The Hoodoo Truth: Encouraging Old School Workers To Go Online

My dream is to have more black people, Indians, and Scott-Irish folks who are old-school workers to come online. I write this because a big problem I see online is that people are able to reach far more people online than in their local communities. This means that individuals who are not teaching traditional hoodoo/rootwork/conjure are able to reach hundreds, if not thousands of people. These people in turn then pass on this pseudo-conjure to the people in their lives. So in order to combat this spread of these non-traditional practices, it's important for elders in the tradition to come forward. So that's my belief and opinion. If anyone knows of old-school workers and feels that they may be interested in going online then I would ask readers to please encourage them to do so.

I was watching an episode of the TLC show, Property Ladder. The episode was titled "Ghostbusters", so it caught my attention. It turns out that a pair had bought a house and were trying to flip it for profit. The problem being that the house was built on the old Black Hope cemetery, a former slave cemetery. Many people who had had houses built over the cemetery complained of hauntings and assorted tragedies. Such tales gave rise to "The Black Hope Curse", or "The Black Hope Horror". The book, Old Style Conjure Candle Burning by Starr is a total scam!

If you purchase this book you are almost stealing a life-time of tricks from an authentic, traditional conjure woman. If you purchase this book you will be ripping Momma Starr off!

This is not a tired rehash of material that is easily found online. This is the real deal, folks! You purchase this book and you will read the book and you will know you are dealing with real power! You will not find the information in this book anywhere else.

Momma Starr writes as she talks and teaches. It's very down-to-earth and actually comforting. For the older workers out there I'm sure reading this book will remind you of your kin, of how momma or grandma use to do things. For the new workers, prepare to have your mind blown because I can assure you that reading Starr's books and listening to her Old Style Conjure blogtalk radio show will be the closest thing to real, authentic hoodoo/rootwork/conjure that you will ever get save for getting out in the community and talking to folks.

Now, I will be honest. After reading the book I sent an email to Momma Starr telling her I thought she was giving away far too much information. I actually got that sinking feeling in your stomach you get when you feel guilty. I felt guilty for simply reading the book! It's just filled with way too many old-school worker secrets. I'm sure many of the old-school workers who may read Starr's book will think she's crazy for giving away this much information. That's why I'm going to call anyone who purchases Momma Starr's book a thief.

If you purchase this book you will learn more about real, traditional hoodoo/rootwork/conjure than anything you may find online. That's a fact!

As far as the Candle Burning book goes, it is a 180 page, spiral-bound book that contains colored pictures. The material inside covers old-school worker candle burning tricks that many people will never even dream possible. This is not the sort of thing new workers are just going to accidentally discover for themselves. These are things they must be taught. Not only did I learn a great deal from reading this book but Momma Starr has also unknowingly answered several of my questions concerning things I was taught by old-school workers. I won't go into detail here but I was taught not to burn pastel-colored candles. Momma Starr never mentions the word pastel in the book but does explain why they aren't worked with.

So don't you purchase this book! This book is dangerous! It has far too many old-school conjure worker secrets. Anyone who purchases this book and puts the information to use will be a force to reckon with; therefore stay away from it. Stay away from Momma Starr's books, her website, and her Old Style Conjure show at blogtalk radio. Don't you allow yourself to be exposed to the real deal. We can't have all these people running around having this knowledge!

So, if you have it in your head that you must purchase Momma Starr's book, then all I can say is, For shame! You are practically robbing cherished secrets from an old-school worker!

The Hoodoo Truth: W.W.G.D.?

The majority of people from the South are only 1-2 generations removed from hoodoo/rootwork/conjure. As people are trying to reclaim the practice they may be given questionable teachings. A good method to help discern if a teaching is legit or not is to use one of two methods. The first method is one that comes from Papa Ce. According to Papa Ce if a person receives some questionable teachings they should just ask themselves if the slaves on the plantation could or would have used such. If not, then it's probably not legit.

A second way that I use and favor plays off of that saying, "What Would Jesus Do?". The hoodoo/rootwork/conjure version would be, "What Would Grandma Do?", or "What Would Great-Grandma (Granny) Do?", or even "What Would Momma Do?". So if a new worker receives some questionable teachings or advice they can always use either Papa Ce's method or "W.W.G.D.?", in order to discern whether or not the teaching is traditional hoodoo.

For example, say a person goes to a worker for cleansing advice and the worker says:

"What you do is you go on down to the metaphysical shop and purchase you the largest citrine stone. It may put you back a $100 or so, but it's worth it. Then you are going to go home and you are going to burn some nag champa incense and nothing else or it won't work. Then you place that citrine stone on your chakra points, leaving it there for a hour before moving on to the next chakra..."

So if a person suspects that it's not "real hoodoo", then they should ask themselves if this is something that the plantation slaves would have used or taught or is it something one's grandma would have recommended. If not then it's probably not authentic hoodoo/rootwork/conjure.

The Hoodoo Truth: Incorporating Things Into Hoodoo

Workers can incorporate many things into their practice. I for one incorporate working with stones, such as hematite for protection and reversals, black onyx/jet/tourmaline for protection and removing of evil, rose quartz for love, citrine for cleansing, jade/malachite for money, etc. Of course these stones are not part of the tradition simply because they were not easily obtainable. They do fit nicely into the practice if a worker wants to include them.

The key thing to remember about incorporating things into one's practice is to never throw-out or displace something. For example, we don't throw out the Bible and the Christian God in favor of a pagan god or pagan holy book. That would be displacing. Another thing to keep in mind is that if one is going to teach the tradition that one should not teach these inclusions as being part of the tradition. For example, if a worker is into the chakras then the worker should never say something like, "In hoodoo/rootwork/conjure we use the chakras when....". It's not true because the chakras are not part of the practice and are simply an inclusion. So for example If I were to become a teacher I would never say, "In hoodoo/rootwork/conjure we use hematite for reversing work", simply because hematite is not part of the tradition. The closest thing to be found in the tradition would be iron, which is used for protection.

So incorporate what you will, just make sure not to displace or teach it as part of the tradition.

People send me emails all the time asking for advice. I don't mind it. However, I've had a rash of emails from people who are not telling me why they want advice on something, especially enemy work. Let me just state that if anyone sends me an email asking me for advice on enemy work without explaining the issue then I will reply by telling you that you better be sure that the work is justified. I have to do that because I know that people are not being taught the difference between justified vs. unjustified work. I have a moral obligation to teach people about this.

So what has been happening is that people are sending me these emails for advice for enemy work, wanting me to give out strong enemy work, when I have no idea what your intention is or what the situation is. I don't want to read another sarcastic reply from people saying, "thanks for nothing", or when I do give advice I especially don't want to hear the phrase, "Well, thanks anyway", as if I didn't give any advice or refused to give advice.

So I just want to nip this in the bud. If you are going to send me an email asking for advice on enemy work you need to explain the situation. You also need to be open to the advice you are given. I'm feed up with typing a full page reply to people with advice to only get "Well, thanks anyway", in return.

Also, if you not explaining the situation because you know that it is not justified, don't bother sending me an email. I don't practice witchcraft.
