I have a personal affinity to the cause. In 2002 my father was diagnosed with a PCA, a visual variant of Alzheimer's disease. It caused him to go blind before his memory began to dissipate.

Micro-mini misnomers.
Just because Gwenyth rocked a black sequined Proenza Schouler tee as a dress in July's Bazaar doesn't make it OK to wear the look literally. Mini's are fabulous, but mini's that show cleavage are a definite don't no matter what the season.

Glads gone bad.
Enough already. Next time you set foot on any city street, pan down. Chances are the scene looks fresh out of the movie Troy. Yes, Gladiator sandals in every color, texture, and height have taken over the world. But in reality, only a brave few have conquered this look with style and grace. Opt for the ankle-tall version over the up-to-the-knee kind. Love may be a battlefield but your shoes shouldn't look like you fight in one.

Cleavage outpourings.
The men in my life may disagree, but when the temperature rises that's no excuse for overexposure. Tank tops, summer dresses and mini skirts are always on the warm weather menu, but that doesn't mean your bod has to be a feast for the eyes. You can still rock your summer sultriness but make sure you dress in less with class.

The tragically bronzed.
Yes, self-tanners are a godsend. But there is a point when your skin can go from looking beautifully bronzed to something resembling brick orange. Go easy on the auto-bronzers (like, if you think your not getting dark enough, chances are you've reached your faux glow threshhold). Whether it be from the shores of St. Tropez or straight from the bottle, less is more--unless we're talking about SPF 30.

Maxi, yes. Muu-muu, no.
Summer maxi dresses have maximum appeal. But don't confuse the trend by opting for an oversized, unflattering muu-muu. Keep the floor-grazing silhouettes form-fitting and feminine--not frumpy.

The (senseless) summer scarf.
At the risk of being, well, brutally honest, it is my opinion that scarves in the summertime (particularly in places like New York City where the average daily temp is upwards of 85 degrees not including humidity) is just plain silly. I completely get the appeal, but why would anyone want to blanket their necklines in sweltering heat? Call me traditional, but as a self-proclaimed fashionista, there is a point where I draw the line between style and just plain senseless.

Ahhhh...summer. A time to be whimsical about fashion. There's simply no other season where you'll find more fashion risks taken. Some fab, some not so fab. The Handbag Spy: How to Spot a Fake Kooba

After several weeks of serious handbag obsessing, I have come to discover Kooba is my current designer fave. I have determined this for several reasons: The leather is sumptuous yet shape holding, the styles are hip yet enduring, the craftsmanship is artful yet wearable, and the prices— not obscene if you know where to look on line. Last but not least there’s that undeniable glorious scent of high-grade Kooba calf skin leather. Yum. Like Rhianna, Sienna Miller, and Cameron Diaz, I am a Kooba girl converted.

In the spirit not enslaving myself to high fashion, or high fashion price tags for that matter, I have come across various e-commerce channels in which to purchase my new Kooba, offering a varying degree of prices. Picking up a new Kooba directly from their site can set you back a cool $300 (for a simple clutch) all the way up to $1000 (for the larger more ornate styles). So how is it that some independent e-tailers can offer this bag at 50 to 75% below retail? Plain and simple: they are pawning off fakes. And with all due respect, they’re paid great attention to detail. How to avoid the faux handbag trap but still save a few hundred? The chic and savvy fashionista's best defense is research. But have no fear dear Kooba lover, with the help of a very clued-up expert* we’ve done the legwork for you:

The Downlow:

The Brown String - Initially, you could spot a fake Kooba by looking for anything other than the "brown string" attached to the Kooba tag. Now, most of the fakes have the brown string also. BUT 99.9% of the brown Kooba tags that have anything other than a brown string attached are fake.

The Hangtags – Genuine Kooba tags are two-sided & folded and the string is connected in the corner. Most 2007 tags are two sided & folded and the string is connected in the middle. Late 2007/2008 bags have a single sided tag again with the string in the middle. Authentic Koobas from previous seasons had the single sided tag (so you may find an authentic pre-2006 Kooba with the non-folded tag). Counterfeiters use both types of tags so be careful. NOTE: Some sellers will steal a real (folded) tag and put it on bags for photos so ask to a see a close up of the inside of a folded tag to make sure the info matches the bag you are purchasing.

The Zipper Pull - The metal zipper pull on authentic Koobas is thicker at the end. On some of the bad fakes, it is the same depth from top to bottom. But most of the fakes now have zipper pulls that are thicker at the bottom like authentic Koobas so this doesn't mean much anymore. If you have one that isn't, it’s a pretty old, bad fake. Also, some of the really bad fakes have Kooba written on both sides of the interior zipper pull. The real Koobas only have it on one side. Note that some older style authentic Koobas had leather zipper pulls.

The Leather - Most Kooba leather will have variations in the texture (some sections smooth, some bumpy, some crinkled). Leather that is evenly pebbled all including the straps is one of the easiest tell-tale signs of a knock-off. Authentic Kooba leather is almost always textured in some way. Many pebble-grain Koobas on Ebay are fake so be careful. Educate yourself on the Kooba website. Make sure the style you are purchasing was/was not made in pebbled leather before purchasing it. Kooba bags may have sections of a bumpy texture (sometimes large bumps) but there will also be sections of smooth leather or crinkled leather. Some of the Fall 2006 bags have huge bumps all over (i.e. teak leather) but nothing like standard handbag pebbling. Even the color may vary slightly in different sections. Fake Kooba leather looks like this:

Some of the fakes look like "droopy skin". I've noticed that many people who have purchased fakes on Ebay will comment on how incredibly SOFT the leather is. Well, Kooba leather is wonderful, nice & sturdy and soft as in Italian leather/lambskin soft but it is not squishy & droopy. Again, some of them are made of real leather, just a much lesser quality than what Kooba would use. Besides the pebble grain leather used in the fakes, they also use a non-pebbled "distressed" type. It wrinkles up (in a bad way) more than authentic Kooba leather. So, if you look at yours and think "mine isn't pebbled" that doesn't mean it isn't fake. Again, does it look like $600 leather? Real Kooba leather is undeniably stunning.

The Plastic Covering - Real Kooba handbags may have the plastic covering that protects the Kooba plate from scratching and white paper protecting tassles, etc., but plastic covering on the handles is a knock-off tip-off. (This is usually a dead giveaway of a counterfeit handbag in ANY brand).

The Dust Bag - Most all of the fakes these days have dust bags, hangtags and yes, even authenticity cards. One thing to look for on most genuine new Kooba dustbags is that the drawstring ends have glue on the tips to keep them from fraying. Find the knot in the string on each side and feel to see if the ends of the string feel hard. You can't see the glue but you can definitely feel it. Almost all of the fakes are missing this little detail on the dustbag. 2007 dustbags have changed dramatically. They are now dark brown twill (instead of white felt) and have dark brown drawstrings that are heavily waxed. They have white Kooba lettering.

The Lining - Authentic Kooba handbags have linings in solid lavender, brown and olive. The lining is not real suede, but a suede-like material that is actually much softer. 2007 bags have a new dark brown twill interior and dustbag. Pre-2005 Koobas had a canvas type interior with Kooba written throughout. There was also a striped pattern in very early years along with a couple of floral patterns. Older bags also had cloth interior labels instead of metal plates and Kooba was embossed on the outside instead of engraved on the metal plate.

The Styles: Let’s take the most popular selling Kooba, the Sienna: Real Siennas are an off-white, ivory color. Siennas that appear bright white and evenly pebbled are indeed, fake. Real Siennas, have the braided drawstrings that gather evenly. Many of the fakes have uneven gathering or do not gather at all. Also, the sides of the leather will fold in smoothly. Example, the Kooba Sienna in Ivory:

The bag should be off-white, not pure white. Check out the way the sides fold in, the way the sides fold in, and last but not least, the perfect knots of the dogleash.

The Quality – This may seem like a no-brainer but seriously, does your handbag look and feel like a $500-$1000 accessory? You should instinctively know if something seems a bit...off. Kooba handbags are incredibly well-made. Upon sight you will know an authentic Kooba if you are familiar with them. If you aren’t--smell one. Even Koobas that are several years old retain an undeniable, delicious leather scent.

The Styles Most Likely to be Knocked Off - The Dylan, Carly, Charlie & Avery. Older bags include The Sienna, Ginger, Marcelle, Lucy, Ada, Carla, Mia, Scarlett, Brynne, Paige & Braeden

The Homework – Do it. Contact Kooba to find an authorized retailer nearest to you. Go in person, examine the bags, get to know the product. The do your online shopping armed with knowledge so you don’t get Koobamboozled. These bags are fabulous, and they are worth spending a few extra dollars on to insure you are getting the real deal.

To Ebay? Or not to Ebay?

Ebay With Caution. Many Kooba buyers have never seen the real thing in person before they buy on line (A.K.A me, shhhh). It’s easy to get caught up gazing through style.com’s look of the day, or paging through the iconic US Weekly. The next step is usually Ebay where the budget Fashionista can get the look for less (but not necessarily the real thing) The unlucky winner oftentimes receives a fake and never knows know the wiser. So here are some Ebay hints:

Know your product: Anytime you see a brand new, current season bag that is drastically reduced in price you can be almost certain it is fake. But you can find some great deals on authentic Koobas from previous seasons. I strongly suggest knowing exactly what an authentic Kooba is supposed to look like.

Tricky Phrases: Pay attention to phrases like Guaranteed 100% authentic leather Kooba. They are guaranteeing the leather not the brand.
Guarantee: By all means make sure the seller has a rock-solid, money-back return policy. If you are still uncertain after receiving your new bag, take it to an authorized Kooba dealer and ask them. Return it to the seller if you’ve been bamboozled.

Feedback: Make sure your seller has an impeccable feedback rating (at least 98%). The more transactions your seller has completed, the better. Beware of sellers who use “private” listings or have their feedback listed as “private.” There is a reason they are not being transparent. Don’t take the chance. It bears repeating: Only buy from sellers who offer a 100% money-back guarantee. And take time to read all of their feedback. Obviously anyone saying "fake handbag," no matter how many positive reviews surround this is cause for alarm. More subtle hints include: "Thanks for the refund, " etc.

PayPal: Use PayPal as your method of payment. They are set up to protect the buyer. Just read the fine print, make sure your delivery address as well as email address is “confirmed” and you are buying from a USA-based seller.
Ask Questions: Ask the seller where they purchased their bag originally. If they seem vague in their answer "a boutique in NYC," ask "which one?" Then find out if this is an authorized retailer (contact Kooba). Oftentimes sellers who seem annoyed by questions of authenticity are usually selling the knock-offs. If they say they purchase them from a "supplier"- forget it.

Too Much of a Good Thing: Beware of a seller with a large volume of Kooba’s for sale. Most sellers selling authentic merchandise will only have a limited number of styles and available. You may have an honest seller with 10 Koobas for sale and they will probably all be in different colors and/or styles. If you see a seller with more than 5 of any one color beware.

One Day Auctions: Steer clear of. This means the seller is trying not to be discovered by Ebay VERO team.

The Receipt: Unfortunately some sellers have stooped so low they’ve gon to the trouble of manufacturing a fake receipt to authenticate the fake Kooba. A receipt does not necessarily guarantee a handbag is authentic.

Common Sense: Anytime you see a brand new, current season bag that is drastically reduced in price you can be almost certain it’s a replica. However, you can find some great deals on authentic Koobas from previous seasons.

The High Price of Buying Fake Handbags

"What's the harm?" asks a fellow counterfeit-sporting fashionista who prefers to remain nameless. "If these designers were more realistic with their pricing, no one would buy knockoff designer bags in the first place."

Maybe so. But what my faux-loving-friend fails to realize is although touting her fugazzi Fendi may save her some cash and impress her friends, the negative impact of buying cheap reaches far beyond the loss in profit to the designers. The consumer knock off obsession has serious consequences that are far less than ethical.

There are a multitude of reasons to NOT buy knockoffs, beginning with the fact that we, as taxpayers, carry the burden for this tax-free business. According to government sources, 200 billion is approximately the amount that counterfeiters do not pay - this means that honest taxpayers make up the difference.

Consider this, three-quarters of counterfeit items seized last year came from factories in China, 'staffed' by children. Since their fingers are small, they are better at the intricate stitching that makes fake designer items look so convincing paid as little as $10 a week and working up to 18 hours a day. Children have also reportedly been locked up in Far East factories - for days on end, without food or water - to hit deadlines for getting the latest fashions to London and New York.

The fake goods industry is not the victimless crime most imagine it to be. The sale of under-the-counter goods may appear to be a harmless activity, but the FBI claims that brutal organized crime syndicates now monopolize the trade.

The financial toll our local community takes is also an eye opener. One New York city ad links counterfeit goods to a decline in city services, reading, “The sale of counterfeit goods costs New Yorkers $1 billion in lost tax dollars each year — less money to improve schools, staff hospitals and make our streets safer.”

In other words, when one buys, sells, or hosts the sale of counterfeit goods, they are banking on a near sighted benefit with disregard to the long term cost to others--which ultimately leads to violence, criminal activity and financial loss.
Oh and did I mention, it is illegal?

Look, I'm not saying you should go for broke on a $5000 Birkin just to bask in the glory of telling your friends it's real (unless of course you are Victoria Beckham). But what I am saying is, if you can't afford the real thing, buying a fake just to look the part is not only kinda tacky, it's also goes against the greater good.

Nabbing a knock off handbag used to be an adventure. One of those dirty little secrets you'd giggle over with your girlfriends. It was kitsch. It was novel. Heck, $40 bucks for a $4,000 Fendi? It was just plain silly girlstuff.

But things have changed. A new societal trend has emerged. Fake is the new real. If you need any convincing just check out Sunset Beach in the Hamptons on a Sunday afternoon. And when I say fake, I'm not just talking the Louis Vuitton pouchette variety.

Like cockroaches post extermination, the recent crack down on the sale of laughable fakes has caused a second generation of UBER replicas to hit the scene and they're bigger, better, and more fierce than ever. Who can deny the appeal? The nouveau faux is everything you'd expect from the real deal without the hefty price tag. It's made of the same sultry calfskin, polished satin hardware, and logos exact to the tiniest detail. Still not convinced? Well there's even a faux authenticity card and department store price tag attached to quell all of your knock-off suspicions.

What I'm referring to are the grade A's. The high-end luxury knock-offs that look so real, even the most discerning fashionista (aka DesignerLaundry's style editor) was caught drooling over a Gucci fugazi. And business is booming. These top shelf fakes in every color, shape and style of the runway are being churned out quicker than you can say Lou-bou-tin.

But the good (fake) stuff comes with a price. The top-grade pebbled calfskin, heavy magnetic fasteners and mirror image logos will set you back a cool $200-$300. But beyond the not-so-cheap cost us regular folk will pay for a good fake, there exists a more disturbing price to pay that exists far beyond monetary exchange.

The Birkin phenom. I just don't get it.

In the spirit of handbag hunting, my research would not be conclusive without a nod to Hermès. Although the conservative lines of the Birkin don't thrill me (alas neither does the $40,000 price tag) hats off to Hermès for pricing this thing so outlandishly, it's redefined handbag history. This bag is a prime example of luxury good pricing having zero to do with form, function, or style. Once the cost of a fashion accessory rivals the down payment on a condo you gotta wonder: Is it really worth it?

The Crocodile Hermes Birkin. A steal at $30,000.

Thanks to Sex and the City, this enigma first crossed over to the everywoman's wish list five years ago when Samantha tried throwing around Lucy Liu's name to get her name on the two-year waiting list. Carrie obviously pulled some strings at Vogue as she was last seen lingering in her fantasy closet toting the Vert Anis lizard version. Hm. Carrie must have upped her $4.50/word rate at Vogue.

She must have sold alot of books.

Needless to say the Birkin retains it's popularity amongst the celebrity set quite possibly for the very reason that it is so outlandishly priced. It has been said that Victoria Beckham owns over 100 Hermes bags. Well, I would not be surprised. But seriously, unless Hermès just throws them at her for the honor of having the Posh princess sport them on her arm, isn't it a bit excessive? I mean at 30K a pop, that's a cool 3 million. That could feed a small country.

Once upon a time I was handbag-daft.
Prior to my glam career at DesignerLaundry (a marketing role mind you) the illustrious world of high fashion and most specifically, the allure of the female handbag, completely eluded me.

“A handbag to a woman is what a watch is to a man,” declared Joselle, my business partner and far more fashionably superior confidante. “It’s a woman’s ultimate status symbol.”

“Really?” I quickly yanked off my wilted no-name micro suede demi by its weathered plastic strap. Although I never noticed it before, my bag was so very...blah.

Until now I never really thought about it but my bag certainly wasn’t going beyond: It was five years old, brown, fit my wallet, keys, cell phone, and matched basically everything I own because it was so, unremarkable. As I bolted out the door each morning my choice of bags was an afterthought, like underwear. An autopilot move that causes me to go for the same few pairs every time just because they're comfy and do the job. When the waistband begins to fray and the lace loses its luster, I notice only after its too late (sorry honey). I admit I’m fashion lazy. If I were a handbag, I’d be a hobo.

Outside a copious knockoff haven, Joselle and I alternated gasps from our over-wasabi’d Tuna rolls and observed the scene. For the first time ever I began to notice the everywoman and the consequent statement she was wearing over her shoulder. Once I started truly paying attention, I noticed hundreds of walking contradictions be-bopping around the D&G clad streets of Chinatown.

There was the infamous Fendi Spy wrapped around the arm of a mom in Crocs wearing a t-shirt declaring “Goofballs rule!” Another pack of tourists clad head to toe in L.L. Bean breezed by with matching glossy Gucci Hysterias--$2500 accessories sure to make a bold statement at the next block party. Then there was the small band of gum-smacking, flip-flopping, teens simultaneously gossiping while texting as $1500 Chloe Paddington’s drooped off their forearms. Come to think of it they were probably locals and their bags (unfairly) real.

Growing up in a fashionably-stunted Midwest college town where the perennial uniform was a bad combination of hiking gear and Greatful Dead tie-dies, let's just say being chic wasn't easy. My boldest fashion moment occurred at my Junior year holiday formal. I made my debut in a daring black sequined mini dress--A head turner snatched straight from the sale racks of JC Penny but I digress. Up til now, the hottest handbag I'd ever owned was a Coach satchel hand-me-down from a born and bred New Yorker friend that felt sorry for me.

“You’re too cute to be walking around Manhattan with that, that whatever it is you’re wearing."

She scoffed at my tried and true Anne Klein satchel purchased from DSW three years prior. I think I paid $36 for it (retail $105). When I set it down, it would flop any which way it landed like a sad, wilting flower.

Prior to this, I never considered handbags existing for anything more than carrying things. But for the quintessential New York woman who flits from work, to the gym, to shopping, to cocktails with the girls (all sans car) her purse becomes her portable world. Not just a carry-all, but a statement of her ultimate woman-ness.
