DML is hosting this special fund raising event to be held in the library's beautiful upstairs meeting room, "The Lyceum". Invite your friends and family to take a break from the winter doldrums. Enjoy hot tea along with delicious breads, cakes, pastries and sandwiches in the Lyceum's warm setting. Saturday, February 25th at 1:30 PM. Reservations are needed as seating is limited. Tickets $15.00 are available at the library.

Be it Turkey Day Murder, Mistletoe Murder, or St. Patrick’s Day Murder, amateur sleuth Lucy Stone solves every fiendish and cleverly designed homicide this creative author can imagine. Fans are invited to catch up on Lucy Stone’s latest adventure Chocolate Covered Murder – she had quite a Valentine’s Day this year! Our audience will be treated to a glimpse into the brain of a mystery writer who has unusual murders on her mind. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Dennis Public Library - Bake Sale to benefit Cape Cod Genealogical Society

Bring your sweet tooth! Proceeds will benefit the Society and help pay for the very popular Ancestry.com database, which is available at Dennis Public Library and helps patrons conduct research on family histories.

The Cape Cod Genealogical Society’s “Genealogy Room” is located at Dennis Public Library. The collection includes genealogy-related books, magazines, CDs, and unpublished materials. CCGS volunteers are on hand to assist Society members and the public. The Genealogy Room’s hours of operation are Tuesdays 12 – 4, Thursdays 10 – 4, and Saturdays 10 – 12.

Her first Baby Boomer mystery Retirement Can Be Murder came out in 2009 and has been suggested for a television series by several national critics. The second in the series Moving Can Be Murder came out last spring, and she is currently working on the third Marriage Can Be Murder. Bring your questions. This specially requested author and Sisters in Crime member might reveal some of her strategies and techniques for keeping readers engaged as they follow the trail of a murderer. Her books will be available for sale and signing.

Vast flocks of winter robins, several species of hawks and owls, and the occasional appearance of winter vagrants make for plentiful birding opportunities on the Cape in the winter. Join Ian Ives, Director of Mass Audubon’s Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary for a glimpse into the winter birds of Cape Cod, and learn about the many amazing survival adaptations that they employ to stay warm and find food.

Dennis Public Library - New local author Chip Bishop

New author and former West Dennis resident Chip Bishop meets with our audience. His book The Lion and the Journalist: The Unlikely Friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and Joseph Bucklin Bishop explores the relationship between Theodore Roosevelt and Chip’s great granduncle Joseph Bucklin Bishop, who was a newspaper editor and the president’s authorized biographer. Chip says his goal “was to draw a rich portrait of the exceptional lives of two great men…The book emerges as a remarkable tale of power, politics and presidential courage.”

Pulitzer Prize winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin says, “Chip Bishop identifies one of the central keys to T.R.’s success, his unparalleled ability to forge warm relationships with the press, even then they challenged and criticized him."

Books will be available for sale and signing.

The library's survival is dependent on two important factors, our volunteers and our friends. Without either, we would not be able to provide the service or materials the community wants and needs.

The saying goes, "you can never have to many friends." In in our case, it's the truth! Consider joining the West Dennis Library Friends. Dennis Memorial Library: Freeze Your "Holds"

CLAMS has introduced a new feature that allows you to "freeze" your holds (books you have requested) if you expect to be away when they arrive at the library. By freezing the hold you remain at the same position on the list of all patrons waiting for that item. That is, you don't lose your place in the queue because you were't able to pick the item up when it arrived.

When you return, "unfreeze" your holds and you'll still be at the same position you were when you froze them.

To freeze your holds:
1. Go to http://www.clamsnet.org/
2. Click on "View My Account"
3. Follow directions on Login page then click "submit"
4. When your record comes up, click on "View Outstanding Holds"
5. Click on "Freeze" box (far right) next to the item you wish to freeze AND THEN click on "Update List"
6. To "unfreeze" items follow steps 1--4 and then unclick "Freeze" AND "Update List" box

Local Author Maura Rooney Hitzenbuhler

This year the author released her well-received novel The Lane: A Young Woman’s Tale in the Heart of Dublin.

The story is set in Ireland during the 1950s. A young woman Kate finds herself pregnant in a society where women occupied secondary status, a position cemented by the ever-present and important Catholic church. Kate is left to do the best she can for herself and her child.

Book critic Michael Lee says, “You might have read certain versions of this story, but you haven’t read her version. Happily, it’s worth it.” As the rich tale unfolds, the reader encounters many surprises. Come with questions ready for the author. Ms. Hitzenbuhler will have books available for sale and signing.

Dennis Public Library - Photographer Stanlee Wetzel

Stanlee Wetzel is having a one-person Photographic Show at the Dennis Public Library to run for the month of November 2011.

The show is called: “Eclectic Photographic Images” by Stanlee Wetzel.

Stanlee is a juried member of the Fine Art Photography division of the Cape Cod Art Association and a juried-in member of the Russell Gallery at the Plymouth Center for the Arts. Her works have received awards in numerous competitions, and she has been recognized for her one-woman photography shows in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Many of her pictures hang in homes along the Eastern seacoast and overseas.

As a freelance photographer her images have been published in annual reports, newspapers, brochures and business advertising. She approaches subject matter from a unique point-of-view and focuses on how the rendering of images creates a distinctive perspective.

The West Dennis Library is pleased to be partnering with The Family Pantry in Harwich for a Food Drive from 11/1 - 11/16. The food collected goes to a food bank which serves the residents of Dennis.

Bring in canned and boxed goods to the library, and we will waive the fines on your account. Don't have any fines? Bring in food anyway to help stock up the shelves for the coming winter season.

Let's work together, as a community, to help our neighbors feeling the pinch of the current economic times. Join with the library on this food drive!
