Takeout and delivery food don’t exactly have the best reputation when it come to healthy eating. But the fact of the matter is that there are more than enough healthy options out there for any cuisine. You just have to know where to look. Brooke is back this week with a new take on Healthy Matters:

We’ve talked healthy salads before, and healthy sandwiches follow the same general guidelines. To get the most bang for your buck – nutrition-wise, at least – loading a whole-grain sandwich with veggies is the best way to go. As with salads, you can drastically cut calories by skipping out on cheeses and sauces loaded with fat, and by sticking to lean meats like turkey, white meat chicken breast, and tuna.

But if you’re ready to mix up the usual create-your-own-sandwich combination, you can add bursts of flavor with low-calorie spreads like hummus and vinaigrettes, spicy sauce, or fruit combinations. Here are some ideas to entertain your taste buds without tipping the scale:

Asian Sandwich

Whole grain bread

Tuna

Wasabi vinaigrette

Pineapple

Red onions

Veggie Mediterranean Sandwich

Whole wheat pita pocket

Hummus spread

Cucumbers

Sprouts

Olives

Turkey Apple Sandwich

Whole wheat bread

Turkey

Apple

Honey mustard

Banana peppers

Italian Sandwich

Whole wheat bread

Chicken breast

Basil

Tomato

(Ed. Note: Entourage? Bob Ryan? Get it?)

Allow myself to introduce…myself. My name is Jonathan Zabusky and I’m not only the SeamlessWeb President, I’m also a client. Like many of you, every morning when I get off the train, all I want is some caffeine and some carbs. So I’m as excited as anyone for these new mobile apps, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here and let me tell you a little story about how we/I got to this point…

I find myself finally going Back to the Future. It’s been over 11 years since I left the glorious days of working at MovieFone (no, not AOL Moviefone, the original bleeding edge pre-AOL MovieFone), but memories are flooding back today, and they’re not all of Kramer. In those days (read: Internet boom), we were leading the charge and pushing people AWAY from the phone and TO the PC for web ordering. Nobody else was really doing it then, but we realized the inherent difficulties in buying movie tickets over the phone through 777-FILM. Yeah, it worked better than squinting to read the (often out-of-date) newspaper listings, but the whole thing needed a makeover and MovieFone.com was the answer.

So now the irony. Today, I am launching my blogging career on The Delivery Bag by telling you, Mr./Mrs. Loyal SeamlessWebber, to leave the internet behind (at least for the day) and go back to the phone by trying the SeamlessWeb mobile apps for iPhone and BlackBerry! Not even Carnac the Magnificent (dating myself?) could have predicted that reversal of fortune, but we’re very excited that these apps are finally fully operational and we really believe that they’re going to change the way you think about ordering food.

I know that I’m gonna have a new morning routine and with the way that smartphones are surgically attached to peoples’ bodies these days, I have a feeling that some other folks will figure out some even more creative ways to take advantage of the apps. So have fun, let us know how they’re working, and tell us what else we can do to make them even better!

The Order:

Once again my adventures of food hunting led me to a restaurant whose name and location had piqued my interest before I even saw the menu on SeamlessWeb. It turns out that Dao Palate, which is conveniently located in Prospect Heights, caters to vegans. Now I am no serious carnivore by any stretch of the imagination, but I do enjoy some meat, so I was intrigued to find out what exactly it means when a restaurant prides itself on the use of soy proteins.

Turns out that it’s complicated. I read, then reread, the menu, before skeptically ordering Summer Rolls with Hoisin and Peanut Sauce, General Tso’s Soy Protein with Broccoli and a side of Mixed Green Salad. I wavered between ordering the Thai iced tea, Thai iced coffee and the homemade iced green tea, before choosing the coffee. I figured you can’t go wrong with a cup of iced coffee. And boy was I right!

The Meal:

I ordered early in the afternoon for pick up at 5:15 p.m. Now while I completely trust SeamlessWeb, I must admit that despite my confirmation email I was still a little nervous when I arrived at the restaurant to pick up my food. Expecting to see the usual plain interior with small tables and bright lights, I was impressed by the warm and inviting ambiance with dark brown tables, ultra dim lighting, yellowish-brown walls, and hardwood floors all making me want to stay. But it was a pickup order, so I told them who I was and a waiter placed my bag on the table in front of me right on time. I was expecting him to hand me my iced coffee, but I noticed it was securely stored in the carryout bag. The plastic cup had a piece of tape over the perforated straw insertion and was tightly stored in a thick white paper bag with a staple to keep it from spilling. It’s obvious that they have affection for subway riders.

Once I got home I tore into my bag. A little nervous of what I might find, I popped the lid of the General Tso’s Soy Protein and smiled at the perfectly reddish-brown, glazed circular soy protein pieces. The texture and consistency was just like that of real chicken. About eight steamed broccoli florets were evenly distributed in all four corners of the package. I dumped a small container of brown rice in the corner of the dish and bit into a piece of soy. It was absolutely delicious. The soy protein was perfectly seasoned and marinated in sauce. The broccoli was just right, not too soft and not too crunchy.

Now That's What I Call Dinner, Volume 12

Moving on, I’m not quite sure what vegetables were used in the Summer Rolls (all I can say is that they were slightly crunchy and white), but I am sure that the two-inch mint leaf added an essential touch to the refreshing, healthy appetizer (and I actually enjoyed them more without the hoisin and peanut sauce. Meanwhile, the homemade Thai iced coffee hit the spot. It was perfectly blended with spices, milk and ice chips. Even after I had a few sips on the train and rode home, the coffee never lost its delicious dark, roasted flavor.

After a meal like that, I can truthfully say Dao Palate has provided me with a new outlook on vegan specialties. If this meal was this great, I can only imagine what my next one will taste like. Dao Palate gets an A+. Stay tuned for more Brooklyn eating adventures!
