Yay for The Dark Knight. The biggest and best movie of the year. Double Yay for The Dark Knight on DVD. I may never leave the house again! Riddle me this. If you're a marketing executive for Warner... how do you go about releasing one of the highest grossing films of all time? You release a whole shit load of limited edition packages! That's what you do.

You'll have your choice between a two-disc DVD, a steelbook two-disc SPECIAL edition, a Bat-Pod collectors edition, a Batman Mask collectors edition, and the Blu-Ray version of the film.

Which means I'm going to have to buy this one no less than THREE times. As I need that Bat-Pod and Mask collectors sets... along with the Blu-Ray version.

Mountain of the Cannibal God is one of the many films churned out in the cannibal sub-genre during the 70’s and 80’s. I don’t know if I’d put the film in the top tier with Cannibal Holocaust or Doctor Butcher M.D., but it would definitely fall in the higher end of the middle of the pack. The film comes jam-packed with all of the necessary ingredients for a classic cannibal film; gore, nudity, a tropical REAL animal slaughter, island, sinister people and, of course, cannibalism. Mountain went so far as to throw in an extra scene of interest to certain people, that I’ll touch upon later.

Escalofrío, aka Shiver to the non-Spanish speakers (or at least that’s what they say on IMDB) is a rather interesting film. The premise is simple enough, but is only brought to light as the layers of the story are pealed back, leading to a satisfying, if not unpredictable finale. The first thing that caught my attention is that Escalofrío is from the producer of Pan’s Labyrinth and The Orphanage (two of my favorite films of the decade), and I know that this is usually just a marketing ploy, but I had to find out for myself. I found myself put off at first, but by the end of the film, thoroughly caught up in the story. To say the least Escalofrío is a roller-coaster ride that puts the audience through a series of highs and lows and some nice unexpected twists.

Two days ago I watched a film that made my skin crawl. Not because it was a terrifying descent into the mind of human emotion, oh no. This film made me shake with anger. I have watched a few films in my lifetime that have enraged me to the point I wanted to kick a baby. Chalk another nomination for that club. Revamped is a low-budget horror film that can’t decide if it’s a comedy film or a horror film, but it does manage to make the viewing audience feel dumber after watching the flick. I was going to spend a little bit of time trying to find a way to say something positive about this film, but after 48 hours I still want to kick the filmmaker in the teeth, and therefore am writing this review as a warning to anyone that sees the generic vampire box-art and is interested.

Myspace is a wonderful thing. I've met so many awesome people in the film business because of it. I've had numerous conversations with directors on the site including Leif Jonker and James Gunn. It allows people to get their films out there and connect with their fans.

Recently, a man named Roger A Scheck started posting bulletins about his debut film, 'Nobody Loves Alice'. The guy has been raving over his own film for a few weeks now, and I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm always up for a good direct to video horror flick, and I was hoping to be surprised.

Nobody Loves Alice tells the story of a young woman named Alice, who we are introduced to in a flashback of her child hood. She's standing in a room, asking an off camera character if they love her, while she lights a huge match. Flash forward to present day, and we find that Alice is now a twenty-something, mousy secretary. No one realizes that she has a man cuffed to her bed in her apartment and has been torturing him for what one can assume would be weeks.

Alice begins to make friends with Abigail and Megan, two co-workers at her office. Abigail is getting ready to get engaged to Alex, her long time boyfriend. Megan has recently placed a seed of doubt into Abigail's mind by saying that all men cheat, and if given the right circumstances, even Alex will do so.

Their plan is to have Alice go meet Alex at a park and try to seduce him. They meet, and Alex realizes that it was all a scam by his fiancee. He gives Alice a ride back to her apartment and is not seen again. You can probably tell what happens from there.

This film ends up being wholly underwhelming. The problem with it is that it is made up of components from numerous other films. It feels like an even lower budget version of Lucky McKee's 'May' which is the much more superior film. It is really a shame as the film starts out quite promising, but just goes a route that we have all seen numerous times before.

The one redeeming factor of the film is Alice herself, Nitzan Mager. She puts in a great, very subtle performance here. Also, she enjoys walking around her apartment in a white bra and panties quite often throughout the film, which doesn't hurt. Hell, she can keep me captive and rape me anytime she wants!

I wish Roger Scheck the best in his future endeavors. I'm going to be forgiving as this is his directorial debut. The only other projects he seems to have been involved with were a couple of BET reality shows. It's obvious that he has never really worked with a film because he just didn't seem to be in control of the film itself. The directing was sloppy to say the least, aside from a few decent shots. Not only that, but the man cannot place music or create a proper transition to save his life.

Check out the film if you are able to pick it up on the cheap or if you have a coupon for a free rental. It's not a film you'll want to see again, but is worth it if only for Mager's performance.

Have you ever watched a movie that was so insane and weird that it had you wondering if it was even from this world at all? I have. That movie's name is Necropolis, and it had me checking my dollar bill to see if George Washington's mug was still on it or if I had, in fact, went to another dimension via some Twillight Zone space/time warp. Total batshit crazy fun, I don't even know where to begin.

Should I start off by telling you that it has a six breasted witch that lets zombies suckle ecto-plasm from her teats? Maybe I should mention that the "hero" of the film is an African American priest that operates out of what looks like a janitors closet and is convinced he can remember all his past lives (since when do Christians believe in past lives!?), including the ones where he was a woman. He battles evil with makeshift crosses (see sticks tied together with twine) and good old gasoline. Or I could mention the uber substellar acting, where the players sometimes accidently glimpse straight at the camera, and mutter lines so bad they have to be ad lib?

I'm convinced this film is from some weird universe where movies like Street Trash earn academy rewards and the movie C.H.U.D. is considered a docudrama.

The plot really has nothing to do with the title of the film; there is no city of the dead, only a witch who sucks slime out of people's heads and pursues some devil ring the entire film. Why? Well, I'm not really even sure. I don't even know how she survived getting stabbed in the begining, where a mob breaks up her Satan worshiping gig. The film doesn't bother with petty things, like explaination, so flash cut to the very next scene and she's riding a motorcycle and dancing to trancy 80's disco beats, hypnotizing people into commiting suicide and making out with her.

Somewhere, hidden in the subtext of this film, lies the answer to everything. Just have to keep looking and digging deeper. Maybe it has something to do with ecto-plasm leaking boobs.....

What do you get when you mix seduction, nudity, lesbianism, a few splatters of blood, and vampires? Why, you’d get Vampyres, that’s what. I’ve seen plenty of vampire films in my time, and I’ve seen a few films based heavily in lesbianism (what?). Hell, I’ve even seen Vampiros Lesbos, from exploitation director Jesus Franco, which was dull and dreary and managed to make lesbianism with vampires boring. How the hell do you do that? Well, he managed. Well, Jose Larraz managed to put together a decent, if not satisfying little lust filled horror film with Vampyres.

It is the morning after, and we pick up with the survivors of "Feast's terrifying night before. There are more monsters and they are even angrier/hungrier. The monsters have made it into the small neighboring town in the middle of nowhere and the surviving locals have to band together to figure out how to survive. Like that is even a real possibility. Will Honey Pie pay for her desertion? Will Tuffy make it to Heroine's kid in time? Is that Harley Mom's twin sister? So many questions, it will take another sequel to answer them all. But for now, we can only sit back and be terrorized.

When you start down the path of seeking out video obscurity certain movies tend to stand out as being cult even amongst the cult. In other words, they are like myths spoken in the hushed whispers of B-movie seekers and horror flick nerds. They are the really hard ones to find and they usually have a reputation of being particularly brutal and weird. Casual film goers have little or no chance of actually catching them unless they were strolling the aisles of the old dusty 80's VHS store back when these types of films were crammed onto shelves, battling for space and rental. They'd have crazy taglines and attention grabbing cover art all aimed at nabbing suckers (the lucky ones) into renting them and wasting (having fun with) their life.

The Abomination is just such a film.

It was cultivated by the sheer spirit of film making. The art of selling low budget films for big budget payoff. A camera and a dream. Mix in crazy gore, hand puppet creature effects, biblic riffing, mommy issues, and you've got The Abomination.

I've been following this flick for a bit. I heard it was good. I heard it was shit. You know how it goes. It's a flick that you either love if you're into the sleaze arts or hate if you don't know what you're getting into. Even in this age of DVD release and push button shopping this flick was hard to track down. I wasn't settling for some youtube cut and paste deal. I wanted the real thing, and finally, I got it.

If you don't go into this expecting to have a little fun then forget it. The film is all over the place. The best gore is a montage/dream sequence right at the begining of the flick. There's way too much padding. Way too little nudity. And the effects suck ass.

But then again....there's something else. There's this magical feeling. This warmth. This crazy idea that, despite its faults, it's entertaining, and moreso, entertaining enough to warrant multiple viewings. I couldn't put my finger on it. I couldn't understand it. It got under my skin. It incubated in my lower intestine. I felt like a child discovering girls and not understanding my erection.

I dreamed of vagina monsters with teeth hiding in my cabinet that night. I got up and drew a picture inspired by the experience. I checked my washing machine for flesh eating creatures. I couldn't stop thinking about how "The Abomination makes all things desolate" as I plugged away at work. I loved it.

Seek it, buy it, share that feeling.

There's something to be said about films that have their own theme song. It takes a little extra mustard for the film makers to care enough about the film they were working on to commit it to a melody all it's own. I'm not talking about the good ones either, created by musical celebrities already soaking up the limelight. I'm talking about the basement musician synthesizing an original melody on some old beat up Casio while belting out a catchy tune. Blood and sweat folks, the blue collared.....and the cheesier the theme the better. When it warns you to "stay out of the dark side of the forest", and I think I'm paraphrasing the actual song here, but maybe, just maybe, you need to stay the fuck out of The Forest.

The Forest is a flick that hit video stores while the backyard filmaking mentality was in full swing. Sure you might not have the best actors, a meaningful plot, sound equipment, or money, but if you had the drive you could reach thousands with whatever DTV monstrosity you could crap out. Sometimes though even the most amateur of outings could elevate itself above its individual parts and artistic misdirection. These efforts sometimes end up being the cult classics of many a b-film nerd. I'm not sure what you'd classify this movie as, but I guess that's up to the reader.

The first time I watched The Forest I wasn't impressed at all. I'm pretty sure I totally tuned out after the first hour. There's the prerequisite kill to let you know that there is in fact a slasher on the loose in the woods, then not much happends. There's this battle of the sexes to see which gender can last longer in the wilderness. Then theme music. Machismo posing. More cheesy giggle inducing theme music. Nothing again. It's easy to see why I was so easily distracted, especially when I was watching it with a few friends over.

Then I watched it again last night by my lonesome and something magical happend. I was totally enthralled. When the ghost kids start appearing part of me was laughing, the other part was slightly creeped out. Then the killer was shown, he tricks the guy into eating a part of his own girlfriend, and I was kind of taken back. Sure he looks like a normal Coors beer guzzling redneck slob. Hell, you could probably find twenty carbon copies of him in any suburbia on any given Sunday, which is precisely why it came off as kind of creepy. This guy could cross you in the street. He could be the hobo down at Tully's sipping beer off of other people's half drunk mugs. He could be your neighbor. And he's bat shit nuts, but you wouldn't know it from casual conversation. That's scary.

I think that's what I missed out on by going into this with the mindset that this was just going to cater to my sleazehound taste buds. It's not really meant for that even though the package looks otherwise. It's a creepshow. The main pull is being unsettling. From the young kid's dialoge to the reason why this middle aged goat is out in the woods hacking people up...it's aimed to be a creeping gut churner rather than the typical visceral hack and slash.

Sure the kids end up overstaying their welcome. Sure the ending is some pigeon holed nonsense about relationships being mended for better or worse. Sure there isn't much gore or nudity. Against all odds I ended up liking it. Like day old meatloaf, it tasted better the second time. I'm glad Code Red released it in DVD format. I'm glad to have given it a second chance. I'm not saying anyone else will really enjoy it, or that it's a cheese classic, but I dug it, and I don't think it's so wildly inept or boring that nobody else might like spending a lazy afternoon digesting it.
Aside from one particular conversation about "the Almighty" that reminded me of Swivel, watching a really hot girl get her ear ripped off and the most awesome death scene ever done by an animatronic rat, I though it was meh.
