second ever, and it will only appear in the lettered edition of this book. I’m having a lot of fun with it.

ESSAY: I convinced Cletus to pen an essay about life near Old Mill, NC. Not surprisingly, a lot of what he has to say sounds very familiar to me … here’s a teaser…the first paragraph:

“Near Old Mill, North Carolina, there are roads signs every few miles that read Dead End. They aren’t even numbered. All of them are dead ends, of course, but they lead off into fields, wind around corners, and stop. People live on those roads. Ruined farms loom in the shadows of the trees. Makes you wonder how they ever got mail. For miles around you can smell the scent of the swamp, riding on the cotton dust and pollen. From time to time you see a shack or a trailer so fallen down and rotten looking it seems like the Earth has opened up to swallow it. Outside, you’ll see a pickup truck and a line with laundry drying in the sun.”

– Cletus Jehosephat Diggs

A final note…it would be wonderful if some ladies bought the lettered edition. Why, you might ask? I’ll tell you. It’s hard to write a story with twenty-six characters and none of them are women, you know? Unless you want Brian to be Brianna and Andrew to become androgynous… help a fella out?

Next entry will cover the Bram Stoker Awards in the categories I’ve been nominated in. I was perusing the lists of past winters, and it was sobering to think I might actually become part of one of those lists before the week is out…a bit humbling too.

Until then…

-DNW

Maria Alexander Interviewed at Macabre Ink...check it out!

In conjunction with my review of their joint collection, SINS OF THE SIRENS, I've decided to conduct a mini series of Sins of the Sirens interviews with the ladies behind the words. To start it off, I have interviewed Maria Alexander ladyeuthanasia today over at MACABRE INK - go and check it out. In the days to come look for interviews with Loren Rhoads morbidloren, Mehitobel Wilson mehitobel and Christa Faust faustfatale - fascinating ladies with a lot of talent and some interesting things to share.

David

New Book Review at Macabre Ink...

I just finished a pretty in-depth review of the collection SINS OF THE SIRENS - which is a compilation of fiction from authors Loren Rhoads morbidloren - Maria Alexander ladyeuthanasia - Mehitobel Wilson mehitobel and Christa Faust faustfatale . This is intense, erotically charged fiction at its finest. Go - read the review!
Writing honest fiction - Are We Our Characters? John Skipp's Challenge

Over at Storytellers Unplugged John Skipp wrote an essay about letting honesty show through our words. Well, to be honest, first he used someone else's words to tell it, and then in the comments section he did it himself. He also challenged people to write something in a brutal honest fashion. I didn't do that exactly...I wrote ABOUT writing in an honest fashion in an honest fashion...

You can read that post AT MACABRE INK

-DNW
