How and When Did You Discover SeamlessWeb? Oh, well it’s got to be about 3 or 4 years ago now. I was working at a previous job and one of the executive assistants clued me into SW when we were working late. I was starving and refused to give in to the contents of the vending machine. Lifesaver! I hope she was promoted.

Where Do You Use SW? At work, for sure. On busy days there’s just no time for a lunch break I’m sad to say. I can get some grub plus miss the lines during the lunchtime rush.

Favorite Kind of Food: Mexican, hands down.

In the Past Year, What’s the Latest You’ve Stayed Up and Why? That’s a loaded question. Too early, and I sound boring. Too late and I sound irresponsible. So, I’ll say this – the latest I stayed up this past year was actually all night long! I had a migraine.

The Order:

In the mood for Latin cuisine, my eclectic palate led me to El Viejo Yayo Restaurant in Park Slope. If you’ve been reading my reviews, you’re well aware of my ordering habits by now. I generally select a traditional appetizer, reflective of the country and cuisine of the week, then an entrée, and a beverage. This week I decided to go with a salad, entrée, side dish, AND beverage. My choices? Avocado salad, Stew Chicken with Rice and Peas, Fried Green Plantains and Tamarind Juice.

The Meal:

Each item was separately packaged, so I picked up my meal, took it home and began to dig in. I scooped out a generous portion of rice and peas, mounted it on a large plate and surrounded it with green plantains. I added the stew chicken on top. The stew chicken was succulent and so tender, the heavily marinated white meat delicately slipped off the bone each time my fork picked up a medium, bite sized morsel. The chef added a few pieces of potato and thinly sliced carrots for flavor.

The rice and peas were reddish brown and seasoned with what I believe to be sazon. I tried both the chicken and rice by itself, then together, before picking up a few plantains and mixing them with the dish. The combination was heavenly and filling.

Avocado Madness

I was a bit surprised by both the avocado salad and the tamarind juice. Half a sliced avocado sat in the middle of a large bed of mixed greens and a few slices of tomato. The salad was topped with thinly sliced red onions. I ordered oil and vinegar online, but changed my dressing selection to Italian when I got to the restaurant. Expecting your basic Kraft or Paul Newman’s salad dressing, I was taken aback by the robust taste of fresh spices and garlic. The salad was crisp and delicious. A little skeptical about the tamarind juice that I allowed my coworker to talk me into (thanks, again Elvin!), I sipped it with caution. It was sweet and refreshing with just the right amount of tamarind (similar to a ginger beverage, minus the taste of ginger, but with just enough kick) and ice.

Chicken and Rice and Delicious

The meal was a hit, but once again my eyes were bigger than my stomach. This was partly because I just can’t seem to order only one or two items when I know I have to present my readers with a fair and balanced review and partly because foodies are greedy. Least Favorite Kind of Food: Eel. It really gives me the heebie jeebies. (Ed. note: That’s understandable)

Least Favorite Thing About Calling Restaurants? It’s humiliating to tell the person on the other end of the line all of my special food instructions.  I feel so high maintenance and judged!

Favorite Celebrity Chef? I love Anthony Bourdain! But does he count really? (Ed. note: Absolutely! He is Chef at Large at Les Halles on SeamlessWeb!)

Favorite Cartoon Growing Up? Jem. She WAS truly outrageous. So much so, that I’ve probably dressed up as her countless Halloween’s (Ed: we wish we had a picture of that). I need to give a shoutout to Thundercats though. That show is a close second, plus I had a crush on Lion-O. (Ed. note: I mean really, who didn’t? What a hunk.)

What Superpower Do You Wish You Had? I would love to fly. I would do it every chance I had.

In the Past Year, What’s the Latest You’ve Stayed Up and Why? Hmm… it was a few weeks ago, when I stayed up until 3am testing our iPhone app. I wish I had a more hip answer.

It’s happened to all of us: when the craving for some tasty, greasy, hole-in-the-wall Mexican food hits (often on a weekend late-night), so we give in whole-heartedly and feast on chips and salsa, fried tacos and questionable meats, and then… without fail… comes a very rumbly tumbly.

Many Mexican restaurants are full of food that can upset even the most iron-clad stomach.  Seemingly healthy items like taco salad turn dangerous when served in a deep-fried tortilla and topped with sour cream, cheese and guacamole.

But it’s still quite possible to fill your South-of-the-Border craving and keep your normally-digesting stomach intact. After all, staple Mexican ingredients like black beans and tomatoes are some of the healthiest foods around!

Here are a few tips to keep in mind the next time the craving strikes:

• Fill up on low-calorie chicken tortilla soup as an appetizer or main course.
• Request whole beans instead of refried beans, which are prepared using lard and grease.
• Order for your favorite taco or enchilada a la carte, saving the calories that come along with the side of rice and beans.
• Try ordering grilled, lean meats like turkey or fish rather than carne asada (steak) or pork.
• Get a deconstructed meal where the meat and contents are served on the side, so you can ration your portion sizes and take control of exactly what goes in that tortilla. Better yet – get fajitas to share!
• Load up on grilled veggies in meals like fajitas.
• Top your Mexican food with pico de gallo, hot sauce or lime instead of guacamole – these are two condiments that pack in the flavor without the calories.
• Experiment with Mexican vegetable dishes like corn on the cob with cayenne pepper and lime or stuffed peppers.
