Episode 146 – The Grassroots Avengers and Other Avengers

I really did have an entirely different set of notes for the first half of Episode 146, but tossed them all out the window when I learned that the Tea Parties had knocked off perma-Senator Dick Lugar. You may not know who Lugar is nor why it’s a big deal that after January, he won’t be drawing a paycheck from the taxpayers anymore, but after you listen to the show this week, you’ll know everything you need to mount your own voter rebellion against the professional politicians who have come to believe that they and not we are in charge.

I slipped into my Pure Geek outfit for the second half. I really like that particular outfit — I am a geek by birth and upbringing — and it’s nice to get away from politics for a few minutes and talk about the fun parts of life. So, you’ll get some Avengers talk, an early review of my new iPhone, and some hockey love just in time for the second round of the playoffs. Note that the show was recorded before My Beloved Capitals bowed out, so there will be less pain and far more optimism in my voice than you’d expect.

I also co-hosted Strictly Right last week with Ben Swenson. Andrew Lawton, man about town, was down for the day, and I was glad to jump in and help out. Take a listen!

Episode 145 – The Fast, the Furious, the Felonious, and the Feast

If you rounded up all the people who have done more than desultory reporting on the Fast and Furious scandal, you could get them all in the banquet room of the average Old Country Buffet and still have plenty of space left over. I was fortunate enough to have one of those few, journalist for the Big Journalism site Mary Chastain, on Episode 145. We talked about the newest developments in the ongoing story — the word “contempt” came up a time or two — and kicked around a couple ideas we had for why this hasn’t been reported as widely or loudly as, say, Iran-Contra.

In the second half, I talked about the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and why I believe this year ought to be the last year it is held. We desperately need independent journalists and I’m not quite sure how that happens when, once a year, they gather among the celebrities and politicians on whom they are support to report and perform like a bunch of 12 year-old girls backstage at a Justin Bieber concert. I wasn’t explicitly political — this happens during Republican administrations as well as Democratic — but there are some obvious political considerations. How, exactly, do you “afflict the comfortable” when you are yourself one of the comfortable?

Episode 144 – Barack Obama’s Oil Con and the Dog He Ate

Episode 144, otherwise known as The Week of the Bungled Blurb, is all about oil and deception. And sock puppets. And dog-eating.

Hey, did you know President Obama ate a dog? He did. He proclaimed it “tough”, unlike most people who would proclaim it “OH MY GOD!! EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW EW!! GET ME SOMETHING TO DRINK! WHAT ARE YOU, INSANE? WHY DID YOU JUST FEED ME DOG???”.

After that, I talked a bit about my time at Blog Con and a couple conversations I had about community and why it’s vital that conservatives build communities around things that have nothing at all to do with politics. I think in the past couple of years, we on the right have crept a bit closer to embracing the arts (especially music and movies) as important to what we’re doing politically. Very few people can survive on politics alone and I think it’s critical for us to build places where people can form their own communities around interests that aren’t political so that when they do want to get involved, they have a group of like-minded friends around them to help.

Episode 143 – The Scorn from WaPo and Music with Mark

The big lie most often told by the MSM is that they know better than you what is and is not news. Every day, though, you can find an example of just how untrue that assertion really is. I kick off Episode 143 with a tale of funny Obamacare math, a newspaper article that got demoted from the front page, and the ombudsman who just doesn’t get that he’s no longer our gatekeeper.

As you may already know, I’m an amateur musician myself and music has always been an important part of my life. I love to talk with musicians about music — why they do what they do and how they get from tune in their heads to tune in our ears. Mark Scudder is a very talented guy who is making an entire album from scratch, right out in the open so you can see and hear what he’s doing. It’s an interesting approach and I’ve been following the project for about a month now. He came on for the second half to talk about his project and about what it’s like to create music without a big studio and with a pretty small budget. I’ve been impressed with his results. You may just be as well.

Episode 142 – The Crap Sandwich Redux, Mad Men, and New Live Digs!

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten as intense a reaction I got from last week’s show, not just from the FTR chatroom (which is always wonderfully raucous) but also from folks on Twitter. If those are typical of what the average engaged Republican voter is thinking right now, then the GOP is in for a very big surprise after Election Day. I touched on some of that in Episode 142, plus the interesting fable told by Jay Carney, one of the more accomplished liars I’ve ever seen in politics.

Also, for you puckheads, I dished on how I see the first round of the NHL Playoffs ending. Thus far, I’m sad to say, my predictions are a bit…less than prescient, but it was a quick five minutes and it felt good to do some fast sports talk. Actually, the entire first half seemed to zip by. I had a lot of ground to cover and only a half hour in which to cover everything, so if I sound a bit like Joe Isuzu, forgive me.

Ed Driscoll stopped by for a second half chat about the new season of Mad Men and the state of television today. Ed is, as I’ve said, one of the smartest men I know when it comes to television and movies. He could, I think, teach a class in either subject pretty ably. I did manage to work in a reference to one of my favorite shows toward the end. You’ll have to stick with it to find out what that is, though faithful listeners might have a good idea already.

I delayed this show post until today so I could include a special and important announcement. We have thrown off the shackles of UStream and will move the live show, as of this week, to a brand new platform. SMPMike and several faithful listeners helped me test our the Livestream site last Friday and I’m pleased to say it worked very well. You shouldn’t have the annoying mid-show ads that fill up your window nor should you see the connection problems that were a constant frustration for many of us. So, starting tonight, the new link to the live show is right here. Note that you’ll have to endure one ad when you first sign on, but after that, you’ll just get banner ads, which is tolerable. Later in the year, SMPMike and I will look at upgrading to the Premium service, so even those ads will go away. That assumes that we build a reliable income stream for the show. More on that later, though.

Episode 141 – Of Crap Sandwiches and Grand Bargains

I slept on posting Episode 141 because, well, forgetfulness is a nasty thing, isn’t it? Honestly, I thought I had written the post on Thursday night, only to realize yesterday that it was some other post I had written and not the show post.

I really need some sort of work-flow tool or a checklist or a comely Personal Assistant who also knows how to mix a good martini.

What I need more than that, though, is a Republican Party that understands that it’s only useful when it is a brightly-contrasting counterpoint to the big-government, overspending, totalitarian-leaning Democratic Party. I’m not going to get that this election, so I’ve offered the GOP a deal. Call it a compromise, if you like because “compromise” sounds so much nicer than “one last chance for them to redeem themselves”. The show got a bit ranty, especially in the second half, but it needed to be that way. These days, the only way to get the attention of our political parties is to use the rhetorical equivalent of a 2×4 and that’s what I brought. Listen. Comment. Share with your friends!

Episode 140 – The War on Women is Real, but Not Spectacular

What happens when the podcasting life hands you lemons? As I showed in Episode 140, you go to your live chatroom audience and make a delicious Delivery drink! As you’ll hear, there was a bit of a scheduling snafu that caused me to quickly improvise the entire second half. Luckily, the folks in the chatroom came through like gangbusters (and, surprisngly, didn’t bust my chops too badly!) and what could have been a disaster turned into one of the more enjoyable segments I’ve done on The Delivery!

Don’t be in a hurry to get to the second half, though. Teri Christoph, who you will know if you are a regular listener (and why aren’t you??), joined me for the first half to talk about her newest venture ShePAC and the “War on Women”. She and her cohorts have begun a brilliant work to push back against the talking point that conservatives hate women and progressives are their stalwart defenders by pointing out the noxious and vicious attacks on conservative women by giants of the Democratic Party. Their first exhibit is Bill Maher, who just dumped a million dollars into the President’s re-election coffers.

Episode 139 – All Right, You Primitive Screwheads, Listen to Obama!

Does it bother you when people treat you like you are a drooling idiot, like you are Tim Curry right before he jumps out the hotel window in The Shadow? If so, Episode 139 should get you good and riled up. See, the Obama administration believes it’s packed full of the biggest brains in the Democratic Party (and for all we know, it is) and the accumulated genius gives them the unquestionable right to run your life. In the first half, I’ll give you some True Tales of Democratic Genius and introduce you to the only federal budget anyone has proposed in a year.

If you’ve not gotten in on FTR Radio’s Marx Madness, then you’re missing out on a ton of fun. It’s probably not good business to tell you all to listen to another podcast, but you do need to tune in to The Snark Factor (either live at FTR Radio weeknights at 10 PM or via iTunes). What they’re doing is a ton of fun, and you can get a taste of it (along with a little scoop!) in my second half interview with Fingers Malloy. Fingers is also one of the most entertaining guys I know and the segment was a ton of fun.

Episode 138 – Obama’s Progressive Theory of Everything

It is an act of rank journalistic malfeasance that most of America had not heard of Derrick Bell, the father of one of the most noxious racist philosophies ever created, before last week. I did the job in Episode 138 the MSM still refuses to do, but I did a bit more than that. Bell’s belief that America is irredeemably flawed and must be torn down and remade is the foundation of almost everything the Obama administration has done. It even explains why the President is hell-bent on high gas prices, even in an election year. The thing is, this isn’t magic. Any of the news networks could work this stuff out and put it in a 30 minute show. Any newspaper could write a mid-length article about it. They don’t because they want the same thing that Barack Obama and Derrick Bell want: a “fundamental change” of the America that is to Progressive American Paradise. This is war, and I’ll tell you the left-wing battle plan, in plan calm English. Take notes.

Most of you already know that I’ve signed on with Michelle Malkin’s newest project Twitchy.com. In the second half, I explain what it is, how I came to be involved in it, and why you should visit the site so often that all the site meters explode and the web masters run around tearing out their hair in apocalyptic despair. I also talk about one of my favorite subjects — social media — and add a codicil to my Two Rules of Social Media. You do remember the rules, right? Well, if you’ve forgotten, I’ll get you up to speed.

One last thing. Next week, I’ll have THE Fingers Malloy on the show. Fingers is a friend, a brilliant funny guy, and one of the best natural radio/podcast talents I’ve ever met. It’s going to be fun.

Episode 137 – A Bit Shouty Then a Little Bit Sad

If you don’t like it when I yell, you’ll probably want to skip past the first half of Episode 137. I waded into the Sandra Fluke Slutroversy and didn’t have a lot of fluffy-bunny-and-unicorns things to say about it. The entire controversy rests on a pile of falsehoods stacked up by Democrats who care a lot more about power than they do about women and the fecklessness of Republicans who curl up in the fetal position any time a Democrat glances at them in an aggressive fashion. In the middle is Rush Limbaugh, a man I respect greatly who has earned far more respect from conservatives than he’s gotten the past couple of weeks. As usual, I was — am — more disappointed by the ninnies on the right than I am the predictable dishonesty of the left.

In the second half, I talked about Andrew Breitbart and how he all but took conservative new media on his shoulders and carried up a great distance up the Mountain of Mainstream Respectability. I know it’d odd to see “respectability” in the same sentence as “Breitbart”, especially since he seemed to care so little about how the mainstream media, mainstream culture, or mainstream Republicans saw him, but it’s true. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of people in conservative new media today who would not be where they are if not for Andrew Breitbart’s ambition and generosity. Thanks to the work he did, and how he went about his work, we in new media have access to places and people we did not have before he hit the scene. For that, I can not thank him nearly enough.
