CinemaBlend got some details on the 25th Anniversery Edition of Wargames. For the really, really lame who have not seen this 1983 film, it starred Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman and Alley Sheedy and was nominated for 3 Oscars. Directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, Stakeout), Wargames was about David Lightman (Broderick), a young computer hacker who unknowingly hacks into a NORAD military artificial intelligence computer system called WOPR and accidentally begins the first stages of World War III, thinking that he is actually playing a video game.

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters Life!) - Mexico's Manuel Uribe, once the world's most obese man, is now vying for a different record: the human who has lost the most weight.

Uribe, who weighed as much as a small truck at more than half a tonne, is dieting while confined to a reinforced bed that he has not left for the past six years because he is so heavy.

He has lost 518 pounds since March 2006 on a diet of grapefruits, egg-white only omelets, fish, chicken, vegetables and peanuts.

Now weighing 717 pounds -- the size of three hefty men -- Uribe is still unable to move his swollen legs but hopes to get out of the house next month for only the third time in six years to celebrate his 43rd birthday.

He will still be in bed, hauled onto a tow truck for a trip to the mountainous countryside outside his home city of Monterrey in northern Mexico. It will be a rerun of a failed attempt in March that was thwarted when his bed hit an overpass.

"It's a miracle I've got this far. I was going to kill myself two years ago when my wife left me, but God sent me excellent doctors," said Uribe, his torso still huge with flaps of puffy white skin and sagging, fatty bulges.

Uribe spent the 1990s eating pizzas and burgers in the United States where he worked as a computer repairman. Addicted to junk food, he eventually tipped the scales at 1,235 pounds back in Mexico, bingeing on greasy tacos.

His bulk made him the world's heaviest man and won him a place in the 2008 edition of the Guinness World Records. Photos of his time in Florida and Texas show the transformation of a once chubby man to a bloated, whale-like figure.

"At the Big n' Tall store in Dallas, they no longer had my size. Then I got tailor-made pants and I grew out of those too," said Uribe from his bed by the open door at street level, where he likes to chat with his neighbors to stop the boredom.

TEARFUL TV APPEAL

In Mexico, Uribe underwent a tummy tuck operation but it caused massive, permanent swelling, and did not reduce his weight.

Abandoned by his wife, his health failing and with no income, Uribe pleaded for help on Mexican television, stirring up intense international interest.

Uribe, cared for by his mother Otilia, turned down offers of gastric bypass surgery in Italy. Instead he took free medical help from U.S. doctor Barry Sears. He lost weight following the Zone Diet, which is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

"I was impotent before, but now everything's working again. Ask my girlfriend," he said happily, his Guinness World Records certificate hanging on the wall.

Uribe, who relies on his family's small wholesale clothes business and the generosity of friends to survive, said people at Guinness have spoken to him about his rapid weight loss and could eventually put him in the record books.

Rosalie Bradford, an American woman who died in 2006, recorded the greatest weight loss for a female after she shed 907 pounds. The record for a man is held by Jon Brower Minnoch who lost 924 pounds, according to Guinness World Records.

Uribe, who became an Evangelical Christian during his weight loss drive, said his goal is to weigh 285 pounds by 2010, meaning he would have lost 950 pounds.

Records aside, Uribe just wants to get out of bed and make a living from preaching the benefits of healthy eating.

"I get lots of e-mails from people saying they are inspired by my progress and I want to get the word out about healthy eating. I'm not against people who sell junk food, but you've got to be informed not to eat it," he said.
Mexico's efforts to end violence against women stymied by macho culture
By Franco Ordonez, McClatchy Newspapers
Tue May 13, 4:08 PM ET

MEXICO CITY — Martha couldn't take the beatings anymore. She visited local police three times last year to report that her husband was punching her in the stomach so hard she could barely breathe. Each time, the police told her they could do nothing unless she returned with cuts and bruises.

Discouraged and fearful, Martha, 43, who asked that her last name not be published for fear of retribution from her husband, in March packed some clothes and left. She's lived with three different relatives since.

"There were times I didn't want to wake up," she said, crying. "I wanted it to stop. I wanted to die."

Every day thousands of Mexican women suffer physical and psychological abuse at the hands of their spouses, despite a federal law passed over a year ago to protect them. Nearly one-third of the country's 31 states still haven't adopted the law, which requires Mexican law enforcement to punish acts of violence against women. Even where the law has been adopted, it's not being applied, say legislators and activists.

That's because, despite an official push to move beyond the cliche image of macho, Mexico is still very much a man's world when it comes to violence against women.

So, I bring this up because, I was once accused of being racist when talking about the aggressiveness in which Mexicans tend to hit on women. My response was that we can recognize cultural differences without being racist. Mexicans just so happen to have a rather machismo culture. ^Here's my proof. :p

...because I don't want to derail Kathy's very interesting and worthy thread. :)

For those of you who know nothing past "the ACLU protected NAMBLA", please, read on.

ACLU Statement on Defending Free Speech of Unpopular Organizations (8/31/2000)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK--In the United States Supreme Court over the past few years, the American Civil Liberties Union has taken the side of a fundamentalist Christian church, a Santerian church, and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. In celebrated cases, the ACLU has stood up for everyone from Oliver North to the National Socialist Party. In spite of all that, the ACLU has never advocated Christianity, ritual animal sacrifice, trading arms for hostages or genocide. In representing NAMBLA today, our Massachusetts affiliate does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children.

What the ACLU does advocate is robust freedom of speech for everyone. The lawsuit involved here, were it to succeed, would strike at the heart of freedom of speech. The case is based on a shocking murder. But the lawsuit says the crime is the responsibility not of those who committed the murder, but of someone who posted vile material on the Internet. The principle is as simple as it is central to true freedom of speech: those who do wrong are responsible for what they do; those who speak about it are not.

It is easy to defend freedom of speech when the message is something many people find at least reasonable. But the defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. That was true when the Nazis marched in Skokie. It remains true today.

_____________

Obviously, I do not support NAMBLA. However, it is important to note that members of the organization were being held responsible for a murder they did not commit, nor did they specifically advocate. Last I checked, while they may have written a manual on how to molest, that's not the same as inciting murder.

In 1969, the Supreme Court ruled that said speech advocating an illegal act is legally protected unless it is "directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action."

This is the ruling that has protected all sorts of "How To" authors. Numerous books and websites are dedicated to how to make illegal bombs, for example, yet they are allowed to exist, because they aren't specifically provoking anything.

That being said, NAMBLA does not advocate forcible rape, torture and murder, which is what the lawsuit in question was attempting to hold them accountable for. Read a portion of the defense's case here.

The ACLU steps in wherever they feel that the Constitution is being threatened. They've defended everyone from major corporations to churches to individuals. They don't pick and choose...The more controversial the case, the greater the need to strong defense of freedom.

So my username is SoUncool because that's what my kiddo thinks...Mom is SoUncool. I really don't know why she thinks that. I don't wear nipple-high-waisted "mom jeans", I drive a Jeep, I don't sit around and eat bon-bons all day (well, I kinda polished off my small box of dark chocolate Ferrero chocolates that my sis gave me for Mother's Day so my bad, I'm a liar), I'm gainfully employed, I'm not a crack whore, I have a great sense of humor, I don't sit around and listen to Mariah Carey and Celine Dion (more of a Disturbed-Blakq Audio-Shitake Monkey-Trashmen-Powerman5000 kinda gal). I mean WTF? Maybe it's cuz I'm inkless and piercing-less? I even took her to see bad-ass chicks kicking ass a few weeks ago at the local roller derby...what more does she want? (The announcer said, "It's kinda like AssCar.") I'm just shitting ya... My kid is awesome and I read sites like this so I'm aware of who/what is out there in this crazy messed up world to better protect my daughter.

Darth Vader' spared jail in Jedi church attacks

HOLYHEAD, Wales - A man who dressed up as Darth Vader, wearing a garbage bag for a cape, and assaulted the founders of a group calling itself the Jedi church was given a suspended sentence Tuesday.

Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones — aka Master Jonba Hehol — with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head, prosecutors told Holyhead Magistrates' Court.

He also whacked Jones' 18-year-old cousin, Michael Jones — known as Master Mormi Hehol — bruising his thigh in the March 25 incident, prosecutors said.

The two cousins and Barney Jones' brother, Daniel, set up the Church of Jediism, Anglesey order, last year. Jedi is the faith followed by some of the central characters in the "Star Wars" films.

The group, which claims about 30 members, says on its Web site that it uses "insight and knowledge" from the films as "a guide to living a better and more worthwhile life."

"We all love the films and what they stand for. Obviously some people are going to laugh about it," the Wales on Sunday newspaper quoted Barney Jones as saying last month. "But a lot of people do take it seriously."

Unfortunately for Hughes, his March attack was recorded on a video camera that the cousins had set up to film themselves in a light saber battle.

"Darth Vader! Jedis!" Hughes shouted as he approached.

Hughes claimed he couldn't remember the incident, having drunk the better part of a 2 1/2-gallon (10-liter) box of wine beforehand.

"He knows his behavior was wrong and didn't want it to happen but he has no recollection of it," said Hughes' lawyer, Frances Jones.

District Judge Andrew Shaw sentenced Hughes to two months in jail but suspended the sentence for one year. He also ordered Hughes to pay $195 to each of his victims and $117 in court costs.

In the 2001 United Kingdom census, 390,000 — 0.7 percent of the population — listed Jedi as their religion.

NEW YORK - A New York City man is suing JetBlue Airways Corp. for more than $2 million because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight...

NEW YORK - A New York City man is suing JetBlue Airways Corp. for more than $2 million because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight attendant and sit on the toilet for more than three hours on a flight from California.

Gokhan Mutlu, of Manhattan's Inwood section, says in court papers the pilot told him to "go 'hang out' in the bathroom" about 90 minutes into the San Diego to New York flight because the flight attendant complained that the "jump seat" she was assigned was uncomfortable, the lawsuit said.

Mutlu was traveling on a a "buddy pass," a standby travel voucher that JetBlue employees give to friends, from New York to San Diego on Feb. 16, and returned to New York on Feb. 23, the lawsuit said.

Initially, Mutlu was told a flight attendant had taken the last seat on the plane, but then he was advised she would sit in the employee "jump seat," meaning he could have the last seat, the lawsuit said.

The pilot told him 1 1/2 hours into the five-hour flight that he would have to relinquish the seat to the flight attendant, court papers say. But the pilot said that Mutlu could not sit in the jump seat because only JetBlue employees were permitted to sit there, the lawsuit said.

When Mutlu expressed reluctance to go sit in the bathroom, the pilot, who was not named in the lawsuit, told him that "he was the pilot, that this was his plane, under his command that (Mutlu) should be grateful for being on board," the lawsuit said.

When the aircraft hit turbulence and passengers were directed to return to their seats, but "the plaintiff had no seat to return to, sitting on a toilet stool with no seat belts," court papers say.

Some time later, a male flight attendant knocked on the restroom door and told Mutlu he could return to his original seat, court papers say.

Mutlu's lawsuit, filed Friday in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, says JetBlue negligently endangered him by not providing him with a seat with a safety belt or harness, in violation of federal law.

A JetBlue spokesman declined comment on the lawsuit Monday.
Group protests at Cobb bar, calling Obama T-shirts racist
Mulligan's selling shirts with 'Curious George' picture

By CHRISTIAN BOONE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/13/08

Marietta tavern owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" scrolled underneath, are "cute." But to a coalition of critics, the shirts are an insulting exploitation of racial stereotypes from generations past.

"It's time to put an end to this," said Rich Pellegrino, a Mableton resident and director of the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance. He was among about 15 people who protested outside Mulligan's Bar and Grill Tuesday afternoon against the sale of the "racist and highly offensive" shirts.
"There's no place for these views, not in this day and age," he said.

Word of the controversy drew native Mariettan Pam Lindley, 47, to show up in support of the protesters.

"I don't want people to think this is what Marietta is all about," she added, pointing at tavern.

Two protesters, who stationed themselves near the tavern entrance, approached Norman and asked him to stop the T-shirt sales. He told them he won't and asked them to leave his property, though the confrontation did not escalate.

Just down the street from Marietta's famous Big Chicken, Mulligan's has carved a provocative niche in an increasingly multicultural area, thanks to its owner's ultra-conservative political views. If you live in Marietta, it's impossible not to know what's on Norman's mind, as he posts his views on signs in front of Mulligan's.

Among his recent musings: "I wish Hillary had married OJ," "No habla espanol -- and never will" and the standard "I.N.S. Agents eat free."

"I'm saying out loud what everyone in this town whispers," Norman said in an interview before Tuesday's protest.

Whatever residents think of the signs, organized opposition to his blunt commentaries -- ongoing for 16 years -- had been nonexistent. No longer, says Pellegrino, who, though familiar with Norman's politics, said he was still surprised by the stark imagery of the Obama T-shirts.

"There's a lot of people hurt by this," he said.

Norman said those offended are "hunting for a reason to be mad" and insisted he is "not a racist."

Norman said he sees nothing wrong with depicting Obama as Curious George. "Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears, he looks just like Curious George," Norman said. He said he did not design the shirts himself but bought them through a Web site.

He said he views it as just coincidence that the character on the T-shirt is a monkey. Norman also said proceeds raised from sales will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Nation of Islam and the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials were among the organizations represented at Tuesday's rally.

"Mulligan's is promoting and selling racially offensive T-shirts, and Marietta and Cobb County residents and taxpayers abhor and cannot condone, any longer, this type of divisive and incendiary behavior in our community," said Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of GALEO.
Fab@Home is a project dedicated to making and using fabbers - machines that can make almost anything, right on your desktop. This website provides everything you need to know to build or buy your own simple fabber, and to use it to print three dimensional objects. The hardware designs and software on this website are free and open-source. Once you have your own fabber, you can also download and print various items, try out new materials, or upload and share your own projects. Advanced users can modify and improve the fabber itself.

Disney has released a featurette promoting WALL-E, the new computer animated movie produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The film details a lone, forgotten robot named WALL-E, who had been placed here with a million other robots to help clean up all the trash left by us humans. The effort failed and we all vacated, but WALL-E was left functioning all by himself. For 700 years he has dutifully cleaned up trash on Earth and over this course of time, he has evolved to the point of having feelings. WALL-E falls in love with a robot probe named Eve who was sent to Earth and the film shows the journey WALL-E makes in his effort to win over the heart of another robot.

Check out the new featurette, titled A Hero’s Journey, after the jump. [Read more →]

I figured since this was about religion, even though I am basically asking for advice, I would stick this here.

We are an agnostic household. My child is in kindergarten in a public school. It seems her teacher has taken it upon herself to educate my daughter about Jesus and God. My daughter has come home with all kinds of information that she did not get from home.

At first, I thought maybe she had heard this stuff from other children, as we live in the south and people are very religious here, but she has told me on more than one occasion that her information was given to her by her teacher.

Now, I have been blowing this off for months, not giving it too much thought...equating her newfound belief to her belief in Santa and the Tooth Fairy.

BUT NOW, I am starting to get pissed. My daughter was telling me at bedtime about how God is responsible for the storms and tornadoes that kill people. When she was asked where she got this information from, she acted like she was going to be in trouble. Almost like she was spilling a secret. She was asked in the a very non threatening way. So her fear was not of me or her father.

I almost feel like the teacher is doing this on purpose. She at the very least knows that my daughter's father is Jewish and does not recognize Jesus as the son of god. We sent driedels and chocolate gelt to her class at Hanukkah. (Mostly because we realized that they were talking about "baby Jesus" in class.) So, yeah, its obvious.

Anyway, my question is, should I just continue to ignore it because school is almost over and she will soon forget this stuff anyway, or should I confront the teacher?

Good morning,

I've been everywhere on this intrawebz since about 1995. I've participated in a number of forums/boards, have posted pix, and even met some of my online friends over the years. Hell, I met my husband on the internet!

I have been seriously enjoying the DD Picture thread, but have hesitated to post pix to it. Why? Well, there's something about the nature of this site and what we do here that gives me pause. We all know, that if someone is motivated enough, we're not anonymous in internetland. And we deal with publicly shaming some extremely violent and deviant people. We all know that we sometimes draw their (or their family's) ire. And we specifically flog people who like to hurt small children....a lot.

So, there's something inside me that says it's not safe to post pictures of me and my family. I'm not trying to be paranoid. And I'm not trying to scare anyone who posted pix. But I would like to hear what you all think about this issue. Am I being retarded?? Talk to me. I value your judgments.
