"When we first started touring, we would open with To Know Everything Is at every show. The drums would abruptly announce themselves & then the guitar & voice would come in like a call to arms. It seemed appropriate to immediately lay it all out on the table for unsuspecting audiences. Thematically the lyrics & tone of the song are a summary of everything we do.

As time went on & we finished some of the songs that would populate Oraoneiroi, we started to experiment with other introductory songs. With To Know Everything Is falling in the middle of the set, I started to segue way out of the preceding song by playing the first chords in a slow picking manner. This sparked the idea to rearrange the entire song in this manner.

In the end, I decided that we should try to record it the last day we were in our studio. It added a bit of spontaneity to the proceedings, while forcing me to finish it in a timely manner. It's not perfect, but it definitely served a purpose.This version captures the conflict that surrounded it's recording & the struggle to find a light in the creative darkness I'd felt we were getting lost in."

"Going through some files last week, I found a whole mess of guitar tracks I recorded over the summer for this song. I had planned on rerecording the guitar tracks & adding new vocal tracks, but I never got around to finishing it. Reviewing what had been abandoned. I discovered that it was about as close to being finished as it could be & it really just needed a bit of polishing.

After rifling through the pieces I had unearthed, I decided to add some keyboard loops & noise to fill the mix out a bit. When we recorded the first mix in May I was unsure about adding bass to the song, but after listening to it again it seemed to need some sort of low end. The guitars weren't giving the song enough presence on their own. The Slow Version had a sense of openness to the mix, but this one needed to be a bit denser.

While tracking guitars, I'd managed to throw in a couple weird noise samples as well. It was surprising to see how much time has been spent recording guitars & rearranging the instruments. Luckily all of that work that fateful summer evening wasn't for naught. It did feel strange working on a third version of a song that's now over two years old, but maybe it isn't so bad to retrace your steps. Now there's more room to get a running start for the proverbial leap forward."

"The song To Know Everything Is was originally written in 2008 & released as the first song on Reductio Ad Absurdum. On tour I started playing a slower picked version of the first chords as a transition from whatever song preceded it. I took a liking to the way the chords sounded when played this way & kicked around the idea of working out an alternate arrangement of the song. Finding the time to actually track it was another matter altogether.

Recording a reworked version of an old song naturally kept getting put on the backburner as we had a variety of other pressing matters. Fittingly, I decided the night before we moved out of our studio was the perfect time to attempt to record the new arrangement. We also were leaving for tour a week later, so this was the ideal time to try & record a new song. I got most of the guitars worked out the night before & then we tried to layer some shaker & toms over the guitars the next day.. At some point vocals were also recorded, but it was a bit of a blur since we were literally emptying out the studio while this was happening. We would record a tom & then quickly pack it up & move it out.

The song was hastily mixed as the studio began to look like we'd never been there at all. It became a strange epitaph to our time in that studio. The artwork is a colour reversed version of the original artwork for Reductio Ad Absurdum. A not entirely subtle way of representing the inversion of the sound of the original recording. Whereas Reductio Ad Absurdum represented the transition that lead to Oraoneiroi this song represents what may end up being more of a left turn. I guess we'll have to see what develops in it's wake."

To Know Everything Is There's a new mix of the Slow Version of the song To Know Everything Is in town & word on the street is that it's a Crazy Mix. Word is that it's at least 46% crazier than the mix that we released in June, but that may be up to you to decide. I started recording additional guitar parts for it over the summer (End of July, maybe August, who can really say) because I wasn't satisfied w/ the fidelity of the mix from June. Then I forgot all about it until yesterday.

The June version of the mix was a bit rushed. I had the bright idea to start recording it the night before we moved out of our rehearsal studio. I was literally mixing it in the midst of us moving all of our equipment & assorted crap out of the studio. This new & improved Crazy Mix has all sorts of additional guitar parts layered on top & I added some keyboard samples to the underbelly of the mix. Let me know what you think.

Anyways, we're going to start playing shows again soon & we may even try to tour in the Spring or Summer. Keep an eye out for more new music to slowly trickle out in the next couple months. We'll see you soon!

"Choir Croak Out Them Goodies" Review of "ORAONEIROI"

"Oraoneiroi came out last August, and the Deepsea Goes have got a show coming up tomorrow night at Pehrspace. Hurrah!

They sound nothing like their claimed influences – you'd be hard-pressed to find any My Bloody Valentine in there, though if all other reviews written are going off the band's Blogger-listed interests, I suppose it should be noted that one would be hard-pressed to pick up on the vibe of Dirty Dancing, as well. There's a good lot of sloppy vocal thrash in the ultra-masculine style of Matt Korvette (Pissed Jeans), particularly on tracks like “There is No Space,” and some sloppy, thrashed-up guitar on tracks like “There is No Elevator.” Actually, come to think of it, there's some sloppy, thrashed-up guitar all throughout. How nice, for consistency's sake.

Their lyrics aren't poetry much, but what holds them together well is their minimalism; this brother-sister duo are a vicious pair, and things really pick up on this record at “There is No Home,” balls-out punk rock, though “There is No Stop” is a highlight for its constant crash and – among the rubble of feedback – conscious melody, which disappears into a wall of noise and then transitions back in by the album's next track. That same guitar keeps barreling through during “There is No Start,” but “There is No Light,” a mere track forward, is pure sludge. They're not missing a damn thing. Good stuff for fans of Pissed Jeans and the A Frames (yum, the noisy side of Sub Pop!).

Having formed in early 2007, The Deepsea Goes has been a very fruitful group regarding releases and touring. Even having never heard of the disjointed noise-based group until their latest, and second full length, Oraoneiroi (which is either release number five or eight, depending on what’s being counted), it’s easy to tell that The Deepsea Goes is full of ambition and hold a different vision than most of today’s alternative and indie acts.

The band’s myspace describes their sound as a combination of hard rockers Motorhead and 90’s shoegaze pioneers My Bloody Valentine. I’m not really sure weather the band is serious or not – because really, there couldn’t be a less accurate description of the band’s sound. But if by chance the band means that they draw their ideas from every type of tempo, beat, intensity, and genre, then I’m inclined to say their description is bang on. It’s as if every sort of alternative, indie, and punk was thrown together in a blender, set on high, and by some miraculous chance emerged a satisfying result.

Oraoneiroi’s beauty is that nearly every track feels raw, unhinged, and downright chaotic, while still presenting a deep and thought-provoking product. In other words, while the overpowering fuzz, sporadic chord changes and jumbled screams on tracks like “There Is No Weight” and “There Is No Death” might at first seem crude, given a deeper listen a bigger picture reveals itself, and before long you suddenly realize that The Deepsea Goes has penetrated your mind –the initial madness becoming natural; even appealing. Think of it like one of those magic eye puzzles. Once your brain clicks in to the artist’s vision you’re never quite able see the pieces individually again.

Further enhancing Oraoneiroi, the band crams their ever-developing soundscape to the brim with continually evolving emotional undertones. The bouncy guitars on “There Is No Space” provide a curiously uplifting effect, but eventually erode into dark intrigue and wonder. Others like “There Is No End” feel like the end of the world is fast approaching, and others like “There Is No Light” communicate a daunting aura. Again, it’s as if everything is always present at the same time, but illuminated at certain moments during certain tracks. Such complexity makes it challenging to focus in on any one moment without overlooking the myriad of other background intricacies taking place in parallel.

The Seepsea Goes isn’t the first band to embrace and build a sound around chaos, but they are one of the best examples in recent memory because of their knack for avoiding convention without coming across as an inapproachable, elitist mess. You can stream the album on the band’s website, so if you don’t mind leaving convention and structure behind, bring an open mind and give Oraoneiroi a listen."

LA Record Review of "ORAONEIROI"

Rock musicians in the late '90s were preoccupied with making a soundtrack to the rapture that was surely right around the corner. But a decade or so later, we seem hell-bent on erasing the memory of that millennial fear--our faux-disco anthems merely celebrating the postponement of our annihilation, our cloying ballads dwelling on the melodrama of teenage lovers. So it's particularly refreshing to hear the Deepsea Goes' Oraoneiroi, a brash and belligerent reminder that times are as tense now--if not more so--then they were when Y2K loomed. This is music for burning buildings to the ground, smashing police car windows, and attacking anyone in sight. The eleven-track album is relentless. Melody takes a backseat to the visceral power and unhinged intensity of the two-piece, who could frighten the most hardcore of hardcore bands with their thunderous charge. Each song title begins with "There is No..." just in case the abrasiveness of their sound didn't fully convey the fatalism."

"I want to hear The Deepsea Goes play Oraoneiroi—which is more like a single long performance than an album of distinct songs—in a basement crowded with people ducking light fixtures and low-slung plumbing to stand in a semicircle around the band and stare angrily at their shoes while shaking their heads ever so slightly, thus showing immense appreciation.

Eight reasons I have a crush on The Deepsea Goes: 1. There are only two people in this band, a he and a she. 2. On Oraoneiroi, ~~Paul White~~'s vocals sound semi-buried, and when he sings, as he does on "There Is No Up," he inflects like Ian Curtis (who was a rock and roll god). Usually he shouts, and sounds more California hardcore, which is okay too. 3. I have no idea what he is saying, ever. 4. His sister, ~~Janine~~, makes full use of her drum kit. 5. They used to tour in a Toyota Corolla but it broke down. 6. They live in L.A. (Who does that?) 7. They like Greek mythology, or at least they like Greek words. 8. They make noise, and it is heavy, but also spare. On "There is No Stop," the noise is especially pretty for two minutes and nine seconds."
