Small Scented Cushions Knitting Workshop and Hand Knitting Pattern.

Saturdays 'Knitting with Texture' workshop held at Castaway Yarns, near York was a great success!

All the girls who attended the workshop were experienced knitters apart from one very talented knitter, who picked up the knitting needles for the first time at the 'How to Knit' workshop earlier this month and impressed us all with her quick ability to learn how to knit the small 'Garden Plot' cushion, which requires quite intermediate skills!

During the workshop Meg called in to the shop to show us all the beautiful blanket she'd knitted in 'Garden Plot' especially for her pooch, after attending the same workshop held at

Castaway Yarns last November!

The Cake was as scrumptious as ever. With extra 'Big Thanks' to Jean who provided us all with the most beautiful home made Walnut cake. Apologies to Clare's family!

(We ate all the cake!!)

And of course 'Big Thanks' to Clare for providing such a lovely venue and to all the girls that attended.

It was such a fun filled, creative and fabulous afternoon.

Each cushion measures just 6" x 6" and takes very little yarn.

Using a small quantity of polyester toy filling and a few drops of your favourite perfume on the filling, they make wonderful gifts.

I've placed mine on my desk in the studio.

They also make a drawer smell beautiful, although it seems a shame to hide them away!

Valentine Heart Knitting Pattern and 'How to Knit' Workshop

Yesterdays 'How to Knit' workshop held at Castaway Yarns a fabulous little yarn store, in the beautiful village of Haxby, on the outskirts of York, was a great success.

During the afternoon everyone learnt how to cast on, knit, increase stitches, hold stitches, decrease and cast off.

We used the thumb method to cast on 20 stitches and then knit a few rows of garter stitch as a practice run and an introduction to knitting a tension swatch.

Once everyone gained confidence casting on and knitting their first stitches,

we moved on very quickly to understanding and knitting from a pattern.

Using my Baby Heart pattern as an introduction, everyone learnt all the

techniques required to increase, hold stitches, decrease and cast off.

As always a BIG thank you to Clare at Castaway Yarns for providing such a lovely venue and to Jean for the wonderful cakes she bakes especially for the workshops. (Truly scrumptious)

Valentine Hearts Knitting Pattern and 'How to Knit' Workshop at Castaway Yarns.York

Next Saturday I'll be at Castaway Yarns in Haxby, near York, teaching a 'How to Knit' workshop for those who've never picked up the knitting needles or those who've just forgotten!

We'll be knitting these fabulous hearts in preparation for Valentines day.

The pattern is a great introduction into how to, cast on, knit, increase, hold stitches, decrease and cast off. The Hearts are very quick to knit and require only a tiny quantity of yarn.

I spray my favourite perfume onto the interior polyester toy filling of each heart, sew a pretty ribbon to the top and hang from the door handle or coat peg.

They also make wonderful scented sachets for drawers and storage, little gifts to give to a loved one, or great pincushions if your not too happy with the love in your life!!

If you've never knit in your life before and would like to take a few small steps to learn a wonderful craft

Remember the ‘Glow’ you felt when you knit your first stitch!

This weekend has been such a pleasure and spent in the company of some very talented and creative knitters.

The two separate private workshops, held over the weekend included a mix of knitting abilities ranging from ‘never picked up the needles before’ to expert knitters with a wealth of experience and we just about covered everything!

Casting on, how to knit, how to increase, ribbing, cables and texture, fair isle, intarsia and top down knitting.

Lunch was superb as always, a BIG thank you to Debbie!

Yesterday I forgot to bring out the cup cakes!!....

(Sorry girls…they’re still in the cupboard and I might just have to eat them…..

I promise to provide…… extra cake next month!)

Everyone learnt to knit and cake was consumed!!

to Rhona for baking the beautiful cake, supplying us all with endless cups of tea and assisting me throughout the workshop.

I used my Baby Hearts International Free Knitting Pattern at the workshop

as an introduction to a first attempt at knitting.

This is a perfect pattern for those who have never knit before and is written in seven languages.

The techniques included in the pattern are: Cast on, knit stitches (Garter stitch), increasing, splitting work, rejoining yarn, decreasing and casting off.

The pattern is written for a standard DK yarn, but, I got a bit carried away and experimented with an eyelash yarn, which created a fantastic fluffy heart. The heart in eyelash yarn requires no polyester toy filling (unlike the DK heart) Just a squirt of your favourite perfume!

I'd only recommend using eyelash yarn for the pattern if you've knit before.

For your first attempt at knitting you will need a standard D.K. yarn.

3.25mm Knitting Needles and a small amount of polyester toy filling.

Each heart measures just 4" x 4" finished and takes just a tiny amount of yarn.

After the Christmas holidays and New Year festivities, it's now time to put all those new Years resolutions into place....(I've already broken two!!).....

So it's knitting needles to the fore and a month of really exciting knitting workshops.

Last week I was busy preparing the patterns and fair isle charts for the Shabby Chic Scented Hearts knitting workshop. The first workshop of the year, held yesterday at Castaway Yarns in Haxby near York.

Castaway Yarns is a beautiful Little Yarn Store, full of fabulous yarns, with a really friendly and warm atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit if you live in the York area or are just passing through.

We had a wonderful, fun filled afternoon.

'BIG' thanks to Claire and Jean for the tea and the truly scrumptious cake (Cake made by Jean) and to all the beautiful girls who attended the workshop.

Within the first hour everyone was knitting in colour and following the fair isle charts.

At the end of the afternoon we had some beautiful hearts in progress.

A 'New Year' of 'How to Knit' workshops will commence on

Saturday 7th January 2012 at

'Castaway Yarns' in Haxby, near York.

The first workshop is designed for those who can already knit and would like to learn

'How to knit' in colour, fair isle and intarsia.

Following the success of our first 'How to Knit' workshop at Castaway Yarns in Haxby last October, we've decided to begin a new course for those who've never knit before,

commencing on Saturday the 28th January at Castaway Yarns in Haxby.

If you live in the York area and would like to learn 'How to Knit' come and join the fun!!

This workshop is especially designed for those who've never picked up a pair of knitting needles before, but, perhaps, have made a New Years resolution to learn 'How to Knit',

be creative, have some fun and cake!!

(We don't count calories, just stitches)

All mistakes are regarded as creative knitting!!

Elaine Park at 'Up Country.' A fabulous LYS in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire

Aran Tweed. Cable Cowl, Scarf, Neck Warmer. Hand Knitting Pattern and Workshop

Yesterdays cable cowl knitting workshop.

A brilliant day of knitting, laughter and lunch.

We began by casting on to a circular knitting needle, loosing count of the number of stitches so many times between the laughter, chat and concentration.

I was the only one to get the final stitch count wrong on my needle..... (3 times!!!)

By the end of the day everyone had learnt how to knit and cable on to a circular knitting needle and were well on their way to knitting their finished cowls, ready for the cold winter days to come!

I've really enjoyed designing and knitting this pattern.

Knit in Aran Tweed yarn, colour Oatmeal on 5mm knitting needles.

It's a very quick and easy pattern to knit.

Fair Isle Ski Hat. Hand Knitting Pattern.

Basic two-colour Fair Isle knitting requires no new techniques beyond the basic knit stitch. (The purl stitch is not used.) At each knit stitch, there are two available “active” colours of yarn; one is drawn through to make the knit stitch, and the other is simply held behind the piece, carried as a loose strand of yarn behind the just-made stitch.
This fabulous hand knitting pattern is written to include 2 methods of knitting. The first method is the traditional Fair Isle method (Knit in the round on 4 double pointed knitting needles. Seamless) The second method is worked flat and knit using 2 needles, with a back seam.
The pattern is a lot easier than it looks.
The design began as part of a research project, but, whilst I was busy knitting my DH decided he quite liked this little number and after I’d finished the sample, I too decided I quite liked this little number…..and added a Pom Pom…..;-)
The knitting pattern takes very little yarn. I’ve stated 50grams of each of the 3 colours used in the pattern instructions, but, I’m quite sure it will only need 25grams of each colour. (Better to be safe than sorry)
The pattern is written with charts for the 4 fair isle stripes of colour.
Now we just need the Ski slopes:)

Bonfire Night and Knitting Workshops

This weekend was fabulous fun, spent hosting two fantastic private knitting workshops.

Full of laughter and creativity.

We girls know how to knit!!

Endless cups of tea and coffee, lunch and buns. Saturdays fair isle knitting workshop was held at home, around the kitchen table. Sundays knitting workshop, a combination of 'How to knit' and progression was held at a friends house, around her kitchen table. Somehow the kitchen table seems the perfect spot to sit and knit. How rare it is these days to gather and socialise in the comfort of our own homes, sharing tales of love and life, whilst also being creative.

When I returned home on Sunday evening, my son arrived with a surprise box of fireworks and treated me and my husband to an impromptu firework display.

What a wonderful weekend!!

Aran Cushion. Garden Plot. Hand Knitting Pattern.

A perfect hand knitting pattern for those new to knitting, those who want an ‘On trend’ pillow/cushion and those of us that like a quick knit and fast result.
A variation of Garden Plot, using garter stitch and knit on big needles.

Using 2 strands of Aran to create a chunky yarn the pillow cover takes just 400 grams of yarn.

The pillow/cushion could also be knit using big wool on large needles,

providing the tension works to

7 sts and 12 rows to 4". 10cm.

October 'How to Knit' Workshop. Castaway Yarns. First Stitches.

A big thanks to Clare at Castaway Yarns for hosting a fabulous 'How to knit' workshop yesterday and allowing me to teach six fabulous girls 'How to knit' in her lovely Little Yarn Store in Haxby, on the outskirts of York.

None of the girls who attended the workshop had ever picked up a pair of knitting needles prior to lunchtime yesterday and by late afternoon everyone had learnt how to read a ball band, how to cast on, how to knit, how to purl, how to increase, how to decrease, how to cast off, how to knit a tension square. Everyone left the workshop with their first knitting pattern , knitting needles and ball of yarn. Clare provided us all with beautiful cakes, made by a friend of hers who is starting her own cake making business, and endless supplies of tea and coffee. The cakes were scrumptious.

Thank you Claire, it was a lovely day!

This has to be the easiest and quickest pattern to knit.

It’s a perfect pattern for those new to knitting, those who want an ‘On trend’ pillow and those of us that like a quick knit and fast result.

You will also need a 16” zip, 1 button and an 18” pillow/cushion pad.

Baby Socks, Booties, Hand knitting Pattern and Knitting Workshop

Another fabulous day.

A private knitting workshop, master class and lunch.

These workshops are so much fun and such a great opportunity for friends to catch up and be creative.

We knitted, we laughed, we chatted and learnt how to knit in the round.

Ideas were flowing.

Everyone managed to knit one Baby Sock over the course of the day, odd socks all round, with lots of creative knitting and laughter.

The pattern is written for garter stitch in the round, a very simple pattern to knit (if you remember to knit one round and purl the next!!)

After lunch the heels were turned :)

Late afternoon the socks were finished

Just one more to knit.

Knitting a Snood. Knitting Workshop, Master Class, Hand Knitting Pattern.

Held a fabulous private, knitting workshop and master class at a friends house today.

The idea, to knit a vintage snood keeping the knitted design simple and quick to knit.

It's been such a gloriously, hot and very sunny day. So we sat in the beautiful, cool interior.

Scaling the size of the snood down to a third of the finished size, we covered, how to rib in the round on four double pointed knitting needles and how to knit mesh stitch in the round, thus creating the 'hair net' effect for the snood.

The finished knitting created the sweetest little berets,

which can be worn as hair accessories.
